Kiriké KASSÉ MADY DIABATÉ For almost half a century Kassé Mady Diabaté has been recognised as one of West Africa’s finest singers. He is a descendant of the most distinguished griot family and his name, alongside other griot legends Toumani Diabaté and Bassékou Kouyaté, is equivalent to musical royalty in Mali. Over his fifty-year long career, he’s released numerous solo records and collaborated with Taj Mahal, Toumani Diabaté, Ketama, the Symmetric Orchestra, etc. On the record and on stage, Kassé Mady is joined by Malian kora maestro Ballaké Sissoko, iconoclastic French cellist Vincent Segal, balafon player Lansiné Kouyaté (from duo Kouyaté-Neerman) and ngoni player Makan Tounkara. Kiriké is the third album in a series born out of the friendship between Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Segal, long admirers of Kassé Mady. Already this friendship has resulted in two beautiful albums, Chamber Music (2009) and At Peace (2012), both released on the No Format! label.

Espiritu Del Sol AMPARO SANCHEZ Amparo, once of Amparanoia, continues on her solo career, once more in the company of Joey Burns and John Convertino of Calexico. Espíritu del Sol is a tour de force of broodingly magnificent Basque / Arizona songcraft. Two good fairies blessed this Spanish singer who seems to belong to a whole new movida. The first was the French nomad Manu Chao, who met her in the mid-nineties and gave her the run of his recording studio, helping her start out. Then came the American Joey Burns, who is the mainstay of the band Calexico and who has followed her solo career attentively, playing in her band and finalising the production of Espíritu del Sol at his studio in Arizona. This new album firmly establishes Amparo Sánchez as an iconic modern artist, whose joyful and positive approach is an act of resistance against the ambient gloom. At the head of a dynamic ensemble, she is a charismatic stage performer and an exuberant 'cantaora' who knows like no other how to mix hints of bolero, folk rock and rumba into her upbeat choruses. Massilia MASSILIA SOUND SYSTEM 2014 marks the 30th anniversary of Massilia Sound System, who sing of Marseilles, partying and love but also of anger and the fight for social rights. With vocals in both French and Occitan (Massilia is Occitan for Marseille) the Sound System is back to get the planet dancing! Massilia Sound System is a reggae band formed in Marseille, France in 1984. They developed a Provençal hybrid version of reggae and raggamuffin with lyrics in the French and Occitan languages, sometimes referred to as trobamuffin (from the Occitan word trobador and the musical style raggamuffin), though they have also performed in Portuguese and Italian. They incorporate many rhythms, beats and samples from the local tradition or other musical colleagues, and their lyrics indicate a profound parochialism for Marseille and the south of France in general.

Avaz KEYVAN CHEMIRANI Avaz is a project uniting the words of Persian mystical poets from the 12th & 13th centuries with traditional Breton gwerzioù (laments). The subject of love is developed by singers Annie Ebrel and Mayram Chemirani, between meditative laments and lyric inspirations, alternately in Persian and Breton. Then, in yet another language, created by the union of two voices. To accompany these songs, the musicians mine the history and culture of the Iranian and Breton traditions and furthermore develop their own narrative form. Acclaimed Iranian percussionist Keyvan Chemirani, Hamid Khabbazi (târ), and Sylvain Barou (flutes) lead the dance on crossed rhythms. They form a subtle setting to mix and emphasise the unique characters of the two repertoires, playing traditional pieces and original compositions.

Weltentraum Live MICHAEL WOLLNY TRIO For Michael Wollny, his trio album "Weltentraum" and it’s tour have been the highlights of his unparalleled career to date. Circuit Rider RON MILES / BILL FRISELL / BRIAN BLADE Ron Miles collaborates for the second time with the heavyweight team of guitarist Bill Frisell and drummer Brian Blade. His longstanding relationship with Bill Frisell began almost two decades ago and has resulted in countless collaborations, including the previous trio album Quiver (2012, Enja Records) and their duo recording Heaven. Ron has appeared on many of Frisell's recordings and has toured with him extensively. Ron is a music professor at the Denver Metropolitan State College. Ron Miles is one of the finest improvisers and composers of his generation. In addition to leading his own bands, he has performed in the ensembles of Mercer Ellington, Don Byron, Myra Melford, Joe Henry, Madeleine Peyroux, Jason Moran, Matt Wilson, the Bad Plus, Harriet Tubman and Ginger Baker. “Ron Miles is one of the finest trumpeters in jazz today. Still Out to Lunch! RUSS JOHNSON Eric Dolphy's recording Out To Lunch is a masterpiece. Late 20th Century jazz every listener serious about music - or just after a mind-opening experience - should hear. Johnson, alto saxophonist Roy Nathanson, pianist Myra Melford, bassist Brad Jones and drummer George Schuller here approach a 50-year-old classic with reverence but also with regard for an imperative Dolphy would have undoubtedly endorsed - that if they choose to play his music they should be themselves. The players here are not Dolphy, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis and Tony Williams, nor should they be. We have Eric Dolphy to thank for creating this work and his troupe of 1964 for realizing it brilliantly. Now we thank Russ Johnson and band for reminding us that really magical mysteries remain potent forever and that new visionaries can always refresh the once and future avant-garde. The music they've made is sometimes weird, wholly unpredictable, familiar but different. It's Still Out To Lunch.

