A history of A.SHAK

E

stablished in 1958 to supply concrete release agents to the Construction Industry, A.SHAK (Pty) Ltd quickly became a market leader in this field and by 1968 had added many other products to the range including PLASTERKEY, the original plaster bonding agent and KONKLEEN a hydrochloric acid based masonry cleaner. At this stage the Hardware Industry started to make enquiries about stocking PLASTERKEY and KONKLEEN and so A.SHAK entered the retail market as well. In 1999 DRIKON (Pty) Ltd was bought and added to the basket. DRIKON, which was the only product manufactured by the company, was developed in 1933 as a concrete accelerator for the mining industry. Already popular in the retail sector DRIKON is now used to set concrete in water reservoirs, damp basements, fencing posts and many other applications as DRIKON not only accelerates the setting process but waterproofs the cement/concrete as well. Over the years we have added many quality products like TILELOC which is a waterproofing and bonding additive for tile adhesives and cement, TILEPRIME which is a primer for painting over ceramic tiles and Melamine cupboards, ROOFFIX for repairing broken roof tiles and roof ridges, SPRAYSEAL which is an invisible water repellant sealer for masonry or concrete surfaces and DAMPLOC for the treatment of rising damp, just to name a few. Our innovative SCREWGOO is extremely popular with DIYer’s and Contractors alike. SCREWGOO has changed the way roof screws on IBR and corrugated sheeting are sealed. Supplied in a 1lt sachet with a nozzle, a small squeeze of the product onto the roof screw is all you need and screws are sealed in one easy step with no messy paint brushes and membranes. We also have biodegradable enzyme based products for Septic tanks and Pit toilets which are an inexpensive and environmentally friendly way of taking care of these often-difficult sewerage system problems. Depending on the amount of people using the facility, add one or two sachets a month to maintain the viability of the system. We will be adding further products to this BIOSPLASH range in the very near future so keep an eye out for those. Of course, our ever popular LIQUIDRAIN drain cleaner is still available but please handle this product with care.

page 4 | Hardware Edition 2018

For LIQUIDRAIN to be effective in clearing badly clogged drains which are usually blocked by kitchen fat, hair and toilet paper, it needs to be a very strong chemical. Sulphuric acid is the active ingredient in LIQUIDRAIN which makes it such an effective product. Our Deccare WOODSEAL and Deccare WOODOIL ranges are gaining in market popularity. These are high quality treatments for a variety of wood types both for indoor and outdoor applications. We have a large range of colour choices and clear sealers to suit the customers individual styles and are well priced for affordability. We have recently launched a small range of products for the Plumbers to use. A PVC High Pressure weld and PVC Low Pressure weld, welding Flux and a wax toilet outlet ring make up this range. Being totally South African manufactured our quality and pricing makes this a highly competitive range for Hardware store owners to stock. We are very excited about entering this sector of the market and will definitely be looking at extending this range in the future. Of course, PLASTERKEY remains our flagship retail product. Many have tried to imitate it and many have tried to compete with it in the market place. The DIY customers and contractors alike remain loyal to this quality bonding agent and therefore we will continue to guarantee that our PLASTERKEY will always be the best on shelf or on site. A.SHAK as a Company has evolved over the 60 years of its existence and we will continue to do so in the future. We have some exciting new products which will be making an appearance shortly and we hope the Hardware Industry as well as their customers will be as excited as we are and look forward to a successful 2018 for our industry.

S

ika is a global leader in the innovation and production of high performance adhesives used in the construction industry and offers a range of products that deliver targeted results for the homeowner’s diverse needs. Bonding falls into three distinct categories: 1. Elastic Bonding is required when the two surfaces to be bonded will be exposed to high stress or movements. Elastic bonding accommodates movement between similar and variable materials while absorbing vibration and resisting impact. It reduces noise transmission, resists thermal deformation and prevents deformation or damage to the substrates being bonded.

If you have a multipurpose bonding and sealing application Sikaflex® is the choice of professionals worldwide. • Sikaflex-11FC+ is a fast curing joint sealant and multipurpose adhesive, ideal for sealing in metal and wood construction and ventilation construction.

Sikaflex® Crystal Clear

• Sikaflex Crystal Clear is a transparent adhesive and sealant that can be used on most surfaces including metal, glass, concrete, plaster, wood, painted enamel, polyester and plastics.

• Multipurpose adhesive • Indoor joint sealant between partition walls

• Sikaflex High Tack is suitable for bonding most construction materials over different surfaces, even on damp concrete. Use it for bonding wood boards, mouldings, panel bonding, ceramic tiles or roof tiles to bricks, stones, ceramics, various metals, concrete, hard PVC, timber and many other surfaces.

Sikadur®-AP • • • • •

2. Semi-elastic Bonding is for jobs that require a robust adhesive that will cure without additional fixing, giving you the freedom to walk away with confidence that the object will stay in place. This adhesive is convenient, safe and efficient. • Sika MaxTack is a water-based high-strength grab adhesive for bonding building materials indoors and in sheltered outdoor areas. It has strong adhesion on porous materials such as concrete, mortar, cement, wood and painted substrates.

Sika Anchorfix®-S • Bolts & special fastening systems • Threaded rods • Rebars, reinforcing steel • Hollow & solid blocks

3. Rigid Bonding is needed when connecting the same or different substrates together which have to transmit static and dynamic loads throughout the life cycle. The benefits of rigid adhesives are unique stress distribution and no attack of the structural integrity. • Sikadur-AP is an all-purpose epoxy adhesive paste that is used for general bonding and patching of a wide variety of materials. It can be applied to damp surfaces and is ideal for vertical and overhead applications. For more information on Sika products and systems, visit: www.sika.co.za

BRUSHWARE

Choosing the right brush

T

o choose the right brush you need to consider the paint you’ll be using, the cost and the finish you want.

Paint Choice If you’re using latex paint you’ll need synthetic bristles, but if you’re using oil-based paint or a varnish, spend the extra money to get a good quality natural bristle brush.

What type of brush to use with acrylic paint? When buying brushes for acrylic painting, you can get both the stiff bristle brushes used by oil painters and synthetic brushes made for smooth watercolour painting. It all depends on the effect you want to obtain with your brushwork. Stiffer brushes will leave visible marks on the painting, with more textural results.

Types of Brushes Natural-bristle brushes made with animal hairs are used for applying oil base paints, varnishes, shellac, polyurethane and other oil base finishes. The natural “flagging” (splitting or fuzzy tips) of these brushes creates split ends in the bristles that hold more paint and help assure a smooth paint release and finish.

page 8 | Hardware Edition 2018

Blended nylon/polyester brushes are easy to clean and work well with all types of latex paints. The combination of nylon’s durability and polyester’s shape retention is the mark of a high-quality brush - one that also produces a high-quality paint finish. What’s more, these durable brushes are built to handle numerous projects. So, with proper care, nylon / polyester brushes should last for years. Polyester brushes are best for latex paints. These brushes hold their shape and stiffness in any paint and apply paint smoothly and evenly.

Brush Sizes 2mm-25mm – window and other small trim 38mm-75mm – glossy paints for doors and cabinets 100mm-150mm – large, flat areas

BRUSHWARE Brush End Types Chisel Trim Brush - slanted bristles produce a good, straight line for trimming in corners and edges. Square Trim Brush - the ends of the bristles are cut square and used primarily for applying paint over flat areas. Angled Brush - bristles are cut on a slope to make it easier to apply paint to window trim or unusual angles.

Angle Sash - features slanted bristles and holds more paint than its thin counterpart. Excellent for cutting in at the ceiling or painting trim. Flat Sash - bristles are straight across and used primarily for applying paint over flat areas. Trim - a flat brush excellent for painting large flat surfaces, especially exterior siding. Wall - a thick flat brush that holds a larger amount of paint. Excellent for painting larger surface areas.

Brush Styles Thin Angle Sash - slanted bristles and a thin profile produce a good, straight line for trimming in corners and edges.

Caring for and cleaning paintbrushes I t is very important to thoroughly clean brushes after use and between changes of colour. The solution to use will depend on the type of paint. Most manufacturers will recommend a good cleaning solution. For water-based paints such as acrylics then water may be sufficient but a proprietary thinner cleaner or water/alcohol mix may get better results. For oil-based paints, white spirit or turpentine works well although some people use paraffin/ kerosene or other spirits.

There is a way to achieve a perfect finish: Before you start your painting project, prep the brushes for use. If you are using water-based paints, dip the brush in water before dipping into the paint. For oil-based or enamel paints, dip the brush into lacquer thinners. This helps to slow down the drying process of the paint on the brush and prevents paint from drying quickly on the bristles. Be sure to allow any excess water or thinners to drip off the brush before using. Always have a damp cloth handy when painting with water-based paints. When you need to take a break, wrap the paintbrush in the cloth, however when using

oil-based or enamel paints, wrap the brush in cling film. This ensures that the paint on the brush stays fresh until you return. If you need to cover a roller tray, put it inside a plastic grocery bag. Note: Never leave brushes for longer than two hours. Water-based: To clean paintbrushes; rinse them under warm water to wash away paint on the outside of the bristles. Fill a can or container with warm water and dishwashing detergent. Dip in the brush and rapidly move it back and forth without scraping the bristles on the bottom. This should remove the majority of paint on the brush. Any remaining paint can be removed by rinsing again in warm water. Oil-based: To clean paintbrushes, have two jars handy. Fill both with lacquer thinners. Move the brush backwards and forwards for two minutes in the first jaw and then put the brush into the second jar and do the same. Screw the lids on tightly and store in a safe place until you need again. When the thinners in jar one becomes too dirty, replace with new solvent. Don’t pour solvents or paints down the drain. Dry your brushes by hanging them up and allowing the water to drip off.

CAR CARE

Understanding additives

Y

our car is usually the second biggest investment you make after your home, and its engine must endure a lot during its lifetime – wear, contamination, heat, leaks etc... so, it goes without saying that maintaining the engine is essential to ensure it has a long life and performs as it should.

What are additives: Additives are chemical ingredients in oil, fuel and coolant that prevent contamination and solve problems associated with these essential fluids on which your car operates. These may include detergents, dispersants, viscosity improvers, anti-corrosives, anti-wear and friction modifiers among many others. They are by no means foreign to the engine but already form part of many commercial oils, fuels and coolants on the market today which raises the question… why do we need aftermarket additives? Well as your car ages common problems arise which require intervention outside the usual maintenance regime e.g. clogged injectors, blocked soot filter, high exhaust emissions, poor engine performance, excessive fuel consumption, leaks, and even bad smells, all of which

page 12 | Hardware Edition 2018

can easily be solved or prevented by using additional “vitamins” or additives specially formulated to deal with these very issues. It’s not because the oils, fuels or coolants we choose are necessarily of poor quality, but rather due to various conditions the engine is exposed to over time and often not designed for such as stop start city driving where the engine rarely reaches optimal temperature, or immanent wear and tear leading to leaks and contamination. Additives can offer an alternative to many costly mechanical repairs saving you a lot of money.

Ten good reasons to consider using additives in your vehicle: 1. Restore lost engine performance 2. Prevent fast degradation and ageing 3. Protect and lubricate parts 4. Reduce harmful exhaust emissions 5. Prevent or reduce high consumption 6. Clean systems fouled by impurities 7. Prevent fouling of engine parts 8. Prevent seasonal problems 9. Stop leaks 10. Solve bad smell problems

ELECTRICAL

SANS 164 standard

O

f the many thousands of standards published by STANSA, SANS 164 must be one of the most scrutinised and one which we’re in daily contact. It is the South African plugs and socket outlet standard for use in households, offices and commercial buildings.

