I Hear The Sound ARCHIE SHEPP ATTICA BLUES ORCHESTRA On September 9,1971, a riot broke out in Attica Prison, New York State, and quickly spread. Five days later the prison was re-taken by force and 39 people were left dead: 29 prisoners and 10 hostages. At first, the administration tried to blame the guards’ deaths on the rioters, before being forced to renege. In January 1972, Archie Shepp recorded the album Attica Blues in tribute to this rebellion. After the original and the repeat performance at the Palais des Glaces in 1979 of his Attica Blues Orchestra, Archie Shepp in 2012 revived this fantastic ensemble, together with a brilliant and dynamic collective of performers. It is an orchestra which transcends styles and epochs. The band international in scope, combining the extraordinary abilities of great American artists such as: Amina Claudine Myers, Famoudou Don Moye, Ambrose Akinmusire and Reggie Washington, with an array of some of the brightest stars on the European horizon - a 26-piece orchestra which emits a unique generational and cultural ambiance.

Illusions IBRAHIM MAALOUF As in his four previous albums or in the different musical pieces he has composed over the last ten years, Illusions is the fruit of a long mediatation lasting several years around a theme close to his heart: the illusory or true way we look at things. This album was recorded for the first time with members of the group he has been playing with since his first album. Illusions is also a concept album in which Ibrahim decides to have fun, without lingering too long on the feel-good notes, but rather by juggling with the reassuring ones to put them in jeopardy. Illusions is intended to be more fun, more open and less jazzy than his previous work Wind, with a musical colouring that approaches rock or even funk. Illusions is intended to bring people together because it was written for a wider audience. And as always, Ibrahim's signature subtle mix of eastern and western influences permeates the melodies of this composition.

New Eyes on Baroque JEANETTE KOHN & SWEDISH RADIO CHOIR There are many recordings of baroque music – both of the historical sort, and those that take a radical modern approach to the original. On "New Eyes on Baroque", the Swedish soprano Jeanette Köhn chooses to strike a balance between the two. She is assisted in doing so by the proven "Christmas With My Friends" ensemble fronted by Nils Landgren, and the Swedish Radio Choir under the baton of Gustaf Sjökvist. The classically trained singer and the tradition-rich choir have abundant experience performing baroque music, and here they join forces with instrumentalists firmly rooted in jazz. "New Eyes on Baroque" does without grand effects, captivating instead by means of the aura of the compositions that the musicians internalise. Köhn's compassionate voice, the natural sound of the acoustic ensemble and the sonorous Swedish Radio Choir are impactful enough on their own, and prove that it is still possible to lend a new edge to compositions that are centuries old.

The Brandenburg Concert DUSKO GOYKOVICH WITH STRINGS Dusko Goykovich has dreamed, as far back as he can remember, of music, his personal metaphor for life. He left Yugoslavia to try to realise his dreams. In Germany he met Louis Armstrong, Zoot Sims, Lionel Hampton, Hans Koller. Dizzy Gillespie put his bent trumpet into Dusko’s hands and, soon, the young man had also begun long-term friendships with Chet Baker and Miles Davis. He toured in America with Maynard Ferguson and Woody Herman, and uopn returning to Germany cut a host of albums for Enja with Mal Waldron, Nathan Davis, Tete Montoliu, Kenny Drew, Gianni Basso, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Barron, Jimmy Heath, Abraham Burton and many more.

Now, at age 82, Dusko sees another long-nourished dream become reality. Perhaps this project would not have been right for the impetuous young bebopper, but in May of 2013, it became very right. CANNONBALL ADDERLEY SEXTET The complete original album Jazz Workshop Revisited (Riverside RLP9444), one of Cannonball Adderley’s strongest efforts of the early 1960s. Among the LP’s many highlights is the earliest version of Nat’s celebrated tune “The Jive Samba”. Adopted Highway DAVE KING TRUCKING COMPANY Drummer/composer Dave King has become enamored with the concept of bridging the gap between American roots music and the avant-garde. He has created The Trucking Company as a palette for mixing both musical styles and superior musical talents not of the mainstream. As a matter of fact, the ensemble could be seen as the poster child for bands revolting against the academic lean of mainstream jazz, preferring a slant toward the corporeal.The Trucking Company's new recording Adopted Highway was recorded with earthy intentions. The ensemble, featuring guitarist Erik Fratzke, bassist Adam Linz along with saxophonists Chris Speed and Brandon Wozniak, recorded onto two-inch tape providing a warm analog sound along with the immediacy of only being able to do one or two takes per tune.

