Havana-Paris-Dakar ALUNE WADE & HAROLD LOPEZ-NUSSA This encounter between the brilliant nomad of Senegalese music and the Cuban piano prodigy reflects a stimulating adventure. With solar rhythms, pulsating melodies and tracks moving from cha-cha-cha through rumba, salsa and even chaâbi, Africa takes on the colours of Cuba and Latin jazz. With support from high-flyers, the two leaders are writing a new chapter in the already rich story of the musical exchange between Africa and the Caribbean. Guests include Sara Tavares, Aziz Sahmaoui, Wolfgang Muthspiel and Orchestra Aragon. Senegalese Alioune Wade alias ALUNE is a virtuoso bass player and a singer with the voice of an angel. He has been the bass player for versatile artists like Ismael Lo, Youssou N'Dour, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Bobby McFerrin, Mamani Keita, Henri Dikongue, Joe Zawinul, to mention a few. Harold Lopez-Nussa is the Cuban hotshot pianist with three previous releases through Harmonia Mundi. A player of astonishing gifts, combining dazzling technique and an abundance of soul, López-Nussa has fully integrated his classical training and love of the jazz continuum with his Cuban roots

Akö BLICK BASSY After 10 years of performing with Macase, an inventive jazz fusion group with three singers, Blick grew frustrated with the lack of infrastructure for an artist in Cameroon and decided to move to Paris. It was there, in 2005, that Blick started his solo career, releasing his debut album Léman in 2009, and following it up with Hongo Calling in 2011. As with all albums from Blick Bassy, Akö sees the artist maintain a connection with his Cameroonian roots and the bassa language that he has been a champion of. The result is the most intimate album of Blick's career, and an opportunity to hear an artist perform with little pretence. As adept at bluesy finger-picking, jazz riffs or complex melodic patterns that reveal his Cameroonian roots, Blick proves himself to be a great blues player. On Akö, he recruited Clément Petit (cello), Fidel Fourneyron (trombone) Olivier Ker Ourio (harmonica) and Nicolas Repac (samples) to accompany his voice and guitar.

On a Clear Day ANTHONY STRONG Sharply-dressed Brit jazz songster Anthony Strong made a good impression with his debut album Stepping Out, and is back with a brassy big band beast of a new record in the shape of On a Clear Day. As Anthony says... “In mid-2013, whilst touring my last record, I started compiling a list of songs that would form the basis of my new record. I’d played a handful of big band shows over the last year, and the response was always staggering; It was settled, my next album would be for big band. I settled on a mix of standards, covers and some originals. Similar in approach to ‘Stepping Out’, but this time, I wanted more “POW!” to the sound and I wanted to stretch out more as an arranger and as a singer. It’s been an incredible journey, and two years later, “that list”, has turned into a completed album. I’m very proud of “On A Clear Day” - it’s the album I’ve always wanted to make. I thank Naïve for letting me ‘do my thing’ and I hope you enjoy listening…” Anthony Strong plays Cheltenham Jazz Festival on 1st May and Ronnie Scott's on 24th May.

Night and Day VINCENT HERRING Vincent Herring, one of the great jazz saxophonists of our time, matches his soulful, expressive playing with one of the baddest trumpet players around, Jeremy Pelt, in a quintet that also features the hard-driving rhythm section of Mike LeDonne, Brandi Disterheft and Joe Farnsworth. It’s a group of musicians that Herring knows well and there is an obvious rapport and chemistry from the very first note of the funky bebop opener, “Grind Hog’s Day”. Herring was Cedar Walton’s saxophonist for more than 20 years and he remembers him with Walton’s Latin-tinged “Theme for Jobim” and Mike LeDonne’s poignant dedication, “Walton”. Vincent remarks, “All of us are Cedar’s musical children. I wish we could have played this one for him.”

