Judge's Critqiue Cara Campbell, DVM First and foremost, I want to thank the membership that allowed me to judge the Futurity and Veterans Sweepstakes. I had a wonderful time. Judging is something that I find most enjoyable. The new venue was fabulous. I saw and wanted a wire at the age of 6. Also at the age of 6 I got involved with horses. My family was very active with breeding thoroughbreds and we (the kids) became very involved in performance horses. My progression was from western to hunters/jumpers to dressage and eventing. That background was perfect for establishing a foundation of the understanding of structure and movement. So when I got my first wire at the age of 22, I studied our standard. I found it easy to relate to, in fact, the line "he should stand like a cleverly made, short-backed hunter, covering a lot of ground", typifies our breed in my mind, as a breed, that above all should have good movement. Movement is a function of structure. So this what is important to me in a fox terrier. I thought the overall quality of the dogs that I judged was quite nice. There were some very showy dogs in the ring. I was a little disappointed that some dogs showed less interest in each other and their surroundings, and more in their handlers. I want to see "the wire", not the training. The grooming was excellent. The dogs were all in lovely condition. I think all my entries should be very proud of themselves and their dogs. Down to the nitty gritty in judging the young and old, I think we have good and bad things to consider. The good things are that as a breed, I saw good type in almost all of the dogs. They looked like good Wire Fox Terriers. The coats were all very nice, some a little better than others, but none that were not acceptable. I think we need improvement on ears. In the wires I judged, I saw more "not so good" ears, than good ears. Good ears, of proper size and thickness, probably don't even need our interference. But, several dogs ears had been "interfered" with. For the most part these ears were too small and too light. There were quite a few dogs with obviously short back skulls. So while I thought the heads were overall of a nice length, lean, and nice eye, the proportions were not as nice in some. I think as a whole, shoulders and front movement needed improvement. Several fronts severely converged, while a few were wide coming at me. Several dogs' shoulders were very nice, with a good layback, others were quite steep. Length of back was overall good, as were most of the tail sets. Rear movement as a whole was very good when viewed going away. Side movement was overall fair. I would have liked to have seen more reach and drive, "covering a lot of ground". I was pleased that for the most part, that there weren't many over angulated rears, something that seems to be trending right now. My Junior and Senior Futurity winners were both very lovely bitches, that should do well in the future for the breed. The Veteran Sweepstakes winner obviously showed that our breed ages well, as a good sound dog should. I think for us to improve as Wire Fox Terrier breeders, we have to consider the whole dog, not just a groomed picture. Movement is crucial. No dogs are perfect, but I feel it's important to be very critical and evaluate the dogs to our standard. We have a breed in which flaws can be easily covered with grooming. Use a mirror when grooming, and ask yourself "does my dog look good after he's stripped, or do I need to add hair here or there to make him look better". Remember these faults and attributes when breeding. The good parts should far outweigh the bad. So the faults should be harder to find, not because they are hidden, but because they are few and minor. Extremes, fads, and personal "likes" that aren't in the standard should be thrown out the window. And remember health! The general public likes wires as pets, they're great dogs! Breed for dogs that people can live with, and enjoy for many years. Again, I thank you, Cara Campbell, DVM

Judge's Critique Janice Wavra

I was extremely honored to be asked to judge Sweepstakes at the 67th Annual Central States Specialty Show. Throughout my years as an exhibitor, I’ve been the entertainment in sweeps when my wires decided not to behave. Therefore, I had given a great amount of time thinking about how I wanted to conduct and run my ring. I wanted each exhibitor to feel they had ample time to truly present, move, and show their wire. The wires presented overall met the WFT standard and showed true wire characteristics. The wires were well presented, conditioned, and for youngsters, they were well trained. In each class, the level of quality made my placement decisions difficult. The winners from each class represent the depth of our breed, which as a breeder, we know the importance of maintaining our breed standard. My selection for Best in Sweepstakes, Jadee-Delzar Fireproof, and my selection for Best of Opposite Sex, Random Rewired for Louline, were exceptional wires! They both had beautiful expression, were structurally sound, showed fluent movement, and were well conditioned. Again, I want to thank the membership for having the confidence in my abilities to judge the future of our breed! Warmest Regards,

