Live at the Olympia - June 27, 2012 The Music and the Film of the Complete Concert
AHMAD JAMAL featuring YUSEF LATEEF Olympia, Paris, 27 June 2012. In this mythical concert hall, the Ahmad Jamal quartet played in telepathic mode to reinvent the Blue Moon repertoire. Then, before giving the audience a transformed rendering of Poinciana, a hit from the Chess era, the pianist brought on stage Yusef Lateef who played with him in the glory days of the Atlantic label. The pioneering world fusion wind player then conjured up some magical moments and took us on one of those mystical journeys to which he has the key. This recording offers the entire historic concert, illuminated by these two jazz greats inspired by groove and the spirit of the sacred. The passing of Yusef Lateef on 23 December, 2013, at the venerable age of 93, adds poignancy to this set, as a testimony to a true jazz legend.

Liberetto II LARS DANIELSSON When soul mates and perfectly matched musicians find one another, they are well advised to stick together. "Liberetto II" by the exceptional Swedish bassist and cellist Lars Danielsson is the living proof. Three years ago he found a quartet with the former e.s.t. drummer Magnus Öström, the British guitarist John Paricelli and most of all as a new dream team duo with Armenian pianist Tigran. It interpreted his compositions and realised his musical ideas more precisely than probably any ensemble before it. On "Liberetto II", Danielsson and his quartet take that energy a step further, exploring new musical dimensions at the borders between chamber jazz, classic and European folk. The melody is always the focus, and the way they develop and creatively manipulate it stands – as Danielsson's title neologism suggests – to equal parts in the formal tradition of European classical music and in the improvisational freedom of jazz.

The Key JERRY LÉONIDE "The Key", the debut album of the Mauritian pianist Jerry Léonide, is the key to a whole world; to the music and joie de vivre of an island paradise 1,700 km from the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Léonide translates the irresistible, bouncingly danceable, clearly African influenced grooves and light and breezy crystal-clear melodies of his homeland into the vocabulary of jazz. He himself says of his debut: "For me 'The Key' is the revelation of Mauritian music before the eyes of the world." His global piano playing enthralled the jury of the "Solo Piano Competition 2013" at the Montreux Jazz Festival so much that they awarded him first prize. "The rhythms and melodies from Mauritius are part of my musical DNA. It's from them that I draw my ideas, and I am sure that they are also where the originality of my music comes from. And I have always been open to jazz, classic and the widest range of traditional music." "The Key" now opens the door to a whole new musical world for a broad audience.

Amalgamations ALI JACKSON The great New York-born, Detroit-raised, drummer Ali Jackson has carved a place for himself alongside the greatest musicians of his generation by being a fantastic instrumentalist and tremendous ensemble member. On his new recording, Amalgamations, Jackson looks to his influences, both musical and personal, to create a program of wide-ranging and exploratory pieces featuring a tremendous cast of his talented friends. Jackson began playing professionally at the age of eleven with his bassist father. Later Wynton Marsalis became an important part of the youngster’s life as a mentor, friend and, later, employer, with whom Jackson has performed as a member of Marsalis’s small ensembles and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

Marsalis is present here along with the constellation of extraordinary talent that Jackson has surrounded himself with from his earliest days behind the kit. Among the other highlighted artists are trombonist Vincent Gardner, saxophonists JD Allen and Ted Nash, pianists Aaron Goldberg, Eldar Djangirov and Jonathan Batiste, and bassists Omer Avital and Carlos Henriquez. Amalgamations presents a variety of musical settings in which Jackson leads ensembles ranging in size from a duo to a quintet. The leader’s design is to provide a “musical canvas” on which his brilliant collaborators can showcase their talents. The compositions were either written or selected to allow the musicians the best setting to really let loose and express themselves. Track listing: 1. ALI GOT RHYTHM 2. CACHITA 3. Post No Bills GREG REITAN Pianist/composer Greg Reitan has led his fantastic trio of bassist Jack Daro and drummer Dean Koba since 1996, formed shortly after their graduation from University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music. Their long and fruitful tenure has created a fantastic partnership, which can be fully enjoyed on their new recording Post No Bills. The recording begins with a moving performance of Keith Jarrett’s “The Mourning of a Star,” which is followed by the introspective “One Day I’ll Fly Away” by the great Joe Sample. Daro’s supple bass playing leads to Reitan’s up-tempo arrangement of the great Victor Young standard “Stella By Starlight.” Horace Silver’s evergreen ballad “Lonely Woman” is tastefully rendered by the ensemble followed by a new, sweeping Reitan waltz entitled “Spring.”
Label: Sunnyside File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: SSC1395 Barcode: 016728139526 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Greg Reitan - piano Jack Daro - bass Dean Koba - drums
The program continues with spare and heart felt rendition of George Gershwin’s “I Loves You, Porgy.” Chick Corea’s “Windows” follows with its tempered yet dynamic energy, which contrasts nicely with Denny Zeitlin’s ballad from his 1965 album Carnival entitled “After The War,” which is a lilting piece of musical poetry that crescendos into swing before evaporating into the ether. The title track begins softly and brightens into a colorful workout. The recording closes with another new Reitan original, “Solitude,” a tasteful piece featuring Daro’s bass work. The ensemble’s new Post No Bills has provided a perfect example of their strength as a group and as masterful interpreters of the jazz canon.