Configurations

The National Standards for Plugs and Socket Outlets consists of a set of eight standards, adhering to the internationally accepted IEC 60884-1: Plugs and socket outlets for household and similar purposes.

The general requirements link the entire 164 series to the 60884-1 document. It deals with several characteristics, common throughout the series, such as:

Here is a brief summary of these standards with some background, what they cover and their application in our electrical installations.

SANS 60884-1: Plugs and socket outlets for household and similar purposes – part 1: General rules. This standard sets out all the electrical and physical requirements for plugs and socket outlets, but does not specify the shape and configuration of the product. This differs from country to country around the world – over 50 variations of contact configurations and entry designs, all of which are summarised in IEC 60083. Most countries have at least two: an earthed system – 3 pins (for class 1 equipment) and an unearthed system – 2 pins (for class 2 equipment). A further variation is in the operating voltage, so there are both 110 V (125 V) and 220 V (250 V) systems, and even systems for extra lowvoltage below 50 V. To cater for the detailed description of the plug and socket, each country has established standard sheets that define the configuration of contacts, outer shape and dimensions. However, irrespective of the standard sheets, all common characteristics comply with IEC 60884. South Africa adopted IEC 60884 in 1994 and has chosen to publish its data sheets in the SANS 164-X series of documents, describing a family of nine configurations.

SANS 164-0: Plugs and socket outlets for household and similar purposes for use in South Africa – part 0: General, and safety requirements.

• Sockets are to be of the increased protection type, i.e. they must be fitted with safety shutters. • There is a clause dealing with surge protection.

SANS 164-1: Plugs and socket outlets for household and similar purposes for use in South Africa – part 1: Conventional system, 16 A 250 V AC. The most common plug and socket in use in South Africa originated from the old British system BS 546, with some small differences in pin lengths. It has been in use for the past 80 years, metricated in 1953 and revised in 1980. Britain replaced this standard with the flat pin fused plug BS1363 in 1947. With the adoption of IEC 60884, one of the most significant changes is the permissible use of hollow pins.

SANS 164-2: Plugs and socket outlets for household and similar purposes for use in South Africa – part 2: IEC System, 16 A 250 V AC. In the 1980s, South Africa decided to introduce the IEC worldwide plug and socket system, based on IEC 60906:1986, which had been under development by the international community since 1966. Arguably the safest system in the world, the socket outlet is used in South Africa because it accommodates cell phone chargers and two-pin Europlugs fitted to small power devices such as hair dryers etc. The main feature of its design is that the socket is shuttered and has a 12 mm pocket which makes it impossible to touch a live pin during plug insertion. SANS 164-2 also caters for a 16 A, two-pin system that is extensively used in adaptors and is intended for Class II appliances and power tools. The standard allows the connection of an unearthed plug into an earthed socket but not vice versa. It is dangerous when an appliance that requires a protective earth is unearthed – under fault conditions, this could cause a fire or electrocution.

SANS 164-3: Plugs and socket outlets for household and similar purposes for use in South Africa – part 3: Conventional System, 6 A 250 V AC. The 6 A plug and socket has also been in use for the past 80 years, now used extensively for the connection of luminaires, in its non-rewireable form. The 6 A, two-pin version was dropped five years ago, together with the two-pin flat faced socket that was commonly found on adaptors. As plug circuits are rated at 16 A and protected by a 20 A circuit breaker, this system fell out of favour for fixed installations.

SANS 164-4: Plugs and socket outlets for household and similar purposes for use in South Africa –part 4: Dedicated System, 6 A 250 V AC. Dedicated systems are used for the connection of equipment such as computers to special power supplies that have uninterruptible or clean power characteristics, either from a special transformer or a battery/inverter system that takes over in the case of a power failure. This system was patented by a South African manufacturer and its use was authorised in terms of RCC certificates. In 2006 the national standard was published for the first time. The dedicated earth pin has three possible types, determined by the rotational position of the flat portion: i.e –53° = Black, 0° = Red +53° = Blue. Colour nomenclature is also an integral requirement. The main advantage of this system is that the dedicated plugs cannot be interchanged (within the dedicated configurations) but may be inserted into the standard (non-dedicated) system – SANS 164-1. SANS 164-4: Blue +53°SANS 164-5: Plugs and socket outlets for household and similar purposes for use in South Africa – part 5: Twopole, non-rewireable plugs, 2,5 A 250 V AC, with cord, for connection of class II equipment.

A 2,5 A plug of the Europlug design has smaller diameter contact pins than those in the 16 A (SANS 164-2) version and is extensively used in cell phone chargers. It is compatible with SANS 164-2 and SANS 164-6; both standards make provision for contact integrity between the two pin sizes. However because of the compatibility of plugs of a higher current rating, a 2,5 A socket has not been allowed for obvious reasons. SANS 164-6: Plugs and socket outlets for household and similar purposes for use in South Africa – part 6: Twopole systems, 16 A 250 V AC, for connection of class II equipment. The Schuko system, which is common to many European countries, has been the subject of many heated debates to the point where the minister published a mandatory prohibition on the use of the earthed plug (VC8008: 1994). The main reason lies in the fact that many unearthed two-pin adaptors will accommodate an earthed plug, with potentially dangerous consequences. A two-pin (earthed and unearthed) socket is allowed in adaptors and also in fixed installations. The standard is taken from CEE 7/17 and the use of this plug is limited to a non-rewireable type.

The future? There are many who complain that we have far too many configurations in our relatively small country. Why not standardise on the British or German system, or Australia for that matter? The answer to this is not a simple one and although fragmented, here are some salient points: • Our engineering founding fathers drew heavily from British standards, whose influence was common to many aspects of our society (legal system, education etc); some for the better, others less so. • Some degree of protection for the electrical manufacturing industry was established, by unique configurations, and is still common in many countries today. • To change an established plug and socket outlet system is costly, takes a long time and its benefits are difficult to quantify. This has been proven in many countries, mainly in Europe, which has recently rejected the adoption of the IEC 60906 standard as a common system for the EU. • South Africa has not been able to prevent the influx of other systems such as the Europlug and Schuko. These systems are used extensively in power tools, TV and entertainment products, computers and cell phone chargers. The cost of enforcing SANS 164-1 on the manufacturers of these products, for a market as small as ours by international standards, would be extremely high and simply unlikely to materialise.

page 16 | Hardware Edition 2018

• All plug and socket systems from anywhere in the world are safe if used in isolation. However, when systems are mixed some very dangerous combinations are possible. Therefore it is important to exercise caution in selecting systems that can be used safely together. Since 1994 we have enjoyed a steady growth in tourism, and are expecting unprecedented numbers in 2010 during the Soccer world cup. We now have a plug and socket outlet system that will safely cater for a large number of the 250 V countries. In conclusion, our installation protection is based on a low resistance earth conductor distributed throughout the installation, an earthed neutral at the incomer and sensitive earth leakage protection for the socket outlets and as much of the installation as possible, our plug and socket outlet standards reflect this ethic to our benefit and safety.

FASTENERS

Product knowledge – fasteners Antique style nAil Available with a variety of different shanks and heads for restoring old furniture and attaching antique hinges. BoAt nAil A ringed or annular fastener made of rust-resistant metal. ideal for outdoor use where a strong rust free bond is needed.

timber has to be fixed to brickwork or to concrete surfaces and provides a very good grip.

DRyWAll NAIl Has a sharp point and a broad head for installing wall board partitions in ceilings and other areas under pressure. use the ringed type, which has more holding power.

Clout nAils Clout nails can be used as a general purpose fastener where a nail with a large head is required. it is mainly used for fixing of ceiling boards and slate tiles. Generally galvanized to prevent rusting. Common nAil A heavy duty fastener with a flat head that won’t pull through the work, is used in carpentry and roof framing. The box nail a lighter version of the common nail, is used in thin wood to keep it from splitting.

esCutCHeon nAil used for attaching keyhole plates and other back plates, or escutcheons.

CONVEX HEAD ROOFING SCREWS Convex head roofing screws are made of low carbon mild steel rod wire and are used for the fixing of corrugated and iBR roof sheeting as well as asbestos to roof trusses. it can be used in any application where high withdrawal forces are required and where a timber beam is used as the anchor post. The roofing screws are fitted with a selfsealing washer which makes it ideal for watertight roofing connections.

GAlVANISED BARBED STAPlE similar to a staple but the shafts have hooks for additional resistance.

CuT FlOORING NAIl / STEEl CuT Cut steel nails are identified by their flat shape and are made of hot rolled W200 wearplate. It is used for the fixing of timer skirting to brick and concrete walls as well as to fix floorboards. They are also referred to a ‘cut flooring nails’ and ‘steel cut nails’. Due to the flat shape of the nail very little damage is caused to the fibres of the timber when the nail is driven through the timber. The flat shape of the nail runs parallel with the grain of the fibres of the timber, which make it very unlikely that these nails will split the wood. it can be used in any application where

FINISHING NAIl is a thin small headed nail for cabinet making and attaching trim. the nailhead is usually driven below the surface and filled over. GAlVANISED BAlE FASTENER the bale fastener is used to assist with fastening of bales.

GAlVANISED FluTED NAIlS Fluted nails are made of high carbon and bolt steel and are exclusively used as round masonry nails. They are identified by embossed lines, which are rolled onto the shank of the nail. these embossed lines run along the length of the shank and help to improve the holding resistance of the nail. GAlVANISED NAIl Coated with zinc to prevent rusting. ideal for usages where exposure to weather conditions are a factor, as on decks or patios. GAlVANISED ROOFING SCREWS Despite its name, it is a nail. With a rain-excluding washer under its domed head, the spiral shaft is driven by the hammer through roofing material such as corrugated iron and into the rafter beneath.

GALVANISED STAPLES Quick anchorage for wire fencing. MASoNry NAIL Made of hardened steel that resists bending. This nail is used mostly for temporarily holding strips to concrete or masonry walls. The shank may be plain, or it may be fluted to help the nail grip more tightly. For a more permanent construction, screws and wall plugs are preferred. MouLDING NAILS Similar to the wire brad, is used to attach moulding. Generally the heads of these nails are countersunk and filled. PANELLING NAIL A hard thin nail often ribbed, is ideal for securing panelling to wall plugs. It is sometimes obtainable in different colours to match the panelling material.

rING uNDErLAy or ANNuLAr NAIL Has a shank that is ringed with deep, closely spaced grooves. The wood fibres wedge themselves into these grooves, resulting in maximum holding power in soft or medium woods. Ideal for use in the installation of subflooring because the holding power keeps the sub-flooring from squeaking or pulling loose. SpiRal FluTed FlooRing nail Turns like a screw when driven in, gripping tightly to eliminate squeaking. WIrE BrAD a small finishing nail that is used for fine work. it is frequently driven below the surface of the work with a punch, and the hole above filled in. WIrE NAIL A small usually soft version of a common nail and is perfect for light jobs.

nsects and rodents can cause a lot of damage to your plants, crops and even invade homes. In most cases it’s better to use a natural remedy if possible. APHIDS Aphids like to feed on tomatoes, cabbage, peas, potatoes, roses, trees and shrubs. When your garden becomes under attach, your plants will stop growing, the leaves will wilt and branches may become dry and curled, yellowed or downward cupped leaves. TIP: Try introducing ladybirds, birds, wasps and spiders into your garden. Especially ladybirds. Aphids are attracted to yellow. Take a yellow card and smear with Vaseline and place in affected areas. CUTWORM Cutworm feed on young seedlings and slice the base of the stems. TIP: Sprinkle mealie meal around the base of the plants. Crushed eggshells are also a deterrent for cutworm as well as snails. SNAILS Signs are usually holes eaten from leaves and slime trails around the plant. Snails love young plants and leaves. TIP: Pick them off by hand, but this needs to be at night when they are feeding. Pot plants need a Vaseline seal smeared around the rim.