Beholden MIKE WALKER & STUART McCALLUM Manchester guitarists Mike Walker and Stuart McCallum are both well known nationally and internationally – Walker for his work with The Impossible Gentlemen and McCallum with The Cinematic Orchestra. Beholden, the duo’s debut album, the first for new label Shell-Like Records, is a new and exciting chapter in the guitarists’ careers. Walker and McCallum are both best known for their work on electric guitar. However, for this new duo they use four different acoustic guitars to re-imagine and re-sculpt their own original compositions and some well-known jazz standards into fresh shapes. Oliv & Familie SPONTANEOUS MUSIC ENSEMBLE A long overdue reappearance of the third Spontaneous Music Ensemble LP. One version of OLIV features Kenny Wheeler and Derek Bailey soloing over a four-person voice and saxophone drone which is eventually joined by a piano/bass/drums rhythm section. The second version is an improvisation by the quartet of John Stevens, Maggie Nicols, Trevor Watts and Johnny Dyani – one of the great early examples of the free improvisation era, and the recording debut of Nicols. Also included are one and a half takes of FAMILIE by an eleven piece group, the earliest recorded example of a large group SME performance. Strongly influenced by Gagaku (Japanese court music), this ensemble comprises two voices, three winds, three strings, piano, guitar, and percussion. 67 minutes - reissue of Marmalade LP 608008 (2384009) plus 31 minutes previously unissued.

PAUL RUTHERFORD TRIO A short-lived improvising trio, featuring the trombonist with PAUL ROGERS (double bass) and NIGEL MORRIS (drums), that the leader put together to explore more free jazz-like areas than usual. Rutherford and Rogers play to their expected very high standards (even though it was one of the bassist's earliest recordings), while Morris shows why he is missed so much since he quit this music. The whole of their Bracknell Jazz Festival set is included along with some studio recordings. 77 minutes - reissue of Emanem 4107 (which was a reissue of Ogun cassette OGC531 with extra material).

Cycles STEVE LACY Solo saxophone performances of three of Lacy's rarest cycles. The eight-part SHOTS comes mostly from a 1977 Roman concert, with a couple of missing pieces taken from other contemporaneous performances. The only other complete (duo) release of this material was on a long deleted (Musica) LP. The rest of this 2-CD set comes from a 1980 solo recording session and concert in the lively acoustics of an old church in Porrentruy in Switzerland. Four individual pieces, two of which have not appeared anywhere else, were given excellent readings. The then newly written SANDS trilogy was given a definitive performance some 18 years before the hitherto lone issued version. Finally the rare HEDGES sequence was performed with a dancer. Of the 148 minutes on these two CDs, only the 37 minute HEDGES has appeared before (on a long out-of-print hat ART LP 1982).

School Days STEVE LACY A 1963 gig by the quartet of STEVE LACY, ROSWELL RUDD, DENNIS CHARLES and, on most of this session, HENRY GRIMES playing their original piano-less interpretations of the music of Thelonious Monk. The 1975 release of this material on Emanem 3316 (subsequently reissued on QED, hatART and hatOLOGY) was the first appearance of this important band on record, thanks to the foresight of Vashkar Nandy and Paul Haines who recorded them excellently. This CD presents the music in the order of performance for the first time. Also included are the two extant examples of Lacy with the THELONIOUS MONK QUINTET (with CHARLIE ROUSE, JOHN ORE & ROY HAYNES) made at a 1960 festival in Philadelphia. (The recording of a third piece was truncated before Lacy's solo, so it has been omitted). These were recently issued on RLR with significantly inferior sound, quite a bit of skipping, and the wrong date - all of which have been corrected here. 69 minutes.

