JAPAN

Kumano Kodo The history of Japan’s mountainous Kumano Kodo region stretches back thousands of years. So far back, in fact, that its network of pilgrimage routes, which criss-cross the Kii Peninsula, are now registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Sacred Site. For more than 1,000 years, everyone from emperors and samurai warriors to aristocrats and priests have walked these trails, and today groups can follow in their footsteps thanks to specialist holiday provider Selective Asia. Its Echoes of Edo small group tour ventures into Kumano Kodo, with the company’s very own Andrew Tedman your guide for the duration. Japan was his home for 11 years, he has family in the Kumano Kodo region, and he knows his sushi from his sashimi, so you can spend a fascinating fortnight experiencing Japan’s legendary hospitality, rubbing shoulders with the locals and exploring the pilgrimage trails, as well as the gardens of Kanazawa, the foodie capital of Osaka, the city of Hiroshima and more. Selective Asia’s 14-day break to this fascinating region, from November 5, 2019, costs £4,350 (excluding international flights). Find out more at selectiveasia.com

The making of a militant

Coronation Street’s Sally Lindsay presented the BBC documentary

To coincide with the recent BBC One documentary Emmeline Pankhurst: The making of a militant, Marketing Manchester has produced a guide to visiting Emmeline’s Manchester. The documentary, which was presented by former Coronation Street actor Sally Lindsay, revealed the incredible story of the Suffragette leader who lived at 62 Nelson Street (which is now the Pankhurst Centre) with her three daughters between 1898 and 1907. Emmeline moved to the city following the death of her husband, pro-suffragist barrister Dr Richard Pankhurst, and the house was the birthplace of the Suffragette movement, with the first meeting of the Women’s Social and Political Union held in Emmeline’s parlour. Now open to the public as a museum, in the 100th centenary year of votes for women, the Pankhurst Centre has plans for significant renovations to ensure this part of Manchester’s history is preserved for future generations. Glasgow’s The Forge Market Here’s a fact about Glasgow you may not know: it’s home to Scotland’s largest indoor market. The Forge Market, in the city’s East End, was the first of its kind when it opened 23 years ago – all indoor, all centrally heated, and all geared up to offer fantastic value and choice. Today, its traders sell everything from jewellery to food and clothing. And added to that are coffee shops, cafes, restaurants – even sit-on rides and bouncy castles! Just 10 minutes from the centre, the market’s open Thursday to Sunday. The ideal place to kick-start your Christmas shopping, find out more about its festive special events at forgemarket.co.uk

On Wednesdays and Saturdays the centre of St Albans is alive with the bustle and calls of up to 150 traders in the venerable old Market. With a history that reaches back even further than the granting of its Charter in 1553, it has long defined this charming and characterful city. Nowadays you’ll find stalls selling everything from fish to fruit, foam to fascinators. A special extension of the Market is in place for the week leading to Christmas, so you can find gifts for everybody on your list on the Market every day from Sunday 16 December right up to Christmas Eve.

For more fantastic family fun, visit the Meraki Christmas Festival on the Events Meadow in Verulamium Park. For the first time this year, the St Albans Christmas Market is being hosted within a spectacular festival. So not only will you be able to shop for unique hand-made goods from picturesque wooden chalets, you’ll also be able to enjoy all the fun of the fair. This part of Verulamium Park will be transformed into a winter wonderland with rides, a spectacular virtual reality Santa’s grotto experience, Christmas movies, skating, an ice bar and much, much more. WEST END PREMIERE

The hunt is on Next month sees the West End premiere of Dawn King’s Foxfinder, which is set to play the Ambassadors Theatre from September 6 until January 5, 2019. Olivier Award-winning actor Iwan Rheon – of Game of Thrones fame – will star in this darkly comic drama, which is directed by Rachel O’Riordan. England is in crisis, fields are flooded, food is scarce and fear of the red beast grips the land. William Bloor, a foxfinder, arrives at Judith and Samuel Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected fox infestation. But, as the hunt progresses, he finds more questions than answers...
