We challenge high performers to reach even higher. Over the course of 8 years at Harlem Academy, a student will read 1,400 books, write for 3,000 hours, master mathematics through algebra I, and conduct hundreds of hands-on science experiments. Even with our extended day, we offer this at 66% of the cost per student of traditional NYC independent schools.

P R O G R A M H I G H LI G HT S From Stonehenge to Warhol In the new art curriculum, lower school students explore a range of artists, mediums, and techniques through hands-on study. At each end-of-year art show, they act as docents of their own work produced in the styles of influential artists they have studied. Frequent visits to the Met connect classroom work to the art at the museum.
All the World’s a Stage Our performance-based unit draws students into the works of Shakespeare. Acting out the lines gives access to the language and nuance for students in grades six, seven, and eight. In May, two teams competed at the Classic Stage Company’s 2013 Shakespeare Smackdown. Despite being the only middle school participants in the competition, one of our teams earned second place.
Examining Assumptions A new social issues reading and writing unit introduces grade-four students to critical analysis skills. They learn that text is not neutral by comparing authors’ perspectives and exploring issues of religion, gender, and culture.
A Focus on Academic Vocabulary The updated vocabulary curriculum incorporates the most effective teaching strategies: going deeper on fewer words, focusing on key academic words, and delving into shades of meaning. Students leave Harlem Academy with a better understanding of essential academic vocabulary and higher retention, positioning them for success in secondary school.
Trips and Academic Partners From astronomers and architects to actors and artists, a wide range of professionals supplement the classroom curriculum with advanced insights and practical applications of the material. A 3-day trip to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute also helps to broaden their horizons, as do regular visits to cultural resources around the city.

$2.6 Million Raised for Scholarships Individuals, foundations, and corporations gave nearly $2.6 million to the school. Thanks to this support, Harlem Academy was able to provide full-need scholarships ensuring every admitted student could afford to attend. Four Stars from Charity Navigator Harlem Academy received Charity Navigator’s highest rating for the second year in a row. We are one of only 15 private schools in the nation to earn the coveted four-star rating for fiscal responsibility, management efficiency, transparency, and adherence to nonprofit best practices.
