(WHUQDO %HDXW\ NILS LANDGREN Not only the trombonist Nils Landgren has built up an enormous fan base over the decades – with his Funk Unit, with big bands and alongside the greats of jazz music – so has the vocalist Nils Landgren. His clear, throaty and yet mellow voice is very distinctive, and perfect for ballads. Apart from on his Christmas anthology "Christmas With My friends," it could also be admired on "The Moon, The Stars And You" that came out two years ago. What is more, Landgren put together a rhythm section here that understood each other intuitively. Alongside his companion of many years Lars Danielsson on the bass and cello, and the Viktoria Tolstoy drummer Rasmus Kihlberg, he also added Michael Wollny as a consummate sensitive piano accompanist to the mix.

Icons & Influences GEORGE CABLES Jazz pianists are often judged by the company they keep. Some eventually become soloists and front their own groups, but most have to make their living as accompanists and collaborators, venturing out sporadically for solo or duo performances. Judged on such criteria, George Cables has certainly achieved the highest marks, as he has worked with some of the best front men in jazz. He grew up in New York and by his middle twenties was making his first recordings. He toured as part of the famed Art Blakey Jazz Messengers, together with trumpet player Woody Shaw. Soon after, both Cables and Shaw were on the West Coast and were playing and recording with saxophonist Joe Henderson and then with Shaw's own group. In the studio again for HighNote, Cables takes a lifetime of experience and distills it into an unhackneyed program of originals, standards and not-so-standards that pays tribute to those artists whose talent, personality and in some cases genius have left their indelible marks on George Cables the man and the musician.

It Takes All Kinds JON IRABAGON Jon Irabagon's star continues to rise, steeply. Monk's Mood WOLFGANG SCHMIDTKE ORCHESTRA With STEVE LACY and ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH There are many fine interpreters of Monk repertoire, foremost among them being Steve Lacy and Alexander Von Schlippenbach, both of whom are the featured guests on this album by the veteran German band leader. The album comes from two separate concerts by the Schmidtke band in 1999 and 2001, the four tracks with Lacy are in fact Lacy compositions, whilst the three with Schlippenbach are Monk works. Schmidtke himself is a saxophonist best known for his collaborative work with Peter Brotzmann, Ginger Baker, Marilyn Mazur, Johnny Dyani and many more.

All known recordings from Benny Goodmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s successful performances in Moscow, Russia, during 1962. These historic shows mark the very first time an American jazz musician was invited to tour that country. To the 21 tracks appearing on the original Benny Goodman in Moscow (RCA Victor LOC-6008) 2-LP album, we have added seven extra tracks recorded during the same performances but not included on the original LPs nor on any other CD release of this set. Four of them come from the soundtrack of a rare Newsreel film made during the first Moscow performances, and one comes from a rare broadcast made in Georgia, ex-Soviet Union. The latter five songs appear here on CD for the first time ever. As a further bonus, we have added three rare performances by the same orchestra recorded during the same months as the Moscow concerts, and two complete trio sets taken from TV shows that have also never previously appeared on CD.

GRANT GREEN 180g LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LP Guitarist Grant Green and tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec recorded very few sessions together. One of the best is contained on Born to Be Blue (Blue Note BST-84432). Born Ike Abrams Quebec in Newark, New Jersey, on August 17, 1918, Quebec was an accomplished dancer and pianist, who switched to tenor sax as his primary instrument in his early twenties, and quickly earned a reputation as a promising player. Blue Note’s executive Alfred Lion was always fond of Quebec’s music, but was unsure how audiences would respond to the saxophonist after a decade of low visibility. In the mid-to-late 1950s, Blue Note issued a series of Quebec singles for the juke box market; and audiences responded well, leading to a number of warmly-received albums. Quebec’s comeback, however, was cut short by his death from lung cancer on January 16, 1963.

Remembering LP GRANT GREEN 180g LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LP Unlike most of Grant Green’s (1935-1979) many trio albums, Remembering didn’t make use of the organ or the piano, consisting instead of a guitar-bass-drums format. Backed by such subtle players as Wilbur Ware and Al Harewood, Green could showcase his talents with no inhibition, making this one of the most remarkable works of his whole career. The guitarist’s popularity during this early period of his career is confirmed by the fact that, between the recording of his first and second albums (taped in the short span from January 28 to April 1, 1961), he participated as a sideman on six more albums by other leaders, including: Baby Face Willette’s Face to Face, Brother Jack McDuff ’s The Honeydripper, Stanley Turrentine’s Up at Minton’s, Dave Bailey’s Reaching Out, a Kenny Dorham date which was rejected and never released, and Hank Mobley’s Workout. Green would never again record with Ware and Harewood in a trio format.

Korea - Arirang & Minyo Singing LEE CHUN-HEE Lee Chun-hee is the most prominent singer of Gyeonggi minyo today and is recognised as a myeonchang (virtuoso vocalist). In fact Lee is designated by the Korean government as "a skill-possessor of imortant intangible cultural property", and has been appointed for two terms as art director of the Folk Music Ensemble of the National Gugak Centre. Indeed when UNESCO made Arirang part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Lee was the invited singer. Gyeonggi minyo are the Korean folk songs sung by professional singers (as opposed to indigenous songs sung by commoners), coming from the Seoul-Gyeonggi geographical area. Arirang is a specific song (originally a theme tune from a 1926 film) that has become Korea's most popular minyo song. The 11 tracks feature solo singing, singing with janggu drum accompaniment, and singing with ensemble (oboe, fiddle, flute, zither, drum).

Heath Common is a songwriter, poet and performance-artist from northern England. He began his musical career playing in New York City with Robert Lockwood and Johnny Shines – the stepson and close friend, respectively, of the legendary blues musician, Robert Johnson. Following this, Heath Common worked with – and was greatly influenced by – many major figures in the New York ‘Art Rock’ scene of the 1980s and early 1990s. Subsequently, Heath Common formed a duo with the Thin Man before both men went on to work with a diverse number of musicians ranging from the guitarist John Fahey to the British indie act, The Rhythm Sisters.
