Akö BLICK BASSY Blick Bassy’s stunning and original debut for pioneering French label Nø Førmat! Composed and performed by Blick Bassy, accompanied by a unique ensemble of guitar, banjo, cello and trombone, Akö’s eleven sparklingly original tracks are a musical revelation. Remarkable then, to consider that these are recordings that were never intended for release. Bassy’s original idea was to get together with the cellist Clément Petit and trombonist Fidel Fourneyron to record a few songs in homage to his longtime hero Skip James. By chance, the studio they hired was directly below the offices of Nø Førmat!, the innovative French label run by Laurent Bizot, who happened to hear the results of this unlikely yet inspired musical alchemy and promptly signed them up.

Sung in Bassa, a language and tradition that he has long championed, Bassy sings of the village he grew up in rural Cameroon - drawing connections between the itinerant musicians of his childhood with journeyman blues legend Skip James. While the influence of the Malian folk of Ali Farka Toure can be detected on Tell Me and Mama, and the complex melodic patterns betray his Cameroonian roots throughout, this is an album that makes subtle references to a musical palette that ranges from the Gypsy Swing flavours of Wap Do Wap to the sparse and haunting singer songwriter classic in the making Ndjèl. * 'KIKI' CHOSEN BY APPLE FOR WORLDWIDE TV / WEB ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN FOR iPHONE 6 Click here and check the cricket film... http://www.apple.com/iphone/world-gallery/films/ * airplay on 6 Music (Gideon Coe, Lauren Laverne), World on 3, Late Junction * confirmed reviews in Mojo, Uncut, Songlines, with further print and online coverage tbc * UK gigs are in the pipeline for autumn 2015 "It's just stunning. so many great songs on the album" Lauren Laverne, BBC Radio 6 Music "Beautifully quirky." Rebirth EP LES AMBASSADEURS Some bands score a few hits, some change the face of music and some end up defining a whole era. Les Ambassadeurs did all three. During their decade and half of existence, from 1970 to 1985, this West African supergroup wrote and rewrote the rule book for the Manding pop that was to achieve global success during the ‘world music’ boom of the 1980s and 1990s. They forged a new sound out of the dreams and tensions of post-Independence West Africa: socialism, pan-Africanism, black pride, authenticité, salsa, jazz, soul, rock’n’roll and the ancient art of the griots. They gave the Malian everyman and everywomen a chance to reconcile their instinctive pride in West Africa’s illustrious past with their equally instinctive desire to be fully engaged in the modern world. “Above all”, says Salif Keita, Les Ambassadeurs’ most famous ‘son’, “they taught Malians to love their own music.”

The reunion of Les Ambassadeurs in 2014 was a banner headline long dreamt of by Malians, West Africans and lovers of African music the world over. Les Ambassadeurs deliver proof that Malian musicians, given the right conditions and support, can create truly revolutionary music. That’s exactly what happened back in those salad days in the 1970s when Les Ambassadeurs were the pride of Mali and West Africa, and that’s what will happen again if the country can face its demons, heal its fractured soul and get back to the business of creating conditions in which music and culture can flourish. (Notes by Andy Morgan) - A truly legendary band, featuring original members Salif Keita, Cheik Tidiane Seck, Idrissa Soumaoro - The band toured Europe last summer, including UK appearances as WOMAD headliners and at the Barbican - These new studio recordings, new versions of classic hits, were made in Paris during the tour - Produced by Nick Gold and Leon Brichard - Sleeve notes by author and Mali specialist Andy Morgan - The band's 2014 release on Sterns was voted "Compilation/Reissue of the Year" in the Froots poll Track listing: 1.Mali Denou (Salif Keita)4:40 2.Tiecolomba Hé(Idrissa Soumaoro)5:01 3.Seydou (Salif Keita)5:20 4.4V (Manfila Kanté)5:15