Judge's Critique Mrs. Judi Hallbeck It was such a thrill to judge the show this year. I had so many good dogs with good movement. Over all I was impressed. I have to admit I had a problem with the winners dog. I loved the Bred By Dog and the Open Dog. Two different types really but both had good movement, nice heads and great wire coats. Going around they moved with ease. The last decision was the stop and set up with such a great profile showing himself off, the Open Dog. Gave the Bred By Dog Reserve. It really could go either way. Bitches were fun. Each puppy class winner, I would think to myself, maybe she could win. Such nice condition and expression. I myself found such quality in the bitches. Then the Open Class came in and I was wowed. The ginger girl was a stand out. I could hardly fault her and she was my Winners Bitch and Best of Winners. The Specials Bitch was a stand out also and also a Ginger. Guess it was the year of the gingers. I absolutely love her. I had seen her before but never went over her. Great shoulders,, eye, tail set and of course in excellent condition. She was my Breed Winner with the Winners dog going BOS. My select dog and bitch were lovely as well. Thank you to all who showed to me. It was something I will never forget.

Show Chair Report - May 11-12, 2012 By Altha Graham

The Wire Fox Terrier Club of the Central States celebrated its 67th year and the 8th year for its Futurity. We celebrated the launch of our new show site on May 10th and 11th. Held at the Eukanuba Hall at the Roberts Centre in Wilmington, Ohio, this year’s show was simply wonderful! We are thrilled about the move and the new activities were great fun! This move has truly made an already great show even better! The Eukanuba Hall is spectacular, with the same blue carpet, white ring gating and signage you see at the annual Eukanuba show in Orlando. Our ring had huge floral displays in each corner and a beautiful area for win photos. We had plenty of space for a 50’x50’ ring, a large grooming area ringside, electric drop boxes, a covered bathing area just outside the Hall, featuring three bath tubs with warm and cool water. There is a grassy exercise area just outside the Hall and close parking for the motorhomes. Perhaps the best feature for the Club workers was having no set up of the ring, no plastic on the floor and up the walls, and no quick tear down after the show. Because the Banquet took place in the next Ballroom, there was much less stress and less work involved in this year’s Show. Angela Reagan is our Roberts Centre contact person and she and her staff could not have been more organized or more helpful. For anything we needed, all we did was ask, and it was done immediately. The Holiday Inn Wilmington and the Roberts Centre must be commended for their friendly and courteous staff. I cannot thank everyone enough at this facility for making our weekend so great. Eukanuba representatives, Central States member Jason Taylor, along with Vicki Seiler, gave us a warm welcome at their booth where we could ask questions and pick up Eukanuba items. Jason even helped quickly provide indoor exercise pens when the rain began. Thank you for the warm welcome. We found the rooms at the Holiday Inn Wilmington to be spacious and luxurious, especially at the reasonable group rate! The only problem with the rooms was the availability on Friday night. I apologize for not taken into account the increase in members and friends attending this year’s show and did not block enough rooms for Friday night. This has already been taken care of for next year. There will be plenty of rooms at our block rate. Our exhibitors really take care of the facility and there were no complaints about dogs in the rooms or the cleanliness of the parking lot, yet we were frequently told that some of our exhibitors did not pick up after their dogs. This is no way for thoughtful, courteous people to behave! We want to assure that we can return to this lovely facility. In the parking lot just outside of the Eukanuba Hall we see the line of motorhomes. Karen Passow and Gloria Thomas held a Rally practice at their motorhome and we everyone had a great time learning about Rally. Next year I am sure that more people will bring their motorhomes to relax in the comfort of their own home away from home and visit at “Elefson Island.” Although we contracted for only one day’s use of the Eukanuba Hall, we were granted permission to use the Hall on Thursday afternoon for an informal Greet and Groom, planned by Education Chair, Cara Campbell. Cara thinks of everything and had a lovely display of drinks and snacks. Thank you, Cara. Many members used the time to help other exhibitors with their trimming, as well as to help pet owners who were just there to observe. At show time all of the dogs were in beautiful trim! Everyone learned a great deal from Friday morning’s Education Seminar featuring Dr. Kip Kampschmidt, a renowned authority on canine reproduction and neonatal care. There was something in Dr. Kampschmidt’s presentation for everyone! It was a great success! Thank you, Cara, for planning the program. Friday afternoon Cara changed hats and became our Futurity and Veteran Sweepstakes Judge. What a lovely event to honor Wire breeders and the future of our breed. Thanks to Elise Singer and Merrilee Henderson, our Futurity was well planned and went flawlessly, followed by the annual Champagne Toast. Friday evening at 7:00 we were treated to our first AKC Sanctioned Obedience/Rally Match, with Match Chairman, Elise Singer, and Match Secretary, Donna Johnson. Karen Passow on the microphone helped by explaining the classes. A first time for many of us, seeing the Wires participate in the Match was awe inspiring! The spectators smiled and thoroughly enjoyed watching 22 entries and their handlers go through their paces. No one left early, as everyone was very impressed! Next year we have AKC approval to hold an actual Obedience and Rally Competition and we have extended our contract with the Eukanuba Hall to accommodate the event. You won’t want to miss this one! Following the Match we all celebrated this new adventure at the Eukanuba Hall with a party in the grand hotel lobby featuring hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, snacks and a cash bar. We appreciate all of the work that Janice and Joe Wavra put into planning this special event. Fred and Dot Salzberg had nametags for everyone and Susan Nowicki put together fabulous gift bags. Eukanuba provided bright pink totes and Susan filled them with just the right goodies. Thank you all for a great party!! Early at Saturday’s Show everyone was all abuzz, with Catalog Sales and Merchandise doing a big business, while others enjoyed the pastries, fresh fruit and coffee bar, as the exhibitors busily prepared their dogs for the show. How could we have a Show without our Ring Steward, Marjorie Underwood? Marjorie did her usual excellent job. How fortunate we are to have this multiple Group Judge efficiently manage the ring procedure as directed by our judges!

