A majority of students in the country have been verbally or mentally abused by bullying. These students experience declining grades, heightened anxiety, and less desire to be around friends, thus leading to loneliness. These young students are in need of a safe place where they can make new friends.

Middle school students are very impressionable at their age. Ideas about themselves and others that they adopt during this crucial period of growth stay with them for a lifetime. Young men at this age have little guidance and are in desperate need of a positive role model.

York College Enactus received positive feedback from guidance counselors as well as teachers about the success of this conference. Also, surveys completed by the students suggested a positive trend in how the boys felt about themselves after the conference.

Outcome:

Buddy Bench that was placed on the playground of Lincoln Charter school in downtown York. The purpose is to eliminate loneliness and foster new friendships between the students. In addition, York College Enactus members trained students to become “Agents of Friendship.” These students were guided through various scenarios to develop their friendship skills. We have bought 6 new buddy benches to place at schools in the York community for next year.

York College Enactus and the local YMCA hosted a conference to provide these impressionable young men with role models they could look up to. The conference discussed how they should deal with peer pressure, and respect themselves and others.

Target Population: 7th grade boys in York County Years: 5

Young Men’s

In a technologically advancing world, there is almost no focus on financial literacy for young students. Younger students are more impressionable and need the building blocks of financial literacy to succeed in future Junior Achievement programs and future livelihoods.

Due to their formative age, middle school girls are prone to bullying, feelings of a negative body image, and low self-esteem.

Pre and Post surveys were given to all the girls that attended the conference in order to evaluate what effect the conference had on them. Results showed a definite increase in the way the girls viewed themselves.

Outcome:

York College Enactus partnered with the Junior Achievement program. Members went into kindergarten and first grade classrooms, and taught students about money, trade, and other basic financial concepts.

Action:

The elementary school students gained a better understanding of money and basic financial aspects of life.

York College Enactus and WellSpan Health hosted a conference held at York College, which was attended by seventh grade girls from surrounding York County schools. York College students have helped these girls find positive outlets for the struggles of growing up, providing tools to guide them in finding their self-identities.

There was an underdeveloped relationship between York College students and downtown York businesses.

a program called the York Business Academy with ten workshop-style sessions focused on building a business plan and developing skills for owning a business. Guest speakers from the community also attend various sessions, to pass on their knowledge and help guide the entrepreneurs.

Action: York College Enactus hosts clearer understanding of the discipline it takes to be an entrepreneur and the components of a business plan. At the end of the semester we have a graduation ceremony where our local state representative Kevin Schreiber presents all of the participants a certificate of completion.

Local entrepreneurs and those interested in starting their own business lack the knowledge and skills necessary to expand or create their own enterprises.

York Business Academy (YBA)

E-York lessons help local high school seniors increase their understanding of business and learn how to development a viable business pitch. Lessons included strategic planning, value, and marketing. The student’s business pitch’s were judged by local business owners.
