SATURDAY CLUB By Adonis
Welcome to the library. I like the library because it is quiet and peaceful.
At Saturday Club inside we paint, color, and glitter on paper. We color with crayons and markers onto paper.
When you go to the library you read books. Also you pick just right books for your independent reading or books that you read with friends and teachers. When you just start Harlem Academy you first start to read easy books. Then the teacher sees if you are reading harder books than the first time you started to read at Harlem Academy. Then they give you a level for your independent reading book. I have a reading level and the higher your level is the harder the book is. When you are in the library you do not make noise. There are people reading peacefully and independently. There are times when you have to be silent because others maybe working on a test. Sometimes the library is not quiet. You should hear it on Family Game Night.
We go outside and we play kickball, football, basketball, and soccer at the park. The park we go to is called Central Park. After we play we go inside and wash our hands in the bathroom. Then we go in the first grade room, and we sit and we eat. We eat Subway sandwiches and have chocolate cookies for dessert. Saturday Club is a fun place. Everyone can come, if they go to Harlem Academy. Saturday Club is a fun program. You should go every Saturday.
RUNNING THE HARLEM MEER By Akale Running the Harlem Meer is lots of fun. We do it for P.E. We skip, jog, run, and walk around the Meer. First and second grades run the Meer at P.E. When we are about to run the Meer, the teachers choose a partner for the kids. The teachers have different places to be when we run the Meer. Mr. Ebling is at the front. Mrs. Dillon and Mr. Francis are in the middle. Ms. Bailey is at the back. We all have a good time.
MORNING GAMES By Nicholas In second grade we earn stars. Stars mean minutes of game time. You earn stars when you do something good. We get more game time then! In statue freeze you have to freeze. Then the person who said freeze takes your place.
Ms. Parker teaches third grade. She was my teacher in first grade but then the other first grade teacher (Ms. Davis) came back from having her baby. Ms. Parker teaches a lot of subjects. One of them is math. She talks about multiplication and fractions. She also teaches writing. She talks about spelling.
In Dr. Snooze, the doctor gets to stick his or her tongue out at the class to put them to sleep. One person goes out of the room and tries to figure out who is the doctor.
FAMILY GAME NIGHT By Madison There will be lots of games at Family Game Night. I like to play Monopoly Electronic Banking. It will be at the Harlem Academy and the games will be in the beautiful classrooms. It will also be on Friday night.
The teacher’s helper decides which game to play. The teacher yells the game, softly. We work to earn stars each day.
Some kids’ favorite games are Apples to Apples and Headbandz. Games are the most important thing at Family Game Night.
THE FAMOUS MS. PARKER By AJ
At Family Game Night we will have pizza and juice. The food and drinks start in the middle of family game night.
There is a person at Harlem Academy I think you should know. Her name is Ms. Parker and she is cool! Ms. Parker is a teacher here at Harlem Academy. We are glad to have her here at Harlem Academy. She’s also a parent! Guess what! Her own son is in her class!
Family Game Night is really fun! In the middle of class we played games that helped improve our work like multiplicationflash. That also makes her gracious. That makes her gracious because it shows her what we need to learn. Ms. Parker is a fun teacher. 2
CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS By Jayde
spit water together! Then not together, and then at each other!
You will have a really good time at a birthday
The show was fantastic and really fun! You should go to the Big Apple Circus. It will be no mistake, ha ha! It would be fun for your family to see it.
at Harlem Academy. You can do many fun things while celebrating a birthday. First everybody begins to sing Happy Birthday to the birthday person. Sometimes we make up our own version. Next once everybody has sung Happy Birthday, we share compliments about that person. On Lia’s birthday we gave a compliment about Lia. She liked it. Now is the time when we eat. On your cupcake you may have the choice of M&Ms, sprinkles, cookies, and more.
DANCE CHINA! By Delali
I taught Yealie how to get on the monkey bars. And Yealie learned how to get up there! BIG APPLE FUN! By Julian The Big Apple Circus is a spectacular act. Most people think it is in a big apple tent.
