Rhapsody in Blue URI CAINE ENSEMBLE The artistic dialogue of Uri Caine with the oeuvre of George Gershwin is overdue. Caine and Gershwin are not only connected by the Jewish East European origin of their families, but also through New York City, the centre of their creative output. Both compose, direct from the piano, ground-breaking projects; and both range between classical music and jazz. Caine chooses Gershwin’s outstanding masterpiece "Rhapsody in Blue" as the core piece of his new interpretations and fills this amazing opus with a new spirit of jazz, infused with the klezmer melodies played more than hundred years ago in the homeland of their fathers. Barbara Walker and Theo Bleckmann sing "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" in a touching duet. Uri Caine’s ensemble for this album also includes Joyce Hammann on violin, Jim Black on drums and Mark Helias on bass; fantastic musicians long part of Caine’s close circle. The final track "How Long Has This Been Going On" is presented by Uri Caine as an homage to Gershwin as a piano solo piece.

Special Requests (And Other Favorites) KENNY BURRELL Kenny Burrell has appeared on so many essential jazz recordings that jazz history and his biography seem irretrievably intertwined. Billie Holiday's valedictory rumination Lady Sings the Blues, Jimmy Smith's epochal funk throwdown Back at the Chicken Shack, Tony Bennett's Carnegie Hall debut -- Kenny Burrell played guitar for them all. Even Jimi Hendrix once remarked, "Kenny Burrell - that's the sound I'm looking for." Here is Burrell captured live at the West-Coast jazz Mecca, Catalina's, in an easy-going program of some of his most-requested tunes along with a few of his personal favorites thrown in. Jazz tunes by Benny Golson, Freddie Hubbard, the Duke and others, standards and even Kenny's classic original “Chitlins Con Carne” are here, all given the ever-tasteful Burrell treatment. Costumes Are Mandatory Ethan IVERSON / Lee KONITZ / Larry GRENADIER / Jorge ROSSY Lee Konitz, now 85 years young, began his career in the wake of Charlie Parker but after mentoring by Lennie Tristano and recording with Warne Marsh, he became arguably the only saxophonist to offer an alternative to Bird's overwhelming influence at the time. The 1949 recording, Intuition, under Tristano's leadership, found the three men defining “free jazz” a full decade before the term was coined. It is not surprising then that free-thinking and improvising Konitz would gravitate to the post-modern sensibilities of Ethan Iverson, best known as the pianist in The Bad Plus and a composer of extremely wide range and versatility. Together with Larry Grenadier and Jorge Rossy they offer a wildly creative set list where past and present combine to teeter on the edge of the future, where new compositions traverse unexplored soundscapes and standards are deconstructed only to be reassembled in a way which challenges preconceived notions of how a tune “should go.”

Brooklyn Babylon DARCY JAMES ARGUE'S SECRET SOCIETY Brooklyn-based composer-bandleader Darcy James Argue is credited with “making the big band cool again” (Time Out New York) and “reinventing the jazz big band for the 21st century” (The Guardian). Argue and his innovative 18-piece big band Secret Society, one of the most admired ensembles in contemporary jazz, now release their highly anticipated second album, Brooklyn Babylon. Brooklyn Babylon tells the story of a future Brooklyn in which plans are afoot to construct an immense tower — the tallest in the world — right in the heart of the city. Lev, a master carpenter, finds himself torn between ambition and and devotion to the neighborhood he loves when he is commissioned to build the carousel that will crown the Tower of Brooklyn.

Weaving together progressive jazz, early-American popular styles, Balkan folk musics, and the sounds of Brooklyn’s diverse contemporary music scene — from the dance-punk of LCD Soundsystem and experimental indie rock of Dirty Projectors to Missy Mazzoli’s blend of post-rock and quirky minimalism — Argue creates a vividly evocative musical narrative that is at once timeless and unlike anything heard before. - "Darcy James Argue’s latest album is a rich, multilayered masterpiece of large-forces composition." John L Walters, LONDONJAZZNEWS - "On Brooklyn Babylon, Argue refuses to be easily boxed and defined, except by one word: amazing." Qualia HENRIK JENSEN'S FOLLOWED BY THIRTEEN Qualia is the beautiful debut album from London-based Danish bass player/composer Henrik Jensen and his group Followed By Thirteen. Jensen has spent the last five years recording and touring the world with the vocal trio The Puppini Sisters but he has also been laying the bass lines down with artists including, Pete Wareham, Elizabeth Shepherd, Martin Speake , Peter Ehwald, Billy Jenkins, Arthur Lea and Will Butterworth. However, it is this group where Henrik’s musical focus really lies. American trumpeter Andre Canniere is a rising star on the European jazz scene. As well as playing with such luminaries as Maria Schneider, Bjorkestra, Ted Poor and Darcy James Argue Canniere’s debut album from 2012 was hailed as “beautifully balanced” and “exhilarating” in its five star review by The Guardian. Danish pianist Esben Tjalve’s delicate playing compliments Jensen’s compositions with such taste, and underpinning the whole band with his sensitive, unobtrusive dexterity is British drummer Peter Ibbetson who is becoming a favourite amongst leaders on the healthy London scene.

