Philippa Sibley

An intelligent, inspiring cookbook based on childhood memories from Malaysia.

Philippa Sibley’s New Classics is a must-have companion for those wanting to learn best practice cooking techniques and how to perfect timeless recipes.

From comforting Sunday noodles to sweet dumplings and spicy crab, the recipes Chui Lee Luk creates – both at home and in her high-end restaurant Claude’s – hold some essence of her earliest and most revered food memories. In Pickled Plums and Hawker Stalls, Chui recollects memorable and influential eating experiences from her childhood in Sabah, Malaysia, and shares how her memories have inspired the food she recreates today. This book is an inspirational reference of sorts – as Chui Lee Luk shows how she connects to food from her past, she helps readers to be inspired by their own sense of history.

Philippa Sibley’s New Classics is filled with modern reinterpretations of classic French and Italian-inspired recipes. Divided into two sections, the first half contains essential tips and instructions for culinary cooking basics, and the second half shares recipes of Philippa’s own personal, modern spin on classic dishes - learn how to make her delicious tuna nicoise, steak tartare, summer cassoulet, confit duck and smoked sardines. Beautifully designed and filled with detailed step-by-step photography as well as stunning hero shots, this cookbook will become an invaluable go-to cooking guide and recipe favourite in everyone’s kitchen. Also Available: PS DESSERTS £25.00 Hardback ISBN 9781742702049 272 pages, 265 x 220 mm

Born in Singapore and raised in Sabah, Malaysia, Chui Lee Luk moved to Australia at the age of seven. Sharing meals and a passion for food at the kitchen table were part of her family life. Encouraged to pursue a profession, she studied law, Chinese literature and art, but after working as a solicitor Chui followed her passion in the culinary field and joined Claude’s, one of Australia’s most successful restaurants. Chui took over Claude’s in 2004 and remains one of the few women chefs to achieve 3-hatted success.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Rob Meyers Behind Closed Doors is a collection of inspiring photographs of creative people’s homes, taken by them. Through his varied contacts in the magazine and arts worlds, Rob Meyers sent a batch of disposable cameras out to a whole variety of artists, musicians, photographers and bloggers and asked if they would take pictures of their favourite parts of their home. The only rule: they had to photograph the contents of their fridge. Much to his surprise, many people sent back a full camera. The result is a unique, intimate insight into the homes (and fridges) of some of the world’s most interesting people. Wander around the house of Courtney Love, Martha Stewart, Jeremy Scott, Daphne Guinness, Gilbert & George, Tavi Gevinson and more. STREET ART

Lou Chamberlin A colourful and dynamic exploration of Melbourne’s street art scene. Street art is a visual conversation between many voices; an open-air exhibition space that is constantly changing through the work of many people acting alone and yet together. It can be colourful, raw, controversial or witty. Melbourne has long been renowned for its dynamic street art scene that covers everything from stencils, paste-ups and yarn bombing to sprayed, rolled and brushed paintings that appear overnight on city streets. And because of its transient nature, street art is best recorded through photographs. Street Art is a witness and a celebration of street art photographed around Melbourne over the last eight years.

Lou Chamberlin is an artist, author and arts educator who has been teaching and writing about art and artists for 20 years. Her interest in street art has been fuelled by living and working in Melbourne with its vibrant and ever-changing street art scene. She has also researched and prepared photo-documentation of the street art of Rio de Janeiro and Valparaiso.

The golden rule of knot tying is to avoid haste: take your time, and think about what you are doing. When a number of knots are used in a rig, and those knots are tied in haste, then you increase the chance of knot failure. This is exacerbated when tying complicated knots that require a higher degree of concentration.

KNOTS AND RIGS

Another group of knots which deserve special attention are boating knots. Every weekend thousands of small boats are launched from boat ramps into rivers, lakes, bays and even the ocean. Keen anglers take their boating seriously, however too few give enough thought to the knots they employ. What is the good of finding fish and dropping the anchor only to have a knot on the anchor come undone? Or how about coming in to a mooring jetty after a day on the water and having your knot slip while you are walking up the ramp to collect your car and boat trailer? It happens. So, we have also included some knots that will come in handy on those days when you are using your boat.

