STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS DIVISION, MAE FAH LUANGUNIVERSITY 1st Floor, the President Building (AD Building) Tel: 053-916090, E-mail: warunee.kae@mfu.ac.th, Facebook Fan Page: MFU Exchange Programme and Scholarship

MFU Student Exchange Programme Have you ever wondered what it would be like to study at a university in another country? Are you looking forward to completing your degree so that you can take off and explore the world? Are you keen to experience a culture not your own? If you have ever asked these questions of yourself, an exchange programme may be just what you’re looking for!

What is the MFU Student Exchange Programme? The MFU student exchange programme is a programme that permits you to study for one semester or up to one year at a university overseas. There are many advantages to studying part of a degree overseas:    

Experience a different culture, Make new friends and see new places, Take courses not available at MFU, Enhance your future career prospects.

What does it mean to be an exchange student? The key part of being an exchange student is that you are still enrolled here at Mae Fah Luang University (MFU). You pay your normal MFU tuition fees and best of all, you do not pay tuition fees at the partner university! If you are eligible for a student loan/allowance here at MFU, you will continue to be eligible while on exchange. You are responsible for all of your own living expenses although scholarships may be available to help with costs. You will be graduating with a MFU degree, not with a degree from the partner university.

Experience the world! Why should I go on exchange? Immerse yourself in another country!! As a MFU student, you have the opportunity to study, travel and make lifelong friends around the world. Learn more about yourself, become more independent and give your MFU degree an international edge. Share your Thai culture abroad and, in return, experience the culture, lifestyle, and people of another country! Take advantage of these opportunities to earn credit toward your degree while gaining a cultural and personal perspective in your life. Participating on an exchange is a fun and life-changing way to broaden your horizons academically, geographically and culturally.

Where Do You Want To Go? The process of deciding which exchange destination is best for you, can often be the most exhilarating start to your international experience. With so many unique options available, it can also be a bit overwhelming. Mae Fah Luang University has many partner institutions all over the world, making it easy to find the best suitor. Follow these helpful tips when deciding on your exchange destination      

Which partner university will complement your MFU program of study? Which university has courses that are relevant to your studies at MFU? Do you have many electives left, allowing you more flexibility in your choices? What type of city setting do you prefer: big or small? Would you like to learn a new language? Does the partner university offer courses in a language you can study in?

Am I eligible to participate? Students are eligible to participate if:    

Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPAX) is 2.50 or above Completed at least two semesters of studies at the undergraduate level Demonstrated empathy and understanding of cultural differences Possess good communicative and interpersonal skills

Where can you go on exchange? We have over 30 partner universities around the world, so you’re bound to find a destination that’s right for you. Many of the programmes are open to most faculties, schools; and to undergraduate as well as postgraduate students. However, some of these programmes are limited to a particular university or a major, and some programmes may require knowledge of a language other than English. Note: International students studying for Mae Fah Luang University degree can apply to go as exchange students. International students are not permitted to attend a host institution in their home country. The selection criteria listed above also apply to international students. Please note that both local and international students may be required to take a TOEFL/IELTS/TOEIC test at their own expense as required by certain partner universities.

Exchange Requirements

I'm interested...What's next? Step 1: Discussion with Your Advisor  It would be beneficial to discuss your decision with a relevant academic staff member.  You must research your options prior to meeting your advisor and take bring the relevant documentation with you.  Your Advisor needs to approve your course selection. Credit Transfer The credits earned by during student exchange programme at the Host University shall be transferable to MFU. Courses taken in the Host University can be transferred into equivalent courses in MFU if there is minimal 75% learning outcome equivalency and the credit is equal or bigger than the course’s credit in MFU. Note: All processes are under Mae Fah Luang University’s Notification On Undergraduate-level Courses and Credit Transfer, 2012

Here are some suggested points for discussion:  Which host institution and why?  Are the courses you wish to take overseas available in the relevant semester/study period and offered in English?  Do you have the pre-requisites to take those courses?  Is your student exchange program equivalent to a full-time load at MFU?  Does your planned program enable you to satisfy the requirements of your MFU program within the normal time-period? Step 2: Completion of the application form Fill out the application form and don't forget:  2 recent passport size photos, with your name and Student ID number on the back  Include certified copies of your academic transcript and also any certificates that will support your application Step 3: Selection process Once you submit your application it will be processed as quickly as possible. If your application is successful, you will be called for an interview.

Once You've Been Approved Step 1: Interview  The interview is meant for the Student Exchange Programme and MFU’s Student Exchange Programme Scholarship.  Successful candidates will be contacted.  Application form from the partner institution will then be provided and the administrative processes will be explained.

Step 2: Completing the partner university's application form You will need to:  Complete the partner university's application quickly and accurately.  Return it to the International Affairs Division and the application will be couriered internationally.  There may be other attachments required, for example: Some universities require proof of finance at the application stage and results for IELTS/TEOFL/TOEIC (depending on the universities requirements).  You will send an original copy of your academic transcript and copy of passport for your application.  It takes approximately 8-12 weeks for partner universities to respond to applications. Step 3: Acceptance Letter from the partner institution  Once we receive notification from the partner institution, we will contact you immediately.  If the partner university contacts you directly, please advise and provide us with a copy of the acceptance letter. Note: Once accepted by the partner institution, concurrently, ensure that you:  book your flights;  confirm your accommodation;  organize insurance; and  apply for your visa. During your exchange programme  If you change your course selection, please email or send a formal letter to your Advisor for approval or contact International Affairs Division’s staff immediately.  If the partner university asks you to attend their Exchange Programme Fairs, kindly participate in promoting MFU. Returning home  Write a Student Report comprising commentary of pre-departure preparation, experiences while studying and suggestions to improve this programme.  You may be asked to participate in an info session to promote the student exchange program to other MFU students.

Financial advice! Costs In many cases you will be required to prove that you have sufficient funds before travelling. Travel & living expenses You are required to pay for your own travel and living expenses, which include your airfares, accommodation, meals, books, public transport, entertainment, etc. Student visas for some countries may allow you to work during your stay, but advice should be sought directly from the relevant embassy in Thailand. While working part-time during your exchange can be a rewarding experience, you should not plan to support yourself solely with income derived from employment while on exchange.

Financial Support from MFU! “Travel Expense” 1. ASEAN+3 total 10,000 THB 2. Others Countries total 20,000 THB Requirements to apply 1. Achieve a minimum GPAX of 2.75 2.