After her eight years as Show Secretary I could absolutely not get along without Arden Shaw. It is a real pleasure to work with Arden and to have her there at the show. She and her assistant, Pat Holmes, are a dynamic duo and we appreciate the many hours Arden spent guiding and helping our Club.. I welcomed everyone to our show and asked them to remember Mr.Dan Musser, whose recent passing had touched us all. We had a moment of silence for Mr. Musser and. next year’s show will be dedicated to his memory Another first for our Club was having Rebecca Cross sing our National Anthem. I have never heard it sung more beautifully. Thank you, Rebecca! The first event on Saturday was the Puppy Sweepstakes. Puppy Sweepstakes Judge, Janice Wavra, is a well respected breeder and longtime member of Central States. Janice had a nice entry of puppies and managed her ring flawlessly, narrowing the field down to one Best in Sweeps winner. At noon we had our Annual Meeting, conducted by President, Connie Clark. Adding to the excitement at this year’s Show was the Four to Six Months Puppy Competition, held just before the Regular Classes on Saturday and judged by our Regular Class Judge, Judi Hallbeck. Who doesn’t love seeing puppies having fun in the ring? Judi Hallbeck, is a long-time member of Central States, a successful breeder of Wires, and a regular attendee at Central States. It was a thrill to see Judi back in the ring, this time as our Judge! What a wealth of knowledge Judi has to judge this favorite Show of Wire breeders everywhere! Judi handled her ring with grace and poise and made some really nice choices. I am sure she enjoyed her task. It must be very nice for the judge to be able to choose from many nice dogs. As usual, our Committee people did an excellent job. Jeremi and Taya Bryant had a beautiful trophy table. It was lovely! Dot and Fred Salzberg were everywhere, helping with every task. Dot planned the Banquet menu and Fred once again made hanging badges for all club members, helping us to immediately recall names of acquaintances we don’t see very often. Our Hospitality Suite was once again set up and run by Greg Henderson and his helpers. What good conversations take place in that suite, as everyone has an opportunity to look through to old scrapbooks and reminisce. We are also fortunate to have David and Patricia Weaver taking care of Catalog Sales and assisting in many other aspects of the show. Joelen Heslep was unable to attend this year’s show, but coordinated the Catalog Ads very well. Dayne Jordan, our Videographer, took 10 hours of video using two cameras. It has taken some time to edit the footage, but he is finished with his work and Elise Singer will be mailing the DVDs to you soon. I want to thank Elise for taking on yet another task, as well Mari Morrisey for her flawless narration. The job of narrator is a difficult one requiring a person who is familiar with the kennel names, the owner and breeders’ names, as well as the names of the dogs and handlers. Mari has performed this job for many years and wants to hand the reins over to another person. If you feel you might be able to serve the Club in this capacity, please contact either me or Club President, Shellie Magraw. All of us were delighted to have professional dog photographer and advertising specialist, Krista Droop, taking our win photos as well as ring candids. Isn’t it wonderful to be able to see all of the photos online at Krista’s website? These are memories to be cherished forever. Krista is a welcome addition to our show and we are so lucky to have her! Some of the most important contributors are the countless workers who take care of things behind the scenes. Barb Batala, Ray Lowe, Barbara Oz, served as Grounds Committee, with Chair, Stanley Thatcher. Ray Low rented a truck and drove to Sharonville to retrieve things stored in our locker there and rented a new locker in Wilmington at some cost savings to our club. Merchandise Sales were once again led by Linda Albrecht and Jackie Thatcher. Two of the greatest responsibilities for our show are taken on each year by Martha Smith, our tireless Catalog Coordinator, and Cara Campbell, who provides the Education Programs for our show. The Catalog was so beautifully done and no one could do it better, yet Martha plans to retire from this important job. We need a member to step up and assume the job of preparing the Catalog. Martha can tell you what the job entails. Please consider contributing by taking over this position. How thankful we are to have Joe and Janice Wavra and Vince and Sally McConville handling the silent auction and club raffle! Our members bring wonderful Wire things and the Wavras and McConvilles display, raffle, and auction them, bringing thousands of dollars to help pay for our show. This is yet another example of how everyone works together to make this show such a success. Joe makes it all fun and entertaining at the same time. Thank you for your great contribution to the funding and especially for the fun!! I know the Club officers work tirelessly all year long, but no one contributes more to the success of our show than Club Secretary, Sally Lowe. Sally is irreplaceable, though she has stepped down and has found a very capable replacement in Kathy Voss for this year-long job.. Thank you, Sally and Kathy, and all others who make this show such a success. Again, I want to thank everyone who pitched in to help this year, and if I have not mentioned your name, please forgive me. It takes ALL of us to put on this successful show every year. We are a family and the rest of the dog world must be jealous of the bond we all share. See you next year!

