NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS
Jazz vocalist Catherine Russell presents Bring It Back - a Valentine’s Day gift to music lovers everywhere that features gems from the jazz age (p.27). The recent passing of composer John Tavener has renewed interest in his deeply spiritual music. This month, harmonia mundi is reissuing his acclaimed Eternity’s Sunrise (p.13). Spirituality is at the heart of Conspirare’s powerful new album of Orthodox choral music entitled The Sacred Spirit of Russia (p.11). Vocal splendor is also in evidence on the RIAS Kammerchor’s disc of music by CPE Bach (p.10), as well as Hyperion’s album of Monteverdi Madrigals featuring the ensemble Arcangelo (p.19) and their disc of Schubert Lieder with baritone Florian Boesch (p.17). Chamber music lovers will applaud harmonia mundi’s new album of Beethoven Piano Trios played by Isabelle Faust, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Alexander Melnikov (p.9) as well as Florilegium’s SACD of works by Couperin and Rebel (p.4). Meditations, featuring oboist Céline Moinet and harpist Sarah Christ, offers listeners a delightful album of virtuoso opera transcriptions (p.12). Also new this month are new discs from two of today’s most exciting young pianists, Denis Matsuev (p.22) and Cédric Tiberghien (p.18). Last but not least, maestro Bernard Haitink leads the London Symphony Orchestra in Bruckner’s glorious Symphony No.9 (p.21).

DUKAS L’Apprenti Sorcier, Velléda, Polyeucte Overture
IMPORT French composer Paul Dukas was a classical “one hit wonder” - thanks to The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, his fame was assured. The work remains a staple of Price Code: CA22 concert repertoire and will live on in immortality (Suggested Retail Price: $22.98) thanks to Walt Disney’s Fantasia. However, this friend of Claude Debussy gave us further evidence of his immense talent with the Cantata Velléda and the overture to Polyeucte, which have been restored thanks to the efforts of the Palazzetto Bru-Zane. This recording by François-Xavier Roth and Les Siècles includes all three works and features instruments from the late 19th century that illuminate the original, vibrant colors of Dukas’s brilliant orchestrations.

IMPORT Violinist Thibault Noally has enjoyed a highly successful career as a member of several acclaimed period-instrument groups including Price Code: CA22 the Musiciens du Louvre and Concerto Köln. (Suggested Retail Price: $22.98) This album of German Baroque music from Aparté marks Noally’s début as a soloist. It explores the evolution of solo violin repertoire over the course of the 17th and 18th centuries through works by both well-known composers (Bach, Telemann) and those who remained in the margins (Baltzar, Vilsmayr). Noally cleverly connects these works and creates a fascinating recital that sheds new light on a key period in the development of Baroque forms and techniques.

[PRIORITY RELEASE] Florilegium Channel Classics • CCS SA 33213 IMPORT Hybrid SACD/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD The two composers presented on this recording by the acclaimed English ensemble Florilegium were musicians at the court of Versailles. François Couperin was organist of the Chapelle du Roi, and Jean-Féry Rebel was a violinist in the Chapelle du Roi and composer for the King. Like many chamber works of the period, Couperin left no precise instructions as to instrumentation for Les Nations. This adds versatility as the treble parts are therefore suitable for flutes, violins or oboes or any combination available. Rebel was an innovator, and one of the first French musicians to compose sonatas in the Italian style. His ballet Les Caractères de la danse was one of his most popular and widely performed works.

SHEPPARD Sacred Choral Music
IMPORT Following Gramophone Editor’s Choices for their recent excursions into the sacred music of Bruckner and of Gabriel Jackson, Duncan Price Code: CA20 Ferguson and the Choir of St. Mary’s (Suggested Retail Price: $20.98) Cathedral, Edinburgh return, in their fourth disc together, to the epoch of their first recorded triumph – the early sixteenth century. Their 2010 Taverner disc won plaudits for its exhilarating freshness and panache, and the choir brings the same musical and liturgical integrity to music by Taverner’s near contemporary John Sheppard, Informator Choristarum at Magdalen College, Oxford. This wide-ranging collection is centered around Sheppard’s most extended and ecstatic composition, the Missa Cantate.

