Dalian Today is all about profiling our proud city for the benefit of the expat community and its local friends. Even though it is a young city, it has an interesting past and a strong present. It is also a business-friendly and international city of the future. Most importantly, it is a city of hope. Most expats are here because of their hopes and dreams of a better tomorrow. Every expat, whatever their interaction with the city, has befitted hugely from coming to Dalian. When assignments end, many expats are most reluctant to leave. What is it about this city that moves people to love it? There are many things that come to mind, but the best of Dalian is certainly the soul of the city, which is its people - both expats and locals. An amazing expat who comes to mind is Katya Lensky who did so much for the expat community. Sadly, she recently passed away after a short battle with cancer, but her loving legacy lives on. She was too young and too good to die, but she will live on in our hearts and memories forever. We also salute our Dalian shapers and social entrepreneurs who contribute greatly to Dalian by supporting the Dalian Today. They are the advertisers present in this special issue with their important messages. Projects like the fabulous Sino Ocean seaside villas, which includes an exciting new school with a choice of international curriculums such as IB, AP and A Levels, and the Eton Properties project in downtown Dalian, which is radically changing the skyline of Dalian, are the foundations of hope in building Dalian's future. It is this same hope that makes us at the Dalian Today work unceasingly at bringing communities together. Our innovative ideas, as always, are geared towards making life in Dalian more beautiful, more informative, and more joyful. This Calendar issue is certainly one of them. Enjoy!

LAST WORD
Expat Confession **** ******
Thoughts on the New Year Through the Eyes of a Foreigner I confess that we at a paradox in time. At a time when we seem to defy the very laws of nature, by building the tallest buildings, the widest roads and the longest tunnels, we are also defying our humaneness by our short tempers, narrow minds, and haste to blame. Therefore, here is a puzzle - to look ahead or look behind, that is the question. Whether it is nobler in the mind to forget the past and plunge blindly into the future, without a backward glance, or shift through past moments, that might be learning curves and guidelines to the present or the future. A wise man once said, to forget history is to repeat it! Learning from the past is one thing, but to dwell on it is another. New beginnings are vital, especially to expats who have the added burden of coping with feelings of homesickness and missing all that is familiar. New beginnings do not necessarily have to be the beginning of a new year, but it is a good place to start. Most people have the experience of breaking their New Year resolutions before they even begin. Unfortunately, most times we set our goals too high. How many have said, "I will run the Great Wall Marathon," before they have even tried running up the Black Mountain. Start with the Black Mountain and the Great Wall will follow. My New Year resolution this year is simple; it is to pursue my dreams, how ever small or inconsequent, and ignore the people who try to put obstacles in my way. My dreams are humble and realistic. I want to exercise every day and continue to be healthy. I want to fill my life with positive thoughts and positive
people. I want to laugh everyday. I want to pursue excellence and I want to continue to write and publish. I want to be a role model for my daughter and a loving wife. I want to banish discord and hate in my life, by filling my world with love. My strategy is to keep things simple, and do everything to make my life and others more meaningful and happy. The Year of the Dragon is not to be taken lightly. It is going to be 365 days that you can fill with victories. Imagine, a brand new book, waiting for your personal epic to be written on its empty pages. What an exciting thought! At the stroke of the midnight between 1011 and 1012, you have been given a clean slate, with all the mistakes and problems of the past erased. You are at the starting post of a new year and you have to ensure that you are on the right track. This golden opportunity cannot be wasted, you have to make everyday count and make everyday a new beginning. It is never too late to start fresh, to mend those broken bridges, heal open wounds, and steer away from bad habits and addictions. You are Odysseus on the voyage of life, writing your own Odyssey - safely steering your family through the churning and sometimes troubled waters of expat life, out-witting enemies and overcoming limitations, with your sights firmly set on your ultimate goal. The very fact that you are an expat, on the opposite end of the world, daring to go where many fear to tread, makes you a leader. You have courage, tolerance and faith, the three pillars of new beginnings. So, make 2012 your year, a year that will surely belong to the dragon-hearted. In short, "Happy New Year!"
