ROSE ROSACEAE

F

lourishing in the world’s tropical waterways, from the shallow bayous of Amazonia to the hot springs of Rwanda and fertile Paraguayan lagoons, freshwater Nymphaeaceae are a family of aquatic wonders. The family’s grand dames are giant waterlily (Victoria amazonica) and Santa Cruz waterlily (Victoria cruziana), majestic mega-plants named in honour of Queen Victoria. Indigenous South Americans used giant waterlily as a source of bush medicine, making tea to soothe asthma and other bronchial troubles. Growing from fleshy underground stems buried in the silty river bottoms, long stalks support the stiff, rimmed leaves of the giant waterlily, the pads with spikes underneath to deter nibbling fish. Their dramatic, solitary flowers bloom but two days a year, and only at night. Slowly, the white female flower rises above the water’s surface, releasing a sweet, pineapple fragrance, using its heat-producing power to warm its flower’s core. Lured by the pungent perfume, native scarab beetles fly inside, searching for nectar. Gently, the petals close around the beetle, keeping it trapped and warm. On the second night, the flower opens once again, this time as a pollinated male with pink petals. The beetle flits to the next white flower, unaware its sleepover has fertilised the magnificent giant whose flower slowly closes to descend below the water’s surface for another year. These exotic, oversized beauties were a must-have for fashionable greenhouses of nineteenth-century Europe, and French impressionist Claude Monet was so obsessed with Nymphaeaceae he imported a number of rare waterlilies from the Amazon and Egypt for his water garden at his home in Giverny. Local authorities demanded he uproot them, claiming the plants would poison the water supply, but Monet refused, deeply inspired by the ethereal floating pads, distinctive flowers and ephemeral reflections of light on the pond – he painted canvas after canvas. During this period, his wife and son died, and Monet was tortured by his inability to create. Devastated, in mourning, and distraught by a diagnosis of cataracts, it was the garden that healed him and, for the last two decades of his life, he finished his ‘Nympheas’, a series of 250 oils, all of his precious waterlilies. The works are each now worth over $50 million. Another waterlily achieved fame as a victim of a bold horticultural heist at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 2014. Pygmy Rwandan waterlily (Nymphaea thermarum), the world’s smallest and rarest, was spirited from the gardens by a specialist plant thief who scooped a specimen from the damp soil near the pond in the Princess of Wales Conservatory. A media frenzy ensued with headlines such as ‘Kew-dunnit?’ and ‘When plant obsession turns criminal’, telling the tale of the tiny lily found only on the muddy banks of thermal hot springs in Rwanda, now extinct in the wild, its habitat destroyed. Scotland Yard feared it would be sold on the black market where unethical collectors pay thousands for rare or endangered specimens.

JULIAN ELTINGE The success of legendary (yet, with hindsight, rather tricky) drag performer and actor Julian Eltinge will have you snatching off your lace-front and flinging it in disgust. At one time in his career, Eltinge is thought to have been the world’s highest paid actor. And they say drag doesn’t pay the bills. Born in Boston in 1881, Eltinge was something of a child star before storming the stage as a vaudeville and Broadway performer, working his way up to incredible success. As a drag artist, Eltinge’s didn’t seek to make fun of gendered tropes, but to perform as a woman. In fact, in his earlier career, he was usually billed just as ‘Eltinge’, creating a mystery around his own gender. He was known to de-wig during his second song, shocking the crowd, and toured internationally winning awards and eye-popping ticket sales. Silent film came next, then a career performing in Hollywood, and his own villa in LA – his Xanadu. As femme as he was on stage or screen, real life was another matter. Eltinge was known for his explosive anger, bar brawls and threats towards anyone who questioned his sexuality. (Dorothy Parker described him as ‘ambisextrous’.) Eltinge’s drag career is awe-inspiring – but hard to love. In 1908 he joined a performance troupe and for two years, until 1910, Eltinge appeared on stage primarily in blackface: shocking by today’s standards. Although this short period of Eltinge’s career was years before the Jim Crow segregation laws were unpicked, and attitudes started to shift, he nevertheless benefitted from performing as a racist caricature. Can we still admire a drag queen’s career knowing their past transgressions? Whatever you think of Eltinge, his mainstream success as a performer put drag on a whole new level.

Drag on a whole new level.

A war time Queen, leaving a legacy of theatrical drag. 20

DRAG SYNDROME Meet Drag Syndrome, a collective of British drag artists with Down’s syndrome who have taken the performance world by storm. Starring Lady Franchesca, Horrora Shebang (award-winning filmmaker and actor, Otto Baxter), Gaia Callas and drag king Justin Bond, the troupe have become known for their eye-poppingly energetic, visceral and joyful spirit – and a truckload of sass. Drag Syndrome formed with the help of Culture Device, the British experimental dance company that works with exceptional artists who have DS. In the past few years, Culture Device and their artists have delivered 15 upscale projects from ballet to a dance residency at London’s Royal Opera House. Drag was a new direction and it wasn’t until that first underground performance in March 2018 that artistic director Daniel Vais realised quite how big the troupe was going to be. From their first show, Drag Syndrome have scored rave reviews, feverish media attention – and more than its fair share of trolling from those who find the combination of queer-edged performance and people with DS too mind-blowing to comprehend. But, haters’ gonna hate and, with the troupe performing in venues around the world, appearing at legendary festivals like Glastonbury, and enjoying the kind of packed tour schedule other artists can only dream of, it’s definitely Drag Syndrome who are having the last laugh.

