Now in its 26th year, RHS Garden Wisley Flower Show is a highlight of the gardening calendar, with floral displays, shopping and expert advice on offer, as well as The National Dahlia Society’s annual show and competition, of course. September’s fantastic show aside, the RHS Garden at Wisley is open year-round to visitors. Based in Woking, it is one of four gardens run by the Society, the others being Harlow Carr in North Yorkshire, Hyde Hall in Essex and Rosemoor in Devon. pom-pom headed alliums are blooming at Arundel Castle in West Sussex, making this year’s Allium Extravaganza the most spectacular to date. Alliums are part of the humble onion family, but these elaborate blooms tower over other varieties. Martin Duncan, Head Gardener at Arundel Castle, says: “My favourite allium is the Christophii, also called the Star of Persia, because of its huge round head in a beautiful amethyst colour.” If you want to recreate the look in your garden next spring, Martin’s advice is to plant these perennials in early autumn and preferably in the earth. If planted in pots, it’s best to accompany them with lavender or a similar plant to disguise the untidy allium leaves. Hurry and you’ll just catch this year’s allium display (which runs until June 24), but don’t worry if you miss it as there’s lots going on at the castle all summer long. ENTWELL HALL is Suffolk’s hidden gem and one of England’s finest Tudor houses that stands within the most extensive moat in the county. With many areas to the house it offers the visitor a journey through time from the Great Tudor Kitchen, the Gothic centre block; the work of
Thomas Hopper in the 1820’s to the State Bedroom created by Hopper for a visit from the then Duke of York. Kentwell offers a visual array of many stunning and important works of art including 14th century pictures, tapestries and a magnificent stain glass window. Kentwell’s gardens and grounds that
extend to over 30 acres are often described as ‘magical’ and as one visitor quoted “there is a surprise around every corner”. Guided tours are available and bookings for 2019 are available at 2018 prices if booked this year. Prices start from £6.50 for the Snowdrop and Daffodil Walks visit.

Fantasy meets reality at LEGOLAND Windsor Resort
With more than 55 rides, attractions and shows, there’s something for everyone at this resort, from group activities, such as the Atlantis submarine ride where you can ride together in a sub and explore an underwater world, to the many lands – including LEGO City, which includes the new LEGO NINJAGO World. This features LEGO NINJAGO The Ride: the first attraction in the UK to use 4D effects of heat, smoke and wind, alongside state of the art hand gesture technology, so you can virtually throw fire balls, shock waves, ice and lightning using nothing but your hands. 2018 is an exciting year for the resort, with new attractions including Miniland’s two new areas: USA and Explore the World, which will take guests from New York, along Route 66, and indeed across the globe to India, China, Russia and Australia. There are also two hotels on site, the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort Hotel and the Castle Hotel. ■ Get

Head to the ultimate thrill-seeking park At Staffordshire’s Alton Towers Resort they’ve gone retro with the first new wooden rollercoaster to be introduced in 21 years. The Wicker Man was in development for four years, fuses wood and fire, and allows visitors to see a huge Wicker Man – standing six storeys high – appear to burst into flames as the track races three times throughout the structure. Afraid? You will be when you see the full lineup of rides. But there’s lots for younger and more timid day-trippers too, including the far tamer CBeebies Land. Alton Towers has also introduced a new deal for 2018: buy a season pass for £55 and you can come back all year. ■ Get

Theatre news Still Alice Following a successful three-week run at West Yorkshire Playhouse earlier this year, Christine Mary Dunford’s version of Lisa Genova’s best-selling novel, Still Alice, will tour the UK from September 2018. Starring Sharon Small, the tour will open at the Sheffield Lyceum from September 12 to 15, and play Richmond Theatre from September 18 to 22, King’s Theatre Edinburgh from September 25 to 29, Norwich Theatre Royal from October 2 to 6, the Yvonne Arnaud, Guildford from October 9 to 13, and the Festival Theatre, Malvern from November 20 to 24. Still Alice follows the story of 50-year-old Alice Howland, a renowned linguistics professor at Harvard University, as she battles with early-onset dementia and explores the effects the disease has on identity, family and relationships. In 2014, the novel was adapted into a film starring Julianne Moore, for which she won the Academy, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards MATT CROCKETT

