G anapathy S chool was started as the S anskrit school in the year 1 8 7 0 in the verandah of S ri U mamaheswar temple , G anapathy T emple R oad , M angalore and later converted as a modern school . L ater the school was shifted from U mame heswar temple to the present campus in 1 9 1 5 .
T he campus is in the heart of the city with 2 acres of land with a heritage building . M ore than 1 5 0 0 students were studying in the school in any academic year with classes from I to S . S . L . C . S chool . the S tructure is of gothic style and the materials used are local materials like laterites , redo x ide , bricks , etc . B ecause of G lobali z ation , the toy - making of C hannapatna has been faced with competition . . D ue to this , the number of craftsmen is diminishing . ‘ V arna S aale ’ is the school for underprivileged children along with the design in stitute . T he main motto is to educate children and train them to develop and con serve the art of T oy making . T he children here will have an open schooling e x peri ence , learning with toys and developing skills on crafts and art . I t is to E X P L O R E the possibilities of toy making , to L E A R N and understand the ideas and techni q ues passed from generations and to C R E A T E toys that provide meaning as well as jus tice to the craft of toy making in C hannapatna . I t is a pantheon for learning for those interested in this craft , all people from the village and also outsiders . I t is a place for the artisans to work , learn and improve their skills . I t is supported by public spaces embracing the locals . the idea here is to create a user e x perience of disconnecting from the outside world and connect them inside a sperate world of E x ploring and creating . the building spreads as an element of the nature welcoming the visitors . C hick pet and all the other markets surrounding it is also famous for the ancient temples and mos q ues . S ince many I T and other companies , institutions have raised up people started migrating from different places of K arnataka and other states popula tion has been increased and shortage of space for shelter . so the idea of roof housing came up. “ S O O R U ” which means shelter in K annada . T he idea here is to create a roof top village within a city .
T he units come above the second , third and fourth
story e x isting structures . E ach unit has been provided with its own identity and clustered closely providing close neighborhood which creates bonding among themselves . U nits are placed around with a
common space or a front
yard acts like a junction , provided with a resting or sitting space called “ katte ” which is mainly founded in villages . T he katte centered at the common space acts like pause points and the node for discussions . T he terrace space of each unit is provided with solar panels , hence the units are also eco - friendly .