Altha Altha Graham, Show Chair

First Impressions of Central States Submitted by Patty Gorey and James Bond This was my first time to Central States .It was an 1100 mile round trip from New Jersey to Ohio, just me and James Bond. We took 2 days to get there and back. I rented book CD’s from the library to make the trip more interesting. I booked into 2 different Red Roof Inns for my journey coming & going to the show. They are dog friendly & don’t charge extra for dogs. After being a member of Central States for 40 years I was FINALLY going to the show! My biggest push was Jesy Wahlsten, James Bond’s breeder, was coming from Minnesota with Virginia Matanic. If she could make the effort, so could I. Another factor was that Obedience and Rally were being offered for the first time as a match show. I have gotten 5 CD’s on Wires & trained 2 for CDX. I was hoping to do beginner Novice with James Bond. When I got to the Obedience and Rally practice I found out the rules for Beginner Novice just changed. I knew that it wouldn’t be fair to James Bond or myself to do off lead work without practice, so it was onto Plan B. Donna Johnson and Karen Passow were in charge of the Obedience and Rally. They were great. They explained and helped me through a Novice Rally course. James Bond had his Novice Rally title, but I knew nothing about Rally. Donna printed out all the possible Rally signs that I could get at the Match Friday night. I practiced the odd turning signs in the hotel hallway. I wanted to support The Club on this new venue. They got 20 entries in Obedience and Rally! More than they had expected. We got a green ribbon & qualified at this match. I was thrilled! Thursday afternoon after Obedience and Rally help, we got grooming help. I can strip a Wire, but I don’t know how to do the fine points. I had Cara Campbell and Bill McFadden helping me with James Bond. You can’t get any better than that! If you didn’t strip your Wire you got clipping help. The facility is set up with electric extensions. Seeing a hotel with 50 rooms of Wire people and 100 Wire entries was heaven. The hotel is beautiful with 5 floors of rooms. They have conference and banquet facilities. At the end of the facility is the Eukanuba Hall. It was built for any dog event, including Fly Ball and Agility. On Friday it rained all day. It didn’t matter to us because we could go anywhere in the hotel with our dogs. The restaurant is the only place you can’t bring dogs. The food there is good and reasonable. None of us ventured away from the hotel that weekend. There was no need to. Besides your show people and handlers, you had performance people. I met Becky Heiner (She just got voted in as a new member.) and Hank from Agility fame. Hank is the #1 Wire Fox Terrier in PACH competition for 2012. Lucia Hackett and Bella were there. Bella is the movie star who is in “Moonrise Kingdom”. They did Open in Obedience going over jumps. I saw a 15 year old fluffy Wire that had once been an Agility champ in Japan. We all had a common interest, The Wire Hair Fox Terrier. On Friday night after Obedience and Rally they had a meet and greet in the hotel lobby. There was food supplied by the club and a cash bar. They were also selling $5 raffle tickets for 3 items. I didn’t know what the items were, but I gave $5 to support the club. I never win anything, but this time I was the third winner! I won a Wire Fox Terrier butler. We all got lovely gift bags from the Club and Eukanuba filled with goodies. Saturday night at the dinner there’s a silent auction and raffle. You put your name on 30 tickets. They were 30 tickets for $20. Being that Patty was so common I put James Bond on all my tickets for a laugh. I was hoping the announcer would pick one of my tickets. He did towards the end and I won a show lead. There are so many items in the silent auction and raffle that most people come away with something. Sunday morning is the downer. It’s the one last breakfast with your friends old and new. Everyone is packing up and getting ready for their long journey home. Am I going next year? You bet. I encourage all of you Wire owners out there to try to plan on coming to Central States next year. There were people there from all over the country. Bring your Obedience, Rally & maybe your Agility dogs. They are hoping to introduce Agility next year. Of course the beautiful show dogs will be there, too. Some of them were so well groomed they looked like statues! Sky was there and looked like perfection. She won BIS. The Club is welcoming all of us. I hope that more of us come out next year. It would be so nice to put faces and dogs to the names we see everyday on our lists. Cara Campbell, Altha Graham, and The Club have posted a lot of photos on Facebook and The Club website. For now all I have is the happy memories and new friendships to build on for next year.

Degenerative Myelopathy Submitted by Diane Moorman

