There’s never been a better time to explore the UK’s muchloved capital. It’s home to the tallest building in Western Europe (The Shard, at 306m tall), the world’s best chefs (think Jamie Oliver, Marco Pierre White et al), a number of royal palaces, acres of parkland, ancient buildings, an iconic river and world-class attractions and museums. In 2015, the city welcomed a record-breaking 31.5 million international and UK tourists, and for many of us it’s just a train, car or coach ride away. So make this the year you explore London to the full and discover its many hidden and not-so hidden gems…

WHAT’S NEW
No visit to London is complete without a tour of one of the city’s most iconic sights… The Houses of Parliament welcomes groups throughout the year on Saturdays and selected week days during parliamentary recesses. A range of ticketed audio, guided and occasional themed tours are available, some of which include the option to add afternoon tea. For most tours, special rates are available for groups of 10 or more. These need to be booked in advance, and tickets are usually released on the first working day of the month. Government’s Clean Air Zone Framework Document proposes Clean Air Zones (CAZ) in not only London, but Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham, Southampton and Derby too. Another 35 CAZ are planned in other cities. Impending charges for non-compliant coaches from October 2017 will include a £10 per day charge for vehicles not meeting Euro 4 emissions standards within the current Congestion Charge area. Coaches not meeting Euro 6 emissions standards will be charged £100 per day
from April 8, 2019, while from 2020 the Mayor of London is proposing to extend the ULEZ to become LEZ to cover most of Greater London (the area within the M25). The Coach Tourism Association (CTA) is supporting the Confederation of Passenger Transport in its representations to TfL and the Government’s Clean Air Zone Framework Document. Brexit has given London tourism a major boost, according to theatre ticket and attraction specialist Encore. Figures for January 2017 from the International Passenger Survey showed visits to the UK were up 11% over the same month in 2016, up to 2.9 million – a record for the month – while spending was up 15% to £1.5 billion, another record for January. Encore’s Head of Sales Jo Bachelor says: “These figures for the UK are definitely being reflected in terms of West End theatre bookings thanks to the excellent exchange rate for incoming visitors, especially from the US, Scandinavia and European markets.” The statistics back up VisitBritain figures showing a 24% uplift in visits for December 2015, and a VisitEngland survey showing that more than 50% of accommodation providers expect an increase in bookings following Brexit To find out more about Encore’s range of packages, call its groups department on 020 7492 1525 or visit www.encoretickets.co.uk

The world famous Buckingham Palace
Fit for a Queen Take a tour of London’s world famous royal palaces and castles? Don’t mind if we do… BUCKINGHAM PALACE Buckingham Palace serves as both the office and London residence of Her Majesty The Queen, and is one of the few remaining working royal palaces in the world. Each summer, when the palace is not being used in its official capacity, visitors can enjoy the 19 State Rooms that provide the setting for ceremonial occasions and official entertaining. The rooms are furnished with many of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck. This year (2017) the summer opening of Buckingham Palace has been extended by three weeks, giving groups

the chance to visit until October 1. The palace reopens in June 2018. Following a visit, groups can relax in the palace’s Garden Café and Shop, and for those keen to learn more about its famous garden, a visit to the State Rooms can be combined with a guided Garden Highlights Tour, which offers access to areas of the garden not accessible with standard admission. Groups of 15 or more get 10% off admission to the palace, which includes a multimedia tour in nine languages.

State vehicles are housed and maintained at the Royal Mews, and include the carriages used for occasions such as state visits and royal weddings. Among the historic coaches and carriages on display are the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, which was first used to convey The Queen to the State Opening of Parliament in 2014, and the 1902 State Landau, which transported The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge from Westminster Abbey

CLARENCE HOUSE
Clarence House is the official residence of The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and is one of the last remaining aristocratic town houses in London. Built between 1825 and 1827, Clarence House takes its name from its first occupant, William Henry, Duke of Clarence, later William IV. The arrangement of the rooms and the groupings of their contents remain much as they were in The Queen Mother’s time, with important works from Her Majesty’s famous collection of art in their former positions. A group tour of Clarence House takes in the five rooms on the ground floor where official engagements are undertaken. For a special visit, groups can book a private late afternoon tour of the royal residence. The exclusive tour begins in the garden, where visitors can see the formal planting added by The Prince of Wales in memory of his grandmother. In addition to the rooms included in the group visit, a private guided tour includes the Cornwall Room, which is hung with 22 of The Prince of Wales’ watercolours, painted between 1998 and 2006. The tour concludes with a glass of champagne and includes a complimentary guidebook.