National Anthem of Unknown Country RABBITOO A five-piece band led by guitarist and composer Motohiko Ichino that brings together musical talents from varied jazz careers, Rabbitoo are fast becoming one of the freshest and coolest bands on the Japanese scene. While all the musicians have solid jazz credentials (three have graduated from Berklee College of Music, and different members have played with the likes of Terumasa Hino, Michiyo Yagi, Peter Brotzmann and Ryosuke Hashizume), it's also clear that this group of musicians have musical interests that go beyond jazz, with the album also embracing elements of post-rock and electronica. National Anthem Of Unknown Country is a truly impressive debut and should become one of the year's essential releases.

Fresh MINA AGOSSI Mina Agossi is a real show woman who reveals an assertive personality in her own musical universe, wherein she mixes jazz with rock, pop, African and Eastern sonorities that portray her French-Beninese origins. Over her career Mina has generated a large fanbase, reaching out with rigorous touring and a staedy stream of recording work. Her UK breakthrough came over the course of a three-album stint with Candid. As a singer Mina is as comfortable covering Jimi Hendrix as she is with Billie Holiday. Her husky, mischievous (and multilingual) vocals always beguile, and she is not one afraid to take risks - as her drum and guitars backing demonstrates - no horns or keyboards in this jazz band.

Reliving the Moment Live at the Keystone Korner
CEDAR WALTON The Cedar Walton of 1977-78 was the Cedar Walton of Beyond Mobius, The Pentagon, Firm Roots and Animation. His sympathies at the time ranged from fusion groups to larger ensembles and leading his own quartet featuring the players on this live recording from the Keystone Korner's Rahsaan Roland Kirk Memorial Jazz Festival.
Label: High Note File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: HCD7265 Barcode: 632375726522 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: cristal Cedar Walton - piano Freddie Hubbard - trumpet & flugelhorn Bob Berg - tenor saxophone David Williams - bass Billy Higgins - drums
The quartet, consisting of Cedar, saxophonist Bob Berg, drummer Billy Higgins and bassist David Williams (previously Sam Jones), was an acclaimed group which played and toured together regularly from the late 70s into the early 80s. It was this very same aggregation that backed Abbey Lincoln on her 1980 Muse Records recording, The Maestro. In The Rough Guide to Jazz, author Brian Priestly calls the work of Cedar and Billy Higgins “one of the great rhythm-section partnerships of all time” and called Bob Berg “one of the most gifted of the post-Coltrane saxophonists.” Freddie Hubbard is not usually considered a “regular” with Cedar Walton but their association extends back into the early 1960s Jazz Messengers and Hubbard's 1961 album, Hub Cap. Their comfort level with each other is apparent in Freddie's three tracks and raises the trumpeter's contributions far above that of a mere “guest artist.” Released here for the first time anywhere, these performances bristle with excitement and electricity with all the participants at the peak of their powers. This recording is an important document rescued from oblivion by HighNote Records. Track listing: 1. Midnight Waltz 2. Ugetsu 3. For All We Know 4. Byrdlike 5. Jacob’s Ladder 6. Impressions

