Rural Lifestyle Update Spring 2016
The Season of Promise Warm and Dry... It’s expected to be a warm dry spring here in Canterbury and the local lifestyle market is certainly heating up with sales continuing to climb, there were over *600 lifestyle sales in the local market for the 12 months (ended in August), this is a growth of near 10% compared to the same period last year, with pricing for quality stock continuing to be strong. (*Reinz sales data for Hurunui, Waimakariri, Christchurch, Selwyn and Banks Peninsula District Councils)
Our Canterbury lifestyle properties will be stunning in the coming months as the spring growth takes off, and of course this means we’re moving into the busy time of the year when the warmer and longer days provide an impetus for interest in Lifestyle Real Estate. We’ve noticed more new entrants to the market as people look to enjoy the country life and accordingly there’s been an increase in listings recently as people prepare to move on, often seeking an upgrade within the lifestyle market. For some of us we’ll have the usual spring activity of balancing our daily duties with the additional requirements of lambing, calving
etc... and for some of us this may be the first time we’ve experienced this wonderful time of the year on a small farm. Be prepared, take the time to seek guidance, talk to your vet and seek help from the experts when needed, you’re not alone. Nature of course has her box of tricks, and when you least expect it she’ll throw a curve ball at you, so be prepared as best you can, in particular we shouldn’t assume the spring grass growth will take care of any feeding issues we endured over the winter months. Continue to manage your stock movements carefully (be mindful of lambing requirements), perhaps it’s time to talk to the local soil management experts about maximising the opportunities on your small holding, you may benefit from applying some additional nutrients.
