FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

This past year has been one of unprecedented challenges, and I’m extremely proud of the way we have rallied together as a strong community of teachers, students, parents, and supporters in the realization of our mission. When 2020 began, we were just starting to hear about COVID-19. None of us could have imagined how quickly it would change the way our teachers teach and our students learn. In early spring, we made a successful pivot to remote learning, continuing the same rigorous, engaging instruction that characterizes Harlem Academy, but in a new format. We provided expanded financial aid to families whose income was impacted by the pandemic and ensured that our students had the critical resources and support they needed. Despite the challenges, our students have excelled, demonstrating determination and resilience. By fall, the class of 2020 had joined a community of Harlem Academy alumni thriving at top secondary schools, and our current students had jumped into the new school year ready and eager to learn – even though it still had to be at a distance. Our broader community jumped in too. Supporters rose to meet the moment when we had to cancel our spring benefit and fill the critical fundraising gap. They also paved the way for a new school building at 655 St. Nicholas Avenue. We broke ground in August 2020 and are on track to complete construction in the fall of 2021. As we transition into the next phase for our school, I know we will continue to confront new challenges. But after seeing our community in action this past year, I have no doubt that we will meet every one of them – together. Sincerely,

Vincent A. Dotoli

CARING FOR OUR COMMUNITY: COVID-19 RESPONSE

As the pandemic deepens inequities in access to quality education, our mission to drive equity of opportunity is more important than ever. The unprecedented challenges we faced as COVID-19 accelerated in the spring required a carefully planned but nimble response. We focused on safety, academic growth, wellness, and family partnership. Most students learned from home, with accommodations for students to learn on-site as family circumstance required it. HARLEM ACADEMY’S SIX-PART PLAN

1

Laptops and school supplies provided to every child

2

Expanded financial aid for families whose income has been impacted by COVID-19

3

Hosted onsite pods to accommodate families who needed childcare, with protocols including temperature screenings, mandatory masks, social distancing, and facility upgrades

4

Academic rigor in a remote format through engaging, interactive live classes plus guided independent practice in math and reading

5

Social and emotional wellness support through weekly individual check-ins by teachers and advisors, sessions with our counselor, meditation sessions, and community meetings

6

Frequent communication with families on the school’s COVID-19 response, opportunities for support, and regular updates on student progress

HARLEM ACADEMY IS COMMITTED TO THE SAFETY OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS AND TO MAKING SURE THAT STUDENTS STAY HIGHLY ENGAGED WHILE LEARNING FROM HOME. MY HUSBAND AND I ARE GRATEFUL THAT OUR DAUGHTER GOES TO SCHOOL HERE. ABRAVI ABOTSI, SIXTH GRADE PARENT

A study by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the