Handy tip:

Mix one or two tablespoons of liquid soap with a litre of water and spray on plants. Soap disrupts the insect’s cell membrane causing dehydration. Apply during the early morning or late afternoon. This avoids the product being exposed to the sun and making it less effective.

Hydroponics – a possible solution to South Africa’s agricultural water crisis?

A

s long ago as 1950 in one of my early geography lessons, I learned that South Africa was a ‘dry’ country without too much rainfall, heavily dependent upon dams, reservoirs and artificial irrigation to survive. Since that date many hundreds of concrete dams were constructed all over the country to alleviate our dependence on this precious resource, water. However, since then a dramatic new phenomenon has entered the world geography scenario, that of global warming, or as it has recently been more correctly called, climate change. Climate change is having a marked effect on countries the world over, with dry or poorly irrigated lands suffering even further from lack of water, and countries with more than adequate water resources being inundated. The ice caps’ melting is further exacerbating the situation by raising sea levels. Higher sea levels of warmer water worsen the situation even further. Anthony Turton, a world acclaimed water and energy specialist, was dismissed from his position at the CSIR some years ago, when he was on the point of presenting a paper revealing just how acute South Africa’s own water position is, and is going to be. Perhaps this was a quotable case of ‘killing the messenger who brings the bad news’ but the fact that he wasn’t able to present the paper and reveal to the public the gravity of our situation reflects negatively and sadly on our ability to face reality and do something about it. Most of us continue unaware that our water situation is indeed dire and many farmers are wondering, hoping that the government will come to their aid and supply them with water because they ‘feed the nation’ and the nation cannot go without food. This is borne out on an almost daily basis with farmers nationally complaining of drought. In Camperdown, KZN, recently, farmers were on the point of losing their crops due to drought when the welcoming late rains arrived and this is happening increasingly all over the country. The problem with climate change, where it reduces the annual rainfall in an already dry country, is that all the dam building that one may construct will not alter by a single drop, the amount of water that falls (or rather doesn’t fall) from the sky. The municipality of Sedgefield, in recognition of things to come, has already installed a complete reverse osmosis salt-water purification plant that supplies their user grid with drinking water. This leads me to the main topic. Agriculture uses vast amounts of water for overhead irrigation, all of which (other than the small amount that the plants soak up) is lost to the water table irretrievably. Farmers who have page 26 | Hardware Edition 2018

By John Sandison, Hydroponic Grower dams and rivers that don’t dry up can use vast amounts of water to this end with relatively little penalty, but sooner or later when the effects of climate change dry up the rivers and dams what will they then do? By that stage it will be too late to take any action that will provide an immediate solution to the problem, and the government will not be sympathetic to trucking in large quantities of water for agriculture when other sectors of the community still don’t have any for drinking. A possible solution for fruit and vegetable farmers would be to look now at alternative ways of growing produce that is cost-effective and less wasteful of precious water. One of those ways is hydroponics. Hydroponics is a blend of chemical engineering and agriculture and consists of growing plants (with or without a medium) in a solution of water-soluble nutrients. The most popular methods in South Africa are: 1) The gravel bed system, where plants are grown in a medium of gravel chips in a long bed lined with plastic to prevent the water from seeping away. Nutrient feeding must be constant as the stones have little capacity for retaining moisture. This is a reliable system but occupies 6 times more space than say, a vertical system. 2) The grow bag system, where plants are grown in bags filled with a medium of composted pine bark, or sawdust, wood-shavings or coir peat. This is also a reliable system provided careful monitoring of the feed times and plants’ moisture and food requirements are taken into account. This is best done with an electronic measuring and dosing system (obtainable locally). One of the disadvantages is that it takes up a lot of space but it can accommodate large plants. 3) The vertical growing system, where plants are placed in pots that stack into one another vertically. The pots are filled with a medium such as composted pine bark and water content monitored with an electronic device. There are many advantages of this system over the others such as: • Save land requirements by fitting more plants per square metre than any other system • Save fuel, tractor and labour costs by not having to till and prepare the ground • Save fertiliser and lime costs by not having to condition the ground • Save nutrient and water by re-circulating water systems

• Save labour costs by easier, faster picking at comfortable levels • Save labour costs through a lower incidence of weeding • Save capital costs by using the pots over and over • Save spraying costs due to lower incidence of pests & diseases • Save plastic cover and tunnel costs by using Verti-Gro outdoors • Increase yields by less fruit culling and greater production of perfect fruit • Higher yields due to lower incidence of pest and diseases As can be seen from the above there are many savings to be had with a vertical system, but lets look at water saving especially. My system uses about 1000 litres per 30 000 plants per feed, but that can vary because the transpiration rate varies in accordance with the temperature and the humidity. (1600 drippers @ 2 litres per hour for 30 minutes = 1600 litres of which more than half is returned for re-use). So an average of five feeds per day would consume The pictures show lettuce and strawberries in a vertical system. 5000 litres. On the assumption that 60 000 plants 7 200 plants can be accommodated in a single 8 x 30m space. occupy 1 hectare, the system uses the equivalent of 10 000 litres, whereas watering 1 hectare of effective course is available on a monthly basis in KZN, plants for 15 minutes per day in the open field, used (from that teaches prospective growers how to grow successfully experience) 30 000 litres of water per day all of which is with hydroponics and how to generate another income lost to the water table. stream. This last fact is very important for all farmers For farmers using their own rivers, dams and boreholes because they can start with a small piece of land now and this wastage is bad enough but when paying for water from develop another source of income without waiting for water Municipalities where no allowance is made for agriculture sources to dry up completely. Don’t wait until your water the cost (to market gardeners for example) is crippling. sources have dried up - act now while the going is still Where water is in short supply from natural sources relatively good and prepare for the drier times to come. It’s farmers run the risk of being dried up out of business. just like storing up feed in summer for the leaner winter. So as a rule of thumb we can assume that a re-circulating hydroponic system will use approximately one third of the water used in the open field (all other things being equal). The main advantage with hydroponics is for fruit and vegetable farmers where items like lettuce, spinach, herbs, strawberries, celery, tomatoes, brinjals, capsicums, pineapples (and many other plants) can be grown. Where fruit grows on trees and crops extend over vast areas, such as sugar cane, science has not yet invented a system where these crops can be accommodated hydroponically.

Learning how to do hydroponics: Hydroponics is not rocket science and can be mastered relatively easily especially by anyone already involved in horticulture or agriculture. If you already know how a plant grows and what action to take to eliminate pests and diseases you are already halfway there. A two-day cost

What You Need in Order to Grow with Hydroponics: You’ll need a source of pure water (not brackish or salt laden and have it analysed before you begin) and some flattish land. (Slightly sloping northwards is best). Then, electricity to drive the pumps, and the various accessories required depending on which system you choose. You do not require expensive tunnels and can erect a growing area with gum poles and shade cloth, provided the structure is well anchored against high winds. These more cost-effective structures are about one-tenth the cost of tunnels and puts hydroponics within the reach of every farmer. If you decide to grow vertically you’ll need one-sixth of the land to grow the same number of plants compared with normal agriculture. For further information contact: John Sandison 083 690 2503

GENERAL HARDWARE

Great service at Brights Hardware Store Brights Hardware Store launch drive-thru Q&A session with Orlando Luis, Chief Executive Officer & Technical Director When did you launch your first store and why? It was started by my father in 1971 as an electrical repair and general dealer store. He was an electrical engineer from Portugal and came to South Africa in the sixties to work at the new Caltex refinery that was being built in Milnerton at that time. Did you come from a Hardware background? My father taught me everything he knew about the business from a young age. I also studied 4 years electrical engineering at Cape Technicon from 1988. How many stores do you have currently? Eight stores all in the Western Cape and we employ 800 staff members. What are the sizes of your stores? The oldest store in Boston was only 250 squares in 1971, now 2500 squares store and 500 squares yard.

The largest store is in Blackheath, now 5000 squares store and 5000 squares yard in 2009.

The second store built 1995 was Stikland, now 3000 squares store, 5000 squares yard, 500 squares Admin.

The next franchise store was 2011 in Uitzicht, Durbanville,1500 squares Then the next franchise store was in 2012 in Langebaan, now 3000 squares 1000 squares yard in a shopping centre. The next franchise store is in Montague park, 4000 squares store and 2000 squares yard, opened 2013. Lastly, opened two weeks ago, 2017, a group store Mitchells Plain, 4000 squares store, 2000 sq yard.

Stikland store, built in 1995

The first franchise store is Plattekoof 1500 squares store 500 squares yard opened 2006 in a shopping centre.

You recently came up with the idea of a drivethru hardware merchant – What was the rationale behind this? The idea was implemented in 2004 after listening to our building trade customers concerns of loss of time in obtaining their building materials from hardware stores, struggling to find parking, standing in lines to pay and then

Now everything can be done in the comfort and convenience of your vehicle and it provides an opportunity for a disabled consumer to be served without having to leave their vehicle too. You run a loyalty program – when was this introduced and how many card holders do you currently have? We started in 2004 with a Cash discount loyalty card with (Discount and points), then added a Trade Discount card (better discount and points) an then a Wholesale card (Best price for business and developers in the industry so they can resell). The total card holders is about 130 000. This year we started a female ‘Sparkle’ Card with discount, points and added benefits for woman. To be influenced more towards Hardware. We have about 20000 females at present and want to expand that in the next 5 years. Are you intending opening new stores? We just opened number 8 now and constructed a 6000 square metre Distribution Centre 3 months ago, so we will consolidate first this year coming and will consider more options in the southern suburbs in the future Would you consider franchising Brights? Four of the existing stores are franchised already but only to a combination of group Directors and Staff members that share the same values and standards that our company strives to adhere to. It is not about quantity but consistent quality that we want to maintain. We will not leave the Western Cape but will influence national consumers via our On-line shop and other independent hardware stores via our wholesale out of Distribution Centre options. We want to be the Big Brother of any small to Medium independent Hardware store that needs assistance in the tough trading conditions we have in the industry.

What has been your biggest challenges? Being a family business, finance for expansion is limited and must be carefully managed. Also human resource development training for 800 people takes time especially in a technical industry with over 50000 different products variety and with new technologies , it is forever evolving and we have to find solutions early to be competitive. How do you attract customers, i.e. merchandising, specials, newsletters etc? Firstly Service, because price and availability can be matched by oppositions but not 47 years of technical abilities and family orientated customer care and then of course over 50000 product range under roof and the ability to source any product via special order makes us the ultimate solutions provider. We provide ECO friendly, POWER and WATER saving solutions to the industry. Lately from about 5 years ago we made changes to our stores mechandising and appearance with better shelving, improved shopping environments that makes the stores more inviting to female consumers. We advertise via social media, websites , on-line shop , electronic Mailers , batch SMS And various radio stations and paper pamphlets and catalogues we distribute 600 000 copies throughout the Western cape.

GREEN BUILDING

South African home buyers appreciate value of green homes

Courtesy Green Building Council South Africa

S

outh Africa’s residential sector is embracing green. This is according to Sandra Gordon, senior research and market analyst at Pam Golding Properties. Speaking at the Green Building Council South Africa’s (GBCSA) 10th annual Green Building Convention 2017 conference, held at Century City in Cape Town in October, Gordon explained the current trends that will ensure the growth of green building in the residential property sector.

