Hever Castle & Gardens
A carpet of snowdrops will provide a floral trail for visitors to follow at Hever Castle & Gardens in Kent throughout February 2018. Around 70,000 snowdrop bulbs have been planted in the gardens over the past few years, including a mix of single and double snowdrops, interspersed with some unusual varieties. Visitors to the childhood home of Anne Boleyn can wrap up warm and enjoy a stroll through the extensive grounds, which were transformed by William Waldorf Astor at the turn of the 20th century. Head gardener Neil Miller says: “We’ve planted some exciting varieties in the last few years, including Galanthus Athenae, which is one of the earliest to flower.” The more energetic can also enjoy the Hever Lake Walk, which takes in the perimeter of the 38-acre lake. n Garden-only admission costs £14.50 for adults, £12.95 for seniors and a family ticket is £39.90. Find out more at hevercastle.co.uk
WIN A LUXURY OVERNIGHT STAY! Stunning five-star accommodation is located in the Astor and Anne Boleyn wings of Hever Castle, and one lucky GTW reader can win a luxury overnight stay for two. Our winner will stay in a feature double room with a full English or continental breakfast included in the prize. All the bedrooms are en-suite and individually styled, with some offering four-poster beds, roll top baths or walk-in showers. As well as an overnight stay and breakfast, our winner will also enjoy access to the castle and gardens during its opening hours. Outside of opening hours guests can enjoy access to some parts of the gardens. If bed and breakfast is made available on days when the castle and gardens are closed to the public, a private guided tour of the castle will be offered on the morning of the day of departure. THE CITY OF CAVES You wouldn’t expect to find a cave entrance in a busy shopping centre, but that’s exactly where you’ll discover the entrance to the City of Caves in Nottinghsam (www. nationaljusticemuseum.org.uk/venue/ city-of-caves). Buried beneath the shopping centre and the rest of the city is a labyrinth of more than 50 sandstone caves, telling the story of their history as a medieval tannery, homes for slum dwellers and bomb shelters in the Second World War. You can also head to Somerset to explore two famous underground attractions. At Cheddar Gorge (www.cheddargorge.co.uk) you can explore the caves, while if you’re after a more adrenaline-charged trip, head out into the Mendip Hills with a caving guide for a proper caving expedition. Wookey Hole (www.wookey.co.uk), meanwhile, is surrounded by all manner of myths and legends. Find out about the Witch of Wookey before exploring the Valley of the Dinosaurs, the 19th century Paper Mill and the Victorian Penny Arcade. Finally, in south Devon you’ll find the wonderful Kents Cavern, a UNESCO Global Geopark no less. This stunning natural cave, which dates back to prehistoric times, lies on the coastline in Torquay. It’s one of the most important Stone Age sites in Europe, with a history of more than 400 million years, and groups can travel back through time to the cave’s Neanderthal heyday. inaccessible by road or air, and you’re unlikely to ever be able to visit them unless you sail. Cruise lines are investing huge amounts of money cleverly downsizing their vessels so they’re fit to explore the narrower, lesser-experienced waterways of the world, such as the Amazon and the Chobe.

Doncaster Markets
Artists impression of the new Wool Market
Doncaster Markets are one of the finest traditional markets in the North of England. The market is a key retail attraction, offering over 400 stalls. Fishmongers are becoming a rare sight in modern towns but not in Doncaster; our specialist traders are only too happy to share their expertise with market shoppers, offering advice, suggestions and impromptu lessons in how to fillet a fish. When in season fresh game specialists sell rabbit, hare, venison and boar, and we have one of the few tripe stalls to be found in the area. Award winning butchers, sausage specialists and pie makers who have won a multitude of accolades between them. To end your shopping day, there are cosy cafes to enjoy homemade food. The historic Wool Market based in the market square will soon be undergoing a multimillion pound transformation. The new design will transform the market area into a vibrant and bustling location all week long and into the evenings. Whilst the transformation works take place, all our dedicated traders will still be open for business. Our diverse and vibrant market has something for everyone.