The solo gig she shared with Oregon at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in the London Jazz Festival was described as ‘one of the most inspired pairings of the festival’ and received a 5 star Evening Standard review and was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. This music on her new live solo CD explores her German-Jewish identity - a theme that has become a prominent part of her artistic work since her move from London to Berlin. Wave Forms and Sea Changes JIM BLOMFIELD TRIO Leader and composer Jim Blomfield confirms himself as a major force on the UK jazz scene with the long-awaited debut release from this remarkable trio. Over the last two years the trio have been developing their own sound through the rehearsing and gigging of Blomfield’s varied and often intricate compositions, the result being an attention to detail, musical dynamics and an organic level of trio interplay. It is these qualities that have come to fruition on this recording as well as having been so appealing to audiences during the trio’s live performances. Like many of the newer generation of jazz players today, the album reflects the engagement with jazz synthesized through the sounds and influences of the time – eclectic colours of Rock, Drum and Bass, Latin jazz and Blomfield’s training in classical piano blend with the more traditional flavours of contemporary jazz. Overall, ‘Wave Forms and Sea Changes’ will engage the listener in a fascinating musical journey with it’s lyrical and evocative melodies, driving rhythms, rich harmonies, adventurous solo and group improvisations and tight, complex ensemble writing.

Wind IBRAHIM MAALOUF DOUBLE VINYL VERSION OF THE LATEST ALBUM BY THE NEW TRUMPET STAR Asked by the French national film library to choose and then write the music for a film from among the silent movies in the Albatros catalogue, Ibrahim Maalouf chose, from the selection proposed, RenĂŠ Clair's film " The Prey of the Wind". The project allowed Maalouf to fulfil two wishes - first to compose for a film, and second to compose a piece that could be very much inspired by Miles Davis' music in Louis Malle's "Lift to the Scaffold" but with the quarter-tone trumpet.
Label: Mi'ster Productions File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: IBM6 Barcode: 3149028039528 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 2 LP Ibrahim Maalouf, trumpet Larry Grenadier, bass Clarence Penn, drums Mark Turner, sax Frank Woeste, piano
"Paris-based Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf learned a Middle Eastern quarter-tone technique from his brass-playing father, started out winning classical competitions, and then taught himself jazz. This New York quintet session, including US star sidemen Mark Turner (sax) and Clarence Penn (drums), seems certain to broaden his audience. Maalouf has dedicated this album to Miles Davis, and it often uncannily echoes Sketches of Spain, but transformed in pitch by an Arabic influence. It's a session of poise, variety and sublime skill, moving from folk themes with Celtic lilts to hook-based funky pieces and evocative ballads. Some passages build like Brad Mehldau pieces, hinting at melodies and grooves. Sensuality has a stealthily playful theme and a steady Cuban dance pulse, but keeps throwing stylistic surprises. A startling new voice in contemporary jazz has arrived." **** GUARDIAN Side A 1 Doubts 3'31 2 Suspicions 7'10 3 Waiting 4'51 Side B 4 Questions & answers 4'38 5 Waiting 2 0'55 6 Excitement 6'45 Side C 7 Certainty 6'09 8 Sensuality 7'42 9 Issues 6'03 Side D 10 Surprises 6'28 11 Doubts 2 4'55 12 Mystery 3'25

The chemistry Brotzmann, Parker and Drake have as a trio is significantly altered when they are joined by Toshinori Kondo to form Die Like a Dog Quartet. Kondo's electronically altered trumpet adds a surreal iridescence to the molten energy the trio achieves on its own. On Aoyama Crows, recorded at the 1999 Total Music Meeting in Berlin, Kondo occasionally lends the proceedings a gritty '70s-vintage Milesian flavor; but far more often than not, Kondo's ricocheting smears and blasts have no jazz antecedent whatsoever. Conversely, Kondo's presence tends to prod Brotzmann toward mournful chant and work-song-related thematic fragments that countervail the infinite skittering of Kondo's digitally delayed textures, which is the case deep in this gripping set. Formed in 1998 by Schuman, who writes and sings nearly all of the band’s material and forges their creative direction, Hazmat Modine seamlessly integrates primal, guttural blues, funky, unadulterated old school R&B and myriad sounds from other cultures, absorbed during their constant touring in more than 20 different countries across the world. Schuman says: “Hazmat Modine tries to get to the core of what makes American music work, and American music is informed by the immigrant experience. There’s an organic evolution that takes place. American music is world music in essence since it is a product of the all diasporas that have come here.”

Qawwali - Flamenco FAIZ ALI FAIZ / DUQUENDE / MIGUEL POVEDA / CHICUELO In June 2005, the Faiz Ali Faiz ensemble were joined by Spanish flamenco artists Miguel Poveda, Duquende and Chicuelo for a groundbreaking collaboration at the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music. Their performance underlined the common roots of both musical forms, the vibrant, raw force of flamenco goes back to basics and merges with Indo-Pakistani qawwali trance. The show was brought to the UK the following year as part of the Barbican's Ramadan Nights series. Building on that earlier success, Faiz Ali Faiz returns to the stage this year, teaming up again with the rhythms and inimitable chords of flamenco guitarist Chicuelo. The two artists continue the adventure with a special guest, the renowned 'Cantaora' Carmen Linares, and a group of musicians gathered specially for the occasion. They return to the Barbican on October 6.