Is existing housing stock turning green? During the past year most sales were of existing homes rather than new housing units, Gordon notes, who cited Gumtree Head of Property Barrie Swart’s comments that the inclusion of green features means that homes are sold or rented more quickly. Keyword searches for ‘borehole water’ and ‘eco estate’ steadily rose on Gumtree during 2016, and by last November more than a thousand properties were promoted as eco-friendly, sustainable or eco-sensitive – double the number in previous years. While Gumtree does not believe that green features affect the price of the property, most Pam Golding Properties agents surveyed agree that green features do in fact result in a price premium being achieved for a home.

Trends turning the residential market green

The jobs, services and opportunities of the city attract young people, forcing it to densify while becoming proportionally younger. Concurrently, as less convenient land remains under utilised and values appreciate, the expected trend is for price-sensitive buyers to move into sectional title property schemes, explained Gordon.

Sandra Gordon, senior research and market analyst, Pam Golding Properties

• Older, more affluent buyers also favour apartments The security of well-located apartments, and the appeal of down scaling draws older buyers. Travelling for work and family, and the increased rates and utilities costs associated with managing a home mean a growing trend towards smaller, if not necessarily less expensive, properties for older buyers. “More affluent residents are moving from freehold properties to luxury apartments, often in the same area. This is certainly the case along the Atlantic Seaboard,” Gordon said.

• Traffic congestion means people are gravitating towards growth nodes

“The service delivery and energy and water security offered by green precinct developments, along with the competitive pricing of sectional-title properties, are increasingly attractive to first-time buyers,” Gordon noted.

With both first-time and other buyers opting for apartments, metros are becoming increasingly congested - a trend aggravated by prevalent car ownership of the emerging middle class and the deterioration in some forms of public transport. Cape Town is currently SA’s most congested city and Johannesburg’s peak traffic period is extending by 15 minutes each year, and this long, crowded commute may become more expensive as the likelihood that petrol may soon be subject to VAT, Gordon noted.

Two-thirds of South Africa’s population is younger than 34 years – the typical age of the first-time buyer – and, with almost half of all ooba new mortgages awarded to firsttime buyers each year, the demand from young buyers in urban areas is expected to continue. Limited land in major metros will keep sectional title properties popular.

In reaction, home buyers often vote with their pockets and relocate to a growth node, such as Cape Town’s Century City where they can live, work and play on one estate, or near a new transport corridor – new suburbs are opened when MyCiTi or Gautrain routes are extended, said Gordon.

• First-time buyers: young and cash-strapped Gordon said that the transition to green building practices in the local residential market is encouraged by young first-time buyers who, with limited spending power, appreciate the value offered by green homes.

GREEN BUILDING Fourleaf Estate in Port Elizabeth became Africa’s first residential development to receive EDGE final certification by the GBCSA in May this year.

• Green precincts bridge commercial and residential markets Currently, most available housing is freehold, but a growing demand for sectional title is outstripping available stock, and this demand is reflected in the proportion of building plan submissions for sectional-title units. New developments in major growth nodes are increasingly mixed-use and include retail, office, residential and sometimes hospitality. This can be seen in Harbour Arch and Century City in Cape Town, Melrose Arch and Sandton Gate in Johannesburg, Menlyn Maine in Pretoria and along the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. As mixed-use developments gain traction with buyers, green design is extending beyond buildings into the public realm, with the creation of green precincts. “In this way, South Africa’s lead in green building in the commercial sector is impacting positively on the new residential housing market,” said Gordon.

• Green estates hold sporting appeal At least one in 10 South Africans choose gated communities when making residential property purchases, said Gordon, citing Lightstone research. There are currently nearly 7 000 estates with 355 000 active residential properties valued at R800-billion in South Africa. Here too the effects of the green transition are being felt.

Encouragingly, green estates are not limited to topend eco estates. In the affordable housing market, green estates are also available with an emphasis on the potential savings on utility costs. Fourleaf Estate in Port Elizabeth, first fully EDGE certified residential development in Africa by the GBCSA, offers annual savings on utility bills of around R1 280. In addition to water and energy savings, the estate also encourages recycling and provides community food gardens. Research indicates that there is a move away from traditional golf estates and a rise in demand for retirement and eco estates. According to Pam Golding Properties agents, the most popular estates are those with amenities like golf courses, but also cycling routes, jogging paths and sports fields, thereby accommodating a range of interests, Gordon said.

• Costly utilities fuel green residential trend The anticipated growing cost of utilities coupled with electricity and water shedding increases the appeal of alternative, greener sources of energy and water, and greater efficiency for both, in homes. The underlying trends in SA’s housing market suggest that the transition to green will continue to snowball. More sustainable homes that are well-located and easier to maintain will continue to attract South African buyers, summarised Gordon.

HAND TOOLS

Overview of the global DIY tools market

M

arket research analyst predicts the global DIY tools market to grow steadily at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of above 3% by 2021. The exponential increase in the presence of retail stores such as hypermarkets, supermarkets, and speciality stores offering different DIY products, is the key driver responsible for the growth of the DIY tools market. The growing number of stores have compelled retailers to constantly come up with new ideas and innovative products for better user engagement. For instance, Home Depot offers various DIY projects and ideas allowing customers to perform DIY tasks by watching videos easily. It also offers suggestions on the type of tools that can be used to perform these activities. The Americas held the largest share of the global DIY tools market in 2016. Due to the low popularity of the DIY culture in APAC, the market is highly concentrated in the western countries. One of the major reason for this dominance is the constant engagement of the North American consumers in home improvement. The increased proliferation of media in the form of cable TV, the Internet, and other knowledge centres allows customers to indulge in several projects. This growing importance of digitalisation has played a major factor in boosting the sales of the segment. Digitalisation has also, influenced millennials to increase their participation in the DIY culture, this rising interest is an indication that the region will continue to maintain dominance during the forecast period.

Competitive landscape At present, the DIY tools market is highly fragmented due to the presence of both major and private players. Due to this competition, manufacturers are focusing on innovations to meet the varying buying trend of the consumer. The key factors intensifying this competition are low product differentiation and long product replacement cycles. As a result, pricing, distribution network, and brand recognition are of crucial importance to the vendors. With multiple product launches, price wars, and mergers and acquisitions the competition is expected to intensify over the forecast period. During 2016, the DIY power tools market dominated the DIY tools market and accounted for a major part of the overall market share. This dominance can be attributed to the significant acceptance in the professional segment. The key factor for this acceptance is the wide applications of power tools in the construction, automotive, and manufacturing sectors. Power tools are used for several tasks, such as screw driving, drilling, chiselling, routing, sanding, buffing, polishing, and leveling. DIY stores have dominated the market in the retail format sales segment during 2016. However, it has been observed that over the past few years, the retailers in the market are adopting an omnichannel strategy to sell their products

PAINT

Painting techniques Stenciling If you want to create a repeated pattern, or even an entire mural, on your walls, but you don’t trust your freehand artistic abilities, let a stencil come to your rescue. With nearly endless patterns to choose from, you’re sure to find a design you love. Use a stencil to create a sophisticated design in the master bedroom, or have fun stenciling a barnyard scene or other flight of fancy in a child’s bedroom.

beauty of wall graphics is that you aren’t limited to the stencil designs available in stores – you can project and copy just about anything you desire. This means it’s a great technique for designing wall murals in children’s bedrooms.

Metallics Looking to create a truly glamorous or dramatic look? You’ll achieve just that when you use a soft metallic paint on an accent wall or, if you really want to go all the way, on all the walls.

Stripes Whether you go vertically or horizontally, stripes are an easy way to add lots of fun in a child’s room, or create a touch of drama in the master bedroom. The wider the stripes, the more dramatic the effect, but don’t go skinny – that will be too stimulating. To create the design, first paint the entire wall in the lighter colour, then use painter’s tape to lay out stripes in your desired width. Paint those stripes in the darker colour before removing the tape.

Harlequin Harlequin is a diamond pattern that is easy to create with the right tools. It’s a fun pattern for a child’s bedroom or a nursery, but if you use colours with only slight contrast, it can be a surprisingly sophisticated look in the master bedroom. To create the harlequin pattern, you’ll need to measure and apply painter’s tape in diagonal strips across your wall. Paint over the entire wall, and then remove the tape once the paint is dry.

Checkerboard Less whimsical than harlequin, a checkerboard pattern works well in a contemporary or industrial-influenced room. It’s not a difficult technique, but for the best results, you need to measure carefully. Use painter’s tape to create the checkerboard pattern, paint over the tape, and then remove once the paint is dry. Choose high-contrast colours for drama or subtle hues if you want a more sophisticated vibe.

Wall graphics Wall graphics are similar to stencils, but instead of placing a guide right on the wall, you project the design you want to copy onto the wall with an overhead projector. The

page 38 | Hardware Edition 2018

Polka dots are also lots of fun in a child’s bedroom and what could be easier than dressing up the walls with easily-applied, easily-removed vinyl stickers? Spread them out evenly, let your child position the dots randomly, or create the feel of sprinkling starlight... it’s up to you.

Brushed pearl The brushed pearl paint technique is a wonderful way to add a gorgeous accent wall in a traditional, Mediterranean or country-style room. To create the softly glowing look, begin by painting your wall with a satin base paint colour. Once dry you’ll apply a brushed pearl colour and press it down with a plastic float trowel.

Brushed suede Brushed Suede paint adds a soft touch of texture to your walls, giving it the feel of old-world elegance. It’s a great choice for a Tuscan or Mediterranean-influenced room, or any bedroom with a glamorous or elegant style. You’ll first paint your wall with a base coat, and then apply the Brushed Suede paint in an ‘X’ pattern for textured style.

Colour washing Use colour washing to give your room Mediterranean flair. Colour washing is another wonderful paint technique that adds lots of texture and depth to walls. To create colour washing, you’ll start with your desired colour of satin base coat, and then paint over it with a large brush in a “X” pattern with a glaze paint mixture.

PAINT

Old-world fresco colour washing or mottling Old-world fresco colour washing or mottling technique is similar to colour washing, but an additional layer of textured lime wash over the top of the paint adds further texture to the finish. It’s a wonderful way to add character to a wall or accent wall in an old-world or country bedroom.

Crackle effect Crackle medium causes overlaying wet paint to “crack” into fissures and lines as it’s applied. The resulting distressed, aged appearance is a hallmark of shabby chic, cottage and rustic styles. This isn’t a paint technique for walls, however, it’s used on furniture. The technique is simple: first, apply your base colour and let dry. Then, brush on a coat of crackle medium. If you want thick cracks, apply a thick coat of crackle medium. Finally, paint on your top coat. Take care not to brush across the same area twice, or you will disrupt the cracking effect.

Strié, dragging and linen weave The dragging (or strié) and linen weave paint techniques can be a great way to add texture to a modern, contemporary, or eclectic room wall. To create the strié or dragging technique, mix a satin base coat colour and glaze, apply the mixture on the wall in sections, then drag your wallpaper brush over the wet glaze vertically or horizontally. To create the look of a linen weave drag your wallpaper brush over the wet glaze both vertically and horizontally.

Metals and patinas The metal and patina paint techniques are often used in modern, contemporary or dramatic rooms as an overall wall colour, or to create an accent wall. To create the metal or patina look first paint your wall with a base coat colour. After it’s completely dry, apply a metal or patina paint glaze with a sponge.

Rag rolling Rag rolling is another paint technique often found in country style, old world or traditional rooms. Use the technique on an accent wall, or go bold on all four walls. To create the rag rolling look first paint your walls with a overall base colour. Once it’s dry, use a crumpled rag to apply a darker or lighter glaze colour mixture, rolling it over the wall in random directions.

Sandstone The rough look of sandstone paint covers up imperfections on the walls. Sandstone paint dries to a rough, “sandy” looking texture. It’s an interesting effect, but because it’s a rough texture, it isn’t easy to clean, so you’ll do best using it in a master bedroom or guest room, not a child’s bedroom. To create the look, you’ll need sandstone paint, applied to your wall with a paint roller in a “W” pattern.

