Imagine That DANIEL FREEDMAN One of the most in-demand drummers in New York – tapped by Angélique Kidjo, Sting and Anat Cohen – Daniel Freedman presents his third album as a leader, the rhythmically infectious Imagine That. The release draws on a world of music: tune-rich originals that channel African, Middle Eastern, Latin and Indian grooves, as well as an astoundingly fresh version of a rarely covered Radiohead song (“Codex”). Freedman, born and bred in New York City, leads an international quintet that features guitarist-vocalist Lionel Loueke (from Benin), keyboardist Jason Lindner (Brooklyn), bassist Omer Avital (Israel) and percussionist Gilmar Gomes (Brazil). Benin-born vocal star Angélique Kidjo, with whom Freedman has toured the world as drummer in her band, sings “Baby Aya,” a dancing lullaby he wrote for his infant daughter.

Saturday Songs CHRIS CHEEK The tremendously talented saxophonist/composer Chris Cheek has come to feel at home in a variety of musical contexts, from the infectious grooves of Brooklyn Boogaloo Blowout to the challenging global music of Guillermo Klein. Weaned on rock and country, Cheek has always been drawn to the guitar and its openness of sound, the plugged-in aspects of the electric guitar and bass being literal driving elements of his ensemble’s sound. The fret masters that he enlists for the recording include guitarist Steve Cardenas, pedal steel expert David Soler and electric bassist Jaume Llombard. The musical polymath Jorge Rossy rounds out the ensemble on drums, vibes and marimba. The addition of the vibes and marimba added a certain flexibility that Cheek enjoyed, these fixed pitch instruments blended well with the non-fixed pitch of the pedal steel.

The pieces that Cheek brought to record come from various inspirational sources. A handful of pieces utilize a method of symmetry in composing where Cheek takes changes and/or melody from well-known compositions and rearranges them to create all new pieces, mainly through mirroring. Other pieces come from other practices and inspirations, ranging from rock progenitors to ancient calculating methods. Whether from reworking other tunes or studies on ancient civilizations, Chris Cheek has found inspiration in the craftsmanship of generations of incredible artists and artisans. He has put his craftsmanship on full display on Saturday Songs, a heartfelt and, occasionally, raucous celebration of music that moves the listener. Track listing: 1. String Finger 2. Ginger Something 3. Eye Factory 4. Bucky's Blues 5. Either Way 6. Slow Ships 7. Saturday Song 8. Alhambros 9. Forever Green 10. Strawberry Jam 11. While You Sleep 12. Windmill Hill

In a Romantic Mood OSCAR PETERSON LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LPs 180 gram VINYL – AUDIOPHILE PRESSING INCLUDES FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD To limit a pianist like Oscar Peterson – who is mostly known for his swinging style – to playing straight melodies on what in the mid-fifties was called a “mood” album, seems an unlikely possibility. However, like many other jazz pianists of the period, Peterson was a lover of good melodies, and also enjoyed playing them with subtle embellishment. Oscar’s first experience with strings took place in 1954 with the album co-led by Buddy DeFranco performing Gershwin tunes, with arrangements by Russell Garcia. Peterson was so enthusiastic about the sound of the strings that he immediately asked Garcia to prepare an album just for him: In a Romantic Mood. There, he played standards backed by a large orchestra including strings and harp.
