Ingredients 2 cups flour

150g butter

½ tsp baking soda

1 egg, beaten

1 Tbsp Gregg’s Ground Ginger

½ cup Chelsea Icing Sugar

1 cup (220g) firmly packed Chelsea Soft Brown Sugar or Chelsea Dark Cane Sugar

Food colouring and lollies to decorate

To Make Preheat oven to 180°C. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Sift flour, baking soda and ground ginger together and place in a bowl or food processor. Add Chelsea Soft Brown Sugar or Dark Cane Sugar. Add butter and rub in with fingertips or pulse in food processor until resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add egg and stir, or pulse to mix. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour to the mix and wrap in cling wrap. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Roll out on lightly floured surface or between 2 sheets of baking paper until 5mm thick. Using cookie cutters, cut shapes and place on tray. Form leftover dough into a ball and re-roll and repeat cutting out until all the dough is used up. Bake gingerbread men for 8-10 minutes or until cooked and golden. Remove from oven and cool on baking rack. Make icing by adding a few drops of food colouring and 11⁄2 tsp water to the icing sugar. Drop a small amount under each spot where you wish to place a lolly.

Posting up on any social media when your home is going to be empty is a “no-no” as this tells burglars the house is unattended. Avoid uploading photos of any Christmas gifts that you have bought as it gives thieves a catalogue of your shopping, and which houses to visit, just by going onto your Facebook page.

When we get our rubbish collected over Christmas and New Year, the dates and times often change.

This not only makes your home feel cosy but also ensures that any valuable items are kept out of sight. Plug in some timers and place them around your home to give the illusion of someone at home when you’re out.

02. Festive lighting: You may think that running a few lights outside is perfectly safe, and it is, providing you don’t feed extension cables through partially opened windows. Criminals know to look out for this!

Check with your local authority before the holidays start when your refuse will be collected and avoid putting your gift packaging out until just before being collected. Packaging left out early gives unwanted visitors (thieves) information about the expensive gifts you received at Christmas that may be found in your home.