Little Shop of Horrors Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has announced its cast of Little Shop of Horrors, which is set to play at the theatre from August 3 to September 15. Marc Antolin and Jemima Rooper play Seymour and Audrey, with Forbes Masson in the role of East Side florist Mr Mushnik. Matt Willis as sadistic dentist Orin, and US drag queen Vicky Vox as the plant, Audrey II. For the misfits of Skid Row, life is full of broken dreams and dead ends. But there’s hope on the horizon for flower shop assistant, Seymour, when he discovers a mysterious new plant (Audrey II) with killer potential.
For cut-price tickets to West End shows and more call Harley on 01733 293249
Director Maria Aberg says: “The figure of Audrey II represents chaos at the heart of the downtrodden, deeply conventional world of Skid Row. Fuelled by Seymour’s own wish for success she grows increasingly demanding, increasingly glamorous, and increasingly unreasonable, until she’s conquered the whole of New York and the show erupts in a huge, defiant celebration of the subversive and the downright fabulous.” Find out more at openairtheatre.com

Boughton House is the setting for a new exhibition, ‘Music and Memory’
(www.boughtonhouse.co.uk), which played a significant role in the Second World War when it was heavily requisitioned by the War Office for the storage of precious items from the British Museum, and later became a prisoner of war camp. This summer, Boughton is the setting for a new exhibition, ‘Music and Memory’, which opens on June 30. Dedicated to memory in all its forms, the exhibition aims to raise awareness of the problems relating to memory loss, in support of a number of charities, including the Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia UK. The exhibition opens with a performance of a Mozart symphony played from memory by the Aurora Orchestra of London, with talks by leading experts.

BURIED DEEP! Take a step back in time to the 1960s with a trip to Newman Brothers – a Birmingham company in the old Jewellery Quarter that produced some of the world’s finest coffin furniture, including the fittings for the funerals of Winston Churchill and the Queen Mother. Exclusive guided tours are available for groups of 15 or more. Costumed guides will lead you around the factory where you’ll experience the sights, sounds and smells of factory life. You can also have tea and cake in the 1960s-style waiting room, designed to capture the atmosphere of the Newman Brothers staff café, complete with vintage china. Combined tickets to the nearby Pen Museum are available. See www.coffinworks.org
ALL AT SEA The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich may not be on the coast, but it’s at the heart of maritime heritage. Learn about some of Britain’s most dramatic naval stories, with collections covering everything from the Battle of Trafalgar and First World War sea battles to Turner’s sea-inspired artwork and feats of engineering and discovery. See www.rmg. co.uk/national-maritime-museum. Just a short walk away is the Cutty Sark, the world’s only surviving tea clipper and the fastest ship of her time. See www.rmg.co.uk/cutty-sark And for another nautical-themed day out, head to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard on the south coast. Take an audio tour of HMS Victory to learn about the fall of Admiral Nelson during the Battle of Trafalgar, and see the exact

The 45-minute Harbour Tour is a must. This mini-excursion, included in your all-attraction ticket, takes you around Portsmouth harbour and the naval dockyard, offering unrivalled views of the modern Royal Navy, with glimpses of the UK’s largest-ever aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth, when she’s in her home port. GTW news J’adore horses!
Emma, horsing about...
Anyone who’s ever been on a fam trip organised by GTW’s Emma Parkes will know they usually involve a horse or two (we’ve been to Newmarket, the Household Cavalry Museum, you get the gist), and she even managed to get her equine fix on a recent press trip to a French yoga retreat. “This month saw me fly to the south of France to review a yoga retreat called St Jean in the Tarn region,” says Emma. “And guess who I met there – two fantastic Arab horses who were enjoying the ambience of the place as much as me. “St Jean offers tailor-made group retreats to people looking for the ultimate escape, and I can vouch for the fact that it’s a haven of birdsong, woodland, fantastic views, wonderful treatments and inspiring yoga. Find out more at www.stjeanretreats.com – and look out for my review in issue 189 (out mid-September).”
How high?! GTW’s Julie Cousins made a breakthrough this month, conquering her fear of heights on a trip to The Shard (and actually enjoying the view). A big thanks goes to the team at Visit Greenwich – see www.visitgreenwich.org.uk – for organising a fantastic tour of the area, taking in Royal Museums Greenwich and the National Maritime Museum, the Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory and The Queen’s House. “Heights aren’t really my thing and I did gulp at the thought of going up The Shard,” says Julie. “But I thought back to a feature I’d read about ‘doing something every day that scares you’ and decided to conquer my fear. I needn’t have worried: after travelling up over 60 floors in the high speed lifts the views from the 69th floor were spectacular. We were rewarded with a glass of champagne and after GTW

My day job is as a weatherman, but I like to do other jobs that are weather related too. I’ve done several documentary series, such as the World’s Weirdest Extreme Weather and Britain’s Most Extreme Weather. I enjoy travelling, but it would be nice to spend more time with my family. My son is eight and it can be hard having to miss things like reading to him; I have to trade that for being able to make a living for us.