JAKI BYARD
Label: High Note File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: HCD7264 Barcode: 632375726423 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: cristal Jaki Byard - solo piano
Jaki Byard always personified the past, present and future of jazz, wherever or whenever one might have been fortunate enough to experience his challenging ideas. An icon in the history of jazz, Jaki was Art Tatum, Earl Hines, Bud Powell, Ran Blake, Cecil Taylor and Bill Evans, all in one. Yet, like these fellow icons, he was his own uncompromising, unique, living entity. He isn’t a household name, but most likely his low profile is the result of an irresistible need to constantly reinvent himself, the sure sign of the consummate artist. Here is the third instalment of HighNote’s Jaki Byard retrospective, Live at the Keystone Korner. As Byard introduces the selections on display is the irrepressible wit for which he was so well known. The selections themselves contain a few signature Byard specialities and a couple of songs not currently available by the pianist. HighNote’s collection of beautifully restored tapes leaves us with a rich history of Byard’s music, his life and times, allowing us to experience the intense struggle of a dedicated artist to keep his essence alive while still making us laugh with him along life’s corridor. There will never be anyone who can take his place. Track listing: 1. Hello Young Lovers 2. In Your Own Sweet Way 3. Family Suite 4. Spanish Tinge No. 1 5. Day Dream / Caravan Medley 6. I Love You, Yes I Do BARBARA MORRISON Barbara Morrison has been featured on over 20 recordings, choosing her repertoire from a wide array of genres from traditional jazz and blues to gospel and pop. Her powerful voice, with its two-and-a-half-octave range, allows Ms. Morrison to belt out down-home, soul-stirring blues in a manner which places her firmly in the tradition of Etta Jones, Helen Humes, Irene Reid, and Dinah Washington. Her impassioned renditions of favorite torch songs reveal a consummate musicianship and a firm grasp of a song’s deepest meaning. Over the years, Ms. Morrison has performed with legends such as Gerald Wilson, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, James Moody, Ron Carter, Etta James, Esther Phillips, Jimmy Smith, Dr. John, Kenny Burrell, Terence Blanchard, Joe Sample, Cedar Walton, Tony Bennett, and Keb’ Mo. Actuality JIM BLACK TRIO With Jim Black we are used to the most different sounds. Paul Motian is one of his main influences, therefore it is hardly surprising that he now leads his own troika of piano, bass and drums. Similarly to Motian's role in the famous Bill Evans Trio, Jim Black does not find himself in the role of a simple time keeper, but plays on his drums and cymbals melodies interrelating closely with the piano and bass. Black finds with young pianist Elias Stemeseder and bassist Thomas Morgan, who has also worked with Motian, the perfect line-up. The three musicians open their innermost selves and create an intimate dialogue that captivates the listener.

From an innovative percussionist, known to his peers as “the wizard”, this exceptional first solo album, both progressive and dynamic, can take its place alongside the very best of contemporary European jazz. Univers Nino DENIS COLIN & ORNETTE It’s about Nino Ferrer the creator, who as a musical daredevil always eschewed mundanity, but remained a cult figure in the end. It’s to Ferrer that Denis Colin wanted to pay tribute. This open mindedness of Nino has inspired this album as an echo and as a response. His work on Nino’s songs has never intented to be a revival, neither in the arrangments or in the songs themselves. The clarinet player, with a very creative formation capable of making this instrumental texture and vocal expressions, has been well adapted to the rhythm’n’blues tunes of Mirza and Les Cornichons, like the classics of La Rua Madureira and Le Blues des Rues Désertes. The overall work make the album a rich and deep counterpoint, with warm and spiritful compositions like this great pop songs Metronomie, The Garden, Moby Dick, L’Arbre Noir or La Désabusion. It is a network of secret compositions, made of small strings, flaws or breaks which explore the heart of Nino’s repertoire.

You & Lee + Lee Konitz Meets Jimmy Giuffre LEE KONITZ & BILL EVANS PLEASE NOTE: NEW RELEASE DATE, POSTPONED FROM 28 JULY 2 LPs on 1 CD The complete Lee Konitz albums You and Lee (Verve MGVS6131), and Lee Konitz Meets Jimmy Giuffre (Verve MGVS6073). These were Konitz and Bill Evans’ earliest studio collaborations: on the first LP the pianist only played on one of the two sessions (Jim Hall replaced him on the other one), while on the second Evans was featured throughout the entire album. Both works were taped in 1959, and although Konitz and Evans had been previously recorded together in a concert setting, and would be taped in the same fashion during a 1965 European tour, their only other studio LP collaboration was the pianist’s 1977 album Crosscurrents. The great Jimmy Giuffre also participated on both records – on the first as arranger, and on the second as arranger and performer. Includes 20-page booklet.