Dr Joan Coates & Dr Gary Johnson & associates (University of Missouri) in collaboration with Drs Claire Wade & Kirsten Lindblad-Toh & associates (Broad Institute at MIT) identified a mutation that is the primary risk factor for Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) in many breeds of dogs, and a DNA test for this disorder has been available since May 2008. DM is a spinal cord deterioration with clinical symptoms appearing in older dogs – most are 8-10yrs old or older, but onset at age 7 and as late as 15yrs has been documented. The first symptoms typically observed are dragging of the hind toes and hind limb weakness, progressing over several months to muscle wasting and a complete loss of control of hind limbs, at which point most owners opt for euthanasia for their dog. The mutation found to be responsible for DM in dogs is the equivalent of the most common inherited form of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, in humans. The research team is collaborating with researchers from the ALS Foundation to develop a treatment that may be brought to clinical trial in dogs, and eventually could hold promise for humans as well. The mutation was discovered in Boxers and Pembroke Welsh Corgis, and has now been shown to be present in over 120 breeds, from toy to giant breeds and representing all variety groups, and in mixed breed dogs. Postmortem examination of spinal cord sections have been recruited from clinically symptomatic dogs, and the microscopic changes in the spinal cord typical of DM have been documented in over 25 breeds and mixed breed dogs. While some breeds have a much higher prevalence of this disease than others, it appears that DM can appear in any breed or mix. The DNA test is available through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), and can be ordered online using their Online Store. The test clearly shows dogs who do not have the mutation (normal), dogs who have one normal copy of the gene and one mutated copy of the gene (carrier), and those dogs with 2 mutated copies of the gene (affected/at risk). It is important to understand that not all dogs testing “at risk” will develop clinical symptoms of DM within their lifetime. Because of the wide variation of age of onset, there are genetically “at risk” dogs that may die from other causes before DM symptoms appear. Additional research is underway to develop a method for determining more precisely which dogs with the “at risk” genetic profile will develop symptoms relatively early (6-8yrs) and which will remain symptom- free until 14-16yrs of age (which could potentially die earlier from other causes with no DM symptoms observed). Compared to some of the breeds where DM is well documented, we have not tested large numbers of Fox Terriers. As of 4-8-13, we have DNA-tested 30 Smooth Fox Terriers, and 79 Wire Fox Terriers for the known DM mutation. We have interesting results that we are still working to understand. These samples were primarily collected at random at dog shows, in the collection here for other reasons (other DNA research, or general DNA banking), or by owners choosing to send samples for testing. In the Smooths, all 30 dogs have tested NORMAL, and none were reported with clinical signs of DM. Wires are a very different picture though – of the 79 tested, only 1 tested NORMAL, 7 tested CARRIER, and 71 tested AFFECTED/AT RISK. There were 33 samples sent by veterinarians or neurologists from dogs that did show clinical signs of DM, and we have received spinal cord samples (post mortem) from 2 Wire Fox Terriers and did confirm the cellular changes typical of DM in those cords. Speaking to a few Wire Fox Terrier breeders and owners, they have told us that they are not aware of dogs with clinical signs, and had not heard of this disease in the breed. Clearly it is present in Wires, but it could be that most dogs have a late onset and perhaps are dying from other causes without showing clinical signs of DM, or it could be that clinical signs are present, and are not being recognized as DM. While not reason for panic, with this number of dogs identified with the genetic profile that leads to development of DM in a breed of small numbers, it would be wise to test at least the dogs making a major genetic contribution to the breed (widely used stud dogs, and bitches producing multiple litters) so that the prevalence does not inadvertently increase. We recommend breeders test their breeding stock for the DM mutation, and include knowledge of the test result in the overall decision-making process when choosing breeding partners. With careful and wise use of the test, overall risk of DM can be reduced while retaining the essential good qualities of the breed. With such a high frequency of the mutation, this could be a bit of a challenge for Wire Fox Terrier breeders, but it is something the fanciers should be aware of so they can begin to address the problem.

