SWISS ALPS

Flims, Switzerland Just a short hop from Zurich (a pretty hour-and-a-half’s drive, to be precise), the Swiss Alpine resort of Flims is a feast for the senses. Think stunning scenery, beautiful mountain lakes, the 400m deep Rhine Gorge – known as Switzerland’s Grand Canyon – and the soaring peaks of UNESCO World Heritage Site the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Heading there with fellow walkers or mountain bikers? You’ll love the 250km of hiking trails and 330km of mountain bike routes. Planning just to sight-see? Flims is home to some of the world’s most spectacular landscapes and natural wonders. The region plays host to events throughout the summer season, including September’s famous ‘Flimserstein Alpabzug’, when the mountain cows are walked back down the valley from their lush pastures, accompanied by traditional music. It’s also one of few locations in the world where visitors can see how mountains are formed, with a clear line showing two separate tectonic plates coming together. Have we tempted you yet? Plan your trip to the region at www.flims.com/en

Feeling sporty? ATTACK THE RAPIDS Enjoy a quiet kayak down the river, but want to step it up a gear? Discover how fast your reactions are as the water pummels your canoe and the spray hits your face at Lee Valley White Water Centre, just outside London. This is your chance to tackle the actual course used in the 2012 Olympics. You can choose to master the white waters in a canoe, a hot dog (inflatable kayak) or hydrospeed (a cross between a float and a bodyboard). Or go for the white water raft experience, which is great for groups and parties. You’ll be kitted out in wetsuits, helmets and buoyancy aids, then introduced to your raft guide who’ll help you navigate the drops and eddies of the rapids. The raft can hold up to nine people, and if you want to stay for the weekend, camp or glamp in cosy cocoons and cabins at Lee Valley Campsite. Find out more at gowhitewater.co.uk

Little Shop of Horrors Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has announced its cast of Little Shop of Horrors, which is set to play at the theatre from August 3 to September 15. Marc Antolin and Jemima Rooper will play Seymour and Audrey, with Forbes Masson in the role of East Side florist Mr Mushnik. Matt Willis as sadistic dentist Orin, and US drag queen Vicky Vox as the plant, Audrey II. For the misfits of Skid Row, life is full of broken dreams and dead ends. But there’s hope on the horizon for flower shop assistant, Seymour, when he discovers a mysterious new plant (Audrey II) with killer potential. Director Maria Aberg says: “The figure of Audrey II represents chaos at the heart of the downtrodden, deeply conventional world of Skid Row. Fuelled by Seymour’s own wish for success she grows increasingly demanding, increasingly glamorous, and increasingly unreasonable, until she’s conquered the whole of New York.” Find out more at openairtheatre.com, which is also home to Dinosaur World Live from August 14 to September 9.