There are blistering hard bop anthems, too, like Herring’s original “The Adventures of Hyun Joo Lee” and Donald Byrd’s classic “Fly, Little Bird, Fly”. The full spotlight is on Vincent on a handful of quartet tunes that include “The Gypsy”, which is something of an “alto saxophone classic” made famous by Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt and Phil Woods. Herring loves to play this one live and he give it an unforgettably moving reading. The other quartet numbers include Tex Allen’s beautiful “There Is Something about You (I Don’t Know)”, the bluesy “Wabash” by Vincent’s closest stylistic model and exemplar, Cannonball Adderley, and Cole Porter’s jubilant title track “Night and Day”. Herring also contributes the infectious, closing blues, “Smoking Paul’s Stash”. Vincent Herring is modern jazz at its best — unpretentious, smart, and timeless. Track listing: 1. Grind Hog’s Day (Gary Fisher) 6:52 2. Night and Day (Cole Porter) 5:22 3. The Adventures of Hyun Joo Lee (Vincent Herring) 4:44 4. Walton (Mike LeDonne) 6:23 5. The Gypsy (Billy Reid) 7:22 6. Latina CRISTINA PATO On her new recording, Latina, the tremendous Galician bagpiper and pianist Cristina Pato provides a diverse program of musical styles performed by an expert group of musicians fluent in jazz and folkloric music. The concept for Pato’s Latina stemmed from her fascination with the word and what it has come to mean. In the same way that Latin based languages have spread widely, the musical elements of Latin cultures have been propagated across continents. Through her musical investigations, Pato discovered the recurrent use of a 6/8 pattern (six beats of quarter notes in a waltz-like feel) from the tarantellas of Italy all the way to the Afro-Peruvian style of landó on the Pacific coast of South America. For Pato, finding the connections between these diverse cultures has helped her to find her own more positive meaning to a term by which she found herself constantly defined, Latina.

Originally hailing from the northwestern province of Galicia in Spain, Pato has become something of a sensation since arriving in the United States. She has performed regularly with her own ensemble and released a recording (Migrations, 2012). Pato has become a member of Yo Yo Ma’s celebrated Silk Road Ensemble, which has toured the world.

The Talk of the Town Live at the Bimhuis
SAL MOSCA Some artists never receive the credit they deserve during their lifetime. Some may be go-getters with dreams of the big time, but many fly under the radar, doing their work in their own time, only allowing true aficionados or lucky, open-eared listeners into their world. Pianist Sal Mosca was definitely one of the latter, a master musician who perfected his craft and whose work has gone mostly unnoticed, until recently. Sunnyside Records is proud to present a wonderful document and a true testament to the extraordinary talents of the great Sal Mosca, a live recording spanning two discs entitled The Talk of the Town, taken from a performance on November 14, 1992 at the highly regarded Bimhuis in Amsterdam.

Mosca was a protégé of the legendary pianist Lennie Tristano, whose legacy lived on through his pupils, most notably saxophonists Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh, with whom Mosca developed long-lasting bonds. He played with Konitz from the 1950s through the 1970s and sporadically with Marsh in the 1950s and then once again in the 1980s. Throughout his career, Mosca was proudly independent. He turned down recording deals from famous labels and producers, only releasing a handful of recordings on small labels. He also generally stayed away from the spotlight, preferring to remain at his Mt. Vernon studio where he worked and taught. Track listing: CD 1 1. Ghost of a Chance 5:58 / 2. Roof Fool MICHEL WINTSCH Born in Switzerland in 1964, Michel Wintsch succumbed to music as a child. Even then he refused the limits of what the schools teach. As time went by, the piano became a daily delight, a form of asceticism essential to his well-being. Creativity became a way of life. He has worked for the cinema (notably for the Swiss director Alain Tanner), for radio, television and the theatre. He put the writings of Marguerite Yourcenar to music and composed the opera "Ma Barker". His first live appearances were with the rock group "Monkey's Touch", which toured the circuit regularly in the 80s. He now plays numerous gigs and concerts with musicians who experiment with improvised music, including Fred Frith, Han Bennink, Martin Schütz, Michel Doneda, Ray Anderson, etc, and his regular trio he co-founded with American percussionist and composer Gerry Hemingway, and Swiss bassist Bänz Oester. These myriad encounters, exchanges and tours have given the music of Michel Wintsch a highly personal, unmistakable note.

"There's a mysterious poetry here, then, one in which chance sounds and odd titles (as likely elusive as allusive) become vital components of the music's compelling drama, each listener free to find his or her own particular moments and resonances. Those usually unwanted sounds (avoided, discarded) are intimacies, sudden harbingers of the instant of inspiration and creativity, subtle, elusive gestures, moving in many directions at once, inviting the listener in." – Stuart Broomer Track listing: 1. "Indeed, there’s an increased sense of assurance within the band here. Whether it’s the smaller lineup or the additional time the musicians have spent with another, the performances are more purposeful and brisk...In fact, the band feels more inspired and daring, as if the greater rigor and precision has amplified boldness. “With continuous cooperation our work together goes deeper, which means we get to work on the micro level, our perception is more differentiated, allowing us to take risks and to consciously provoke musical happenings,” he says. “To surprise each other is getting harder, but it’s still a big component of our music. These moments of surprise are important as they might trigger something unforeseeable in the fellow musicians. With this process each musician causes a musical reaction which may lead to new discoveries.” New discoveries that are truly alluring prospects." – Peter Margasak Track listing: 1. The Lafayette Suite LAURENT COQ The Lafayette Suite is French piano player Laurent Coq’s new album, co-signed with American saxophonist Walter Smith III. It was recorded in New York in September 2014 with a quartet featuring Joe Sanders on acoustic and electric basses and drummer Damion Reid. “If the French jazz scene is exciting today, it’s due in good part to piano player Laurent Coq” according to Télérama, which praises the pianist’s creativity, his striking originality as a composer, as well as the rigor and inspiration of his improvising. A sideman with saxophonists Julien Lourau and Pierrick Pedron or singer Elisabeth Kontomanou in the past, Laurent Coq co-lead the project “Rayuela” with alto player Miguel Zenon, and recorded several trio and quartet albums under his own name, garnering much praise from reviewers.

