Pinball MARIUS NESET After Marius Neset's ACT debut Lion, with the Trondheim Orchestra, the move back into a soloist spotlight on Pinball is a timely reminder of why the jazz world pricked up its ears when Neset emerged several years ago. His virtuosity, from the bedrock strength of tone to the torrents of phrasal ideas, extends a rich lineage of sax giants that runs from Chris Potter to Michael Brecker back to one of their key role models, Joe Henderson, but also references the more serene ways of Jan Garbarek. While Neset’s improvising has lost none of its cascading verve his new compositions mark a considerable shift compared to previous material.

Pinball is arguably the strongest artistic statement Marius Neset has made to date insofar as it acts as a dual showcase for his gifts as an improviser and composer. It also unveils an international band where the whole is greater than the sum of the not inconsiderable parts. Norwegian drummer Anton Eger, who also co-produced the album, is a long-term associate of Neset’s, having worked with him on the acclaimed albums Golden Explosion and Birds. The two musicians previously lined up with the Swedish double bassist Petter Eldh in People Are Machines. Furthermore, Eger gigs regularly with pianist Ivo Neame in the highly successful trio Phronesis, so Neset’s core rhythm section hardly comprises strangers washing up on an unknown musical shore. As for vibraphonist Jim Hart he has been playing with Neame for many years. Living Being VINCENT PEIRANI “Vincent Peirani breaks new ground for his instrument” (The Observer). With his new album Living Being, the French accordionist is redefining his instrument for the 21st Century. Vincent Peirani is one of European Jazz’s rising stars: In 2014 he received the prestigious Victoires du Jazz award as “newcomer jazz artist of the year” in his home country and won the German ECHO Jazz award. Part of a growing generation of young jazz musicians who were educated in classical music but grew up listening to and playing everything from rock and pop to electronic music, Peirani has carved out a reputation as one of the most innovative and genre-defying composer/players working today. Unafraid to explore new cultures and ideas, Peirani has freed the accordion from the shackles of stereotype. In his hands the instrument is made to sound like a cornucopia of different instruments and sounds from across the musical spectrum.

Mein Beethoven DIETER ILG "Mein Beethoven" is the logical next step for Dieter Ilg. His last album "Parsifal" – a chamber-jazz interpretation of Richard Wagner's sacred festival work – closed with a whispered theme from Beethoven's Ninth ("Ode to Joy"), retitled "Sehnsucht" (Longing) by Ilg. Now he has satisfied that yearning and recorded an entire album, "Mein Beethoven", dedicated to this Olympian of German classical music, Ludwig van Beethoven. It is not only Ilg's singing, grooving bass, savouring every nuance, that makes his Beethoven arrangements such a joy to behold, it is also Reiner Böhm's sparkling touch, his pianistic greatness in respectfully playing around some of the most beautiful melodies in music history, and Patrice Héral's ability to always add orchestral splendour through his extraordinary drumming, with fitting fills and variations. Things of that Particular Nature DUANE EUBANKS QUINTET Things of that Particular Nature is Philadelphia trumpeter Duane Eubanks’s first new recording in nearly a decade. Having moved to New York in the late 1990s Eubanks released two albums on the TCB label, but from then the processes of establishing a new working group were slow to coalesce. For several years he collaborated on projects with many diverse and highly respected musicians, including his brothers, Robin and Kevin, Elvin Jones, Dave Holland and his mentor Mulgrew Miller. In time however Eubanks' new group took shape, and this new album, composed and produced by the trumpeter himself, is the result of their endeavours. Eubanks had known and collaborated with drummer, Eric McPherson, for a number of years. McPherson helped forge a relationship with saxophonist, Abraham Burton. It wasn’t until Burton invited Eubanks to sit in on a gig that featured bassist, Dezron Douglas and pianist, Marc Cary that the trumpeter truly felt at home with a group. Eubanks knew that he wanted to perform with these musicians, as their energy and love for each other was obvious, as McPherson, Burton, and Cary had been playing together for nearly 20 years, and this clearly came across in the studio.

The Now AARON GOLDBERG Hailed by Down Beat magazine for his “quick-witted harmonic reflexes, fluid command of line and cut-to-the-chase sense of narrative logic,” Aaron Goldberg has made his name as one of jazz’s most compelling pianists, both as a bandleader and frequent collaborator with Joshua Redman, Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Guillermo Klein and many more. On his new release The Now, Goldberg reunites with bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland, the virtuoso rhythm team going all the way back to his 1998 debut Turning Point. On their fifth outing together, the trio foregrounds a central truth about the art of playing jazz: that no two performances will be the same because the music is created, in Goldberg’s words, “in the dynamic plane of the present.” Goldberg intersperses his own compositions with several Brazilian tunes and one Haitian, plus one each from Charlie Parker and Warne Marsh. The album was recorded in New York in April 2014.

Rosewater - Original Soundtrack HOWARD SHORE The feature film ROSEWATER is based on The New York Times best-selling memoir "Then They Came for Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival", written by the BBC journalist Maziar Bahari. A true story, the film marks the screenwriting and directorial debut of “The Daily Show” host and executive producer Jon Stewart, and stars Gael García Bernal, leading an international cast. Rosewater follows the Tehran-born Bahari, a 42-year-old broadcast journalist with Canadian citizenship living in London. In June 2009, Bahari returned to Iran to interview Mir-Hossein Mousavi, who was the prime challenger to controversial incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. As Moussavi’s supporters rose up to protest Ahmadinejad’s victory declaration hours before the polls closed on election day, Bahari endured great personal risk by submitting camera footage of the unfolding street riots to the BBC. Bahari was soon arrested by Revolutionary Guard police, led by a man he nicknamed “Rosewater” for his fragrant cologne, who proceeded to interrogate, and torture, the journalist over the next 118 days.
