Mask Dance BLACK STRING New sounds from the ancient instruments of Korea: Black String create a unique musical language drawing on Korean traditional music, jazz and free improvisation. Yoon Jeong Heo, the bandleader, instigator and passionate driving force behind Black String, is a specialist on the geomungo (a long-board six-string zither played with a bamboo stick). The instrument is at the very heart of Korean musical tradition, with a role comparable to that of the piano in the West. Heo doesn’t just carry the tradition, she is on a mission to extend it, to bring it to life by connecting it with other music. Korean music is a remarkable sound-world. In the words of American composer Alan Hovhaness “It is one of the most expressive music types in the world, majestic and free. The naturalness and mysteriousness of its melodies are unmatched by any other music in the world.” What Black String have done is to create an astonishing coalescence of the old and the new. Theirs is a captivating sound world where power and beauty are both present in every moment.

Family Tree GREGORY PRIVAT TRIO The musical tradition of his native Martinique is, perhaps unsurprisingly, one of the defining strands in the musical DNA of pianist Grégory Privat, who was born there in 1984. He is the youngest and latest of the exceptional pianists in the ACT family of artists, and on his debut album on the label, “Family Tree” he demonstrates that this exalted company is precisely where he belongs. With Grégory Privat, another strong personality is stepping forward into the spotlight of the international jazz scene. “Family Tree” singles him out as being in the foremost rank of creative talents who use all the musical means at their disposal to create a form of jazz which is modern and universal, while emphasizing its individual expression, and also its antecedents. On this album he has used the world language of music - and his own authentic and persuasive Caribbean accent - to tell new and completely magical stories.

Bix - A Tribute to Bix Beiderbecke ECHOES OF SWING Bix Beiderbecke's life-story was so tragic, it still has the power to affect one deeply. However, in his case, what remains alongside the confused heap of anecdotes and hearsay are his recordings, all of them made within in a span of just five remarkable years. Here we enter the real world of Bix Beiderbecke, a universe created by a mind of a superior order. Bix's world is filled with clarity and bathed in light. It was clear to everybody involved in this project that a slavish recreation of the masterworks of the past would be off-limits. New ways needed to be found to bring the musicians and listeners closer to Beiderbecke's life, to the man himself. So a group of very different musicians was assembled – not entirely at random - to undertake this project. Each of them brought his or her strong individual personality, in order to illuminate the subject from their own particular angle. It would be quite wrong, however, to see this album as an unified and ready-made artistic product from just one drawing board. This is a balanced collection of completely individual contributions, which add up to a whole that is far greater than the sum of its parts.

Americas ENRICO PIERANUNZI & BRUNO CANINO Two absolutely superb piano players from different musical worlds: Bruno Canino, as a representative of art music, and Enrico Pieranunzi, as a representative of jazz. Two Americas, the Northern one and the Southern one, and some of the greatest composers from both.
Label: CAM Jazz File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: CAMJ7907-2 Barcode: 8052405142245 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Enrico Pieranunzi - piano Bruno Canino - piano
The Americas project has been conceived for two pianos intertwining like cultures and musical worlds do. Here, between Canino and Pieranunzi, it matters little who is playing “what” and “when”. What one is listening to is the search for sonic beauty, starting from the romantic Argentina by Carlos Guastavino through the stylised though forceful Cuba depicted by Aaron Copland in Danzón Cubano and the innovative tango and milonga by Astor Piazzolla. And then there is the ragtime by William Bolcom and George Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm”. Is it a journey? A passionate dialogue? Or a tale? Whatever the image this record conjures up in listeners’ minds, Americas is definitely great music, confident that culture is not entrenching in what one already knows but breaking conventions, boundaries, mutual inflexibility. Like Bruno Canino and Enrico Pieranunzi did by playing face to face, each backed up by his own strong cultural background and, for this very reason, splendidly creative and versatile. Track listing: 1. Muchacho Jujeno 2. Danzon Cubano 3. Fuga Y Misterio 4. Old Adam 5. Las Ninas De Santa Fe 6. Milonga Del Angel 7. I Got Rhyrhm Variations 8. La Muerte Del Angel