For 2017 only, Restoring Windsor: The Castle after the Fire will offer group visitors to Windsor Castle a unique opportunity to learn more about the fire of 1992. Groups will hear the dramatic story of the battle to stop the flames and save irreplaceable works of art from the Royal Collection. The visit offers an in-depth look at the subsequent five-year restoration project, which saw some rooms rebuilt to new designs, while others were painstakingly returned to their historic appearance. After refreshments and an expert talk in the castle’s Winchester Tower, visitors can explore the State Apartments at their leisure with a multimedia tour. Other special visits for groups include The Military Knights’ Tale, offering a personal insight into the ancient and noble institution of the Military Knights of Windsor, and the Great Kitchen to State Apartments tour. Available from October to December, this takes groups behind the scenes in the oldest working kitchen in the country, which has remained in constant use for nearly 750 years. On select days in August, the tranquil royal retreat of Frogmore House is open exclusively to coach group visitors. Originally built in the 17th century, Frogmore became a royal residence in 1792 when George III purchased it for his wife, Queen Charlotte. A coach park is located just a 10-minute walk from Windsor Castle, and groups of 15 or more get 10% off the price of admission, as well as a multimedia tour in nine languages and a Precincts Tour in english. ■

PAY-AS-YOU-GO TRAVEL
The most convenient and flexible way to travel in London is often by payas-you-go using a Visitor Oyster card or a contactless payment card. You can simply touch in and out on the yellow card readers at a station, or touch in only on a bus or at a tram stop.
Visitor Oyster cards can be bought online or from a travel agent ahead of your trip to London, which avoids you having to queue to buy a ticket on arrival. Visitor Oyster card customers can also save money with special offers and discounts at restaurants, shops, galleries and entertainment venues.

HISTORIC LONDON
History’s Hidden Gems Explore London’s streets as they were hundreds of years ago ALL HALLOWS BY THE TOWER CHURCH The oldest church in the City of London, All Hallows by the Tower was founded in 675AD and built by the Anglo-Saxons a full three centuries before the Tower of London. A 7th century Saxon arch is still visible, as is the mosaic flooring of a 2nd century Roman villa, Saxon coffins and stones from a Crusader castle.
LONDON’S ROMAN WALL & FORT
The Romans arrived in 43AD and set about fortifying the new city, culminating in the construction of a city wall around 200AD. Much has been destroyed, but there are several very well preserved sections at Tower Hill, on Noble Street and in an underground car park close to the Museum of London.
ST DUNSTAN-IN-THEEAST CHURCH
Originally built around 1100, St Dunstan-in-theEast was named after the 10th century Bishop of London and Archbishop of Canterbury. The original church was damaged during

the Great Fire of London, subsequently patched up – including a Wren-designed steeple – but largely destroyed during the Second World War. Today, the ruins are framed by a pretty public garden.
TEMPLE CHURCH
The Knights Templar, made famous again thanks to their role in The Da Vinci Code, gave their name to this 12th century church in the heart of the City. Modelled on Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre, highlights include effigies of ten Templar knights on the floor.
CHURCHILL’S SECRET BUNKER
An exceptionally wellhidden gem, Churchill’s secret underground bunker, known as ‘Paddock’, was the government’s 40room Second World War nerve centre in North West London. There are occasional guided tours and it is only accessible through a non-descript brick door on a quiet residential street with most residents unaware of what’s beneath their feet…

ST BRIDE’S CHURCH
St Bride’s, possibly founded by Celtic monks from Ireland, is one of London’s oldest churches. The current iteration was designed entirely by Sir Christopher Wren in 1672 – one of only six in London designed entirely by Wren – though
it was damaged during the Blitz. The restored St Bride’s now forms a well-known stop in the centre of London and visitors can visit the church itself as well as its underground crypt. ■

QUIRKY ATTRACTIONS THE NAME’S BOND…
Bond in Motion at the London Film Museum is the ideal spot for any group with a passion for the big screen, writes GTW’s Dominic Ward. Located just off Covent Garden, the exhibition’s home to the largest collection of James Bond vehicles anywhere in the world and is easily accessible by public transport (just five minutes from Covent Garden tube station, with access by road off The Strand). Visitors can expect to see some of the classic vehicles to be used in the longrunning film series, such as Goldfinger’s Rolls Royce Phantom III, the Lotus Esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me, as well as the classic Aston Martin DB5. Aside from the vehicles, the exhibition also features props used in the movies, including Bond’s passports from Casino Royale, as well as some of the gadgets used across the series. Once you’ve finished your tour of the exhibition the next port of call has to be the shop, which has a great deal of James Bond and Bond in Motion merchandise. Autumn 2017 sees the launch of Sofitel hotel Victory House. s Love in the face of war THEATRE REVIEW
F
songs include I Got Rhythm and They Can’t Take That Away From Me. I’d not anticipated the story to be told through so much dance, and especially not through ballet. However I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable the show was. I was truly mesmerised by the final ballet, which draws the play to a close with the lovers finally locked in each other’s arms. It was breathtaking. I have to add that the scenery and backdrops were amazing too, and at one point my eyes were drawn away from the main stage as I watched the clouds floating by! The show is on at the Dominion Theatre – and the theatre’s history is definitely worth a mention. First opened in 1929, just days before the Wall Street Crash, in the early years it was marred by the effects of the Depression. Then, in 1931,

