Dedication JUSTIN KAUFLIN Produced by Quincy Jones, Dedication is the Jazz Village debut by piano prodigy Justin Kauflin. The album features twelve original compositions by Kauflin. His style embodies — without being derivative — the "quiet fire" lyricism of Bill Evans (whom Kauflin credits as his "biggest influence at age 14"), the nimble and mercurial qualities of Bud Powell, the genial melodiousness of Herbie Hancock and a bit of Dave Brubeck's gregarious percussiveness. Kauflin's side men on the album are Billy Williams on drums, Chris Smith on bass, Matt Stevens on guitar and Etan Haziza on nylon guitar. Kauflin is also the subject of the award-winning documentary Keep On Keepin' On, which chronicles his mentorship and friendship with the legendary musician and teacher Clark Terry. The film won Best New Documentary Director and the Heineken Audience Award at New York's prestigious Tribeca Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Boulder Film Festival.

Bird Calls RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA Through a series of critically acclaimed releases over the past decade, saxophonist and composer Rudresh Mahanthappa has explored the music of his South Indian heritage and translated it through the vocabulary of his own distinctive approach to modern jazz. On his latest release, Bird Calls, Mahanthappa trains his anthropological imagination on an equally important cultural influence: the music of Charlie Parker. With a stellar quintet of forward-thinking musicians, which includes some long-time collaborators as well as 20-year-old trumpet prodigy Adam O’Farrill, Mahanthappa offers an inspired examination of Bird’s foundational influence and how it manifests itself in a decidedly 21st-century context. Though it pays homage to one of jazz’s Founding Fathers and arrives at the outset of Charlie Parker’s 95th birthday year, Bird Calls is not a tribute album in the traditional sense. There isn’t a single Parker composition to be found on the album, which consists entirely of new music penned by Mahanthappa for the occasion. But Bird’s DNA is strongly present in every one of these pieces, each of which takes a particular Parker melody or solo as its source of inspiration.

Kind of Cool WOLFGANG HAFFNER Drummer Wolfgang Haffner is one of Germany's most successful jazz-band leaders, in addition to contributing his skills as a musician on over 400 albums. Here he defines his take on the Cool Jazz sound. Three main pillars define "Kind of Cool": First of all, "cool“ jazz tunes had to be on it. "So What" for example, the opener of "Kind of Blue", and "Django", the perhaps best known composition by John Lewis, from the first album of his Modern Jazz Quartet. Secondly, standards were chosen from different styles that lent themselves to a "cool" interpretation. The most logical choice was "Autumn Leaves", made famous by the versions crafted by Cannonball Adderley with Miles Davis in 1958 and by Bill Evans in 1959. The Broadway ballad "My Funny Valentine" from 1937 also became a modern jazz standard thanks to the recordings made by Chet Baker and Miles Davis. And Billy Eckstine's "Piano Man" can be considered one of the "coolest" numbers made with the Kansas City sound of Count Basie; the two recorded it in 1959. Finally, Wolfgang Haffner contributed three of his own compositions that fit into the programme.

Haffner has a veritable all-star band at his side for "Kind of Cool". The 83 year-old trumpeter Dusko Goykovich actually played with the fathers of cool and modern jazz like Miles Davis, Art Blakey and Chet Baker. Pianist Jan Lundgren has a profound mastery of the Great American Songbook. The vibraphone has a special role on "Kind of Cool" and Christopher Dell, the virtuoso, avant-garde all-rounder among vibraphonists meets the challenge with aplomb. Finnish saxophonist Jukka Perko takes on the role of Paul Desmond, while e.s.t. bassist Dan Berglund helps Haffner provide the relaxed groove. Track listing: 1. Hippie (Wolfgang Haffner) 5:39 2. Three RANDI TYTINGVAG The Norwegian singer-songwriter Randi Tytingvåg has the power to light up audiences with her music. It is feel-good music in the best sense of the term, with oodles of charm. Tytingvåg’s ingredients for her music are many and varied. On her latest album she highlights in particular her singer-songwriter qualities and draws from the roots of American folk and country music. Released on the ACT Music sub label Emotion, Three sees Tytingvåg in an acoustic string trio on a new selection of original compositions and covers (including Gillian Welch's Hard Times and the standards Let It Be Me and Que Sera Sera). Although rooted in jazz, Randi Tytingvåg on this album comes across with a folky, singer-songwriter vibe, her lucid vocals (mostly singing in English) perfectly suited to the slow pace of the material.