Sponging Sponging, like rag rolling, is another textured wall paint technique that works well with many decorating styles. It’s easy to do, just paint your walls with your desired base coat. Once dry, use a natural sea sponge or sponge roller to dab on your desired top colour in random, slightly overlapping patterns.

Textured Stone Textured stone is a more dramatic version of stencils or wallpaper borders The textured stone paint technique is another way to add unique decor to your walls. This is a great way to replace wallpaper borders or stencils in any style of bedroom

Bosch: Pioneer in drilling for maximum efficiency

F

rom the invention of the SDS system to the unique inhouse production of carbide, Bosch always stands out from the competition. Due to ground-breaking innovations, drilling is made more efficient. In 1975, Bosch developed the SDS-plus system which has been an industry standard for precise and reliable drilling ever since. SDS-plus is a drill bit insertion system that guarantees better power transfer and, unlike other systems on the market, enables fast changing of drill bits and chisels.

Today, Bosch can control the blend of tungsten carbide they use. This is in order to achieve the ideal balance between hard and soft carbide. What Bosch can offer is a broad selection of different types of drill bits with outstanding longevity and maximum reliability.

The first point of contact: the drill bit tip The drill bit tip’s first job is to centre the drill bit in order to prevent it from wandering. The drill bit tip also grinds the concrete into extremely fine dust, which can then be removed efficiently from the hole.

Four-cutter Four cutters ensure high performance, largest demolition force and long lifetime in reinforced concrete. The four cutting edges geometry ensures that at least one cutting edge continuously attacks the rebar no matter from which angle it hits.

Drilling dust feed-through channels Larger drilling dust feed-through channels enable immediate dust removal into the flute. Immediate dust removal leads to higher drilling speed, easier work and a longer lifetime of the drill bit.

Centering tip The exposed centre area of the cutting edge is for active centering and provides guidance while drilling. Without active centering, the drill bit will wander on the surface and can falsify the diameter of the hole.

New generation

18 V rotary hammers

T

he GBH 18V-26 Professional and GBH 18V-26 F Professional are the latest additions to the Bosch range of rotary hammers with EC motors. The high performance makes them comparable with corded tools such as the GBH 2-26 Professional. The EC motor is highly efficient and completely maintenance-free. The user can choose between a model with a fixed chuck and a model with a changeable chuck, which is also supplied with a keyless chuck for round shank drill bits. To allow installers to stay in complete control even when carrying out work on hard materials, such as drilling into reinforced concrete, Bosch has equipped the GBH 18V-26 Professional and the GBH 18V-26 F Professional with KickBack Control. If the rotary hammer turns suddenly or unpredictably on its drill axis, as can occur if the drill becomes jammed in reinforced concrete, the integrated sensor shuts off the motor in a fraction of a second. This prevents unexpected kickback of the tool, thereby reducing the risk of injury. The integrated Electronic Precision Control (EPC) feature supports tradespeople when drilling into delicate materials such as tiles. If the EPC function is activated, the maximum power of the rotary hammer is limited to 70%, with a slower run-up. This enables professional tradespeople to work in impact mode from the very start of their task by omitting one work step. The bit is prevented from slipping off when the user starts to drill, and precise results can be achieved quickly and easily.

page 48 | Hardware Edition 2018

When developing the new generation of 18 V rotary hammers, Bosch also redesigned the shape of the tools and optimised them for ergonomic work. The handle is now in line with the drill axis on both tools. This ‘L’-shape reduces the effort and fatigue involved during working. In addition, both rotary hammers feature efficient vibration damping. A damping element uncouples the main handle from the hammer drive, reducing vibrations actively. To enable tradespeople to work in building stock in a dustfree environment, such as when retrofitting light fittings, Bosch now offers the new 18 V rotary hammers with an active integrated dust extractor. The GDE 18V-16 Professional can simply be attached to the rotary hammer when required. It has its own motor, also supplied with power by the rotary hammer battery. To allow drilling to be carried out easily and cleanly using dust extraction, the dust extractor has an automatic power on/off function. It starts automatically at the same time as the rotary hammer. However, to ensure optimal dust extraction, it continues to function for two seconds after the drilling operation is ended. The integrated HEPA filter also provides reliable dust protection and, like the dust container, can be cleaned and emptied in just a few easy movements. Further features include an LED light on the housing to illuminate the working area, as well as a powerful 6.0 Ah battery. With its accompanying GAL 1880 CV Professional quick charger, the battery is fully charged in just 50 minutes, which is 30% faster than the previous model.

These are the GHP 5-55 Professional, the GHP 5-65 Professional, the GHP 5-65 X Professional, the GHP 5-75 Professional and the GHP 5-75 X Professional. The products differ in terms of flow rate and pressure, allowing Bosch to cover a wider application range in the entry-level segment. Whether caretaker, decorator, or commercial cleaner, end users can choose the product that suits their needs ‒ from occasional use to daily use.

cleaning stairs, for example, as it helps prevent the device from tipping over. The large rubber wheels are another advantage: They make it easier to manoeuvre the device on uneven ground. In addition, the extendable telescopic handle and compact design ensure that the devices are easy to transport, and can be stored without taking up too much space. If you are looking for the ultimate in convenience, you should look for a model with an X in the name. As these have an integrated hose reel that winds up the 10-m-long high-pressure hose neatly.

pump automatically when the switch is released. This saves water and energy. The lances, nozzles and accessories are stored directly on the device. The new screw connector coupling of the high-pressure gun and cleaning lance ensures that the elements can be put together, or taken apart, quickly and easily. The scope of delivery includes one adjustable vario fan jet lance. The GHP 5-65 Professional, GHP 5-65 X Professional, GHP 5-75 Professional and GHP 5-75 X Professional high-pressure washers also have a rotor lance for quick

and efficient cleaning of larger areas. Brass inlet and outlet pipes protect the high-pressure washers against corrosion, and also contribute to the long life of the devices, such as stainless steel pistons in the pumps. The GHP 5-55 Professional, GHP 5-65 Professional and GHP 5-65 X Professional high-pressure washers have an aluminium pump, while the GHP 5-75 Professional and GHP 5-75 X Professional models are equipped with a brass pump. On these two devices, the maximum pressure of 185 bar can be adjusted according to demand. The GHP 5-75 X Professional also has a pressure gauge.

Brushless EC motor doubles the life-span of Bosch compact tool

T

he addition of a brushless EC motor to the Bosch GSB 18 V-EC Professional has doubled the life-span of this popular compact tool. “This forms part of the ‘dynamic series’ from Bosch, a series of compact tools with a long battery runtime based on tried-and-tested models”, Campbell Mhodi, Bosch Professional Power Tools Senior Brand Manager, explains. “They have a much longer life-span thanks to the EC technology, lasting twice as long as competitor tools. This makes these compact tools especially suitable for serial applications, allowing for quick and efficient operations in finishing trades such as electricians, plumbers and joiners,” Mhodi elaborates. Bosch’s brushless EC motors are completely maintenance-free, unlike conventional DC motors with carbon brushes. In addition, the former operate at an efficiency rate of 80%, as opposed to the 60% to 70% efficiency rate of the latter. “This high efficiency also means the tools do not get as hot, and can perform up to 30% more work per battery charge,” Mhodi reveals. In addition, Electronic Motor Protection (EMP) protects these compact tools against overload by shutting the motor down immediately if it stalls. The EC technology also allows for a compact and lightweight design.

Optional accessories for the GSB 18 V-EC include CYL-9 multi-purpose drill bits for a range of diverse construction activities. These drill bit feature an active centring tip for active cutting in concrete, fine-grade highly-durable carbide, extra-long life and best wear resistance, and diameter-optimised brazing and hardening technology to increase the robustness of the drill bits, and also to reduce vibration during drilling.

POWER TOOLS

World power tools

G

lobal demand for power tools is forecast to increase 4.8 percent per year through 2018 to $32.9 billion, an improvement from the gains recorded between 2008 and 2013. Advances will be fastest in the world’s developing areas, where significant and increasing levels of construction spending are expected. In general, power tool use in the world’s developing areas is less saturated, and most sales there are to first time purchasers. China and India, which are in the process of modernising their housing stock, will see particularly rapid growth in power tool demand. Among developed nations, power tool sales will be boosted by improved economic conditions and increasing construction activity in the US and Western Europe.

Asia/Pacific region to be fastest growing market In 2013, the US was the world’s largest consumer and second largest producer of power tools, accounting for 24 percent of sales and 12 percent of output. Between 2013 and 2018, the US market will account for approximately one-sixth of additional global sales. The country is a significant market for power tools because it is home to substantial tool using industries such as construction, general manufacturing, and motor vehicle production and repair. In addition, there is widespread interest in do-ityourself (DIY) activities, resulting in a sizable consumer market. China was the second largest national market for power tools in 2013, with ten percent of global demand, and was the largest producer, with one-third of global output. In addition, power tool growth in China through 2018 will be nearly double the global average. However, India will post even more rapid gains among major countries, albeit from a very small base. Both countries have extremely low power tool market penetration rates, with widespread adoption limited by the high initial purchase price of power tools compared to non-powered hand tools. Poverty and unreliable electric grids also play a role, particularly in rural areas. In much of the developing world, the availability of low cost labourers utilising hand tools has limited power tool demand.

page 54 | Hardware Edition 2018

Source : The Freedonia Group - Industry Market Research

Cordless electric tools to post fastest growth Electric tools account for the vast majority of total power tool sales, a reflection of their ease of use compared to other power tool types. Cordless electric models will post the most robust growth as steady improvements in battery technology -- such as the adoption of lithium-ion batteries -- increase power and run time, areas where corded products still hold a significant advantage. Cordless tool manufacturers have also begun to design product lines around one battery structure, increasing convenience by reducing the number of spare batteries needed at the job site or around the home.

Study coverage This Freedonia industry study analyses the $26 billion world power tool industry. It presents historical demand data (2003, 2008 and 2013) and forecasts (2018 and 2023) by product (e.g., drills; saws; sanders, polishers and grinders), electric power source (plug-in electric, cordless electric, pneumatic), market (professional, consumer), world region, and for 25 countries. The study also considers market environment factors, details industry structure, evaluates company market share, and profiles 34 industry participants, including Stanley Black & Decker, Bosch, and Makita.

POWER TOOLS

Stanley Power Tools Proudly distributed by WHD

W

HD recognised that there was a need for a more professional power tool in their offering specifically for those customers who are servicing the building trade. They began looking for a top quality reliable power tool to suit the upper end of the DIY market. Stanley’s history of 170 years in the tools segment of the market meant that there could not be a better brand to service those needs. A range was selected which covered all the essential sectors of wood, metal, masonry, electrical and plumbing work. In 2017 the concept was launched with 14 Stanley power tools with a specifically designed display stand using effective merchandising methods designed by Stanley. The entry into this market sector was well received by the customer base and still grows steadily after many months of trading. The power tool market is always underpinned by the 115mm grinder and the percussion drill. Our Stanley power tool range starts with the very popular 710w 115 mm grinders (STGS7115-B9) and the 650W 13mm percussion drill (STDH6513-B9).

Carpentry in modern building work, whether it be roofing, doors or cupboard installation relies on Percussion drill circulars saws, planers, belt sanders and the now essential cordless drill. This is well supported by the Stanley 1510w 185mm circular saw (STSC1518-B9), the Stanley 750w 82.7 rebate planer, the Stanley 720w 75x533mm belt sander (STBS720-B9) and the reliable Stanley Li-ion 18 v Cordless hammer drill with two batteries (STDC18LHBK-B9). Plumbers and electricians are catered for by the Stanley 620w rotary hammer (STHR202K-B9) and a robust Stanley 720w hammer drill (STDH7213K-B9).

