Industry Interaction / Guest Lectures explain that there are three types of companies in today's IT industry – Service Organizations (Indian Companies and MNCs), Product Companies (Very few Indian Companies and MNCs) and Niche Companies focusing on one industry (E.g.: Companies providing services in ecommerce industry).
CII Sponsorship: TAPMI was the Associate Co-Sponsor at the EDU Summit 2013, sponsored by the CII, Northern Region held on May 29 at Chandigarh. Promotional materials of the institute were distributed to all the participants.
He gave a few examples of each of these companies mentioning TCS, Infosys etc in the service organization; Microsoft, Intel etc in Product Companies. He also said that many product companies have big ideas and small budgets and hence they outsource such businesses to India. The third type of companies is Niche Companies who focus on one industry and develop IT services and products for that Industry only. These include flipkart.com, jabong.com etc which deals in ecommerce. He also mentioned that these days few companies come to India to learn from us.
"Career for an MBA in IT” by Mr. Prince Jayakumar, India Head Recruitment, CGI
Mr. Prince Jayakumar then spoke about different roles available starting with the bread and butter of traditional industry which is management of a new service or product which translates in to a project management assignment. MBAs are recruited for delivery management of these projects. The second type of role is Project Programmer role which includes transition management and execution etc. The third is Business Development role. It is getting difficult to acquire businesses as the competition is increasing day by day. The large deals of more than $ 1 billion have to be studied well. Companies need Financial Engineers to calculate the finances needed and how should they be funded and once integrated, marketing managers to manage these large accounts. The fourth type of role is a Product Management role where in a manager has to handle all the aspects of a product. The fifth type of role is Partner Management role which includes looking after or maintaining relations with a channel partner who is doing business for you in some other country. Apart from these, there are many roles emerging in new technology sectors like ecommerce, educational sector etc.
In today's world, when IT has become inevitable in business, it is very important to know the role of IT in businesses and how an MBA graduate can carve a successful career in IT. TAPMI witnessed the presence of Mr. Prince Jayakumar, India Head – Recruitment, CGI. CGI is the 6th largest software services company in the world. It had a revenue of nearly 10billion dollar in 2012 and employs 70000 people in 40 countries. Their services include IT, business consulting and outsourcing. He started his talk by posing two questions to the students namely, " what are the different roles available for an MBA graduate in IT and how are you planning to shape your career as an MBA in IT". He also mentioned the challenges IT industry is facing today like constant technology changes among others. He moved on to
He then moved on by asking to students "What are we trying to solve in IT industry? How will our presence make a difference? What are the new ideas you are going to bring into the industry? Will your role be substantial in building new technology, new business, and new paradigms in the
5
IT industry?". He gave a contrasting example of Vineet Nair, HCL Technologies Founder who was the first one to come up with an idea of using IT infrastructure in India and tools like Facebook etc which are not technologies but just a business case or approach. He said that one should not look for jobs in IT industry, rather one should look for solutions and jobs will automatically follow.
associated with GVR Infra since September 2011 as VP and Head - HR and has been instrumental in driving people related policies and processes. Prior to joining GVR, he worked with Indian Airforce, Unilever PLC, Air Deccan, Kingfisher airlines, and GMR Group. Mr. Chandrakumar briefed the audience on organization structure and its importance in it being a clear mandate on the roles, responsibilities and deliverables expected from employees in an organization. He discussed the motivation factors in an organization. An in-depth insight of the Performance Management Process (PMP) and its objectives was given. PMP brings in performance based culture along with ensuring alignment of organization goals with business, functional and individual goals. This provides clarity of what the organization desires to achieve. PMP leverages self-development through training. This evolution process helps in understanding individuals, in determining the skillsets an individual needs to imbibe, thus helping in keeping out competency gaps. Values are integrated by linking it to results. PMP also provides a platform for a periodic performance dialogue and feedback. The significance of PMP is thus realized for the basic survival of an organization.
After talking a little about the changes in the way people work in IT - from tables to cubicles to hot seats to virtual desktops, he then moved on to explain the bigger role of India in development of IT and what all changes should happen in India. He mentioned that the outlook of Indian IT has always been to destroy the ecosystem and that we fail to understand the basic difference between competition and ecosystem. He said that we should grab the opportunity if we have benefited by it because our partners will also need our help one day and that is how ecosystem is developed. He concluded by saying that the Indian IT services have grown to such a volume that they need to think about the future now. Indian IT needs to differentiate itself in front of the world competition, spend more on innovation, apply reverse brain drain to attract the product companies to come and do business here, develop and launch more products.