Live in Marciac - August 5th 2014 AHMAD JAMAL Picture Marciac, during a sultry evening in early August, 2014. Like every year, this little town in the Gers region has been turned into the worldwide capital of jazz for a month and under the marquee Ahmad Jamal is stepping out onto the stage with his three fellow musicians. This time, it’s the double bass player Reginald Veal’s turn to set the tempo with a marvellous new track, Sunday Afternoon, which prolongs the magic of the albums Blue Moon and Saturday Morning. The band is in great shape and seems more than ever to function by telepathy. Majestically, Ahmad Jamal bestows upon us a wonderful, intense shot of groove; aside his own compositions, which fill the playlist for most of his set, he gives a nod to Cole Porter and Horace Silver, who has just died and to whom he makes a double tribute, both playing his famous track Strollin' and dedicating a new piece, Silver, to him. The group sounds better than ever, and their pianist has reached the highest echelons of genius. The audience drinks it all in, as we all can today, thanks to this unmissable double album which is a feast both for our ears and our eyes.

Tricko KIT DOWNES Diving into the space between the organised and the disorganised, Mercury Music Prize nominated composer and pianist, Kit Downes, pulls together the lyricism and big-beat of his favourite minimalists, the imagination and intensity of his favourite modern jazz composers, ballads from nearby circling ice-cream vans and his own light-footed approach to improvisation in this – his new ensemble, Tricko. Downes (piano and composition) is joined by Lucy Railton (cello - curator and creator of London Contemporary Music Festival and Klammer Klang) forming a pairing that is at once both dark and detailed, colourful and contemplative. There is nonetheless a quiet power to Downes new ensemble and something truly magical as they conjure a rich, deceptively simple, but deeply complex and always lyrical musical world uniquely their own.

Spleen SMADJ Smadj, the shaman of oud, uses acoustics and technology to shape a superb musical jigsaw whose charm arises from an affectionate marriage between tradition(s) and modernity. Reflections of the blues, fado, tango, flamenco and Arabic classical music all weave through the music. Jean-Pierre Smadja, aka Smadj, was raised by Tunisian parents in the suburbs of Paris. Smadj developed an early obsession with combining jazz and Arabic music together. His fusion of global influences and Parisian jazz funk expresses an extraordinary breadth of influences, from oriental to Brazilian music, to jazz, funk and soul. He makes his Jazz Village debut his latest album, Spleen, recorded over a period of five years 2010-15. Smadj utiltises acoustic oud, electric oud and electronics on the album, which also features guest appearances by BallakĂŠ Sissoko, Ibrahim Maalouf and Bojan Z among others.

Juneteenth STANLEY COWELL Juneteenth is a traditional festival of freedom for African Americans. The name comes from a date, June 19, 1865, the day blacks in Texas learned that slavery was abolished. Inspired by the upcoming 150th anniversary of the festival, American jazz pianist Stanley Cowell first created the suite for piano recorded here, and then went on to create a work on the same theme for orchestra, choir and electronics. Cowell, currently a professor at Rutgers, has worked with many jazz greats including Max Roach, Bobby Hutcherson, Clifford Jordan, Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz.

Mingus Sings KU-UMBA FRANK LACY & MINGUS BIG BAND MINGUS TUNES - INCLUDING TWO NEVER BEFORE RECORDED - WITH LYRICS BY MINGUS HIMSELF, AND BY JONI MITCHELL, ELVIS COSTELLO, SUE MINGUS AND MORE Charles Mingus was a composer whose music spoke volumes without words. It was a rare thing to hear lyrics along with his highly wrought and incredibly emotive compositions, though Mingus had the heart of a poet, as can be seen in his song titles alone. However, there were projects where Mingus added lyrics to his compositional voice, using either his poetry or that of others. On Ku-umba Frank Lacy and Mingus Big Band’s Mingus Sings, the tremendous repertory ensemble directed by Mingus’s widow, Sue Mingus, has recorded an album of pieces that put vocals front and center, led in part by the triumphant voice of Ku-umba Frank Lacy.