Knots break when they slip, and knots slip when they are tied incorrectly. This is often the result of too many turns, or a failure to pull the knot securely. Putting too many turns around the standing line is a common problem. What happens is that the more turns there are, the harder it is to draw the knot down securely. On a dry line, a knot that isn’t lubricated will resist being pulled snug. The solution is to lubricate the line with saliva. When this is done, the line will draw down more easily, and snug up tight.

Blackfish (luderick) are finicky feeders, and setting the float correctly is about trial and error, with the weight governed by conditions and float size. Float attitude in the water is all important: the rig requires enough weight to sink the float and hold it in the vertical position, while pulling enough of the float under the surface so that minimal effort is required by the fish to pull it completely under. At the same time, a small amount of indicator must remain above water to indicate a bite.

Saltwater

This is a simpler version of the Balloon rig whereby instead of attaching the balloon with thread, the flared mouthpiece section of the balloon is pushed through one of the eyes of the swivel. Water pressure is enough to release the balloon, just make sure not to push the actual knot from the balloon through the swivel as it may lock and not release when taken.

In The Spirit of Gallipoli Patrick Lindsay places the Gallipoli campaign in context, telling the story through the eyes of those who were there. He delves into the remarkable spirit which sustained the Anzacs as they clung to the ridges in their baptism of fire, half a world from their homelands, and digs deep into the bedrock of the Australian character. Patrick writes for those who would never wade through a fully-fledged history book but who want to understand the extraordinary spirit that emerged from a doomed campaign. The Spirit of Gallipoli is a mustread for all those who want to understand what the Anzac spirit is and where it was forged.

SWING HIGH

SUMMERLANDISH

LIFE LESSONS FROM CHILDHOOD

LESSONS I NEVER LEARNT

Anthony Gunn

Summer Land

Be inspired to tap into your inner child and remember home truths you once knew, but have long forgotten in adulthood.

A hilarious memoir of growing up Generation Y in Gainsville, Florida, as the outspoken, outrageous child of an alternative single mum.

Swing High is a motivational book that offers tools to tackle the challenges that life throws our way – both big and small – using the life lessons and skills we knew as a child. With over 120 lessons ranging from holding your tongue when you’re angry, quite literally, to making time to play with your friends, Swing High will help you to tackle the challenges of daily life, face your fears and feel confident in yourself. Anthony Gunn combines famous quotes from international thought leaders with his own inspirational lessons, and highlights ways we can integrate these ideas into our lives.

Summerlandish is the memoir of 25 year old ‘average American girl’ Summer Land. From babyhood through to backpacking as a uni student, up to falling in love and moving to Australia, Summer recounts the hilarious stories that have made her the outspoken woman she is today. Summer is an attention-hungry, discretion-free egomaniac, who holds nothing back in detailing her collection of outrageous stories, which are nothing short of shocking.

COLETTE’S FRANCE HER LIFE AND LOVES

Jane Gilmour A lavishly illustrated biography of Colette, the French writer and key figure in French radical, artistic and intellectual life of the early 20th Century. This is the life story of a remarkable woman, known simply as Colette. Colette’s France relates the colourful life of leading French author Colette, author of Cheri, Gigi, and the Claudine novels, who lived a full and creative life as prodigious writer and journalist, risqué perfomer, lesbian lover, businesswoman, baroness and mother, lover and seducer, loyal friend and mentor and finally grand old lady of letters. people who had lived for a long time in this provincial backwater and for the most part were ‘influenced by its meanness and spitefulness’. How lonely she must have been after the stimulating and interesting life she had led in Brussels with her brothers and their literary friends. She was to suffer even more, when, after the death of her husband from a violent apoplectic attack, the gossip was such that the local justice of the peace prepared a damning report to the public prosecutor, condemning her morals, and accusing her of having let RobineauDuclos die without making any effort to help him. The report was based on no solid evidence, however, and there were no further consequences. It certainly helps to explain Sido’s subsequent aloofness from the other villagers and the closed and separate world she created for her second husband and children. There were two children from Sido’s first marriage, Juliette who was born in 1860 and Achille in 1863. Sido’s second husband, and the father of our Colette, was Jules-Joseph Colette. Like Sido he was not a local. He had arrived in Saint-Sauveur in 1860. JulesJoseph had been born in Toulon, in the south of France in 1826, and was destined for a career in the army, after graduating from the prestigious Saint-Cyr training academy. He joined the Zouaves and this handsome, brave young soldier served in Algeria, Turkey and Africa. He was quickly promoted to the rank of Captain. His military career was abruptly cut short when he was badly wounded in Melegnano in northern Italy. His left leg had to be amputated, he was pensioned out of the army and offered a sinecure as tax collector in Saint-Sauveur. It did not take this cultivated and gallant newcomer long to attract the attention and affection of Sido. Village gossip was soon abuzz and it was rumoured that Achille, Sido’s second child, was in fact fathered, not by Robineau-Duclos, but by the Captain. The truth of this rumour will never be known, but certainly Achille was very close to his mother and to Jules-Joseph Colette and much closer in looks and temperament to his younger sister and brother than to his older sister, Juliette. Robineau-Duclos died in 1865 and after the appropriate period of mourning, Sido was free to marry Jules-Joseph, defying the gossip and calumny that circulated freely amongst the citizens of Saint-Sauveur. These same citizens, in passing judgement on Sido, ignored the fact that Robineau-Duclos had continued to maintain a mistress, his former maid, throughout his marriage and that, from this liaison there was another son.

