RECIPROCAL FRAME
Construction
This studio was focused on an investigation into reciprocal structures. The aim as a group was to understand the structure and its limits in order to create an innovative design. Investigation through physical testing was also key to this project to fully understand the extents of the material and the structure. The studio then aimed to use the structure to adapt an existing building and have a positive impact. The reciprocal structure creates a new organic form with an open roof. This is then clad in etfe pillows which allow the work space to be flooded with natural light. The drive was to create a more enjoyable and calming space for the users.

URBAN HOUSING To Live/To Work
The masterplan connects the Merchant City to Argyle Street through the design of a creative hub. The key concepts for the scheme design were to reintroduce a marketplace and to create privacy. The housing is located above the ground floor studio workspaces. On weekends, the workspaces open onto the street to form an interactive marketplace. The creation of private spaces for each of the housing units was achieved by angling the units to form private balconies. The choice of material for the external cladding is Corten steel this contrasts with the traditional red sandstone, while considering the surroundings.

A SENSE OF PLACE AND SPACE To Gather
To gather is a church project focused largely on the consideration of the place as well as the space inside the building. The site is situated in Culross, a small historic port town with abundant vernacular architecture. The use of vernacular features such as the dry stone wall are key to the design. The design aims to create a journey for users through a series of contrasting high and low, dark and light, and inside and outside spaces. The church is designed in the round encouraging people to connect and engage with Christianity and each other. The building is set back from the street which creates another place to gather.

A STUDY LIBRARY To Learn
The study library is situated in the grounds of the historic remains of St Andrews cathedral. The project takes the history of the site as the main drive for the design. The small cathedral buildings which are across the site created a template for a the library. The building location is adjacent to an arch way which is a big part of the design, creating a physical and metaphorical link between the old and new. The wall of the arch along with the main library building create another space which is used for the circulation. It is created out of glass to make a light connection. The study carrels provide views across the site towards the cathedral spire as well as views onto the arch wall. The walls in the library are thick to enable them to be inhabited just as castle walls are. The library has a variety of different spaces for people to read and study in their own fashion at leisure.

LIVE BUILD To Settle
To Settle is a love build project based at Wiston Lodge. The aim was to take a 1:10 scale model and work as a group to create a near accurate representation in 1:1 scale. Working through a variety of scales to test the construction process allowed us to create a labelling system that would allow for easy on site construction. The shelter is a form that can be climbed on, hidden in and looked at.

ART GALLERY To Engage
The art gallery is situated in the West End of Glasgow. The connection between the void, the circulation and the gallery spaces was a key element to the design process. To make the void area more usable landings were introduced at the top of each flight of stairs. These are to be used as secondary gallery spaces allowing a different method of displaying artwork. The pattern of the faรงade was driven by the context of the surrounding buildings, the buildings are much more heavily decorated in the lower area and are lightly decorated towards the top. The bottom of the building has a much greater use of large panels, many of which are steel, and as you move up the building smaller glass panels appear. Selected panels were pushed and pulled at angles in order to allow light to enter through a small window in the very upper part of the wall. Not only does this control light levels but it also allows work to still be displayed on the internal wall. Overall the design creates a protected light filled space with lot of flexibility for creating beautiful spaces for artwork.

ROOM WITH A VIEW
To Belong
The structure was designed as a building that forms part of a journey from Tinto Hill to Wiston Lodge. The view, which is captured by a large floor to ceiling window, is of a bridge over the stream. It is peaceful and calming with water and trees that shimmer when the sun shines. There are many trees on the site so the structure and circulation were designed to flow around. The journey is a continuous path and the building itself has a continuous route within. The building is a continuation of the journey, not an end point. The use of timber allows the structure to blend into its natural context while the mirror allows it to stand out. This will also allow people to notice the structure from a distance before they go and find it.
