BELGRAVIA LONDON 2014
Project Value: £3M Size: 407 sqm (4,380 sqf)
Our brief was to create a high spec bespoke contemporary family home in a typical three storey Belgravia townhouse.
The existing unmodernised
property had a typical layout with a warren of small rooms throughout. The clients’ preference was for a pared down modern interior that foregoes all the usual period features - restraint, but highly detailed. Furthermore the property had to feel spacious and generous, with rooms that flow into each other and few internal separations. Even though not listed, this freehold property on the Duke of Westminster’s estate had to abide by strict local planning rules. After consultation with all relevant authorities, it was decided to demolish the entire property, only retaining the street facade. The rear of the property had to be rebuilt to fit in with adjoining properties, but gave the architects the opportunity

to improve the rear of the house and give it a more appealing and architectural presence. The house was further extended by adding a mansard roof as well as a basement floor under the existing garden, adding an additional 2 floors to the existing 3. The demolition also meant that the ceiling heights could be increased throughout, contributing towards the feeling of spaciousness. The clients are keen art collectors, so wanted their home to form a neutral backdrop for their extensive collection of paintings. Due to the contemporary styling favoured by the client, a lot of emphasis was placed on texture and detailing. Patinated bronze, brushed wood, limestone, linen and raw silks were used throughout. This was a complex and complicated project that took four years to realise.

Our brief was to create a boutique ski hotel that offers understated luxury and comfort with a contemporary twist on traditional Swiss chalet style. It should become a destination hotel in the Valais region which people seek out. The aim is for The Capra to become a home away from home with a warm intimate atmosphere where friends and family can reconnect with each other and with nature. The hotel offer a whole host of amenities including a spa with steam room, sauna, a large whirlpool and a state-of-the-art TechnoGym fitness room. La Locanda restaurant by Michelin star chef Oliver Glowig, is offering both a relaxed brasserie style and fine dining. The design for the restaurant had to be in tune with the rest of the hotel. There is also a cosy bar and lounge with the best cocktails and panoramic views across the mountain skyline of Saas-Fee. “Wrapped in fresh timbers, the new contemporary Capra Hotel has all the lovely trappings of a traditional build complete with canted rooftop that blends into the thirteen, 4000 metres snow-capped peaks encasing the rural idyll of SaasFee - known as the Pearl of the Swiss Alps. An all-suite hotel, The Capra has carefully edited the “chalet” look in creating something altogether more subtly elegant with sophisticated earthy palettes of oatmeal, burnt orange and lavishly simple textiles which frame the panoramic mountain views. The feel is timeless - plump soft furnishings and intricate craftsmanship pieces lend an air of muted luxury packed with thoughtful creature comforts. This part of Valais is blessed in almost all-year-round ski and as such equally boosts more than 300 days of Alpine sunshine, little wonder it’s kept pretty much a secret. The Capra Saas-Fee is very much bespoke, geared for the urbanite & modern family seeking the essence of alpine lifestyle with a dapper note and top-end services of a small luxury hotel without the pomp.” Iain Ainsworth White Line Hotels The hotel openened in December 2014. The brief for this large new-build villa on the Greek Island of Paxos was to create a relaxed modern holiday home with lots of entertainment space for large gatherings of friends and family. The client wanted the home to have a ‘quiet’ quality with soft colours, natural materials and textures - ideal for long, hot Mediterranean summers. The location of the property is enviable - a large plot surrounded by pine forest, overlooking the Ionian sea with views towards the island of Corfu and. The most important aspect of the property is the view, so the clients didn’t want anything that detracts from that. Having been involved in the project from the outset allowed us to also have an input on the architecture. The architectural style of the property is very much in keeping with traditional local architecture. The architecture of the Ionian islands are influenced by the Venetians who occupied these islands once upon a time. We also proposed using the same materials that is generally used in construction of properties on the island - combinations of stone and render. Construction commenced in 2013 and is due for completion sometime in 2016.

This project was undertaken during my time with Hugh Leslie’s studio in 2010. This client whom the studio has worked with previously, commissioned the studio to undertake the full refurbishment of the family’s ski chalet in the Swiss Alps. Even though the family had owned the chalet for some time and had many winter holidays there, they never got around to do-ing it up - something that was desperately needed. The clients didn’t want a typical and predictable chalet look, however we couldn’t completely ignore where the property is located and had to pay subtle homage to the location. Fur-thermore the brief stipulated a chic, grown-up townhouse look and feel to act as an unex-pected foil for their collection of art and objects. The client and her family want to enjoy the property and all the varied activities of Arosa all year round and as thus the design should not only be aimed towards winter sport holidays, but should feel just as inviting and com-fortable in summer as it does in the midst of winter.

Project Value : Undisclosed This project was undertaken during my tenure at the studio of John Minshaw. The property is a large circa 1820’s period mansion in the parish of Hever in the Weald of Kent. The clients acquired the property some years ago and had been ‘camping’ in it for some time before commissioning John Minshaw’s studio to undertake the complete refurbishment. They were drawn to the classic minimal interiors that the studio has created in the past and wanted their home to have the same aesthetic. The studio firstly reconfigured the layout, reinstated and refurbished the interior architecture and then moved on to decorate and fur-nish the interiors. The house was featured in the October 2012 edition of The World of Interiors

This 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom penthouse in North London overlooks the Lords cricket ground and boasts expansive views over London. The clients were a young couple of city workers who wanted their home to be somewhere for them to come home to after a long day in the office, crash out and chill out. As the couple would premarily be using their home in the evening and at weekends, they wanted the interior scheme to come alive at night. They wanted the feeling of coming home to a seductive and sultry club lounge - dark, moody and elegant. Surfaces and materials were used that glisten, gleam and reflect in soft and candle light.