Lafayette was a young aristocrat who left France in 1777 at only nineteen years old to fight alongside the American Insurgents against the British. This extraordinary adventure serves as inspiration for the ten chapters suite that Laurent and Walter co-wrote, each musician writing half of the songs. Through his rare commitment, Lafayette embodies the audacity and the capacity to dive into the unknown - qualities that jazz musicians have always strived to develop - and he symbolizes better than anybody else the friendship between France and America. Solo 1954-1961 THELONIOUS MONK To many, Thelonious Sphere Monk is a piano genius of unique and exceptional talent. In terms of his rich harmonic inventiveness, his touch on the keys, the way he wove together a meticulous and forceful rhythmic framework with his left hand, his stylistic boldness, his sense for improvisation and his dense, bold sound, Monk is a unique and immediately recognisable pianist. Unlike a number of his contemporaries, Monk recorded relatively infrequently. From 1947 (the date of his first session in his own name) to 1971 (the date of his last session), he released 25 original studio albums and made just four official solo recordings, of which three form the basis for this double album - The Prophet (Swing Records, 1954); Himself (Milestone Records, 1957); In San Francisco (Milestone Records, 1959). This collection thus brings together for the first time all the solo pieces recorded by Monk from 1954 to 1961 (Studio and Live) + a few rare tracks not featured on the original albums.

Learning by doing: In the eighties Stefan Winter volunteered for a record company to learn autodidactically the profession as music producer. At the time a demo tape of the young Steve Coleman arrived, nobody showed any interest. During Stefan Winter's first stay in New York City (1984) he jumped at the opportunity and offered Steve Coleman a record deal. This was the hour of birth of the debut recording with the core musicians of the later named "M-Base Collective" and at the same time of the label JMT (Jazz Music Today). Right after the first record Winter started working with Greg Osby, Cassandra Wilson, Robin Eubanks, Gary Thomas, Gery Allen and many others like Kelvin Bell, Kevin Bruce Harris, Marvin "Smitty" Smith and Terri Lyne Carrington. It is historical certainty that these works were recorded mainly in the eighties, but as a listener one can hardly believe it. Each album offers a new inspiring approach to making music which is still characteristic today. Listen to the "M-Base" not to rest on tradition, but to see these artists experience as a sound basis for the future. This compilation is the second release in the Winter & Winter Jubilee Edition, celebrating the labels' 30th anniversary. Track listing: 1. The Art Tatum Buddy DeFranco Quartet ART TATUM & BUDDY DEFRANCO The complete original quartet session showcasing the brilliant Art Tatum with clarinet player Buddy DeFranco, plus Red Callender on bass, and Bill Douglass on drums. It was the only collaborative recording date by Tatum and DeFranco. The master takes were originally issued as The Art Tatum-Buddy DeFranco Quartet on Verve MGV-8213. For this edition, we have added all three existing alternate takes, as well as unaccompanied piano versions by Tatum of three of the album’s tunes. This music constitutes one of the various pairings of Tatum with other jazz greats produced by Norman Granz in the last years of the pianist’s life. Tatum was seriously ill at that time and neglected by record companies due to stylistic changes in the music industry. He would die on November 5, 1956 at the age of 47.

Heath Common is a songwriter, poet and performance-artist from northern England. Long championed for his Beat poetry and, conversely, for his creation of a unique musical sound - recently described by the celebrated author, journalist and DJ Mick Middles as being "unlike any other in today's music business - absolutely fantastic", Common is a difficult act to nail. Some clues do lie however in his tales of a whole other bunch of heroes, all of whom have significantly impacted on Heath Common's life and all of whom have blessed this lucky lad with what he terms 'Encounters With Light'. "Heath Common is utterly inspired and he comes to us as refreshingly original as once were Ivor Cutler, Syd Barrett, Lol Coxhill and their luminous ilk." R2 magazine Track listing: 1. Icarus 2.