or those who’ve not seen the original film with Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, An American in Paris tells the story of post-war Paris emerging from the darkness of the German occupation. An American GI, Jerry Mulligan, is pursuing his dream to become a painter when he meets a Parisian dancer, Lise, and the show tells the story of friendship and love in the aftermath of war. The male lead, Jerry, is played by American Robert Fairchild, who’s taken a leave of absence from the New York City Ballet to star as Jerry both in New York and London. Lise is played by Brit Leanne Cope, a Royal Ballet dancer who’s added singing to her repertoire for the first time in this role. The songs were so familiar I was able to sing along to many. the theatre enjoyed greater fortunes as a venue for the motion picture when it was hired by Universal Pictures. In the late 1970s, when the era of single screen cinemas and long running film shows came to an end, the Dominion Theatre primarily became the venue for music acts, such as Bowie, Madness, Bon Jovi and Van Morrison through the 1980s, before becoming the home for the big musicals again in the early 1990s. It’s a fascinating theatre – and a fantastic show. ■

DINE DANCE DARE The London Cabaret Club offers a sophisticated entertainment environment combining high-end dining experiences with an innovative live cabaret show. Set around distinctly British themes, the shows celebrate the rich heritage of British culture, past and present. Featuring stars from London’s West-End, original choreography, and premium production values, we present a unique approach within London’s entertainment and night-life scene. Ever since our first pop-up event at the Arts Club in July 2013, The London Cabaret Club has gone from strength to strength. Subsequent large scale productions such as the 3 Day pop-up event at One Mayfair in November 2013, as well as our 4 week show at The Collection South Kensington in May 2014 all launched to resounding success. Our sold-out series of shows, ‘London Never Dies’ was performed at our new permanent home; The Bloomsbury Ballroom and met with critical acclaim and fantastic reviews! The revolutionary cabaret concept is the creation of Evelina Girling and Doni Fierro. Unrelenting attention to the detail of our dazzling costumes and live bands, married with a seamless fusion between the dining and entertainment, saw the shows at One Mayfair and The Collection completely sell out. WHERE THE LION IS KING… London’s West End takes on an African vibe as GTW’s Helen Milbank joins the wild types on stage for Disney’s The Lion King It’s emotive, it’s powerful and it’s been filling London’s Lyceum Theatre day in, day out for 18 years. There’s a reason why Disney’s The Lion King has become the highest-grossing stage show in history, and as the cheetahs, rhinos and giraffes thunder on to the stage to the tune of Elton John’s Circle of Life that reason soon becomes clear. Propelled by actors, the puppetry is word-class and the set breathtaking, as the stage splits in two to reveal a hidden staircase and the sun beats down on the African plains. Of course it’s the magestic lions who take centre stage, with Simba (played by Nick Afoa as well as a number of hugely talented youngsters), his
dad Mufasa (played by Shaun Escoffery) and co roaring into view. If, like me, you’ve managed to miss ever seeing the film, the tale follows the adventures of young cub Simba who’s the heir to his dad Mufasa’s kingdom. His wicked uncle, Scar, has other plans for the African savannah they roam and plots to usurp Mufasa’s throne by luring the pair to their death in a stampede of wildebeests. Cue Mufasa’s heartbreaking death and little Simba’s battle to escape and eventually take back his homeland with the help of his friends – one of which is a rather flatulent warthog, who soon becomes the show’s comedy turn. Eighteen years after it first stampeded in to the West End, The Lion King is far from being past its sell-by date. See grouptraveloffers.com for the best ticket deals.
THE ADVENTURER RETURNS A theatre trip to the West End usually begins or ends with a feast, and the GTW team can give a big thumbs up to quirky eaterie Mr Fogg’s Tavern. The theme pub, which sits slap bang in the centre of theatre land on St Martin’s Lane, pays homage to eccentric adventurer Phileas Fogg. Imaginary souvenirs from the imaginary traveller adorn every wall, ceiling and spare surface, and the quirkiness rolls into the menu. Bet you never knew Phileas’ favourite snack was a parma ham, mature cheddar cheese and honey mustard sandwich… Groups can revel in real ales, ‘mother’s ruin’ gin cocktails and grog in traditional tankards and pewter cups. Groups of up to six can book online (if there’s more of you ring ahead to check availability). Plan your trip at mr-foggs.com

