Hello!

My name is Hannah Zhang and I am a second year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I am motivated, hardworking and am always eager to learn. I aim to design spaces that leave a lasting impression on people and I believe that architecture can be used to bring people together. In addition to my passion for architecture, I also enjoy dancing, painting and origami. Please enjoy my selected works!

Stratum Library 1B Architecture Studio April 2019 Location: Toronto, ON Supervised by: Chloe Town, Maya Przybylski

In this project, students were to design a library featuring a +program of their choice situated on one of five sites in Toronto. The +program that I chose was the community kitchen and the site is situated by the Wallace Avenue Pedestrian Bridge along the railway. Due to the small size of the site, I decided to build upwards with each floor featuring a different program, getting increasingly more private. The basement floor is where the kitchen is which is visually connected to the lobby on the ground floor through an atrium-like space and is visible to passerby through the curtain wall on the ground floor. The second floor is for leisure reading and lounging with many seating arrangements surrounding the bookshelves. The third floor is reserved for group study while the fourth floor is for indepentant study and reading. The uppermost floor is the reference section.

The facade was designed to shade the library and filter out sunlight as well as provide more privacy to specific parts of the library. The longer erby on the streets. The special cut of the fins also creates a more engaging facade to pedestrians walking by as the shape of the library app fins are made of steel with a thin veneer of wood to give the library a warmer and softer atmosphere.

site map The site is located at 2486 Dundas Street West in Toronto along the railway by the Wallace Avenue Pedestrian Bridge. The site has a total area of approximately 332 m². The surrounding area is primarily residential and commercial with subway and train stations nearby for accessibility. I chose the comminuty kitchen as a +program to serve as gathering space for the people living on both sides of the railway, almost as an extension of the pedestrian bridge.

The model of the library is made up of 3 removable components: the base of the building, an outer shell, and the facade pieces. The base of the model was hand cut from sheets of 1/16” thick museum board for a cleaner and simple appearance. The atriums as well as curtain wall on the first floor were added on later using 1/32” thick plexiglass acrylic sheets. The shell was cut from the same museum board and shows the placement of the windows under the fins which were hand cut from 3/32” sheets of basswood and attached using 1/16 x 1/8” basswood dowels.

Cinematic Promenade

2A Architecture Studio September 2019 Supervised by: Dereck Revington, David Correa

The journey one takes throughout architecture is comparable to the cinema, both taking the person through space and time but architecture has the ability to slow down and pause time. In this assignment, students had to select 3 movie clips that left an impression on them out of 25 carefully chosen clips. Using the scenes as inspiration, students then had to create an enclosed interior space that reflected the mood and atmosphere of the scene in an ascending or descending promenade. My 3 clips were from In the Mood for Love, the 1982 Blade Runner movie, and Last Year at Marienbad in ascending order. It is a journey about going through a secretive and alluring space to an uneasy and anxious climb to finally find peace in a dreamlike tranquility, only to realize that the peace is shortlived and that the cycle will repeat.

In The Mood for Love (2000) - Wong Kar-wai The clip from In the Mood for Love by Kar-Wai gives off an elusive aura with the shot compositions and camera work. Almost every shot is partially hidden by an object in the foreground, giving the viewer the impression that they are intruding onto something private. To emulate this atmosphere, I used a sheer red fabric to hide one’s view of the space in my model. I also used melted plexiglass with mirror spray paint to warp the reflections of people walking through the space to mimic how the dual reflections of the characters in the scene.

Blade Runner (1982) - Ridley Scott What intrigued me about this clip from the 1989 Blade Runner movie was the way the shot composition created this imposing and dangerous atmosphere. I decided to create a tall and dark space with a winding spiral staircase to emulate this feeling of running away or hiding from something. The ring of light at the top captures the same atmosphere as the spotlights in the scene but also illuminates the staircase while keeping the void in the center dark and hidden. I used a cone shape to create a suffocating feeling despite the size of the space as well as creating a forced perspective to give the illusion of an even bigger space.

Last Year at Marienbad (1961) - Alain Resnais The clip from Last Year at Marienbad exudes a tranquil, dream-like feeling with its soft lighting and slow pan but also this looming eerieness as the camera creeps slowly towards a dark space ahead. Due to the nature of cinema, the viewer passively experiences the scene and they are forced to move through the space by the camera. To recreate this idea in architecture, I decided to use a long, thin catwalk so that people have no choice but to go forwards. The soft lighting and fabric create this serene atmosphere but there is gradually less light as you go further in. On either side of the cat walk is a dark void to give the impression that you are floating through the space.

Revolve

1A Architecture Studio September 2018 Supervised by: Lola Sheppard, Genevieve Holinaty

In this project, students were tasked with taking an everyday item (e.g. an umbrella, a stapler, a corkscrew) and interpret or abstract the motion of the item. That was then used to produce a model using wooden dowels as well as an inhabitable installation or pavillion reflecting said motion. The tool that I chose was the cheese grater with a handle that would turn the cylindrical grater while a clamp would push the cheese down. I was interested in the relationship between the turning motion of the grater and the opposing turning motion of the smaller handle attached. These two opposing directions are displayed in the model. The staircase pavillion was inspired from the spiraling shape of the model and takes visitors from ground level to the top of a cliff site with a site-seeing point in the middle.

Both models were created using 1/16 x 1/8” basswood dowels. The staircase model also used 1/16” basswood to create the steps as well as seating at the ends of the site-seeing area. 1/16” chipboard was used to create the base.

Material Exploration

1A Architecture Studio September 2018 Supervised by: J. Cameron Parkin, Jaliya Fonseka

Students were to choose from 4 different methods of fabrication (e.g. folding, casting) and explore the characteristics of materials within each category. The final artifact was then used to create a partition for a potential exhibition. I chose casting and used candle wax and concrete to create my model. The wax was melted and then poured onto cold water. As it cooled, it was formed into irregular shapes with many folds and creases that were casted in concrete. The wax was then melted out to reveal the voids created by the shapes. The partition was made of plaster cloth to mimic the shape of the wax sculptures while remaining lightweight. The dowels create shelving to display work while creating an interesting relationship with the casted plastercloth.

1A Architecture Studio December 2018 Location: Cambridge, ON Supervised by: Richard Andrighetti, Fiona Lim Tung

After being given two occupants with different professions, students designed a house on one of three sites in Cambridge. The house must allow both occupants to work from home. The two occupants I received were a sculptor and a stamp collector and the site sits beside the Grand River. The east half of the house is primarily working space as well as some gallery space. The ramp circles around the sculptor’s studio and gallery while also providing a unique way to travel through the area. On the second floor is the stamp collector’s office and showroom which overlooks the first floor. The west half of the house cantilevers over the flood wall and contains the private living quarters which features a view of the river.
