The philosophy of HAPPYsthlm is based upon their agreement to disagree. They work with different materials, have contrasting artistic expressions and are three individual personalities. - Some people avoid diversity but we welcome it, says Caroline Lindholm, jewellery designer. It’s proven to be a winning concept. Together with Katarina Andersson, ceramic designer, and Kajsa Aronsson, textile designer, they have created a dynamic unison.

They share a great respect for the tradition of arts and crafts as well as the renowned design history that characterises the Scandinavian art industry. Still, even if they are firmly rooted in tradition their driving force is not only building on this legacy but to bring a fresh take on Swedish design heritage for the future. - We strive to exploit the energy that lies in the contrast between the past and the future, and harness the dynamics that emerge from our own differences, says Katarina Andersson.

The three designers were first thrown together by practical realities - they shared the same workplace. It soon became obvious that they also shared the same attitude towards their work. Each one is down to earth, forthright, and are sincerely open to feedback. Furthermore, after many years of freelancing they wished to be more hands on with every stage of the production. This common approach made it possible to unite, in spite of their differences. Kajsa Aronsson is energetic, always moving forward, Katarina Andersson is analytical and reflective, whilst Caroline is practical and innovative in finding solutions. Their improvised and impromptu creative discussions soon turned into more formal scheduled sessions, which naturally evolved into HAPPYsthlm. Many people in their field tend to be lone wolves however Katarina, Caroline and Kajsa have a different approach. - I have worked many years in this industry and I know I can accomplish a great deal on my own, says Kajsa Aronsson. - But when my skill and experience is combined with the others we have limitless potential.

In every step of the way HAPPYsthlm’s work is a collective achievement. Every new creation, print, vase, necklace is preceded by a vivid and dynamic discussion, where each of them engage their unique skills and talents.

Because of their respect and admiration for the Swedish craft tradition, they make an instinctive commitment to work with small suppliers in Sweden. Smaller businesses are more flexible, and are able to meet their needs with ease, and thus freeing more of their time and efforts to the creative process. Most importantly however, is the professionalism, fine skills and workmanship these small businesses can bring. In their eyes, it is this that can take the designs and creative process to new heights.

The shop, located in Gamla Stan, was opened in June 2012 and has already become the hub that they were hoping for. It is a place where they can gather and focus on their mutual work. But more importantly it is a visual statement of what HAPPYsthlm stands for; respect for knowledge and experience, openness to diversity and future possibilities. It’s all there to be seen, in the flowing patterns on the curtains and pillows, in the gleaming reflections along the strong lines of the vases and in the daring floral jewellery designs. It’s Scandinavia with an edge. And it’s lots of fun.

HAPPYsthlm was founded in a courtyard studio in Stockholm in 2007 by ceramic designer Katarina Andersson, silversmith Caroline Lindholm and textile designer Kajsa Aronsson. In the summer of 2012 HAPPYsthlm opened its first shop/showroom in Gamla Stan, Stockholm. HAPPYsthlm is also represented in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, UK, USA and Japan.