Remember me my deir – Jacobean songs of love and loss Fires of Love Delphian • DCD 34129 IMPORT On this recording, Scotland’s modern-day troubadours Fires of Love follow King James VI on a varied journey through song and Price Code: CA20 instrumental music. As the musicians deftly (Suggested Retail Price: $20.98) weave their way through Scotland’s rich tapestry of historic manuscripts, they unveil attractive but unsophisticated melodies, often heavily imbued with the French style. On their arrival in London, James and his musicians would have been taken aback by the highly active theatre scene. Shakespeare’s texts give rise to compelling settings, from the plaintive to risqué. As the Scots courtier-musicians nimbly traded French influence for London’s ‘Englished’ Italian style, one wonders: did they look homeward with regret?

BRAUNFELS Piano Concerto, Ariels Gesang, Schottische Phantasie for Viola & Orchestra
IMPORT German composer Walter Braunfels built a considerable reputation before the 1930s as composer, pianist and teacher. Since his death Price Code: CA23 in 1954, his operas have been revived, and (Suggested Retail Price: $23.98) Dutton now presents a disc with several world première recordings. The Piano Concerto is notable for its sweeping cantilenas, vivid expression and orchestral color. Victor Sangiorgio is authoritative in the demanding solo part. The Schottische Phantasie for Viola & Orchestra is a large-scale viola concerto eloquently played here by Sarah-Jane Bradley. The program is completed by the Shakespeare-inspired tone poem Ariels Gesang.

MATTHEWS Vespers, Symphony No.7 Katie Bray (mezzo-soprano), Matthew Long (tenor), The Bach Choir, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, David Hill, John Carewe Dutton • CDLX 7305 IMPORT Unlike many contemporary composers, David Matthews enjoys working in the great forms of the past – symphony, string quartet, oratorio Price Code: CA23 – and finding ways of renewing them. He has (Suggested Retail Price: $23.98) never shied away from tonality and possesses a musical language that is clear and direct. Matthews’s Vespers, a grand oratorio masterfully combining a sense of solemnity and exhilaration, is an important addition to the great tradition of choral music. The same feeling of boisterous energy is felt in his Symphony No.7. Inspired by Sibelius’s Seventh Symphony – a one-movement work that subtly transitions from slow to fast and back again – Matthews creates a piece of exquisitely scored beauty and richness. Both works are heard here in their world première recordings.

BAX Symphony in F
MPORT Dutton presents the world première recording of Bax’s “symphony number zero.” The piano score of Arnold Bax’s Symphony in F of 1907 was completed by its composer but never orchestrated, and has long been one of the great might-have-beens of the British symphonic repertoire, along with Elgar’s third symphony and E.J. Moeran’s second. Unlike Elgar and Moeran, Bax actually completed his symphony, and now Martin Yates has set it into full score, managing to catch the elusive, idiomatic sound of Bax’s orchestra in a convincing way. The glorious second movement in particular, on a similar scale to his many later tone poems, is a striking and poetic creation in which Bax finds his voice.

Bartók wrote of his compatriot, “If I were to name the composer whose works are the most perfect embodiment of the Hungarian spirit, I would answer, Kodály.” The Dante Quartet, winners of the BBC Music Magazine Award for their album of Franck and Fauré, respond to this music with dancing energy and folkloric simplicity.

