Advertising is all around us in this culture. Hell, it creates our culture to a large degree. Around the Holidays though, advertisin’ goes into hyperdrive, constantly encouraging consumption. It’s so normalized, it’s easy not to question it. But be leery! Consumerism is a losing game for all involved but the small few who profit; from the land where the resources to make the products are extracted, to the laborers who make the products, to you, dear consumer, who trades your time for money to buy these products. Would you rather spend your time earning a wage to fuel this cycle, or using your talents and imagination to create gifts for the people you love? Some questions to ask before buying: Who gains what if I buy this? Who had to sacrifice what to make this? How (and with what) was this product made?