Love Looks Good On You RUSSELL MALONE HighNote is happy to welcome Russell Malone, one of the most gifted guitar players to emerge in recent years, to its roster. Russell first worked with master Jazz organist Jimmy Smith in 1988, and between 1990 and 1994 toured with Harry Connick, Jr. During the late nineties Malone toured internationally with Diana Krall, receiving critical acclaim in his role as Diana's right hand both in concert and on her recordings. Malone seems comfortable in a variety of settings, performing with such diverse artists as Branford Marsalis, Bucky Pizzarelli, Jack McDuff, John Hicks, Freddie Cole, Mulgrew Miller, Kenny Barron, Roy Hargrove, Cyrus Chestnut and Patti Austin. Malone was also a featured performer in Robert Altman's 1996 film "Kansas City." From his first recordings as a leader on Columbia in 1992 to his HighNote debut Russell Malone has proven himself to be the consummate musician capable of both swinging hard and caressing a ballad like few guitarists today can.

Swings the Penthouse ERNESTINE ANDERSON Here is the great Ernestine Anderson in the full bloom of youth as you may have never heard her before - live in front of an appreciative audience. This is the 34-year old Anderson singing with exuberance and spontaneity in the intimate setting of Seattle's legendary jazz club, The Penthouse, recorded in 1962. Her first record, Hot Cargo, had come out just a few years prior to this performance, Time Magazine had touted her as the “best new voice in the business…perhaps the best-kept jazz secret in the land” and Down Beat's Critic's Poll had, in 1959, named her the New Star Jazz Singer. On these recordings Ernestine swings and shouts, cajoles and caresses her way through a set list of standards and jazz classics as only she could. And while we are on the subject of best-kept jazz secrets: these recordings are seeing the first light of commercial release. They have never been issued before in any format.

Right Now MATTIA CIGALINI & ENRICO ZANISI By now it is clear that Mattia Cigalini loves to catch his listeners off-guard. The young Italian saxophonists previous recording “Beyond” had increased the level of fusion between jazz and pop by bringing into play songs by Katy Perry, Rihanna, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga, reinterpreted in a definitely original way. On “Right Now”, recorded with Enrico Zanisi, is a return to classical jazz and the traditional saxophone/piano duo. However, Cigalini and Zanisi have found a language of their own, moving along a path that unfolds through eight original tunes.

A 45-minute dialogue, with the saxophonist asking questions and the pianist seeking answers. On the opening track, “The Painter”, the two musicians explore a wide range of colours. Three tracks by Cigalini, “Lost Steps”, “Herr Mann” and “Too Buth”, follow closely: time drawn out and quiet moods predominate, with moments of striking empathy between the two instruments and spaces in which improvisation by the two young talents prevails. “When I Disappear” is the latter jointly-written track that opens the alleged side B of “Right Now”, with peaceful, nocturnal sounds flowing into powerful solos. “Anthem”, “Elisir” and “Singe” are three tracks by Zanisi in which still no frenzy, but rather a search for sounds, voices and an interlocking of instruments can be perceived. There is nothing of the vehemence that two young lions of Italian jazz are supposed to convey, but a pursuit of elegance which is peculiar to more mature composers. If this is the start of two musical careers, there is reason to believe all will go exceptionally well.

