FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

So much has happened in the 16 years since we opened Harlem Academy’s doors and welcomed our very first families. Our inaugural class graduated in 2012, navigated the opportunities and challenges of secondary school, and this spring will become Harlem Academy’s first college graduates. The school has grown alongside those first students, and we’ve watched with pride as, class by class, our alumni have gone on to demonstrate leadership beyond these walls. Throughout it all, one thing has remained constant: our mission.

Harlem Academy drives equity of opportunity for promising students, guiding them to thrive at the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world. Lighting a path to opportunity with the dedicated support of families, teachers, and donors is just part of the equation. Motivated, hard-working students is the other. Harlem Academy students push themselves, take on challenges, and strive for excellence – and this past year proved their talent yet again. The most recent graduating class continued the success of classmates who came before them, with 100% matriculating to selective secondary schools. As I watch our current students walk in the footsteps of our graduates, I see the same drive, the same love of learning. It brings me joy and immense pride to see students digging into challenging books or excitedly solving accelerated math problems. Asking tough questions and challenging their own assumptions. It proves that raising the academic ceiling for promising children pays off. Thank you to every member of the Harlem Academy community – students, parents, teachers, and supporters – who have made this past year such a success. Together, we can ensure that the next 16 years make an even greater impact. Sincerely,

Vincent A. Dotoli

WHY HARLEM ACADEMY?

We are often asked why Harlem Academy focuses on promising students. A recent study by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, “Born to Win, Schooled to Lose,” sought to address that very question: If a student is already promising, won’t he or she be fine regardless?

Our results show the impact of this approach: Harlem Academy students gain 16 percentile points on nationally standardized tests by eighth grade, graduating at the 90th percentile. This growth expands students’ opportunities and broadens their horizons, paving a path to college and, ultimately, to the fullest realization of their potential.

And the answer was a resounding “no.” The research looked at the trajectory for promising students from kindergarten through age 25 and found that income defined student outcomes at every stage, with particularly staggering losses taking place by eighth grade. High-performing kindergartners from low-income families are half as likely to graduate from college or earn a high wage than their more affluent, low-performing peers. Meanwhile, wealthier students with lower academic potential enjoy an upward trajectory throughout the education-tocareer pipeline.

These findings underscore the importance of Harlem Academy’s mission. In fact, our role in inspiring the research is recognized in the study’s acknowledgments. (For more on our impact, see “Harlem Academy Beyond Its Walls,” page 15.) As the only independent elementary and middle school in Manhattan focusing on promising, low-income students, Harlem Academy combats these inequities through selective admissions, a rigorous curriculum, and full-need scholarships for every admitted child.

Harlem Academy alumni have closed the college-access gap with high-achieving, wealthier students. 100% of students in the most recent class entered four-year colleges, with students matriculating to Cornell, Dartmouth, Fordham, New York University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this year. HARLEM ACADEMY BEYOND ITS WALLS

Harlem Academy is dedicated to sharing successful strategies and best practices, and publication is a powerful and far-reaching way to extend our impact beyond the school’s walls. Our first article was published in a national journal in 2016. Over the past two years, six new articles have been accepted for publication, reaching more than 300,000 educators and school leaders across the country. “(Re)Explore NYC” details how Harlem Academy’s advisory unit of the same name empowers students to design – then take – their own daylong field trip to develop skills like collaboration, problem-solving, and help-seeking (AMLE Magazine, Spring 2020).

“Gamifying Vocabulary” describes a vocabulary game developed at Harlem Academy that has driven successful results in an area where there is widespread inequity across the country for students from different socioeconomic brackets (Literacy Today, Sept/Oct 2018).

“No More Assemblies” examines our strategy for developing meaningful, long-term partnerships with outside professionals to set the stage for deep engagement and authentic skill development (AMLE Newsletter, Nov 2018).

“The Power of Common Language” explains our use of a school creed and schoolwide behavior expectations to develop strong habits that position students for sustained growth (Educational Leadership, Sept 2018).

“Empowering Great Teachers: Strategies for Successful Teacher-Driven Curriculum Development” shares the school’s approach to curriculum development, with a focus on defining instructional needs, ensuring teacher readiness, following a multi-year process, and anticipating challenges (Principal Leadership, Oct 2018).

“Preparing Students for the Transition to High School” delves into Harlem Academy’s innovative program, High School Week, which readies eighth graders for the workload, schedule, and expectations of secondary school (AMLE Magazine, April 2018).

WELCOME TO THE BOARD We enthusiastically welcome Elizabeth McHenry to Harlem Academy’s board of trustees. Elizabeth is an associate professor of English at New York University, where she teaches American and African American literature. Elizabeth is the author of “Forgotten Readers: Recovering the Lost History of African American Literary Societies” (Duke University Press, 2002), which chronicles the history of black readers and their organized literary activities from 1830-1940. She began her career as a high school teacher at Phillips Academy and has served on the faculty at the U.S. Naval Academy, the College of the Holy Cross, and the University of Texas, Austin. She holds a bachelor’s from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in English and American literature from Stanford University.

A PERMANENT HOME Harlem Academy is building a permanent campus at 655 St. Nicholas Avenue, located in the heart of the communities it serves. Our new 28,500-square-foot building will double the school’s size to 240 students and allow us to add a kindergarten, a second section in each middle school grade, an expanded library to match our extraordinary reading culture, and a large outdoor space for sports and play. Our new home will offer a vibrant and enriching environment for our students and ensure a lasting pathway for promising children to realize their potential. The capital campaign, Future Leaders: The Capital Campaign for Harlem Academy, has crossed the 90% threshold toward the $31 million budget. We are on track for a spring 2020 groundbreaking with projected completion in July 2021. Please reach out to our chief development officer, Terry Frankenberger, by emailing tfrankenberger@harlemacademy.org or calling 212-348-2600 ext. 306 to learn more about