Stephan Crump brought together Rosetta Trio for the first time in 2005 to record an album of pieces written in the aftermath of 9/11. That “engaging and sublime meeting” of Crump on acoustic bass with guitarists Liberty Ellman and Jamie Fox, produced Rosetta (2006), which was greeted enthusiastically by fans, radio, and the press. “Here is a string ensemble for the new century!" raved Donald Elfman in All About Jazz NY. Their second album, Reclamation (2010), declared “a low-key marvel” (JazzTimes) and noted for its “bareness in emotion” (NPR), was much more than a follow-up effort, though it was the earlier album that gave the trio its name and its mission: to inhabit the dynamic and rhythmic flexibility of a drumless ensemble and embrace its challenges and expanded responsibilities; to reject restrictions of genre; to explore different territories of feel, texture, color; to groove. Recorded after eight years of collaboration and on the heels of a two-week European tour, Thwirl captures Rosetta Trio not only at peak telepathy, but charting new territories of shape and feel. Dialogues LAURENT COQ The French-born pianist Laurent Coq has been an important name in the world of jazz in both Europe and the United States for nearly two decades. His work has traversed the realm of the tradition yet continues to push boundaries. His latest recording – Dialogue – highlights Coq’s unique disposition as he echoes sonorities from jazz’s past while showcasing future talents and creating a unique blend of jazz and West Indian musical styles. Coq has long been fascinated by the possibility and the challenges of performing piano alongside guitar, but the similarities in range, sound, and chording create numerous challenges. Coq found his guitar foil six years ago in a composition class he taught in Paris - Ralph Lavital, son of the famous Guadeloupean guiatrist Tinou Lavital. When the two finally began performing together, Coq wanted to focus on blending jazz with the flavor of the Caribbean. The talented Martiniquais vocalist Nicolas Pelage sings on five tracks.

Mediterranean Sound BELMONDO FAMILY SEXTET Mediterranean Sound marks brothers Lionel and Stéphane Belmondo’s musical reunion as they pay a vibrant tribute to their father Yvan, who has succeeded in passing down his love and knowledge of jazz. Joining forces on an album for the first time, the three Belmondos have recorded as a sextet with the help of guitarist Jean-Philippe Sempere, double-bass player Sylvain Romano and drummer Jean-Pierre Arnaud. This record take them back to their main influences, especially the early ones: modern jazz, feverish East Coast hard bop as well as intricate West Coast arrangements. The Day After THE VOLUNTEERED SLAVES The Day After was originally the name given by the Slaves to their concert on 21 December 2012 organised before the supposed end of the world. Still alive and kicking on 22 December 2012, the band kept the tongue-in-cheek title for their new recording. The ‘day after’ might also be the day after the Slaves’ birthday: ten years of this unique and eccentric group, not taking itself too seriously while cultivating the fashionable musical concept of ‘organised chaos’. Jazz? Not jazz? World? Afrobeat? Hip hop? Rock? Pop? Free? Funk? The band chose a long time ago not to respond to such irritating questions. Meet Me TRICIA EVY A rising star of the vocal jazz scene, Tricia Evy grew up in Guadeloupe. It was there that she developed a passion for music, listening to artists such as Patrick Saint-Eloi (singer in the group Kassav) and George Brassens. Tranz Denied MAGIC MALIK Always an intrepid musical explorer, Magic Malik decided to start messing with electronic music on this new project, alongside DJ Oil, Gilbert Nouno and Hubert Motteau. Between contemporary music, electro, pop and jazz, the new album, Tranz Denied, was essentially composed in studio on a rhythmic base laid out by DJ Oil, on which Magic Malik sings, plays flute, keyboard, bass and guitar. Malik Mezzadri made a name for himself by being a part of some of the most remarkable bands of the last fifteen years. He grew up in Guadeloupe where he began playing flute at the age of 6. He moved to Marseille at 17 and graduated from its Conservatoire with a Flute first prize. Looking for Parker Manu CODJIA / Geraldine LAURENT / Christophe MARGUET It's very much a trio of equals that recorded Looking For Parker, but alto saxophonist Géraldine Laurent sometimes muscles her way out front. This is partly just the nature of the horn, and partly because she plays the same instrument as Charlie Parker, to whose music the record is dedicated. And most of all, Laurent, more than her band mates, clearly derives from the bebop lineage initiated by Parker. Guitarist Manu Codjia is one of the freshest-sounding guitar players anywhere: he clearly owes a debt to Bill Frisell—evident on the crystalline "Out of Nowhere," or in the dreamy opening of "April in Paris"—but also to Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. The guitarist's role is crucial, as he stands in, variously, for the piano and bass on the old Parker quintet recordings. Sometimes he plays a more or less straight combination of the rhythm and harmony instruments of the originals, as on the marvelous "Hot House," where his conservatism encourages particularly adventurous playing from drummer Christophe Marguet. Doce França TRIO ESPERANÇA Trio Esperança is a Brazilian vocal trio, formed in the city of Rio de Janeiro in 1958, by the siblings Mário, Regina and Evinha Correia José Maria. They had several hits in Brazil, such as “Festa do Bolinha” and “Filme Triste” – a version of the pop song Sad Movies (Make Me Cry), released as a single in 1962 – and released albums through Polygram Records, EMI, Universal Music and Philips Records. After releasing 4 albums in France, the Trio Esperança took a break from the music business in 2002. The band returned on stage in 2008. In 2010, the Trio Esperança, composed by Evinha, Regina and Mariza, released a new album De Bach a Jobim on French label Dreyfus Jazz. The disc featured covers of music by The Beatles, Bach, Antonio Carlos Jobim, in addition to original material.