Zemlinsky wrote his two completed (Suggested Retail Price: $20.98) symphonies while studying at the conservatory. He wrote under the watchful eye of its conservative masters, and was greatly influenced by Brahms; but like many of his classmates and contemporaries, Zemlinsky peppered the otherwise bland conservatory diet with visits to performances of new works by Verdi, Wagner and Richard Strauss. SCHUBERT Der Wanderer Florian Boesch (baritone) Roger Vignoles (piano) Hyperion • CDA 68010 IMPORT Florian Boesch possesses a sensuously attractive baritone voice, first-rate diction and remarkable acting ability. Following on his acclaimed album of Loewe songs, Boesch is joined again by Roger Vignoles for an album of Schubert Lieder. Der Wanderer focuses on the composer’s darker songs. They encapsulate a recurrent theme of German Romantic art: that of the rootless outsider. It is the world of Goethe’s mysterious Harper and Mignon, and of the solitary, silhouetted figures in the darker landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich. In music it found its supreme expression, not only in Schubert’s Winterreise but in these many individual ‘wandering’ songs: some grimly resigned, some serenely contemplative, others imbued with a sense of physical and spiritual isolation and longing for an ultimately unattainable ‘otherness.’

Tiberghien’s expressive, mercurial, quicksilver playing, with its extraordinary pianissimos and kaleidoscopic range of color, makes him an ideal performer of this repertoire. Szymanowski’s most celebrated works have been recorded here. The four early Études include the popular Andante in modo d’una canzone, a sorrowful song above slow repeated chords. IMPORT Previously Available as CDA 66796 (034571167961) Deleted July 2013 The two works on this mid-price reissue Price Code: CA12 featuring the Gaudier Ensemble come from (Suggested Retail Price: $12.98) different periods in Dvorák’s career. In the colorful Op.77 String Quintet, instead of a second viola, he places a double bass beneath the single cello. The success of his Op.81 Piano Quintet rests on its happy reconciliation of forces. Dvorák’s early attempts at composing for the piano had been hampered by his own lack of familiarity with the instrument, but in this work he achieves a remarkable fluency, with five instruments operating as consistent equals and in harmonious unity and balance.

His début release on the Mariinsky label received widespread acclaim. For his third release, Matsuev turns to the music of Tchaikovsky, with the Piano Concertos Nos.1 & 2. Tchaikovsky’s first Piano Concerto is one of his most popular works. He balances core motivic elements with a sense of lyrical spontaneity to create a technically challenging but instantly appealing work. It is the first commercial release of these performances, originally recorded by the BBC. Mewton-Wood died at the age of thirty-one and made very few commercial recordings. Benjamin Britten gave the première of his Piano Concerto at the 1938 Proms, but revised the work in 1945. This revised version was first recorded in 1947 by Mewton-Wood, joined by the London Symphony Orchestra and Basil Cameron. The vocal works by Seiber and Bush were commissioned by Pears for a recital that he and Mewton-Wood gave in May 1953. Four months later, the BBC asked the two musicians to record the works for future broadcast.

Following on the success of their 1973 debut album, Skynyrd’s 1974 album Second Helping features their biggest hit single ever, “Sweet Home Alabama,” an answer to Neil Young’s “Southern Man.” Backed by a tight rhythm section and the mighty three-guitar attack of Allen Collins, Ed King and Gary Rossington, singer Ronnie Van Zant turned in legendary performances on “I Need You,” “The Needle And The Spoon” and “The Ballad Of Curtis Loew.” The eight rockin’ tracks of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s third album, Nuthin’ Fancy, take the band to new territory. Conceived while the band was on tour, the music is heavier and harder, incorporating some of the flavor of album rock bands that were popular in the mid-’70s. Kyriakos Kalaitzidis En Chordais & Ensemble Constantinople Maria Farantouri World Village WV 479092 File in: World / Europe / Mediterranean
Between the discovery of the silk road and the inner search: The musical voyages of Marco Polo. Virtuoso oud player and artistic director of En Chordais music ensemble, Kyriakos Kalaitzidis has gathered together a group of devoted collaborators, including the Canadian Ensemble Constantinople and the renowned Greek singer Maria Farantouri, to tell the musical tale of one of the defining periods of human history. A sonorous evocation of Marco Polo’s account of his epic voyage and the countries he traveled through. Each track journeys on into the next, the fragrant acoustics wafting us along this mellifluous spice route. And as the miles fly by, so time and history discreetly reveal their lessons for humanity.