Mr. Chandrakumar touched upon the goal setting process. The speaker also threw light on other aspects like Performance Planning, PMP format and methodology, Outcome, Eligibility & criteria for Promotions, Feedback Process, Grievance mechanism and PMP dialogue feedback. Mr. Chandrakumar concluded his speech by explaining the PIP process. It is a constant review process to ensure employees perform better, upto the desired level. He appreciated the active participation of the audience and the thought provoking questions asked by them. Thus, the guest lecture ended successfully with students gaining a greater knowledge on Performance Management.

Challenges and Future Trends in IT Consulting
Delhi, Melbourne and Saudi Arabia. A proud alumnus of TAPMI (1997 batch), he addressed the gathering on 'Careers in Consulting'. Consulting, according to Mr. Mullick, broadly includes reusability of learning, an opportunity to meet people, making improvements, taking up new challenges sometimes even with limited knowledge, working in teams, fast delivery, high quality output and growing careers. The right attitude and hard work are few of the major requirements for a consultant. Citing his experience over various roles along his career path, he reckons that there is always something new to learn in every new role taken up. Mr. Mullick discussed the various skills a consultant is expected to have. Being smart, articulate, research oriented - thorough with data and analysis and thus investing in oneself is a mandatory. Being sales oriented helps in networking; being good at number crunching, having an eye for detail, communication skills and being methodical and organized are skills well appreciated in a consultant. He touched upon the basic behaviour that needs to be demonstrated in today's corporate world. Being people first, a team person, taking up new challenges, taking ownership, being responsive, down to earth and most importantly being ethical are few facets which is expected from a professional. He also highlighted that it is not just an individual's professional responsibility to do a good job, but it is a morale responsibility too.
TAPMI organised a Video Conferencing Lecture by senior executives of Actuant Technologies, India - Mr. Varun Vijay Rao (Managing Director), Mr. Sagar Murthy (Assistant Director) and Ms. Ivy Lenet Saldanha (Director, Human Resource & Admin) on the topic - "Challenges and Future Trends in IT Consulting".
Ms. Anupama Rammohan shares her views on Competency Mapping Ms. Anupama Rammohan is the Director of HR, IMS Health who has more than 16 years experience in HR with specialization in the areas of Talent Acquisition & Management, Talent Engagement & Management as well as Learning & Development. She was responsible, at Theorem, for steering the growth of the company from 500 employees in 2010 to 1100 in 2013 at the time of her leaving Theorem.
Mr. Mullick gave a brief insight upon the career movement in consulting. Analyst and Consultant roles are generally in line with experience below three years. Similarly, Consultants and Assistant Managers usually have three to six years' experience and are assigned as small project leads. Higher up – Principal Consultants and Managers with six to nine years' experience are assigned as project managers. Managing Consultants and Senior Managers serve as service line or regional leaders or program managers; Associate Directors and Directors have expertise in their practice and are usually regional heads. The speaker rounded off his speech by mentioning that at a B-school like TAPMI, its students are expected to always be at the forefront of team exercises, volunteering for tasks, eager to present output of team, good at preparing reports and documents, digging deep to research for output, staying connected with fellow team members, professors, industry and other B-school students. Thus, the first session of the TAPMI Guest Lecture Series 201314 concluded with students gaining a deeper understanding of the consulting industry and requirements of a successful career in it.
Ms. Anupama Rammohan during her interactive session
Ms. Anupama spoke about competency mapping with the use of a few activities and practical examples. She started off by talking about the most opulent ship and what was called the acme of comfort at that time - The Titanic. She mentioned the reasons why the tragedy occurred which rooted to ignorance of safety and arrogance of the decision makers. She used the iceberg as an analogy to explain Competency, which is defined as the skill, knowledge and behaviour to perform the job at hand. Just like the iceberg, there are other traits of a person which are
7
not visible on the surface, such as attitude, religion and physical ability. Analogically, the part of iceberg above water is known as functional competency - easy to validate and easy to access, while the part below water is behavioural competency.
Ms Anupama believes and recommends conducting competency mapping for any industry and mentioned that the cost of not conducting such an activity will result in a loss of 3-4 times to company. This was only the monetary loss while there were other latent costs involved in it too. The session ended with a busy round of questions and answers.
Ms. Anupama then went on to explain the difference between the two types of competency, after which the four steps of competency mapping were discussed along with an activity. The first step was job description, the objective of it, how to prepare one and the need for it in the company's perspective. She quoted “without a job description, it is like going somewhere without a map”. A sample JD was circulated in the class. The second step to competency mapping is a job element analysis, and followed by drawing a competency mapping. She demonstrated on how a competency map is drawn and the result of this was used to make competency based selections.