ive action, iconic sets and exclusive DreamWorks animation… at Shrek’s Adventure! London you’ll be whisked away on a 4D magic bus tour with Donkey as your driver, before crash landing in Shrek’s swamp where an immersive adventure awaits. Familiar characters from the Shrek franchise greet guests along the way, before everyone’s favourite ogre welcomes them back to London, alongside the rest of the DreamWorks gang – including characters from hit films How to Train your Dragon and Madagascar. We went on a Saturday afternoon – with queues surprisingly short – and were politely herded into a group of around 40 to take the tour (this meant a cosy group atmosphere, though it did get quite crowded in some of the smaller rooms en route). Enthusiastic, talented performers ensure everyone’s involved throughout – and while you can’t take your own photos,

Each room’s impressively detailed and immersive, with sounds and scents adding to the atmosphere. Various children in our group were given ‘quest’ items to take to each room, which helped the story flow and kept them involved. Some jokes were heavily aimed at us – and these went safely over the children’s heads! Our adventure ended with us meeting Shrek in the flesh and the whole experience was ‘Shrek-tacular’ (groan…). It’s fantastic for all Shrek fans – but you’ll have a good time even if you’re not terribly au fait with the films.

ver seen a picture drawn by a horse? Or measured yourself up against the tallest man ever recorded? If you’ve never been to Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, I’ll assume the answer is no… These are just a tiny portion of the amazing objects and facts on display. There are six floors to discover at Ripley’s in Piccadilly Circus, and each has a different theme. From amazing art to the weird but wonderful, there’s something for everyone. You’ll start your tour with a trip up to the top floor in a lift that could have come straight from the set of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Once there you’ll step into a room filled with nature exhibits that describe weird and wonderful facts. There’s so much to take in, including a calf born with two heads. One tip I have is to look up to the ceiling – the exhibits aren’t just limited to eye level. As you wander around you’ll be transported back in time to learn about the traditions of different cultures. A particular favourite of mine were the shrunken heads… There are also interactive treats in store, and the mirror maze will have you wondering if you’ll ever get out!

THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY
Ripley’s is a real eye opener and it’s incredible to think this was all started by one man, who was born in 1890. Robert Ripley was a celebrated cartoonist and loved travelling. He visited 201 countries during his life and had the first ever reality TV show, back in 1949. Along the way he collected weird and amazing artefacts. These were sold at auction after he died of a heart attack during a live broadcast of his TV show in 1949. A gentleman called John Arthur bought most of what was sold and decided to put them on display in Florida. That was the first Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, and there are now 33 attractions around the world. n

HANDEL & HENDRIX
Separated by a wall – and 250odd years – are the homes of two legendary musicians who chose London as their home. Handel & Hendrix in London tells the story of Jimi Hendrix, who lived in this Mayfair flat in the late 1960s, and the German-born British baroque composer George Frideric Handel, who made the next door house his home in 1712 and eventually became a British citizen in 1727. Handel House occupies two floors of 25 Brook Street, where the composer lived until his death in 1759. The four restored historic rooms include his bedroom and the dining room in which he often gave informal recitals for friends and neighbours. Additional rooms in the

adjoining house are used for temporary exhibitions focusing on Handel’s life, professional career and associates. Hendrix Flat occupies the upper floor of 23 Brook Street, where Jimi lived from July 1968 to March 1969. The main room of the flat where he lived, entertained, rehearsed and wrote new music has been restored, and a permanent exhibition introduces Hendrix’s place in the musical and social world of 1960s London, as well as his influences and legacy. In the heart of London’s West End, admission (priced at £10) is limited, and while tickets can be bought on the door it’s recommended you buy them in advance. Handel & Hendrix in London is open every day bar Sunday. Find out more at handelhendrix. org ■

World-famous cricket ground The Kia Oval just got even better for groups with the launch of two new tours
S
urrey’s Kia Oval has played host to many a game of cricket, from the birth of The Ashes in 1882 through to England’s historic Ashes win in the 2005 series. By the time this London guide has gone to press, the ground will have hosted its 100th test match, with South Africa the visitors. Tours are relatively new to The Oval, having only begun in January 2017, and the
ground has just launched a new educational tour – called ‘Match Ready’ – aimed at giving youngsters a chance to see what goes on behind the scenes as the ground prepares for a match. Tours lead groups through to some of the key spots, including the museum and the famous Long Room. (Many England players have their portrait hanging on the walls of the Members’
