NORTHAMPTONSHIRE

Rockingham Castle Photo: Alan Kenny, alankennyphotography.com

Under a mean and moody sky, striking Rockingham Castle cuts quite an imposing figure. Built on the instruction of William the Conqueror (with magnificent views across the Welland Valley this stronghold was crucial in helping William subdue his new kingdom), it’s been the family home of the Watson family for 450 years, and prior to their ownership was held by the crown. Very few homes have been continuously occupied for nearly 1,000 years, and today visitors can soak up the atmosphere and history of this fascinating building that’s been a royalist stronghold and a seat of government – with the Great Council of Rockingham held here in 1095. Over the many centuries Richard the Lion Heart’s been a visitor, as has Charles Dickens, who often performed in his own plays in the Long Gallery. And you can find out more about the castle’s rich past on a guided tour, which can be arranged for pre-booked groups by appointment (minimum group size is 20). Events are also held throughout the year, including the popular Rockingham International Horse Trials, from 18-20 May, 2018. ■ Find

in the train is the most fantastic experience. Travelling through the Canadian Rockies by train is an experience not to be missed. Many of the trains have these amazing observation carriages that offer panoramic views. Though my favourite foreign country to explore by rail is Switzerland. It’s breathtaking. I love the UK’s network of preserved railway lines. I’m involved with the Bluebell Railway in East Sussex, which runs between East Grinstead and Sheffield Park. I was even their fireman for a time! It offers a fantastic experience for groups, with special events all through the year. And it’s not alone, as the UK is rich in fantastic heritage railways. I love the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which cuts through some spectacular scenery, the East Lancashire Railway... the list is endless. I’m also a huge fan of steam excursions. I’ve actually been fortunate enough to sit in the driver’s seat at 70mph on the Flying Scotsman (exhilarating and terrifying in equal measures!). I live in Reigate and a steam train comes past at least once a week. It’s just wonderful to see.

Penshurst Place & Gardens

Set in the beautiful Weald of Kent, Penshurst Place & Gardens and its surrounding estate have stood on the banks of the river Medway since the 14th century, when the aweinspiring medieval Baron’s Hall was built as a country retreat for the Lord Mayor of London, Sir John De Pulteney. The Baron’s Hall, crowned by an original 60ft high chestnut beamed ceiling, is the jewel in Penshurst Place’s crown, and an unmissable sight for visitors to the ancestral home of the Sidney family. It’s easy to see why Penshurst Place has been the inspiration for many a literary scholar, including Ben Johnson and Philip Sidney, and more recently can be recognised as a filming location for many large and small scale television and film projects, including Anne of a Thousand Days, The Princess Bride, The Other Boleyn Girl and Wolf Hall. Used as a hunting lodge for King Henry VIII, Penshurst Place has a unique place in history. The house was gifted to the Sidney Family in 1552 by Edward VI, and has remained in their safe hands ever since, making it one of the oldest family-owned estates in England. The stately home with 11 acres of formal gardens separated into different themed ‘rooms’, can tailor tours to cover a variety of special interests. For groups with a horticultural interest, guided tours with the estate’s

Days out When it comes to the historic city of Lincoln, the answer is plenty...

city Lincoln was in Roman times, and tell its many stories – from its time as the Roman hill fort of Lindum Colonia to the secrets behind its medieval castle (home to the 1215 Magna Carta and the 1217 Charter

of the Forest), as well as its cathedral. We learned that the remains of Lindum Colonia, founded in the first century AD, can still be seen, and that the cathedral was once the world’s tallest building – until 1549 when the spire collapsed. We discovered centuries-old stone mason pranks in the form of hidden carvings (who knew there was such mischief to be made with stone!), and paid 20p to light up the famous Lincoln Imp. Despite the bitter temperatures it was one of the best mornings I’ve ever had and I now see the city in a totally different light.

At Legoland Windsor Resort in Berkshire, Ninjago World is proving ever-popular, offering interactive activities to test participants’ balance, agility, speed and creativity. Once the Ninjago character scenes have been completed, visitors can experience the first ever 4D Ride allowing them to really feel what it’s like to throw fire balls, shock waves, ice and lightening using nothing but their hands in a battle against snake tribes, skeleton ghosts and ultimately a giant serpent known as The Great Devourer. Then there are the countless Lego models to admire throughout the park, including two five foot tall guardian Dragons, many other exciting rides to enjoy, plus areas like Drench Towers and Castaway Camp.

My all-time favourite? A trip to Oberammergau in the Bavarian Alps in Germany. It was just fantastic back via the Heights of Abraham and found the two people waiting for us.
