European Radio Studio Recordings 1964 ALBERT AYLER QUARTET Albert Ayler (1936-1970) was a jazz genius. whose story has the status of tragic myth – myth which, as often happens, is informed by truth. He pioneered free jazz on tenor saxophone, creating generations of disciples, beginning with John Coltrane. In his ecstatic soundworld, he forged connections between the furthest reaches of 60s avantgardism, and the music's beginnings in New Orleans, re-igniting its creative impulses. But free jazz was never a commercially viable form: when Ayler died he had won some critical recognition, but none from the jazz public. 1964 was Ayler's annus mirabilis. The epochal Spiritual Unity, featuring a trio with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray, instituted his connection with ESP-Disk, consolidated by New York Eye and Ear Control, Spirits Rejoice, and Bells. In summer 1964, trumpeter Don Cherry joined Ayler's group, and his dancing faux-naïve style provided an inspired contrast to the leader. In September, the new quartet was invited for a brief Scandinavian tour which extended to the Netherlands. It resulted in the two legendary sessions reissued here. – Andy Hamilton, January 2016

In the Corner of the Eye CHRISTY DORAN These 10 tracks are taken from two long out of print early 90s Hat releases by the Irish avant jazz guitarist - the solo record What A Band and the duos title Phoenix. The music herein represents some of the most visceral, experimental and lyrical performances in Doran's five decade career and give a fascinating insight into a more intimate side of his artistry. Despite the passage of time what’s most striking about In The Corner Of The Eye is just how innovative Doran’s music sounds today, a quarter of a century later. In The Corner Of The Eye is a thrilling affirmation of Doran’s status as one of contemporary music’s most significant acoustic and electric guitarists - on either side of the Atlantic.

Stones Roland DAHINDEN & Hildegard KLEEB Since 1987, this husband and wife duo have occupied a space sitting astride the fields of jazz improvisation and contemporary classical music. The likes of Cage, Wolff, Lucier and Oliveros have written music for them, and Dahinden is recognised for several collaborative efforts with Anthony Braxton, but this album recorded for Swiss radio in October 2015 features entirely their own compositions. "The music of Roland Dahinden and Hildegard Kleeb has grown from a combination of individual virtuosity, a shared life, a special environment and the gradual mutation and transformation of things in time. Stones is the expression of all of those things as well as a very special musical conception that generates different patterns, cycling forwards and backwards, inwardly and outwardly." – Stuart Broomer, February 2016

Live ELLERY ESKELIN TRIO WILLISAU New York free improv saxophonist Ellery Eskelin is no stranger to the Hatology label, which has been documenting his outpourings for many a year. This live recording follows on from the Trio New York albums, but with Gerry Hemingway replacing Gerald Cleaver on drums. When one third of a trio is changed, the entire group sound can change with it, hence the new trio is now identifiable as the Trio Willisau, the recording having taken place at the Swiss festival at Willisau last year. An exemplary album of spontaneously interactive music-making, inspired by the great jazz tradition. "Gary’s nearly telepathic musical mind along with Gerry Hemingway’s absolutely unique approach to the drums infused the music this evening with a very special and rare chemistry. It was a great pleasure for me and I hope you enjoy listening." - Ellery Eskelin, November 2015
