Dr. Timothy Maddox Dr. Timothy Maddox, Hardin-Simmons University Professor of Philosophy and Head of the Cynthia Ann Parker College of Liberal Arts Philosophy Department, passed away suddenly on September 6, 2010. In 1977, Dr. Maddox received his bachelor’s degree from Hardin-Simmons University in Bible and religion, with a minor in philosophy. He held two master’s degrees—a Master of Divinity and a Master of Christian Philosophy— and a doctorate in Christian Philosophy from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Maddox returned to Hardin-Simmons in 2004. He had been teaching Critical Thinking, Applied Ethics, and several courses on the History of Philosophy.

Kiefer Holman On March 12, 2011 Kiefer Holman’s canoe capsized in Lake Ray Hubbard. His body was recovered March 16. Holman was a freshman and soccer player at Hardin-Simmons. Holman lived in Nix Residence Hall. Caleb Steed, the dorm director at Nix said, “Kiefer was a great student in the dorm and a very Godly and respectful student. He was always eager to talk about his faith.” Men’s Head Soccer coach Dan Heger said Kiefer is one of those students that is just a great kid. “He was doing some preaching at some of the smaller churches and told me was feeling a calling to study ministry.”

HSU started out the 2010-2011 school year with Greek Week. From August 31 to September 3, special events got new and old students excited about the clubs on campus. Kelsey Evans , Tiffany Hambrick, Alexa Gabaree, Jay Hiller, Bryan Blare, Burr Thornton, and Nathan Blum dominate at volleyball. Courtney Quijas and John Fenn take a turn on the dance floor during the All Greek Dance. Students flood the Baptist Student Ministry Courtyard to dance the night away. Steven Williams, Trey Chavez, Sean Strehlow, and Richard Perez represent Sigma Delta Sigma at the dance. AIO members Alyssa Browning, Sarah Wesley, Erika Chafin, and Nicole Windhagen talk to Sarah Staples, Katie Koch, and Brianna Nisi at the Girls Night.

On Tuesday night, the All Greek Dance was held in the Baptist Student Ministries Courtyard. Wednesday night was Girls Night. A movie was shown while girls snacked and socialized. Tri Phi members, Emily Pafumi, Rebekah Feese, and Chey Hall, make cotton candy at Girls Night. Frances Hewtty, Katrina Jensen, Sarah Morris, Mallory Moser, Shannon Rector, Jenny Davenport, Angela Walker, Lindsi Phipps, and Tracy Hobson watch the Volleyball Tournament from the sideline. The Zeta Chi fraternity is happy to be at the All Greek Dance. Taylor Burroughs spikes the ball hard during the tournament. Sigma Alpha members and Shae Pendley and Meredith Mondoy unite with Tri Phi member Hope Malone during Greek Week.

Thursday night was Guys Night. Barbeque was served on Anderson Lawn, while the guys hung out. Students gather to watch the Volleyball Tournament. Freshmen girls Jessica Stuckey, Danielle Roadcap, Kendall Hoover, and Kelsey Grimm enjoy dancing at the B.S.M. Kylie Davis and Tanya Eichhorst nibble on cotton candy during Girls Night. Sigma Alpha members Kaleigh Greenwood, Natalie Powell, and Sarah Rogers talk to Courtney Biggs, Eileen Wilson, and Mandy Campos about HSU’s Greek clubs. Joy Waldrop welcomes Ahkila Savage and Jennifer Gimbill to Girls Night. Theta Alpha Zeta beau, Lili Muongkhot, loves Greek Week.

To end Greek Week, students competed in a 10 team Volleyball Tournament at HSU’s intramural complex. While some people played, others came to watch and cheer on the teams. Laurin Dodge, Sigma Alpha member, and Michael Nixon, Theta Alpha Zeta member, share a dance. Hands collide during a fierce volleyball match. The Greek Clubs at Hardin-Simmons University line up for a dance. EPiA ladies Maria Olivas, Ellen Weaver, Natalie Galata, Erin Kiger, and Nicole Harbin are proud of their club.

The purpose of the HSU Theatre Department is to lead students to achieve originality, creativity, imagination and perspective with practicality that will enable them to perform all their tasks in the theatre and live with more self-confidence. Our Town is the first theatre performance for the 2010-2011 season. Jeremiah Johnson looks dejected during DIRECTFest. Hope Malone and Treg Hudson share an intimate conversation. Kayla Bender plays Orfeo in the opera Orfeo ed Euridice. Townspeople warm themselves by a fire in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

The Theatre Department had four performances, including Our Town, A Christmas Carol, The Imaginary Invalid, and The Roads to Home, as well as DIRECTFest, where students directed their own plays. Rebekah McGregor gets her hair and makeup done for DIRECTFest. Kelsey Prestidge, Spencer Willams, Andy Garrett, and Jayci Pruitt sing a Christmas carol. Bob Cratchit (Jeremiah Johnson) works at Ebenezer Scrooge’s (Dean Nolen, Assistant Professor of Theatre and Artistic Director) counting house as Fred (Andy Garrett) spreads some Christmas cheer. The Stage Manager (Spencer Williams) marries Emily Webb (Kelsey Prestidge) and George Gibbs (Joe Davis) in Our Town. Orfeo (Kayla Bender) and Euridice (Chelsea Baker) are reunited by Amor (Brittany Baker).

At HSU, life outside the classroom is important. No matter where students’ interests lie, there are always activities going on around campus. Jabob Weckwerth has to talk loudly at the Blacklight Breakdown. Sarah Stansell, Megan Ryan, and Danielle Roadcap eat with HSU President Lanny Hall and his wife, Carol Hall, at the Pancake Study Break. At The Party to Dye For, students tie-dye shirts and make spirit shakers to support the HSU Cowboy football team. Alison Baxter sips coffee at the Spring Pancake Study Break. Dr. Hall sings karaoke with Emily Jasper and Anna Berry.

The possibilities are endless. From social networking and ministry opportunities, to intramural sports and team support, HSU has it all. Freshmen relax by the pool during FreshFest. Students take a break before finals and eat delicious pancakes in the Cafe. Blacklight Breakdown was a hit. Ashton Sikes, Amy Meyer, Sarah Church, and Jacie Frierson roast marshmallows at the S’mores Roast. Students compete in a Ping-Pong tournament where top student contestants play against Dr. Hall and other HSU Vice Presidents.

HSU Student Activities and Behrens Hall hosted the Cowboy Rodeo & Honkey Tonk in September. Rodeo events included goat tying, calf roping, and goat dressing. Afterwards, live music played as students danced. Rodeo clowns Jacob Weckwerth and William Suell keep the goats under control. Dancing in groups is lots of fun. I also learned a lot about self discipline, respect, and that I can push myself far beyond what I thought I could. I have gained valuable, significant friendships that I know I will have forever. I became best friends with some girls who I may not have had the opportunity to do so with, and created true friendships. Hope Malone, Tri Phi
