In 2002 I bought my first digital camera. From that moment on photography became my great hobby. Before that I used to shoot on film and practically only when on holidays. Like nearly everyone who starts with a digital camera, I took pictures of just about everything. Landscapes, flowers, animals, people. I also began reading a lot about photography in magazines and on the web. My first interest was ‘dead trees’ soon to be followed by ‘old and rusty’. With landscapes and nature photography I soon realized that I had too little time to do that properly. After that my interest changed into abandoned and deserted places. But again, I have a full-time job and too little time to look for urbex-locations.
In 2011 I had joined a photoclub and there I came in touch with the ‘Fotobond’ (League of Dutch Amateur Photography). My mentor Janny Wierenga taught me how to look at subjects and how to choose my themes. She also told me about Stephen Shore and that I should look at his pictures. My new motto became: ‘Frame the world as it is’. Even today I take most pictures when I am on holiday, but next to the snapshots of the touristic scenes, I like to turn to the other side or have a look in the next street. The scenes I find there are more interesting to me.