The Melody Lingers On HOUSTON PERSON Mix hydrogen and oxygen and you have the recipe for water. Mix flour and water and you have a recipe for biscuits. Mix tenor man Houston Person and vibist Steve Nelson and you have a recipe for one great jazz CD. The Guardian has called Houston Person, “an eloquent messenger from a jazz era rooted in traditional blues, black church music, Broadway love songs and the impersonation, by sax, of a singer's tone palette,” while Nate Chinen in the New York Times has singled out Nelson's “harmonic sumptuousness, jangly clusters,” and “effervescent artistry.” Together they explore the nooks and crannies of ten standards, some familiar, some obscure, with the Rudy Van Gelder sonics yielding up every nuance and inflection of the players. Cerca PARAGON The Anglo-German collaboration Paragon have developed keen ears for each other over their 10 years together. On this their third album - their first with Jellymould - the conversation and melody is carried from one to another. Time keeping is shared and their consummate ease rewards our keen ears with elegant detail and a momentum carried over the 10 tracks. Cerca is a polished take on a range of influences, which brings all the members’ playing history together, from Brooklyn ballads to Venezuelan merengue to Bollywood bhangra. It’s the sound of a journey taking place. Visions KAVITA SHAH A vivid self-portrait in mosaic form, Kavita Shah's Visions heralds the arrival of a strikingly original, globally minded new voice. The gifted vocalist/composer brings together a rich variety of musical, cultural, and personal influences into a formidable debut album that combines a jazz quintet with Indian tablas and the West African kora. The Turn JEROME SABBAGH “The Turn” is the third album of the Jerome Sabbagh Quartet. Starting on piano aged four, A Bu's talents rapidly became obvious. At only nine years old he was accepted into the Conservatory of Music in China’s capital. At the same time the young boy decided, on his own, to dabble in jazz, begging his parents to let him take jazz and latin piano lessons alongside his classical education. Through self-study, A Bu then learnt how to use the music software Logic, and also picked up guitar and electric bass. In November 2011 A Bu started to get up on stage regularly in jam sessions at the CD-Blues Café in Beijing, which led to the formation of the A Bu jazz trio, together with Shao Haha on drums and Ma Kai on bass. In early 2013 the Grammy award-winning producer and recording engineer Jakob Händel was invited to China, to work with A Bu’s trio on recording their first CD, in Beijing’s China Central Film studios. Now A Bu graces the stages of some of China's major festivals and concert halls - a very special moment occurred during the Chick Corea solo piano concert in Shanghai, when the star invited his gifted young fan to perform a four hand piano with him on stage.

My Chet My Song RICCARDO DEL FRA Already a well-established name on the European jazz scene, at the end of 1979 came the decisive meeting in Rome with the trumpet player Chet Baker. Riccardo Del Fra played alongside Chet for about nine years both in Europe and Japan on tours, for the radio and for the television; a collaboration which led to the recording of twelve albums, videos (Live in London at the Ronnie Scott) and the movie Chet’s Romance directed by Bertrand Fèvre. Chet's death in 1988 curtailed their partnership, but 25 years later the Marciac festival commissioned Del Fra to lead an ambitious project uniting a jazz quintet with a classical orchestra to play tunes associated with the doomed trumpeter. The project was not only performed live at the Festival but also broadcast on French radio and television. This album release allows us all to share in the glorious results.

By the mid 50s Charles Mingus had formed his own publishing and recording companies to protect and document his growing repertoire of original music. He also founded the “Jazz Workshop,” a group which enabled young composers to have their new works performed in concert and on recordings. He once declared to Nat Hentoff: “I am trying to play the truth of what I am. The reason it’s difficult is because I’m / changing all the time.” The Clown marked his second consecutive masterpiece after Pithecanthropus Erectus. On The Clown, instead of just writing heads that provide launch points for solos, Mingus tries to evoke something specific with every tune, and even his most impressionistic forays have a strong storytelling quality. The title selection makes that explicit with a story verbally improvised by Jean Shepherd from a predetermined narrative. The Clown introduced two of Mingus’ finest compositions: “Haitian Fight Song” and “Reincarnation of a Lovebird”, a tribute to Charlie Parker. Mingus would play both tunes many times throughout his career. In addition to his role as composer and arranger, Mingus is heard on this second album as a marvelous soloist, taking longer solos than on previous recordings (he plays unaccompanied on “Haitian Fight Song”).