The second grade has gone to a dance China show. Here are some of the things we experienced. The first act we saw was the handkerchief dance. Dancers in red and yellow uniforms came out with red and gold handkerchiefs. They did remarkable tricks! They even spun them on their fingers! They were perfectly balanced!
Everyone is happy and laughing there. Then the show started and everyone got silent and everyone got popcorn. Crunchy popcorn! Everything was great. The acts were amazing. But we saw something we thought was about to fall on us! It was weird and sparkly! Once everybody has eaten we all play a game on the rug. We’ll play special things like Coseeki, statue freeze, and Dr. Snooze. Don’t you wish you had your birthday at Harlem Academy?
MONKEY BARS! By Ti-Shauna
Jayde and I were laughing. We saw the third graders Andrew, Nicholas, and Miles watching the circus too. They were laughing too. Then there was something weird, the grandma clown pulled up a little boy and handed him a water bottle. Then it gets weirder. They
Monkey bars are fun. Monkey bars are also scary and exciting.
The next act was the Sword Dance … one of the Chinese men had a shining blue sword and one of them had white long sleeves. It looked like they were “fighting” and it was looking like they were doing Kung Fu! The third dance we saw was a fan dance. Two girls in blue feather looking dresses came out with pink fans and in a peacock style. They made all kinds of shapes with their fans.
At recess Yealie, Jayde, Lia, Julian, Akale, Delali, Madison, and I went on the monkey bars. At athletics we also played on the monkey bars. Delali, Yealie, Jayde, Julian, Lia, Madison, and I played on the monkey bars.
The last act of all was the ribbon dance. They swirled the ribbons so nicely, it looked like real swirls on TV. 3
HOW TO PLAY BLOKUS By Matthew This story is going to be about Blokus. If read it, you might like the game. You must know the players when you play Blokus. There has to be two to four players to play. There has to be at least two players to play. The game has pieces. There are many pieces. The pieces are in different colors. The colors are green, red, blue, and yellow. When you play, you can be the obstacle. You can block someone. MAKE YOUR OWN PLAY By Lenny
I love playing Blokus at choice. JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER By Manny
You are going to read a story about plays.
Jazz at Lincoln Center is only once in a life time in Second Grade. It’s not tropical jazz. It’s not smooth jazz. It’s just jazz.
Making plays is fun. There are a lot of plays. Each play has a name. My favorites are Sister Act, Spider-Man, and Time Machine. There are different actors for different plays. Manny was in Sister Act. AJ was in Spider-Man. I was in Wonder Land. AJ made all the plays up. All of the plays should have at least four different scenes. For example a scene could be in the summer or in a pit. A setting is just like a scene but the only thing different is that a setting is where the scene takes place. For example the monkey bars could be a scene or the tree house. You should try making a play. It is fun!
We all get set up, getting ready and packing up with our coats and lunches. We get into our group and head out. We are excited. FLIGHT AND FANCY By Yealie Airplane games are amusing. You can use your imagination! At recess, Delali, Madison, TiShauna, and I play airplane games! In the game Madison, Ti-Shauna, and I are the admired Simon sisters and sometimes the dazzling Gomez sisters! Delali is the mom and the pilot of our plane. We pretend to go on tours like Disney and on Disney cruise ships. We dazzle the crowd! We pretend to perform in L.A., Las Vegas, and the Bahamas! We get to sit in special seats. We are the VIPs, especially at the Kids Choice Awards! 4
We walk inside Jazz at Lincoln Center. I see statues, posters, and paintings. We walk inside of the theater. The show is starting. I get comfortable in my seat and begin to watch. Solid jazz plays as background music. The rhythm gets to me while I tap my feet. They tell us about Duke Ellington and his piano-playing style. His smooth and nice jazz play “Take the A-Train.” My favorite song is a silly song that one man said was about a Doll called Eliza Jane.