POWER TOOLS

XTREME Plus power tools

T

hree years ago, WHD launched its range of XTREME PLUS power tools. A clear specification was given to ensure we could provide all the required features and benefits deemed essential to attack the top end of the DIY power tool market. Emphasis was placed on reliability, quality and value for money to the consumer.

The circular saw became a firm favourite with the roofing sector as a solid, no frills, reliable power tool. To round off the timber related products is a door hanging quintessential 900W X 82mm planer (XPL900 40-3052) and for basic sanding, the 900W 76x533 belt sander (XBS900 40-3051).

This meant that quality was an imperative; where armatures, field coils, switches and bearings were concerned. Reduced specification in these areas was known to have a marked effect on failure rate. This emphasis on quality rather than frills proved to be wise and after nearly three years, the failure rate has remained exceptionally low.

XTREME Plus Power tool warranty repair work is supported by the Xpress Repairs network of repair agents countrywide. +27 011 0712177 (www.xpressrepairs.co.za)

XTREME Plus offers good quality power tools for the consumer who expects more than an entry level product but at a competitive price; that makes purchasing decisions easy. As expected, the bulk of power tool sales is taken up by the basic 600 watt drill (XID600-13 40-3045) and 115 mm 600 watt grinder (XAG600-115-3 40-3046). However, there are some other stars that rose to the occasion. The 810 watt hammer drill (XID810-13KC 403070) is the only one in its class with a metal keyless chuck and the 18 v Impact drill (XID 18 40-3059) with two batteries gradually but effectively gained the recognition it deserved with amazing battery life.

Various configurations of truss hangers are available, thus offering a range of load values whilst keeping economy in mind. eCo Truss Hangers have been tested to establish safe working loads. eCo Truss Hangers have been designed for timber to timber, timber to steel or timber to concrete connection applications.

Basic requirements

• Supported truss must butt firmly against girder or wall. No gap is allowed • Torsional restraint strap must be used on girders in accordance with the specifications. • Hangers must be fully nailed into both back and side flanges. • The eCo Permfix nails (identified by the MII marking on heads and their distinct blue colour) must be used for these design values to be valid. • NB: The design values contained in this brochure supersede all previously mentioned. • All bolted values are based on M12 bolts into concrete with 3mm x 36mm washers, assuming 2 bolts in the ‘S’ type and 4 bolts in the ‘L’ type hanger and with supported truss/joist fully nailed with eCo Permfix nails into the side flanges.

eCo Permfix Nails The eCo Permfix collar nail is specifically designed for use with eCo products such as truss hangers, purlin clips, purlin bracing strap, speed brace etc. The shaft of the nail is serrated as a standard ring shank nail and MII is forged on the head for easy identification. The nail is blue DiSTek coated for superior corrosion resistance. The eCo Permfix nail has been tested in a laboratory under controlled conditions and has proved to attain an increased holding capacity over ordinary nails. The thickened collar ensures that the head does not break-off during application which is often the case when using clout nails.

WAREHOUSING & Logistics

A recommended approach to warehouse layout and operational design

I

s your warehouse full of pallets sitting on the aisle instead of up in the racks?

Do you need a bigger facility to cater for the forecast growth of your business over the medium to long term? Is your warehouse operation inefficient? Does your warehouse storage and layout design desperately need optimisation? Is your current warehouse lease ending, leaving you to decide between staying put and moving to a new facility?

Perhaps it’s time to review your warehouse design If you answer yes to any of the above questions, it’s probably time to give your warehousing requirements a thorough review. That being said, it’s not always easy to know where to begin, so here are a few tips to help you get a well-structured, methodical, warehouse review/ redesign process under way.

customer service, or perhaps to minimise capital expenditure. If you don’t plan to commission a new warehouse on a greenfield site, your plans might be constrained by the characteristics of an existing facility. A clear understanding of objectives and constraints will provide you with the starting point for your design review, so it’s important to get them documented and to make sure all stakeholders are aware of them.

2) Know your operational profile and requirements In order to maximise the benefits of your warehouse review, you should be completely familiar with the characteristics of all products that are to be stored. The most important SKU characteristics to understand are as follows: • Dimensions, weight, number of units per pack, pack dimensions, pack weight • Pallet size, height, and weight • Special handling needs and environmental/temperature control requirements What are the throughput velocities of your products? It’s important to be familiar with the inbound and outbound history of each SKU, and to know how fast or slowly it turns around in your warehouse. Order and picking profiles should be examined too. For example, is an SKU typically ordered by the pallet, carton, split carton, or individual unit?

1) Understand the design objectives and constraints The first step in your review should be to determine and prioritise the objectives for your warehouse facility and operation. It’s also important to document any constraints that will impact your plans to meet those objectives. For example, your company’s objective might be to achieve maximum operational productivity, to improve

page 64 | Hardware Edition 2018

In addition to profiling individual SKUs, you should try to look at the relationships between them. For instance, do you have two or more SKUs that are commonly ordered together? If so, you should plan to slot them close together to improve picking efficiency. Another key factor in warehouse-design planning is the quantity of inventory you intend to hold, either in an existing or new facility. This means taking into account stock currently on hand, along with any plans for expansion. Stock-on-hand snapshots should be taken during peak, normal, and low seasonal periods. When planning, remember also to consider requirements for specialised storage and processing areas, such as a production room or caged-off quarantine areas.

WAREHOUSING & Logistics

• Google Sketchup

3) Storage & layout design Having evaluated your operational profile, you should be able start thinking about warehouse storage media and the number/capacity of storage locations. Will you fit your warehouse with standard racking, or do you see a need for more specialised apparatus such as carousels, or an automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS)?

– Sketchup is not specifically intended to be a warehouse layout design tool, but has the capabilities necessary for warehouse modeling and can generate perfectly good design visualisations. The biggest benefit of this tool though is cost, as the license is less expensive than either AutoCad or CLASS.

Of course this stage of planning can become pretty complex, and it will often pay to seek advice from equipment suppliers or even engage a consulting firm to help you develop your storage strategy. Whether you bring in some external help or go it alone, keep the following tips in mind when planning your new warehouse layout: • Optimise flow by minimising the number of touches as SKUs pass through the warehouse • Prioritise workforce safety when designing your solutions • Model a few design options and determine the best solution through quantitative/qualitative comparisons Involve all stakeholders in the planning and design process to attain their buy-in It will pay to make use of digital design and modeling software to help you arrive at an optimal warehouse layout and strategy. There are a number of very good applications on the market. These tools will help you design different solution-options to compare and evaluate. You might try any of the following three examples, or hire external specialists that work with them: • CLASS (Cirrus Logistics Ltd): – Commonly used by 3PLs, the CLASS software license is expensive but the application is userfriendly and provides 2D/3D views of your layout designs, including elevation views of storage media. – CLASS allows users to design the layout of their warehouses ahead of commissioning projects and without disrupting current operations. – CLASS delivers scale models and drawings that are clear and easy to understand. • AutoCAD – An AutoCAD software license is less expensive than CLASS. However, the application is less user-friendly and is typically used by engineers and racking vendors for design and specifications.

4) Document all results and assumptions Throughout the warehouse planning and design process, you will gather a lot of facts and probably make a fair number of assumptions. It’s good practice to document all facts and assumptions, because this will help you recall how designs were derived. Your records will also prove useful for future layout reviews, which should ideally be conducted every couple of years.

Design with competition in mind There are any number of reasons why you might wish to review (and perhaps redesign) the layout and operation of your warehouse facility, but they all boil down to the same thing—securing or increasing your company’s competitive advantage. By taking a thorough and methodical approach (like the one outlined in this article) to warehouse design reviews and improvement plans, your company can extract maximum value from its facilities, removing many of the inventory management obstacles that inflate supply chain costs and ultimately erode profitability. WAREHOUSING

& Logistics

Logistics

I

t’s no exaggeration to say that cargo logistics is the backbone of any country. Logistics services are responsible for bringing our food, drinks and other consumer goods to supermarket shelves. Logistics is also how we get the petrol that goes in our cars, and how South Africa as a growing economy is able to participate in the world economy through imports and exports. The transport logistics industry in Africa, and particularly in South Africa, is developing quickly, offering numerous new opportunities, but there are, and probably always will be, a number of difficult challenges to the industry. In the 10th State of Logistics Survey for South Africa, it was suggested that South Africa needs to focus more on improving transport logistics infrastructure, the high costs of logistics services, and the lack of skilled workers in the cargo logistics industry as a whole. Failure to address these issues in a rapidly growing economy could cause major issues not only in the logistics game, but also in those industries which rely on cargo logistics to do their business as well.

Infrastructure The state of a country’s transport infrastructure (its roads, customs processes, sea and airports, and other features) determine the efficiency with which it can do business and therefore has a direct impact on the growth of the economy. A good infrastructure also encourages investment from overseas, with international companies carefully assessing whether an inefficient infrastructure will damage their bottom line. Government has pledged to spend R813 million over the next couple of years on infrastructure, and cargo and logistics already account for

about 42% of all infrastructure spending. This focus on improvement of infrastructure is aimed at improving the national transport network, assisting in mobilising South Africa’s workforce and making local trade easier and more profitable. However, with the economic crunch, we find ourselves in lately, it is becoming more difficult for Government to find the resources to keep up with their commitment, prompting involvement from the private sector which is helping to fill in the gaps where government funding falls short.

High Logistics Costs Fuel prices are by far the most volatile, unpredictable and expensive cost in the logistics process. Logistics providers also have vehicle maintenance, and tyre wear to consider when trucking goods across South Africa. Contributing to high fuel costs are rough roads, traffic congestion, and other problems that South Africa’s infrastructure present. Companies who do a lot of cross-country trucking are also now being faced with the prospect of nationwide e-tolls, raising the costs of road use (and therefore the cost of living in general). While the fuel price is relatively low at the moment, it probably won’t stay that way forever, and logistics providers are going to have to come up with creative ways to keep their prices affordable in an unstable and increasingly expensive local economy.

An unskilled workforce Education continues to plague South Africa as one of the most stubborn and difficult challenges to national prosperity and the fight against unemployment, and will be all the more important in the logistics industry in the future. Technology has made jobs, on many levels of the logistics industry, into positions requiring basic computer skills and more, meaning that hiring efficient staff for a logistics project is more and more difficult. South Africa isn’t alone in this – 39% of freight businesses worldwide are struggling to recruit people with the skills needed for a modern logistics operation. Of course, each year and new development seems to bring with it new challenges, but also new opportunities to tackle those challenges creatively. We’re confident that as African business continues to grow, the road freight industry will manage to keep pace and pave the way for a South Africa that can continue to compete with the best of the best in terms of road freighting.