Complete Live at the Lighthouse '62 + 3 Bonus Tracks
JAZZ CRUSADERS Presented here is the Jazz Crusaders’ complete live LP At the Lighthouse (Pacific Jazz ST-57). Employing a two-horn front line (trombone and tenor saxophone), the group’s sound was rooted in hard bop, with an emphasis on R&B and soul. They would shorten their name to “The Crusaders” in 1971, when they decided to adopt a jazzfunk style. This set is unique among the group’s recordings because of the presence of bassist Victor Gaskin, who replaced The Crusaders’ first bassist, Jimmy Bond. Two songs from the same engagement not present on the original LP (“Penny Blue” and “Boopie”), as well as three tracks from a later session also featuring Gaskin have been added here as a bonus. Includes 12-page booklet.

In 1960, French pianist Jacques Loussier (who is about to celebrate his 80th birthday), along with well-known bassist Pierre Michelot and drummer Christian Garros, made their first attempts to translate the magic of Johann Sebastian Bach’s compositions into the jazz idiom. The albums were so successful that the pianist would repeat the formula many times in subsequent years. This edition compiles the first three volumes of Play Bach (Decca 40.500, 40.502 & 40.507). Also included here is the same trio’s following album, Jacques Loussier joue Kurt Weill (RCA Victor 541.062), on which they perform classic songs by the famous German composer. Diz and Getz LP DIZZY GILLESPIE & STAN GETZ This edition presents the complete original LP Diz & Getz (Norgran MGN-1050/Verve MGV-8141), on which Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz share the frontline backed by a rhythm section led by Oscar Peterson and with Max Roach on drums. Getz and Gillespie had previously recorded two songs together on January 10, 1950, during a crowded session purported to showcase the Metronome poll winners. The songs, “Double Date” and “No Figs”, were both arranged by Pete Rugolo and also included Kai Winding on trombone, Buddy DeFranco on clarinet, Lee Konitz on alto sax, Serge Chaloff on baritone sax, Lennie Tristano on piano, Billy Bauer on guitar, Eddie Safranski on bass, and Max Roach on drums. Solo space, thus, was scarce. Their next collaboration would be the 1953 date featured here, Diz & Getz, which was yet another of Norman Granz’s various attempts to bring together jazz stars of different styles, an idea he also implemented on his live tours of Jazz at the Philharmonic.

Cajueiro MARCIO FARACO France’s most Francophile of Brazilians knows better than anyone how to capture the spirit of the times in words and music, how to sing to us not only of the realities of the world, but also of his passions or just quite simply of life. Accompanied by musicians from both France and Brazil, he regales us with tales of his native Brazil, of his beloved Paris and of the ebb and flow of time. Illuminated by flashes of milonga, samba, jazz and xote, his melodies radiate more than ever with a dulcet air of sweet timelessness.

"For a few years, I’ve had a song in my head about a Brazil which only exists in my memory. When I started recording, it was part of the playlist but had been put on hold as the album title, the idea that brought everything together. In the end, it was in Paris, France, that I planted this essentially Brazilian tree full of meaning. From it, I plucked 11 songs which, when taken as a whole, sketch out the map of each country, both unique in their blend of cultures and rich in their differences. I was able to count on the help of the surprising piano-samba sound of Philippe Baden Powell, the refreshing musette accordion of Lionel Suarez, the wisdom of Laurent Vernerey’s double bass, the joy of Julio Gonçalves, Nicolas Monazaud and Zé Luis Nascimento’s percussion, Gerson Saeki’s sense of swing and the beautiful voice of Sian Pottok. These make up the ingredients of a heart-shaped album named Cajueiro (The Cashew Tree)." Marcio Faraco Track listing: 1. Cajueiro 3'05 2. Paris 3'22 3. Neguinha 4'14 4. Perdão 4'30 5. Cape Verde KODÉ DI DONA Kodé di Dona brings the Funana tradition to life, recounting (both critically and humourously) the hardships of everyday life, to a driving rhythmic backing from José Vaz on the ferrino (iron pipe idiophone), and lively, melodic accordion accompaniments: a rural art fed with mazurka, waltz, quadrille, samba, coladeira... The recordings (16 tracks) were made in Cape Verde in 1995 and were originally released by Ocora Radio France the following year. The 38-page Eng/Fr booklet contains a wealth of information on the artist, the nation, the music.

