Exteriorly, architecture design needs response to the context, climate, and urban condition. Interiorly, architecture design need consider the need for the program, the usage of space, the logic of circulation and the inhabitant's experience. Technologically, architecture design need deal with the optimization of structure, the cooperation between passive design and active design, and sustainability design for the future built environment. Above all are parts of the architecture, architecture is about the city, the society, and the human. It is defined in terms of activities. It is talking about space which is permanent.

GARY TRANSIT STATION Gary, IN, 2018 Arch 302 Advisor: Josh R Coggeshall Designed in Collaboration with Antonio Medina 1st Place MKM Sponsored Steel Buidling Competition

The transit station explores the relationship between building and ground, to fully integrate with the context of the site (currently an under-utilized public park).Tucking transit, retail, offices, and other programming under a single envelope designates different areas of usable space, activating the entire site. The design pulls inspiration from the Thompson Center in Chicago for integrating mixed used with design; creates an understandable language of Gary’s untapped potential for its community. Despite remaining strong and hopeful, Gary remains limited. Using drawing and modeling as notions of thinking and organizing the characteristics of Gary; the design creates a conversation of not building a new Gary in hope creating new, but rather reshape Gary and tap into the full protentional of community. Using principles of social, environmental, political and cultural characteristics, they create the notion of multiples forces of the community and industrial in those characteristics to integrate that of one single driving force by the creation of topology and morphology relations.

Institute for the Study and Application of Biophilic patterns New York, 2017 Institute for the study and application of Biophilic patterns aims to a designfor-sustainability facility on the Brooklyn Pier. The great opportunity for the site is its great surround view which Manhattan’s skyline is over the sea presenting the fascination. Water, as a significant element, provides a board and clean platform for all of these and serves as a connection between human, city, and nature. The design intent is specific to Biophilic design referencing Biomorphic Forms & Patterns, Visual Connection with Nature and Non-Visual Connection with Nature.

Hao Xu

Embedded within Brooklyn pier, the Institute was designed in response to the spirit of the thriving civic landscape and the unparalleled viewsheds to the fabled Lower Manhattan skyline. Appearing as if sculpted by the water and wind, the building seamlessly floats on the water and blends in with nature. The Institute deepens the connection of the surrounding residential communities with nature.

Manhattan Lower Manhattan, the central borough for business, culture, and government. It is offering wonderful and iconic Manhattan skyline.

Brooklyn Bridge Park is an 85-acre postindustrial waterfront site stretching 1.3 miles along Brooklyn’s East River edge. The site spans from Jay Street, north of the Manhattan Bridge, to Pier 6 and Atlantic Avenue in the south. The site is long and narrow with a crenulated edge formed by its reclaimed piers.

BIOMORPHIC FORMS & PATTERNS "Biomorphic Forms & Patterns has evolved from research on view preferences, reduced stress due to induced shift in focus, and enhanced concentration. We have a visual preference for organic and biomorphic forms but the science behind why this is the case is not yet formulated. While our brain knows that biomorphic forms and patterns are not living things, we may describe them as symbolic representations of life." - Terrapin Bright Green, 2014

Symbolic representations of life

Biomorphic Forms & Patterns are symbolic references to contoured, patterned, textured or numerical arrangement that persist in nature.

Digital Object Lab - Manufactured Glitch Study 124 Conch Street, Bikini Bottom, 2018 Arch 498 Advisor: James Kerestes The project is to exploit the lantent design possilities within contemporary mediums and tools in search of untapped design opportunities and alternative readings of familiar objects. Each digital model has its digital DNA to control its performs and looks. The method for exploring the potential of the models is to retionalize and alter its DNA. The glitch phenomena is made with the effect of the DNA changement.

Throughout the project, the primitive and recognizable objects were deviated to better understand inherent logics within the objects' coding. The Columbus Museum of Art

type: studio final - solo

instructor: James Underwood

Columbus, IN, Spring 2017 The Columbus Museum of Art attempts to find a delicate balance between the celebration of the modernism history and the progressive exploration on architecture and arts. The site of the museum is situated between Lindsay St. and Brown Street, Columbus, north of the site is a high traffic volume roundabout. Shifting the museum plaza to the middle the museum enclosed by the buildings weakens the traffic distraction. The Main buildings of

Hao Xu

the museum are sunken into the ground, along with the pedestrian plaza, making the museum sensitive to the ground below and exposed to the surrounding. Hardwood trusses as provide the major structure, creating a major open space for the gallery, meanwhile unique joinery and tectonics of the structure add visual interests in the museum. The museum will be the new “art community, attracting people to gather, communicate and interact.

North Christian Church

First Christian Church

Columbus is a typical city in midwest, but it provides a unique place for noted Modern architecture and public art, commissioning numerous works. Many national historic landmarks and notable modern buildings designed by some famous architects are across the city. First Baptist Church design by Harry Weese features its high-pitched roof and skylight. First Christian Church designed by Eliel Saarinen was one of the first Modern religious buildings in America. And

Hao Xu

First Baptist Church

North Christian Church designed by Eero Saarinen is hexagonal in shape, with a central metal spire. Thus, the important design concept is to keep the modernism element to reflect the local culture and celebrate the world-renowned design heritage of the Columbus area. Besides, the site for the museum is embraced by the heavy traffic. The design idea needs to decrease the noisy effects to create a tranquil exhibit place for visitors

instructor: Kristin Barry

Muncie, IN, Fall 2016 As a mainstay of the local coummity, Marting - Hunt library aims to prvoide enriching, education content in a friendly environment for the neighbors. The exiting interior facilities layout limited the increasing need of youth services and programs. The focus of the "accessible and innovative services" is exploring the retrofit within the extiting construction to creat a youth-friendly atmospheric environment.

Hao Xu

The proposal of youth area renovation is to make the space adapted for teenagers (age range from 3- 15 ) to have their space learning and exploring. The retrofit stategies inclues redefine the use of space and the design of furnither. The goal of the retrofit strategy is to positively alter the intenal life of Maring - Hunt Libary and bring more potential to meet the variety for teenagers.

Folding installation

type: studio final - team instructor: Sean Burns partner: Nate Brower

CAP, Ball state university, Spring 2016

1:1 scale inhabitable and thematic designed space

The design of this model came from using fundamentals and operations of folding to create a series of surfaces that explore the conditions of joints, triangulated creases, and the separating of a paper as informative elements to the surface skin of a sheet of paper. Furthermore we folded these joints and triangulated creases to make a more three dimensional shape that could form into a space. Using the information gathered from the initial studies, we construct a 1:1 scale installation of Cardboard that explores and expresses atmospheric behavior of reading. We used a second system of wood as the frame work that offered as the support for the folded skin. We wanted to show how we made our model by detaching the skin in some areas, and just

Hao Xu

showed the bones. We picked this space because it is right next to the window if gives a nice warm comfy feeling to read at. The size of our space is mainly for one person to be in a private area. The shape of our model also forces the reader to move within the space in the same way. The reader walks in the entrance, gradually turns left, and sits down. After vreading he gradually stands up, and leaves the same way he came in.
