An insightful, moving memoir, capturing life as a midwife in a busy hospital whilst dealing with infertility and loss.
Sophie Martin and her husband spent years trying to conceive, never quite knowing whether they would one day have a family. Alongside this, Sophie was working as a midwife, her patients’ new additions serving as a constant reminder of Sophie’s own setbacks in pursuit of motherhood.
The Infertile Midwife offers a much-needed look at how society treats infertility – from the language we use to the small talk we make – and the ways we can all make things better for hopeful parents. Sophie shares her experiences of moments of great loss, but also the humour, love and joy found in even the darkest places.
Sophie Martin is a registered midwife and worked in a London hospital for ten years before moving to a hospital in Essex. Every October, Sophie curates a series of online interviews to coincide with Baby Loss Awareness Week, during which she’s spoken with guests such as Elizabeth Day and Izzy Judd. Sophie lives in Essex with her husband and young son.
One in six couples will experience infertility and one in four couples will lose a baby. Infertility affects couples of all ages, races and classes, but is rarely given the attention it deserves A timely discussion, with figures such as Chrissy Teigen and Meghan Markle recently sharing their stories
