2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT

A MESSAGE FROM

Brianna Turner-Douglas, pictured at Harlem Academy’s 2014 Commencement, currently attends the Peddie School where she is already involved in soccer, Multicultural Alliance, and yearbook.

The Board Chairman Brianna Turner-Douglas, a member of our third graduating class, currently attends the Peddie School where she is already involved in soccer, Multicultural Alliance, and yearbook. She recently wrote:

“Harlem Academy prepared me for boarding school. They taught me to be independent, creative, and surrounded me with teachers who were a real source of support. Thank you, Harlem Academy.” Low-income students are dramatically underrepresented at top universities, with only 9% of students at tier-1 institutions coming from the bottom half of the income distribution. Harlem Academy gives these students a shot to overcome this disadvantage.

Because of the population we serve, 97% of Harlem Academy students need significant scholarship support. The median award is $23,000 toward a tuition of $25,000, so the school only exists with your support. On behalf of the board of trustees, staff, and students, I thank you for making this transformational educational experience possible.

We fill a critical gap. Good charter, public, and Catholic schools move struggling and average students to a minimum level of proficiency. Gifted and talented programs only admit students who are already testing at the 90th percentile or higher. Harlem Academy moves bright, motivated students from above average to excelling, setting them on a path for success at top secondary schools and universities. Our first three classes of graduates have earned $890,000 in annual scholarships to many top schools, including Chapin, Hotchkiss, Riverdale, and Spence.

Sincerely,

DAVID B. PETERSON Board Chairman

A MESSAGE FROM

The Head of School On a gray Saturday morning last winter, our middle school history teacher and I rolled up to the main building at Hotchkiss. We planned to visit with Mariah Bell, a recent Harlem Academy graduate and first-year student. It was raining, but Mariah was right there to usher us inside. “I’ll show you a couple of places we spend our free time, then we can grab lunch.” After years of introducing Mariah to my world—the culture of Harlem Academy, a class trip to my old boarding school, and wilderness challenges that align with my love for the outdoors—it was very clear that she was now sharing her space with me.

Mariah Bell ‘13 and Sean Robertson, Harlem Academy middle school history teacher, pose for a photo at Hotchkiss. Sean and Vinny stopped at Hotchkiss as part of a road trip to check in with Harlem Academy alumni at boarding schools in New England.

known each other for years. They were funny, thoughtful, and engaging, with an obvious connection to and admiration for Mariah. After 10 minutes with Mariah and her friends, I knew that she was in the right place and thriving. Our goal is to prepare bright, motivated students from underserved communities for success at top secondary schools. We always check in with our graduates to see how they are doing. You can look at grades, hear from advisors, or talk to parents. But on that day, we left Hotchkiss with proof.

We saw cutting-edge science labs, the 87,000 volume library, and more before grabbing our lunch trays and settling into a relatively quiet table in the main dining hall to continue our conversation. Just as we were taking our first bites, three other students squeezed in to join us with smiles, friendly greetings, and questions of their own. “This is supposed to be our opportunity to talk to Mariah,” I silently griped, “I guess we’re doing a group interview.”

Sincerely,

But it was great. One boy from California, a girl from Hong Kong, and another from Indiana, all chatted with our NYC crew like we had

Lower School Reading Our grade-four reading curriculum challenges students to use higher-order thinking skills to analyze literature, research topics, and learn analogy-based vocabulary. Students are able to determine when to apply particular strategies and gain a sense of ownership for their reading comprehension. As part of the Schools That Can National Forum, 20 visiting school leaders had the opportunity to see this in action. They observed a literary discussion of the book “Esperanza Rising, touching on themes of class, family, and love.

Character Development In the last year we continued to strengthen our character education program for all grades. We piloted a program called High School Week that challenged grade-eight students with the responsibilities and workload of secondary school. Prompted by research showing that even worrying about being stereotyped can have a measurable impact on student performance, we introduced an advisory unit about mitigating stereotype threat to help students navigate the assumptions others might make about them.

Math and Reading Lab Small group work allowed faculty to further target instruction for students in need of enrichment or remediation. In math, we conducted the secondyear pilot of a weekly period focused on advanced problem solving for top math students and additional instruction in core topics for students in need of extra help. In reading, we piloted advanced reading groups as well as a group for students in need of additional practice.

Field Guides Teachers Sean Robertson and Allison Duarte continued to hone the curriculum they have developed for history and science, respectively. The classes center around trimester-long field guides, with depth of content and an emphasis on nonfiction reading and writing skills. Both shared best practices with a group of charter, public, and parochial school leaders from around the country, as part of the 2014 Schools That Can National Forum school tours.

In February 2014, we purchased a 20,000 square foot lot at 655 St. Nicholas Avenue that will eventually house Harlem Academy’s permanent home. Currently, the school rents space in the first floor of two apartment buildings. We have already expanded to three, non-contiguous storefronts, and there is limited opportunity for further growth. This move will allow Harlem Academy to better meet its mission by serving more students in expanded facilities. We will add a kindergarten and, over time, a second section of each grade, growing to serve 360 students. Located in Central Harlem, the new site is proximal to Harlem, the Bronx, and Washington Heights, the neighborhoods where most of our families reside. It has excellent access to public transit, including A, B, C, and D trains and numerous bus lines. Harlem Academy extends tremendous gratitude toward the donors listed below. Their gifts made the first steps toward a permanent home and the establishment of an endowment possible. The commitment and leadership they have shown help ensure the future of Harlem Academy and strengthen our ability to make a difference in the lives of our students and community.