Mitha Bol Rajasthan Field Recordings Vol.1
VARIOUS ARTISTS Mitha Bol (or sweet verse) - analog recordings made on cassette tape in December 2010 at the artists' homes. The album was nominated for the Best Folk Album of the Year at the 2012 Global Indian Music Awards (GiMA). Featuring six outstanding folk artists, the album showcases the diversity in sounds from Rajasthan. It is proof that traditional music—from bhajans to qawwalis—has been preserved undiluted.

"The album has an unmistakable fidelity of both character and sound. The analog setup we used helped immensely in remaining faithful to this. We found such formidable talent during our first trip, we made two more, notably one in April 2011. By the end, we had recorded more than 50 musicians and had over 1400 minutes of tape. After countless hours spent holed up in the studio digitizing, editing, mixing and mastering, we were ready with a set of field recordings that present the finest and purest in Rajasthani folk. This music isn’t only for the purist, however, as anyone who hears it will know. We also believe it has the power to move people from all age groups and cultures. This is world music, and it deserves a world audience." from Amarrass Records "A heart-worn exile from India, I played these recordings and almost wept. The syncopation of Rajasthani village life, the relaxed perfection of the technicians Amarrass has scouted out, the beauty of their music, all this and more is here. Mitha Bol is easily the best new album I have heard this year." -James Astill (author of The Great Tamasha: Cricket, Corruption, and the Turbulent Rise of Modern India) Track listing: 1. Banko Ghodo Rajasthan Field Recordings Vol.2
VARIOUS ARTISTS Banko Ghodo ("Majestic Horse") is the second volume of field recordings from the Indian desert. The album is dedicated to the memory of Rukma Bai, one of last of the great Manganiyar female folk singers, who passed away shortly after these recordings were made. All tracks on this compilation were recorded in December 20010, often at the artists' homes, as single take, two channel, analog tape recordings. The pure essence of Rajasthani folk. The sleeve notes give insight into the hardships and often tragic circumstances of the musicians involved, whose amateur status in no way belies their extraordinary talents.

Unquestioned master of the cante gitano, a subjective expression for flamenco singing as practised by singers of gypsy origin, Porrina de Badajoz was a prophet only in his own country. He always refused to perform anywhere other than in the land of his birth. The three pillars of flamenco are guitar, dance and song. We have to acknowledge that Porrina brought a particular touch to the cante, giving it his amazing originality. Porrina’s singing remains inimitable and his virtuosity, the fullness of his tessitura and the range of his vocal palette allow him to communicate the whole range of feelings and states of mind.

Its first twenty volumes are now considered works of reference, still definitive today. Le Chant du Monde has entrusted Pablo Garcia with the task of continuing this anthology of heritage initially undertaken by Mario Bois. Pablo Garcia knows all the secrets and arcana of flamenco and has selected for these four new compilations artists who have left an indelible mark on the history of flamenco. La Paquera de Jerez is first and foremost an agile, powerful voice with a quality called « laina », that is high, vibrant, typically Andalucían. But she is also a presence. As she sings her cante, she invites aficionados to enter an uncontrolled, sometimes inhuman world, like a comet transmitting its energy and life force. She offers a fragment of her own story, a whiff of Jerez, her native city.

Canalejas de Puerto Real was as a major artist of the time who has played a considerable part in the spread of flamenco, notably in enhancing the « cante por bulería ». In this he follows « cantaores » like Niño Medinas, Bernardo el de los Lobitos, Manuel Vallejo and especially La Niña de los Peines. We should remember that when the bulería appeared in the late 19th century, it was considered a minor cante, just an accompaniment to a dance. Canalejas managed to dominate flamenco thanks to an exceptionally demanding professionalism.

Great Singers of Flamenco Vol. 24 PEPE PINTO The collection GREAT SINGERS OF FLAMENCO first issued by Le Chant du Monde in 1984 is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary. With a soft voice and fine vocal range, Pepe Pinto’s image is that of a popular singer. If he is not the embodiment of the pure flamenco singer, he did introduce this music to a wide audience. He was a simple man, with a sense of humour. He has admitted that he would have preferred to be an actor, not a singer. This no doubt explains why he wanted to give a theatrical dimension to his performances, whether of flamenco « classics » or of his own compositions of sentimental songs. The latter were all very successful, like Trigo limpio, La chiquita piconera or Toíto te lo consiento.