Label: Sunnyside Records File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: SSC1407 Barcode: 016728140720 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Frank Lacy - vocals Jack Walrath, Alex Norris, Lew Soloff - trumpet Craig Handy, Wayne Escoffery, Ronnie Cuber, Alex Foster, Abraham Burton, Brandon Wright saxophones Conrad Herwig, Coleman Hughes, Earl McIntyre - trombone Helen Sung, David Kikoski - piano Mike Richmond, Boris Kozlov - bass Donald Edwards - drums

Of course, Mingus was best known as a composer, not a lyricist. He did write a number of pieces utilizing his own fine lyrics; four of them are presented here: “Weird Nightmare,” “Eclipse,” “Duke Ellington’s Sound of Love,” and “Portrait.” The lyrics to the remainder of his pieces come from a handful of extraordinary talents. Four pieces come from Mingus’s collaboration with the great singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell, while two have lyrics written by rock and roll legend Elvis Costello. The poetry of Langston Hughes accompanies “Consider Me” from the 1958 recording, The Weary Blues , that Hughes made with Mingus. Two Mingus compositions are recorded here for the first time - “Dizzy Profile” and "Noonlight". Track listing: 1. Consider Me 4:24 2. Dizzy Profile 4:39 3. Weird Nightmare 5:09 4. Portrait 7:21 5. Oh Yeah Ho PAPANOSH The timeless spirit of Charles Mingus looms large in the music of Papanosh, who bring saxophonist Roy Nathanson into their intoxicating collision of headlong rhythms and surprising melody — all the way from south west France by way of downtown New York. (London Jazz Festival) With significant space devoted to groove, to pulsation, to dance, to jazz, the Papanosh musicians bring a breath of freshness to the notion of Imaginary Folklore, yet keeping in mind the de-compartmentalized art of an Art Ensemble of Chicago. This band offers a music that is as explosive in its result as it is coherent in its conception: a music full of imagination, of joyful and improvised risk takings, of tender or merry smiles, of climate ruptures, all for a kaleidoscope of unique sensations and feelings. Standards Plus One PAUL MOTIAN This is the third release in the Winter & Winter Jubilee Edition, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the eclectic German label. In the '80s Paul Motian asked Stefan Winter and Hiroshi Itsuno (from Polydor K.K.), whether they would be interested in producing with him new interpretations of well-known and less known pieces from musicals. This was the beginning of the 'Paul Motian On Broadway' recordings, a series of albums which is considered an important milestone of unique interpretations of famous jazz standards. Stefan Winter, who ultimately recorded over 25 albums with Motian, selected seven standards and one original composition for the compilation Standards plus One, works which have been of special significance for Motian in his life.

Time Out magazine (USA) chose Paul Motian as The Essential New York Jazz Icon: "If you were surveying the NYC jazz scene in the late '50s, you might have pegged Paul Motian merely as a masterful accompanist, citing his role in pianist Bill Evans's celebrated trio. Five decades on, though, the drummer seems more rightly classified as a shaman. The bands he leads brush up against familiar jazz stylings, but always radiate a palpable sense of mystery and creeping abstraction. (He loves bringing along virtuoso sidemen, young and old, to revel in the weirdness.)." Track listing: 1. They Didn't Believe Me [Jerome Kern] 4:18 2. How Deep Is The Ocean [Irving Berlin] 6:49 3. In Good Company GEORGE CABLES When the classical composer Paul Dukas wrote, “In every beautiful work, it is the man the work expresses that counts first and foremost,” he could not have known he was describing the art of George Cables. One of the world’s greatest jazz pianists - one who helped define the sound of the instrument as we know it today – Cables has been making unostentatious music at the keyboard for decades. In Good Company, though focusing on people Cables knew in the past is not a tribute album, but rather a series of personal reminiscences from the keyboard. It looks back in time for its inspiration, but not in its musical vocabulary for George Cables’ playing remains as fresh and as surprising as the front page of tomorrow’s newspaper. On display in every track are those wonderful turns of phrases, interesting voicings and that gorgeous tone which characterizes Cables’ playing. With musical compadres Essiet Essiet and Victor Lewis, Cables explores the music of Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, John Hicks and offers a couple of his own intensely interesting compositions.