Colette’s life is one of artistic liberation and rebellion, which unfolds through the landscapes of France where she lived and loved - from a childhood in Burgundy to Belle Epoque Paris to Provence and St Tropez. Lavishly illustrated with photographs and artworks from her life and work, this biography tells of a passionate life well lived.

Dr Jane Gilmour has a personal passion and extensive knowledge of Colette and her life. Jane lived in France for many years where she completed her thesis on the writer. Jane frequently returns to France to extend her knowledge and to visit the regions where Colette lived, loved and worked. She has sourced unique and rarely seen images for Colette’s France.

BEST TIMES EVER

NEVER SAY DIE

WHY ALMOST EVERYTHING IS BETTER THAN IT USED TO BE

Mark Juddery

Stuart O’Grady

Best Times Ever explains why almost everything is far better than it used to be - it is an optimistic answer to those who say that everything is getting worse in our day and age.

Never Say Die is the memoir of Stuart O’Grady, one of Australia’s best-loved cyclists who has had a long and successful career as a professional road cyclist.

With conflicts around the globe, rampant environmental damage, economic struggles, poverty and the ongoing threat of terrorism, the world isn’t perfect right now. But is everything really going to hell in a handbasket? Should we really be feeling so miserable?

Stuart O’Grady’s cycling career started in track cycling when he won silver and bronze medals at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. After moving to road cycling, Stuart began competing in the Tour de France, wearing the yellow jersey in the 1998 race for three days and then for five days in 2001. He also won Cyclist of the Year and Male Road Cyclist for his country.

Best Times Ever briefly assesses 100 of our favourite things to complain about, and explains why, believe it or not, things aren’t as bad as they used to be. In fact, we’re actually improving! From the serious (the number of people dying in wars is 2,000 a year; in the 1950s, it was 65,000 a year) to the frivolous (Vertigo had bad reviews in 1957, was considered a cinema classic by 1987, and was recently voted the greatest movie ever made - so even movies get better), this is an optimistic answer to those who say that everything is getting worse. There is room for improvement, but we’re heading in the right direction! Humorous, light reading, but peppered with useful information and trivia and an all round uplifiting message.

Mark Juddery has been a journalist and freelance writer for over 20 years, with a blog in The Huffington Post. He also writes for television and theatre, and has written an award-winning screenplay and two general non-fiction books.

74

But O’Grady’s successful cycling career has not been without its crashes and close calls - in 2000, he pulled out of the Tour de France after breaking his collarbone in three places with 85 kilometres to the finish, yet he still finished the stage. In 2007, O’Grady abandoned on stage eight of the Tour de France after crashing on a descent, fracturing eight ribs, his right shoulder blade, right collar bone and three vertebrae, and puncturing his right lung. O’Grady crashed 30 km into the 2009 Milan – San Remo, suffering similarly devastating injuries. It’s these close calls which have given O’Grady the title of Mr Indestructible! Stuart O’Grady is a top Australian professional road cyclist. He and Graeme Brown won a gold medal in the Men’s Madison at the 2004 Summer Olympics. O’Grady has ridden the Tour de France since 1998 and contended for the points classification in the Tour de France, finishing second in the 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2005 races. In 2005, he was inducted into the Australian Institute of Sport ‘Best of the Best’.
