JT’S XG Jessica Thompson is the Harley-Heaven Parts, Accessories & Merchandise Group Buyer, and lives the Harley-Davidson life as much as anyone in the Harley-Heaven group. Here is her story about the very cool, Harley-Davidson Street 500 she built with her Dad. I bought the bike pre-owned about 6 months ago and with the help of my Dad, set about doing what we could to make it a fun off‑road bike, I wasn’t planning on setting any land speed records but wanted to be able to go to some flat track open days with family and friends up at Broadford. We did the basics easily enough, getting our hands on a pre-owned Royal Enfield rim for the back and a spare Excel MX rim for the front. The front end is completely stock, I just added Heavy Duty Screaming Eagle fork oil, then dropped the tubes a couple of inches in the trees so it tracked level with the rear, it also reduced the front rake, which increased the handling a bit. I Swapped out the handlebars to a set of OGI 7/8th Flat tracker bars, these fit straight into the HD Clamp also swapped out the HD Grips to a set of Orange ODI dirt grips. We removed the ABS braking system and went back to the old school independent braking system. Originally, we removed the front brakes but after a bit of a test run, we put them back on as I felt more confident with them there. We kept the stock headers for this one and welded up a 2-1 system using an old Norton muffler we had in the shed, removing the cat – this gave it a much better “Harley” note and Installed an Arlen ness Big Sucker air cleaner with a simple base map. Internals are pretty much stock; we did add a Barnett clutch upgrade for this experiment. To keep with the dirt bike theme, we swapped out the stock pegs to some pre-loved pegs off an old Dirt bike we had in the shed, as well as straightened and lifted the stock gear lever position as the MX boots didn’t fit under the shifter peg. For now, I have kept the stock tins on the bike, mainly to keep the cost down, and have just added an orange pinstripe accent to break up the black a little and tie in with the rest of the bike. The chain drive conversion kit was purchased through our Dandenong Dealership, we changed out the rear wheel to a larger 17” spoke option, so the kit no longer suited exactly but we made it fit, a few new mounting holes here and there did the trick. After adding a large aluminum rad guard to the front, we were worried about it running hot, so we moved the radiator cap position and made some new copper hoses to help with the cooling. I have plans to add some progressive rear shocks to the bike down the track as well some seat changes and other bits and bobs here and there. I’m pretty sure it will be an ever-evolving project. So far, I’ve made it out to 1 flat track open day on it and had a blast, but as Casey Stone said my ambition outweighed my talent. Look forward to getting out there again soon.