WATERPROOFING

Waterproofing basics

B

efore starting on a waterproofing project thoroughly clean the surface of your concrete. With a stiff brush, some TSP (trisodium phosphate) and some water, wash away any loose material, oil, or dirt still clinging to the concrete. Most membranes like a clean surface to adhere to. Let dry before proceeding. Use a liquid membrane for quickness and economy. Liquid membranes are usually polymer-based coatings that can be sprayed, trowelled, or rolled directly onto concrete. They have the advantage of being quick to apply and are relatively low in cost. Follow manufacturer’s instructions on how to apply. Use a self-adhering sheet membrane for consistency. Self-adhering sheet membranes are large, rubberised asphalt membranes that you peel and place directly onto the concrete. Sheet membranes boast even thickness, but are more expensive (in both parts and labour) than liquid membranes, and can take some time getting used to. Self-adhering sheet membranes are extremely sticky. You need to be very diligent about peeling the membrane to expose the sticky side, because it will stick to anything it comes in contact with, and it’s virtually impossible to unstick it once it is laid. Be sure to pay special attention to how sheet membranes overlap, as improper installation can result in the possibility for leakage. Make sure that lap joints are properly cut and that a bead of mastic is run down every lap joint that’s spaced within one foot of a corner. Sheet membranes need at least two people to install. Installing them by yourself is a sure recipe for a poor job and create a lot of needless frustration for yourself. Try using cementitious waterproofing. Cementitious waterproofing, aside from having a moniker that takes a mouthful, are easy to mix and easy to apply. Buy them from your local masonry supply store. Mix them with an acrylic additive for a better bond, and then apply with a long-handled brush for ease. The one downside to cementitious waterproofing is that it doesn’t have any elasticity, making it prone to cracking over longer periods of time.

page 72 | Hardware Edition 2018

Opt for sodium bentonite if you want to use a nonpolluting, ‘green’ method of waterproofing. Sodium bentonite is used in a lot of city dumps to prevent liquids from leeching into the underlying soil. It is essentially clay, and will act as a good waterproofing agent if you’re concerned about leaving a human footprint. Bentonite also has the advantage of being able to cover smooth as well as coarser surfaces.

Finishing up and other considerations Know which walls to apply waterproofing to. Deciding which walls to waterproof and which ones to forgo can save you time, money, and headache. Here’s a water-clad rule for which walls to waterproof: Waterproof any walls with soil on one side and habitable space (including crawl space) on the other. Here are some other tips to consider: If the site or the area is especially wet, you may want to waterproof all walls. • Extend the waterproofing at (0.3 m) from any wall or surface that does need waterproofing to any that doesn’t. You want a little bit of a buffer, just to be sure. • Apply the finish system you have selected to the wall according to the manufacturer’s directions. Depending on the method of waterproofing you use, the manufacturer will have different suggestions and best practices. Consult the instructions of whatever product you are using • Apply a suitable roof sealer to your roof if you have a cast in place concrete roof. This is an unusual situation, but there are homes with cast in place concrete roof systems, and typically, roofing cement and fibre reinforced roll roofing is applied to the roof to prevent water intrusion. • If the house doesn’t have sufficient slope to allow water to drain off the roof in a rain event, you may have to apply tar or a synthetic waterproofing membrane directly to the concrete, or use a seamless rubber roofing system. These products are more suitable for professional contractors to use. Remember to allow for proper drainage in addition to waterproofing measures. Waterproofing won’t do much if the water that jets off the walls doesn’t have a good place to drain to.

HARDWARE DISTRIBUTION BASED ON TRADITIONAL VALUES HARDWARE, CONSUMABLES, CHEMICALS, TOOLS & SAFETY hardware•consumables•tools•safety•chemicals

FEATURE ON PLUS TEN WHOLESALE Our History: Plus Ten Hardware was established in 1989, at a time when the hardware industry was virtually controlled by wholesale hardware merchants. Most of the local manufacturers distributed their products exclusively through this monopoly. This prompted Wholesalers to establish their own forum, called the Wholesale Hardware Association and through this body, shaped pricing structures in the hardware retail trade. The 80/20 Rule: Plus Ten was established with the direct purpose of challenging the wholesaler alliance. Our 80/20 rule was founded on a principle that helps hardware stores, where it matters. Our product range offer included the 20 % of stock items that make 80 % of the Hardware stores total turnover, at discounted prices.

As a result of this audacious strategy, Plus Ten was boycotted by many manufacturers and struggled to fill stock ranges for a certain period. However, as time progressed and the market matured , most of the traditional wholesalers were forced to shut down. As a result of this shift , Cash & Carry stores were established and mass multinational corporations were entrenched. Plus Ten, survived the transition and grew stronger. Over the past twenty eight years, Plus Ten has evolved with the times and has been able to successfully adjust to market changes. Service and pricing has always remained at the forefront of Plus Ten’s operations. We now service our 3200 customers from a well stocked 6500 square metre warehouse. We are conveniently situated in Reuven, Booysens, a suburb South of Johannesburg, that has easy access to all the major highways.

Is your packaging compliant?

P

ackaging for all dangerous goods is regulated, as well as packaging for many food-stuffs. Dangerous Goods (DG) are chemicals and articles that have been classified at global level and designated a UN number together with a Hazard Class as they can pose risks to people, property and the environment if not correctly packaged, handled, stored and transported. They include Industrial products and retail products such as household chemicals and cleaning materials, aerosols, personal products, detergents, paints, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides, fuels, batteries and many other every day products. In the 1950’s the United Nations, recognising the increasing global trade through shipping and road and rail transport, initiated a committee of experts who compiled Technical Regulations for Safe Packaging, Documentation and Transport to provide for common understanding and use for safe transport around the world to enhance safety and prevent accidents. Through this Committee the UN Model Regulations for Transport of Dangerous Goods evolved and forms the umbrella for all modes of transport globally. These cascade to the Modal Regulations i.e. Air, Sea, Road & Rail through the International Civil Aviation Office – Air, International Maritime Office IMDG Regulations – Sea, and Regional and National Regulations for Road & Rail. South Africa is a Member of the UN Committee and has adopted these into law through National Standards. All dangerous goods are classified into one of nine classes based on their physical, safety hazards i.e. explosives, gases, flammable liquids, flammable solids (including

By Liz Anderson

powders), oxidizing chemicals and organic peroxides, radio actives, corrosives plus class nine miscellaneous dangerous goods and articles including environmentally hazardous substances. The nine classes are defined in the UN Model Regulations for Transport of dangerous goods, and in the SAN 10228 and 10229 Standards. All are regulated for packaging, labelling, documentation and consignment procedures for transport. They are allocated a UN number which must marked on the label and documents to promote safe handling together with the applicable Hazard warning diamond.

Key packaging principles Safe Packaging is the starting point for safe transport. Compatibility with product to be packed is a fundamental requirement for all packaging. It is therefore essential for the packaging designer, and manufacturer as well as the product manufacturer to understand the composition and properties of the products to be packed. Safe compliant packaging specifications applies to retail products, samples and industrial products for use with all modes of transport i.e. road, rail, sea and air. The essential rules for dangerous goods packaging are: • Compatible with contents • Compliant with DG specifications • UN Tested and Certified • Each unit of packaging permanently marked with the UN Packaging certification to confirm that it is safe for use with the product to be packed • Correct labelling with product name and UN Number, hazard type and pictogram/s, name of manufacturer and 24/7/365 emergency contact number Packaging Regulations are regularly reviewed by the UN committee of experts in terms of new technologies and investigations into accidents and incidents around the word. They are clearly defined and any necessary improvements are included in the two yearly revisions of the UN Model Regulations which are taken into the following revision of the Modal and Regional Regulations. Responsible packaging manufacturers will advise their customers what specification of packaging is appropriate for their products, as long as the correct classification of the product is informed. Product manufacturers are responsible to pack and label their products in UN compliant packaging. This is Product Stewardship / Producer Responsibility which is regulated under Transport, Environmental Legislation and others.

Risks of using non-compliant packaging? Packaging is the starting point for safe handling, storage and packaging – use of non-compliant packaging could lead to failures which could have serious adverse effects on workers, the public, property and the environment. Liability and costs to rectify any harm done would be for the account of the manufacturer if he did not use compliant and properly marked and labelled packaging! Exporters could have their shipments denied under Maritime – IMDG Law + receiving countries finding nocompliant packaging could quarantine shipments and require the product Manufacturer to repack and label in quarantine and bear all cost + pay a hefty fine. The EU counties are particularly strict on this and now even more strict since the GHS requirements came into effect from 1 June 2015.

What does this mean for Industry – Product Manufacturers have to classify their products to the new GHS classification and compile GHS compliant Safety Data Sheets – SDS, and label correctly plus check that the packaging is still appropriate for the health and environmental hazards that the product may pose. RPMASA has been a Member of the UN Sub-Committees of Experts for Transport of Dangerous Goods and for the GHS since 2006, and provides Training on dangerous goods legislation and requirements, the IMDG and the GHS. For more information contact: info@rpmasa.org.za Tel: +27 87 722 1636 – www.rpmasa.org.za

The companies insurance may refuse to cover such costs as these packaging Regulations have been in place globally for over 60 years! Costs of harm to people and environmental impairment are very high, and any adverse publicity can be even more damaging to a Manufacturer!

GHS classification and implications In 2003 an additional classification scheme the GHS was introduced at UN level by a new committee of experts for the GHS – the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. This adds human health and environmental risks to the transport physical risks.

Labour Laws

and the hardware industry

T

he retail and hardware industry have similar rules and regulations to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, however, there are some differences especially with regard to the changes outlined in the Sectoral Determination No 9. It is vital to note and understand and of course implement a payslip for every single employee with the employers’ name and address, the employees name and occupation, the period in respect of which payment was made and the employees wage rate and overtime rate. You could outline the ordinary hours worked by the employee during that period and the number of overtime hours worked by the employee during that period. If the employee works on a public holiday on a Sunday this must be mentioned and if the employee is to receive any commission this should be outlined in the pay slip. All deductions must be properly structured and evidenced on the pay slip statement. It is imperative that the employee retains a copy or record of each statement for at least three years. An employer must pay an employee at least one and a half times the employees wage for overtime at work. Alternatively, time off can be given for every hour of overtime worked. Meal intervals must be given to every employee who works continuously for more than five hours. The meal interval must be at least one continuous hour. The employee should not be required or permitted to perform duties during that hour unless those duties cannot be performed by another employee. If the employee is available during that meal interval the employee would then be required to be paid. All employees will receive a daily rest period of at least twelve consecutive hours between ending work and starting the next day and there must be a weekly rest period of at least thirty six hours which, unless otherwise agreed, must include a Sunday. It should be noted that an employer must pay an employee who works on a Sunday at double the employees wage for each hour worked unless the employee ordinarily works on a Sunday in which case the employer must pay the employee at least one and a half times the employees wage for each hour worked.

page 82 | Hardware Edition 2018

Likewise, night work performed after 7pm and before 7am can only be done by agreement and the employee must be compensated of an allowance at a rate of at least 10% of the hourly wage for every hour or part of an hour that the employee works at night. Transport must be available between the employee’s place of residence and the work place at the beginning and end of the employee’s shift. The employee may request to undergo a medical examination before the employee starts or within a reasonable period of the employee starting such night work. Public holidays are often a source of concern and an employer may not require an employee to work on public holidays except in accordance with an agreement. If the public holiday falls on a day on which an employee would ordinarily have worked, an employer must pay an employee who does not work the daily wage and must pay the one who does work at least double the daily wage. Annual leave is the same as the Basic Conditions of Employment Act outlining that an employee is entitled to at least three calendar weeks annual leave on full pay in respect of each twelve months of employment. An employer must grant an employee an additional day of paid leave if a public holiday falls on a day during the employees’ annual leave on which the employee would otherwise have worked. Obviously, an employer may reduce an employees’ entitlement to annual leave by the number of days of occasional leave on full pay granted to the employee at the employees request in that annual leave cycle. Leave in respect of each twelve months of employment must be taken not later than six months after the end of the annual leave cycle or the year in which the leave was earned. An employer must not require or permit an employee to work for the employer during any period of annual leave. It is vital for an employer to understand that the employer must pay the employee leave pay before the beginning of the period of leave or by agreement on the employees’ normal pay day. Ten visual merchandising tips for traders A

ll merchants know that stock management is one of the trickiest business tasks to get to grips with. Merely using stock control software (and common sense) to keep stock levels where they should be is only the beginning of the sales process, however – particularly when it comes to winning new custom. For DIY and non-trade customers in particular, your shop must make the right impression if you’re to secure a sale – from the front window, right through the shop and to the checkout. That’s where visual merchandising comes in. Carefully crafted shop displays aren’t just for boutiques and supermarkets; builders’ merchants and other traders should brush up on visual merchandising too.