23

24

Ideally, we recommend testing all breeding stock so that breeders can make informed choices, and try to avoid producing puppies destined to be at risk for DM. Dogs testing carrier, and even affected/at risk CAN be used in a breeding program to keep all their other positive traits in the breed – if bred to a mate that has been DNA-tested normal, resulting pups can be no worse than carrier. Using the test wisely, genetic diversity and positive breed traits can be retained while reducing the incidence of the DM mutation in the breed. Obviously, with such a high percentage of the dogs testing AT RISK, there is no way to remove all these dogs from the gene pool and maintain a healthy & diverse gene pool, or maintain essential breed qualities. For additional information on the disease, discovery, research, and recommendations, please see the information on our website – go to www.CanineGeneticDiseases.net, in the DEGENERATIVE MYELOPATHY section. As outlined in the RESEARCH and SAMPLE SUBMISSION portions of the website, any dog that is symptomatic for DM will be tested at no charge. For general screening of any dog, including breeding stock and other young, healthy dogs, testing kits can be ordered through OFA – go to www.OFFA.org, look to the left side and down a little bit for the OFA/MU DNA TESTS link, and then follow the links to order the DM test. OFA will send instructions and a kit to collect DNA by cheek swab, the test is run in the University of Missouri lab, and results reported to owners by OFA. If there are additional questions not answered by the website, contact information is listed below. We hope that this news will be shared with the entire Fox Terrier community, and that availability of this test will be seen as an opportunity toward improved overall health for the breed. If there are other inherited diseases of concern to the Fox Terrier community, our lab is always willing to discuss possibilities for additional research. Membership Report

Submitted by: Sally Lowe Dear Members, As membership chairman I just wanted to send a quick note. As a club it is important for us to have a steady growth of new membership, but we also need to make sure that new members will benefit by joining and also be an asset to the club. Now that I have passed my secretarial position to Kathy Voss (and she is still speaking to me!) I am going to be able to concentrate more on the membership position. I want to encourage you to get to know people before agreeing or offering to sponsor applicants for membership. With our new location we have such a great opportunity to grow and expand but that will take all our participation to make it a success. We want to make sure that new members will help and participate to keep the club going strong. We also need to make sure that new members will understand and uphold the ideals and goals of the club. As the members of this club it is our responsibility to make sure the applicants we sponsor will share and appreciate these goals. Sally Lowe Membership Chairman