What is this Thing Called? JEAN-MICHEL PILC The language of jazz has many dialects. They can be regional, cultural or generational. One could argue that each musician must be responsible for his or her own dialect, if they are to be a truly distinct talent. An original statement, in this case a tune, presented by any individual musician can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. Paris-born, New York City based pianist Jean-Michel Pilc explores this concept in depth on his new solo release, What Is This Thing Called?
Label: Sunnyside File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: SSC1349 Barcode: 016728134927 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Jean-Michel Pilc - solo piano
Under the most optimal conditions, Pilc recorded what amounts to unique themes and variations based on the much-revered Cole Porter chestnut, “What Is This Thing Called Love? Instead of creating a tedious exercise in rehashing similar idea after similar idea, the recording presents a tremendous portrait of the vast musical language Pilc has developed over his three decades as a professional jazz musician. In the end, Pilc came away with thirty different takes on the tune. Included are long improvisations and shorter vignettes, all distinguishable by a particular essence of the original Porter tune in some brilliant fashion, whether it be a hint of melody, a swath of harmonic color or some rhythmic juxtaposition. All of these pieces are completely improvised, and were born in the moment - "Instant Compositions" is how Pilc likes to refer to them. Track listing: 1. C Scale Warm Up / 2. You Are A Creature NICK SANDERS TRIO Pianist Nick Sanders christened his second CD, You Are a Creature (produced by Fred Hersch), with a head-scratcher of a title, but his virtuosity and vision couldn’t be more clear. Throughout the album’s concise but idea-packed thirteen tracks, Sanders continues to hone and evolve his distinctive voice as an instrumentalist and composer as well as the unique collective identity of his trio with bassist Henry Fraser and drummer Connor Baker. You Are a Creature offers further evidence of a major new voice on the modern jazz scene. Sanders’ individual approach and the strikingly singular language developed by the trio have commanded the attention of no less discerning a stylist than pianist Fred Hersch, who not only encouraged Sanders to record his 2013 debut but offered his services as this album’s producer, offering insightful direction but also upping everyone’s game simply by his commanding presence in the studio.

Live in Nashville LAKHA KHAN Lakha Khan, 67 is a sarangi player and vocalist, and perhaps the greatest exponent of the Sindhi sarangi. He was born in the village of Raneri in Jodhpur district, Rajasthan, India into a family of traditional musicians from the Manganiyar community. He was trained at an early age by his father Tharu Khan and later, by his uncle Mohammad Khan, in rendering the compositions of the Multan school of Manganiyars. His first public performances were in the late 60's and 70's under the guidance of the late Komal Kothari, a highly regarded Indian historian and ethnomusicologist. Today, Lakha Khan is one of the last remaining Manganiyars to have mastered this complex instrument and to carry forward the centuries-old musical tradition of Rajasthani folk and Sufi music. He has performed extensively across Rajasthan and India, and internationally in the U.S. and Europe. This album presents the maestro in fine form, recorded in downtown Nashville on his debut US tour in 2013. Lakha Khan's debut release for Amarrass, At Home (AMAR007) received great reviews in the UK world music press:

Merci LP MAGMA 180g VINYL EDITION WITH DOWNLOAD CODE Released in 1985 and dedicated to John COLTRANE, MERCI is the last studio album by MAGMA to be released before Christian VANDER dedicated himself to his new group, OFFERING. Recorded between June 1982 and October 1984 at Studio Davout, with the help of a galaxy of musician friends, MERCI perfectly demonstrates the seamless transition from the electric music of MAGMA to the acoustic serenity of OFFERING. The album is, in effect, divided into two sections. The four opening titles present the MAGMA rhythm'n blues of the early 1980s, a cool, soul-wrapped unit full of melodic richness, and embellished with fabulous brass and vocal arrangements. The final two pieces by contrast are in a stripped-down, purified style which declares what the quest of OFFERING will be to touch the human being in the depths of his soul via a music which has been reduced to its essentials.