Squaring the Circle CLAUDIO FILIPPINI TRIO Claudio Filippini is back with his latest studio-recorded album, as a celebration of the 10-year artistic partnership with his trio including Luca Bulgarelli on double bass and Marcello Di Leonardo on drums. “Squaring The Circle” unfolds out of a revisitation of a number of standards that were chosen and performed from a different point of view. After just a three-day recording session of 50 tunes picked at random out of that huge treasure chest of the US jazz repertory, Filippini’s trio decided to make an album out of those tracks that could serve as fertile ground for plotting each trio member’s improvisations and, above all, reveal the trio’s way of playing with notes. This resulted in an album rich in nuances and charm, revealing a powerful empathy among the trio-mates, who show an undisputable command of their own instruments as well as that playful, easy mood rather uncommon in recordings of this kind.

Label: CAM Jazz File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: CAMJ7888-2 Barcode: 8052405141613 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: cristal Claudio Filippini - piano, keyboards Luca Bulgarelli - bass Marcello Di Leonardo - drums

If at times Filippini delights in upsetting harmony and altering pieces radically (as is the case with Impressions), at other times compositions remain unchanged, though striking in the impulsive urgency of their performance (Autumn Leaves, Jitterbug Waltz). There are tracks with a more classical flavour here (I Didn’t Know What Time It Was) alternating with those enhanced through a skilful, moderate use of electronics (‘Round Midnight, Stolen Moments). Filippini’s fine arrangements and unique touch in refined piano-playing make this all-standards album a timeless, ever-elegant nugget. He carries out a two-fold job, straddling tradition and innovation: on the one hand he draws on standards, on the other hand he includes hints at electronic and psychedelic music. An exquisite work, meticulously thought out, though with a directness and freshness that are fully conveyed by the excellent interplay of the three musicians. Track listing: 1. Impressions (J. Coltrane) 5:53 2. Autumn Leaves (F. Prévert - J. Kosma) 4 :55 3. ‘Round Midnight (B. Hanighen - T. Monk - C. Williams) 7:59 4. I Didn’t Know What Time It Was (L. Hart - R. Rodgers) 4:32 5. The multiple studio recording sessions Clifford Brown made during his brief career show both his prolific capacity and the high respect his fellow musicians and the recording industry had for his talents and reliability. Even Charlie Parker expressed his enthusiasm to Brownie after hearing him play. “To me, the name of Clifford Brown will always remain synonymous with the very essence of musical and moral maturity”, wrote Quincy Jones in Down Beat magazine in 1956, the week after Brown died in a car accident at the age of twenty-five. “This name”, continued Jones, “will stand as a symbol of the ideals every young jazz musician should strive to attain. This name also represents a musician who had intelligent understanding and awareness of social, moral, and economic problems which constantly confuse the jazz musician, sometimes to the point of hopeless rebellion.” Track listing: SIDE A: 1 JOY SPRING (Clifford Brown) 3:16 2 FINDERS KEEPERS (Jack Montrose) 3:52 3 GONE WITH THE WIND (Herbert Magidson-Allie Wrubel) 3:40 4 BLUEBERRY HILL (Al Lewis-Vincent Rose-Larry Stock) 3:16 5 GONE WITH THE WIND (Herbert Magidson-Allie Wrubel) [alternate take] 2:58* SIDE B: 1 DAHOUD (Clifford Brown) 4:13 2 TINY CAPERS (Clifford Brown) 4:16 3 BONES FOR JONES (Clifford Brown) 4:15 4 BONES FOR ZOOT (Russ Freeman) 4:21 5 TINY CAPERS (Clifford Brown) [alternate take] 2:59 * *BONUS TRACKS: From the same sessions, but not included on the original LP.

North India PANDIT BALARAM PATHAK Pandit Balaram Pathak is acknowledged as one of the very greatest artists in North Indian music. Pathak (1923-1991) was the creator of a unique style of sitar playing - one of particular melodic refinement, sweetness of tone and use of harmonics - and has been cited as an influence by successive generations of sitar players. Not as well known outside India as Ravi Shankar or Vilyat Khan, this is largely due to Pathak having only made two LPs, both long deleted. This 1986 Radio France recording (originally released by Ocora in 1987) thus fills a glaring void in the history of recorded sitar music. The album features three ragas, with tabla and tanpura accompaniment.
