Why We Avoid Toxic Chemicals A D E S C R I P T I O N A B O U T YO U R S E C T I O N
100,000 chemicals are on store shelves today. They were grandfathered in by the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976. This means that these chemicals on store shelves haven’t had safety testing, and we know very little side effects. These are the products we use on ourselves and our babies, so it’s important that we know exactly what we’re using.
“It is unthinkable that women would knowingly inflict such exposures on infants and children and themselves if products were routinely labeled with explicit warnings of cancer risks. But they are not labeled.” -Dr. Samuel Epstein, chairman of Cancer Prevention Coalition Of the chemicals tested, toxic labeling is required only if 50% or more of the animals tested with a chemical die. Under the TSCA, manufacturers are protected by trade secrets laws that allow them to keep their ingredient lists a secret. This is one of many reasons we want to avoid toxic chemicals in the home. Ellentesque purus nulla, ullamcorper vel mauris eget, volutpat pellentesque nunc. Etiam eu nisl volutpat, auctor urna ut, elementum erat. Curabitur vestibulum semper blandit. Cras tempus venenatis egestas. Integer eleifend augue risus, et ullamcorper est accumsan sit amet. Mauris maximus urna ac metus aliquam faucibus.

H O W T O B E C O M E AWA R E O F T O X I C CHEMICALS The bottle looks cute and makes promises of a germ free environment. The bottle may even warn of immediate health dangers or poisoning, but what’s missing from the label is the hidden danger of long term toxicity. Conventional cleaning products wreak havoc on the respiratory system, cellular health and even mental clarity of those who are exposed to them. The Volatile Organic Compounds, (gases emitted from certain solids or liquids which represent a variety of chemicals) of the cleaning agents remain in the air long after the surface has been cleaned. While there is not yet a standard of safety established for nonindustrial buildings, it is interesting to note that OSHA does regulate the carcinogenic VOC formaldehyde to a permissible level of .75ppm. + The average home measures an astonishing VOC level of 50ppb. + A common furniture polish reads 275 ppb after exposure while surfaces wipes often requested on the school shopping lists measure 1.798 ppb after use. + The VOC measure of a common surface spray advertising to kill 99.9% of germs at 12,000+ ppm.

Notice we have no moved from parts per billion to parts per million. It is no wonder that the quality of air inside your home is now five to seven times more toxic than outdoor air quality. The consumer household cleaning products sales market was a 7.3 Billion dollar industry in 2007. The good new is, thanks to consumer awareness, the sale of chemical household products is slowing from a previous growth rate of 10% annually. C H E M I C A L S T O AVO I D There are so many chemicals in our everyday products that are harmful to our health and bodies without us even knowing. What we want to do is empower our people, educate on what to avoid, how to avoid it. Here are a few to be aware of: Fragrance: Short term toxicity can include coughing, skin irritation, rash, wheezing, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and irritability. Long term toxicity can include cancer, lung disease, heart disease and reproductive disorders. Found in: scented candles, shampoo, perfumes, lotions, and more Triclosan: Used in many formulations as an antibacterial agent to prevent or reduce bacterial contamination and registered as a pesticide by the EPA. Topical absorption of triclosan has shown disturbances to the endocrine system, and is believed to lead to birth defects and uncontrollable cell growth. Found in: soaps, deodorants, cosmetics, shave gel, first aid spray, kitchenware and children’s toys.

Phthalates: A low cost endocrine disrupting chemical that in lab studies has shown to interfere with hormone production in rats and mimic estrogen in human studies. Found in: plastic food packaging, lotions, skin moisturizers, fragrance, cleaners, glues and nail polish. Formaldehyde: This is a known carcinogen and recognized as such by the Cancer Institute. Exposure can cause eye irritation, asthmatic response, skin irritation, headaches and nausea. Long term effects include cancer and possibly leukemia. Although products generally contain small amounts, when this chemical is used in many common everyday household items in addition to being present in our wood, sheetrock and furniture, our exposure adds up. To make things even more alarming, this isn’t an easy ingredient to find. The ingredients is often listed as it’s fragmented name. Found in: baby shampoo, pet shampoo, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, sunblocks, cosmetics, baby wipes, toothpaste, and more. + ½ cup Baking Soda
+ 20-30 drops Essential Oils

Directions: 1. Combine all the ingredients well. 2. Let sit to air dry a bit and then transfer into glass jar with lid. That’s it! 3. Add 2-3 TBSP into your wash. Right into the drum with the clothes. Notes: Epsom salt will completely dissolve in water and is just the ‘vehicle’ to get the scent into your laundry – it may also add a little softening as well. Baking Soda is a natural deodorizer and helps keep your laundry bright! This is a much cheaper option for boosting that scent! Custom Scent Ideas:
Basil + Lemon Myrtle
Lavender + Rosemary
Lemongrass + Balsam Fir + Lemon
Joy + Lavender Gentle Baby