1. Needs vs. wants The majority of customers will come into your store knowing almost exactly what they’re looking for, so there’s little point dedicating display space to these ‘needs’. Instead, promote ‘wants’. These premium products from top brands have a bigger margin than ‘needs’, and if you put them in a prominent position in the store you’ll be more likely to secure a sale.

2. Showcase new arrivals Rotate displays every two to four weeks to showcase new and seasonal products. This will add interest for your regular and returning customers.

3. Don’t isolate products If you’re ordering a batch of related items (lawn mowing or gardening equipment, for example), then hold back on creating a display for these products until most or all of them have been delivered. This gives you the opportunity to display these items together and increases the chance of gaining add-on sales.

4. Use colour to draw and hold interest As a builders’ merchant, you might think that fancy, arty displays are unnecessary, but the careful use of colour combinations can draw the eye to products you’d like to showcase. Contrasting and complementary colours work best, such as red/white or white/black.

This means that customers will have a clear view of much of the merchandise as they enter the store.

TIP &tric

S

ks

6. Irrelevant object in window As a builders’ merchant, you might not have as much passing trade as clothes retailers or bakeries, but your window display should still have the ability to tempt people off the streets and into the store for an impulse buy. One trick that some traders use is to install an unrelated prop in the shop window to draw attention to your store. It could be anything from a memorable sculpture to an antiquated object. The aim of these oddities is to make passers-by stop and question why they’re in the window display. They’ll either come in to explore the shop or at least remember it!

7. Consider lighting and shadows Take a tour of your store and make note of any areas where lighting is poor or products are in shadow. Consider investing in additional light sources or moving displays or stock to prevent this.

8. Asymmetry, the rule of three and pyramids If you want to add interest to a display, consider how to set it apart from rows of shelves. Asymmetry often draws the eye, and the all-powerful rule of three also applies. Consider using a pyramid shaped display: the viewer will look at the top-most product before their eyes reach the products either side and below.

9. Signs and space Every store should be easy to navigate. Leave plenty of space to aid product visibility and use signage to direct customers around the shop. This tip may seem simple but signs and space can drastically improve a customer’s retail experience.

10. Never let displays become sparse

5. Use height to your advantage

A sparse display may show that a product is popular, but empty shelves can be off-putting to potential customers. Either restock or rotate.

Stacking shelves from floor to ceiling may be the best way of getting the most products in your store, but cramped displays are likely to dent sales – at least putting off DIY shoppers. Instead, think more carefully about height. Have lower displays at the front of the shop, gradually increasing the height as you head further into the store.

Visual merchandising is key to winning and retaining customers, but all your efforts will be for nought if you don’t have the right stock in the right place at the right time. Stock control software is integral to almost every builders’ merchant in 2015. Is your software due for an upgrade?

Retail staff training – how to improve

performance, sales and customer service

D

o you think your store could use more motivated, top performing employees? Do you feel as if your staff could do better at selling and serving customers? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, keep reading.

To ensure that your employees can internalise what’s being taught, utilise two or more learning methods to train them. For example, you can verbally teach your staff about company policies, and reinforce the information through handouts or videos so employees can refresh their memories when they need to do.

Hire for attitude - train for skill

Or, if you’re training your staff on how to use software such as your POS or inventory system, it’s best to demonstrate the programs in person, and then refer them to how-to videos that they can come back to.

The success of your training programme doesn’t just rely on your teaching methods, it also hinges on the inherent attitudes and values of your staff. “We can hire nice people and teach them to sell, but we can’t hire sales people and teach them to be nice.” That’s why it pays to put attitude over aptitude when hiring new people. Yes, it would be nice to have someone who has both, but if you had to choose between attitude vs. aptitude, always go with the former. It’ll be much easier to train a positive person who’s open to learning and who shares your values than it is to modify someone’s default attitude and disposition. So the next time you’re on the lookout for new employees, be sure to look at their nature and disposition first, before evaluating their knowledge and skills. Implement ways to assess their natural inclinations through personality quizzes or by conducting group interviews.

Implement modular training Once you have the right people on board, it’s time to ensure that their training goes well. Naturally, you want to train people in a way that ensures they pick up and retain the most amount of information. One way to accomplish this is by implementing modular training, which means offering short and flexible training segments instead of long and winding sessions. Modular training enables staff to be brought in prior to store opening, or stay after store closing, if it cannot be accommodated any other way.

Use a mix of learning tools and methods The best way to make learning stick is through the use of varied training materials and methods. One format may not be enough to answer the needs of diverse learners.

page 84 | Hardware Edition 2018

Role-play with your employees regularly Role playing can be quite effective, especially when it comes to sales training. role playing can be your number one key ingredient to help bring your sales training to life and it will be the very thing that makes your staff finally just get it! There are several ways to eliminate role-playing’s awkward factor and make it fun. Here are some suggestions: Role Playing doesn’t have to be formal. Start by observing your staff out on the sales floor. In between customers, spend some time re-enacting sales conversations that didn’t net out in a sale. Keep it casual. Role Playing doesn’t have to be in front of the entire sales team. Warm your staff up to the idea by using Role Playing in your one-on-one coaching sessions. Just you and your staff member; no judgement. Role Play the good and the bad. You’ll be so surprised how quickly your staff grasps a selling concept when you act out “what not to do!” Not only will it cause uproarious laughter which relaxes the team, it will clearly reveal where things went sideways in the sale process. Once your staff is comfortable with Role Playing, integrate one scenario into every Shift Starter Meeting. This is a great way to kick-off each shift during the day. It immediately gets everyone thinking about sales and it allows managers to select one selling skill a day to focus on. During larger staff meetings, allow time to Role Play as a group. Put a bunch of “What Would You Do?” scenarios in a hat and give everyone a chance to get up and act out the perfect sale.

Know when to enforce rules and when to give employees room to be creative Pay attention to the rules and guidelines that you train employees on. While these are necessary to keep employees in line and ensure consistency in procedures, there may be some areas in your business that don’t require rigid rules. In some cases, it may actually be more beneficial to empower employees to use their judgment and be creative. For example, while it’s certainly best to have step-bystep instructions when training people on how to operate store equipment and software, you can probably give employees more freedom when it comes to serving and delighting customers.

Get help if necessary Recognise that you don’t have to implement your training programme on your own. If teaching isn’t your speciality, see if you can delegate the task to an experienced manager or even an outside professional. There are plenty of trainers out there who specialise in retail and can create tailored programmes for your business. When it comes to the hardware and software in your business, see if you can get training from your vendors. Most solution providers provide training materials to customers to help them get the most out of the program, and others even have partners and resellers who can train clients on the solution.

Attracting talent… treat people with dignity and keep your brand positive

H

ardware Edition recently chatted to job hunters to find out how they experienced job hunting in the Hardware space. Frankly, we here horrified with the insights. Whether you are a people oriented organisation or not, talent acquisition and retention is vital to the success of any business. Good talent has a choice of where to go next – and in a talent short market, skilled employees who have the ability to deliver are an asset. Your brand is not only a consumer brand – you are an employer and maintaining a professional, ethical profile is vital.

Time invested – 6 hours, with travel. Outcome – opinion of this business is that they are probably not an employer that she would want to be associated with. Their lack of empathy toward a potential employee is shocking, their lack of HR decorum notable and the fact that a Marketing Director did not have the courtesy to conclude is concerning. Note: Sibongile is married to one of the buyers from a leading retailer… Wonder whether this affects his commitment to future business with them?

Why then are businesses engaging in – at best unorthodox, at the worst unethical – HR practices?

Sibs accepted an offer with a Manufacturer servicing the Hardware Sector – as a Marketing Manager.

From a sample of just over one-hundred, here are some of the stories that concern us… names have been changed to protect the confidentiality of the people involved.

Hardware Edition says: We followed up with the recruiter concerned, who said that Sibongile was one of three applicants who were treated in the same manner. “Whilst we can’t control how a client treats the applicant, our choice is to disengage when we experience this lack of regard. Frankly, their company is now a source of talent for us – active headhunting for passive talent. Disregard of people permeates a business and if potential new staff is treated like this, you can rest assured that there is discontent in the business” said the recruiter

Hardware Edition Question: • Was this employer just looking for information from people at the level of Segment Marketing Manager within their opposition companies

• Did they even begin to consider the amount of time and effort that the recruiter had to extend in order to provide a relevant short-list of three candidates

• Does the employer know that a potential staff member may also be a customer of theirs

#1 – Sibongile (R800k per annum) was approached to apply for a role in the Hardware sector as a Segment Marketing Manager. She took the time to complete the required paperwork, meet with a recruiter for a screening interview, and provide the necessary supporting documents (including transcripts and copies of pay-slips). She was called for an interview with the Head of HR and the Marketing Director. The Head of HR did not bother to show up for the interview; and the Marketing Director did not bother to revert with feedback – to neither the applicant or to the recruiter!

page 86 | Hardware Edition 2018

• Does the employer consider the damage to their brand when they treat job-seekers in this manner

• Does this practice align with the company core values? What would the comment of the Managing Director be if he was made aware of this kind of misconduct from HR? ...and equally important – what would the global partner say if they were made aware of the opinion of three senior marketing experts within the Hardware sector

If you take into consideration the opinion of the recruiter, the applicants and their sharing of this experience there will be a negative perception surrounding the company.

#2 – Ricky (R400k per annum) was approached – also by an agency – for a Regional Sales Manager’s role. The agency has a global footprint. He worked through a recruiter – provided paperwork, followed process and was invited for an interview. The interview was subsequently cancelled, and no feedback provided. Comment from the recruiter: “Yes, this client approached us, provided a brief, we serviced accordingly, signed terms of business, negotiated a discounted rate – invested about 40 hours on three roles; scheduled two interviews – and the client “changed their mind”. “It’s annoying when a client wastes time like this, but it happens, said the recruiter. “I don’t think that it occurs to them that they are wasting time, and that they are compromising another business – in this case – the recruiter – who cannot have an ROI under such circumstances. And this was at senior level. It gets worse – store/floor staff attend interviews – and either get an offer or never hear from the business again. Is it old-fashioned to expect interview feedback?

Applicant: Make sure that when you are looking, that the agency has the full job specification and permission to refer; which in my case, they did. Then, put it down to experience and understand that even the most ‘qualified’ HR managers can’t always be bothered to follow up. Annoying, but it is what it is. Hiring company: #1 – we changed our mind and decided to work with a recruiter who gave us a 75% discount! That’s why we cancelled the interview – (Perhaps you should have negotiated BEFORE briefing…)? #2 – HR Manager can’t comment, as the Marketing Director has not yet (six weeks later) provided feedback on the interviews!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Watch out for our article “How to become an Employer of Choice”

Comments: Hardware Edition: Recruiters work on risk and on a performance based income. This does not give companies the right to abuse their services. Do manufacturers think that recruiters have a row of top-talent just waiting to be referred when a new vacancy comes up? Are they aware of the time and effort that it takes to find the right candidate – skills, profile, experience, track record, references, culture? Recruiter: There are twenty eight steps in the recruitment process, eight of which take place prior to the introduction. It would be great if companies would firm up on hiring requirements before engaging our services. Not only is it a waste of time, but we have to manage our reputation with applicants who don’t understand the lack of HR professionalism that we deal with.