“ Large and in charge, chunky yet funky.”

It’s definitely Drag Syndrome who are having the last laugh.

In the drama all human happiness and misery does and must take the form of action. Otherwise its existence remains unknown.

Just because you write a poem, it doesn’t mean you have to publish it. If I’m just because I happen The ancientwriting Roman poet Horace is considered to be the first person to start in the middle, or in medias res as he put it in his book Ars Poetica. to have had I’m This is a storytelling technique that has its an up-frontidea, exposition bypassed and the story told through references to past events, through flashbacks, completely free to write as the action moves backwards and forwards, in and out of time. Sequencing the action There are many ways in which the action of a story can be sequenced, and we see this in the multiple way basic storylines are used by different authors. There are no restrictions in this, but the beginning-middle-end or set-up-confrontation-resolution of the story structure, in whichever sequence it is used in the narrative, must hold up in the end.

Aquarius

‘Live and let live’ could have been a motto written by Aquarius and, for them, these words lie at the heart of their attitude when it comes to co-habiting. It’s also the attitude they expect from their housemates, which might cause a little friction if you are not on the same page. Aquarius is often away, either working long hours or just travelling for pleasure in some far-flung place. As a result they are used to fending for themselves and getting on with all sorts of different people. The upside to this is that they are generally very tolerant and open to discussion, so household problems are easily aired and solved. When they are around, Aquarians are very social, either spending hours at the kitchen table discussing the ways of the world with their lover or inviting a motley crew over to do the same. Domesticity may be approached in a rather whirlwind way or methodically: Aquarius is too unpredictable to be sure. They may need the occasional prompt, but it will get done because at heart Aquarius does likes a degree of order and organisation.

What colour should you wear on a date with Pisces? As might be expected, the turquoise blue-greens of the ever-changing light and dark of the sea are Pisces’ lucky colours. Wear these colours when you want to connect with Pisces energy. If you don’t want to commit head-to-toe, choose blue or green for accessories – shoes, gloves, socks or even underwear.

Paris Or Die A Memoir Jayne Tuttle February ISBN 9781741176742 £14.99 Paperback 320pp 234 x 153 mm Black & white text

Part rom com, part travel memoir - one woman’s story of losing her heart and her head (almost literally) in Paris Jayne Tuttle is a young Australian in Paris: living in a converted seventeenth-century monastery and studying at a prestigious theatre school, escaping the pain of a loss back home by immersing herself in the city’s extremes. The beauty. The grime. The madness and humour, the sights and songs. A friendship with a flamboyant artist. A relationship with a Frenchman too beautiful to be real. Nothing in her Paris seems to follow rhyme or reason – least of all the bizarre accident that nearly ends it all when she narrowly avoids decapitation in a lift shaft. HOM E M A DE N U T M I LK I can think of a few reasons why making homemade nut milk is better than buying it from the store. First, you can buy just about any kind of nut from bulk bins, which means you can make just about any kind of nut milk without creating waste. Homemade nut milk also tastes better, has fewer ingredients, and can be customized a lot of different ways. If you make nut milk yourself, you have the option of soaking the nuts beforehand. Not only does this soften the nuts and draw out their rich flavors, it also neutralizes their phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors, which makes them easier to digest. Finally if you make nut milk at home, you can use the leftover pulp in a variety of tasty recipes for crackers, hummus, truffles, and more. So before you toss the pulp, be sure to check out the recipes following this one.

Place nuts in a medium-sized bowl and cover with water. Add salt, cover with a cloth, and let soak at room temperature for 8 to 12 hours. After 8 to 12 hours, drain water and rinse the nuts with cool water. Place 1 cup of nuts and 2 cups filtered water in a high-speed blender and blend on high speed until the nuts are broken down into a fine meal and the water is opaque white. Using a nut milk bag or cheesecloth, strain the milk into a large bowl. Squeeze the bag to release excess milk, add honey or maple syrup, to taste, and store in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. H ER BA L FACE WA SH A natural skincare routine begins with a good facial cleanser. This soap-based wash combines herb-infused water, Castile soap, and a moisturizing oil to help remove impurities, makeup, and excess sebum, while soothing skin irritations and reducing fine lines and wrinkles. You can personalize it by adding essential oils that accommodate your particular skin type and needs. As a cleanser, it works best as the first step in your skin care routine, followed by a scrub or mask, then a toner, a serum, and finally some moisturizer.

I NGR E DI E N T S 1 cup herb-infused water 1 cup plain liquid Castile soap

1 tablespoons moisturizing oil (jojoba or sweet almond) 5 drops of essential oils

DI R E C T ION S

Prepare the herb-infused water by adding 1 tablespoon each of dried calendula, chamomile, and lavender to a half pint-size mason jar. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over the herbs and steep for 30 to 45 minutes. Strain the herbs, then combine the herb-infused water, Castile soap, moisturizing oil, and essential oils. Transfer mixture to a (16-ounce) glass bottle, seal tightly, and mix well. To use, apply a small amount of cleanser to wet face and massage into the skin using circular motions, avoiding your eyes. Rinse well with warm water. TIP To prevent contamination, infuse the herbs in distilled water and/or store the final face wash in the refrigerator.
