%UHDN WKH %DODQFH CHLOE CHARLES A mere three years ago, a young Canadian singer-songwriter and self-taught classical guitarist released her debut EP, Little Green Bud. A fitting title, too, as it set the tone for a fully blossoming career that’s about to go off the scales with the release of Chloe Charles’ first full-length CD, Break The Balance. Since Little Green Bud, music critics and fans alike have been scurrying to put into words what it is that Chloe does. She’s that spellbindingly different. The press have likened Chloe to everyone from Björk to Billie Holiday, Amy Winehouse to Adele, Alicia Keys to Joni Mitchell. Whilst this reflects her unfathomable range, it goes a long way towards describing why this singing sorceress’ musical magic defies any and all straitjackets of classification. Her discovery of classical guitar just a few short years ago fuelled a love for all things stringed and resonant, plotting a roadmap for a territory inhabited by cello, violin and bass – each song a mini-symphonic stopping point. Here, her penchant for orchestral soul pop and jazz – and a blend of many influences in-between – could happily co-exist within a timeless and ethereal soundscape.

After his contributions to John Taylor’s and Kenny Wheeler’s recordings, “Circularityâ€? is Julian ArgĂźelles’s debut album with this label. Eight original pieces, all bearing the leader’s signature and performed with a tried and true quartet: ArgĂźelles on tenor and soprano sax, Dave Holland on double bass, Martin France on drums and John Taylor on piano.

ArgĂźelles first achieved fame as a member of maverick big band Loose Tubes (who have reformed this year to release a new album). His artistic path is that of a musician who has kept moving forward, looking for new expressive forms as well as sonic and textural shades for his tunes. He has been playing live for nigh on thirty years (although still aged under 50) and released his first record as a leader in 1991. This continual growth and development have made him a musician who is never predictable but, nevertheless, clearly recognizable. In the opening track, “Trialityâ€?, he launches into a long solo that demonstrates his great improvisational verve. In contrast “Circularityâ€? is driven by a groove revealing the strong group dynamic in his writing and within the quartet. This is, after all, the same combo (without Dave Holland) that recorded “Phaedrusâ€? in 1991, revealing perhaps another kind of circularity in ArgĂźelles’ work. $Q\RQH :LWK $ +HDUW IIRO RANTALA STRING TRIO When pianist Iiro Rantala won the German Record Critics Award three years ago with his ACT and solo debut "Lost Heroes", following it up with the ECHO Jazz and thus abruptly launching himself into the top ranks of Europe's jazz musicians, he could have taken the easy way out and simply made another solo album. But the Finn preferred to keep systematically developing his career. And now, with "Anyone With A Heart", he takes that journey further, definitively showing himself to be a great Neo Romantic, beyond all stylistic limitations. Rantala this time composed all the numbers himself – all except the homage to the Great American Songbook "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". And he conceived all of them from the outset for the classical form of the piano trio: piano, violin and cello. On "Anyone With A Heart" the trio set off on an overwhelming trip through the human emotions.

0RVFRZ JOACHIM KÜHN & ALEXEY KRUGLOV Joachim Kühn’s finger is always on the pulse of the times, and so it is no surprise that he repeatedly seeks the company of visionary young musicians. When Joachim Kühn received the invitation from the Goethe Institute to play two concerts in Russia, he immediately did some research on the scene there. He contacted his friend, the author Marc Sarrazy, who was working on a book about Russian jazz at the time, and asked for his advice. He recommended one name in particular to Kühn: Alexey Kruglov. This saxophonist, born in 1979, is considered to be one of the greatest Russian jazz talents. Kühn saw himself in Kruglov right away – someone who thought the same way musically, a wild young man whose playing impressed as much with power and explosiveness as with sophistication and soul.

The album was recorded in just four hours – almost all first takes. “It’s the feeling that counts,” says Kühn of the recording session. 7RJHWKHU $JDLQ GEORGE MRAZ & EMIL VIKLICKY Emil Viklicky, the 65 year-old "patriarch of Czech jazz piano", as the London Evening Standard puts it, makes his ACT debut on "Together Again". Not only the best jazz pianist in the country, he is also one of the most celebrated film music composers, one of the most formative teachers, one of the most important neoclassical composers, and for a time after the fall of Communism the president of the Czech Jazz Society. It was there that he met his former countryman again, who had chosen the other path from the same starting point: the bassist four years his senior, George Mraz. Both left Czechoslovakia to study at Berklee in the USA, but unlike Viklicky, Mraz did not return after the suppression of the Prague Spring, but instead went to the US, via Germany, to launch his career. He now has credits on almost 1,000 records and CDs. A new Czech way of jazz, fresh ideas on traditional foundations and not least of all two of the most remarkable voices of jazz can be discovered on "Together Again". Better late than never.

$YLJQRQ DQG $IWHU 9ROXPH STEVE LACY More highlights from solo soprano saxophone concerts, starting off with the three short versions of Billy Strayhorn tunes which opened his first solo concert (Avignon 1972). Excellent versions of 'Moms', 'Pops' and 'The Dumps' were performed two years later at the same venue. A 1975 Paris concert resulted in the only known recording of 'Slabs', a second recording of 'The Wool', and definitive performances of 'Torments' and 'The New Duck'. From Edmonton in 1976 comes an unusual performance of 'Coastline', and a fine one of the rarity 'Hooky'. In conclusion, there is a definitive 1977 version of 'Snips' from Köln. All analogue concert recordings. 75 minutes - all previously unissued.

:KLWH 6WULQJ V $WWDFKHG STEVE BERESFORD & NIGEL COOMBES These 1979 duo concert performances were generally considered, by a handful of people, to be the most significant advance in violin & piano music for around 200 years. Eugene Chadbourne considers the music to be demented, so you know it must be very special. He went on to say: 'These duets are, above all, truly enjoyable to listen to. OSTAD ELAHI Nour Ali Elahi—widely known as Ostad Elahi (1895-1974)—was a modern thinker and mystic, a distinguished musician, and heir to an age-old tradition of spirituality. He was born in an environment where for centuries the practice of sacred music had been a part of daily life. From early childhood, he manifested an exceptional aptitude and gift for music, particularly on the tanbur, a Kurdish lute that was the choice instrument of the tradition he inherited.
