Live in Concert MANU KATCHÉ After a four album stint with ECM, French/Ivorian percussionist Manu Katché releases his ACT debut, recorded on an electrifying evening (in June 2014) in the famed Parisian club New Morning. Katché and his quartet played some 130 concerts last year, which gives them impressive cohesion; the sound is superbly solid, sweeping all before it. Braced by layers of Hammond organ from the subtle Jim Watson, trumpeter Luca Aquino — now standing in for the excellent Nils Petter Molvaer — takes flight. Inside his percussive tone threads the same, velvet lyricism dispensed by Paolo Fresu, one of his former teachers. The twin voices of Tore Brunborg, tenor and soprano saxophones close to Jan Garbarek, conduct a perfect dialogue with the elegant arabesques from the trumpet. Jim Watson, whose heavy responsibility is to provide all the bass parts with his Hammond B3, shows himself to be just as inspired as when behind a grand piano. His rare solos are compact, stripped to the essentials, and far from any hollow virtuosity: they bring welcome breathing-space.

The skilled mix of discreet, electronic contributions with a dominant, acoustic sound constitutes one of this group's major strengths. Listening carefully, you notice that these musicians cleverly mix an extreme rigour into their creative liberties in order that everything will remain possible. It's obvious that they listen to each other attentively: they show respect for each other, never seeking to assert themselves, even less gain the upper hand. With the concert over, in the midst of the crowd on their (regretful) way out of the New Morning, one can feel that the magic of this genuinely special night will take a long time to evaporate.

Lost Memory Theatre - act 2 JUN MIYAKE Discovered by the Japanese legend Terumasa Hino, Jun Miyake started his career as a Jazz trumpeter, graduating Berklee College of Music. As he came back to Tokyo, he became an influential artist, as well as a successful composer. Miyake has closely worked with Pina Bausch, Wim Wenders, Robert Wilson, Oliver Stone, Jean-Paul Goude, Philippe Decoufle, etc, as well as collaborations with artists such as Hal Willner, Arto Lindsay, Arthur H, Vinicius Cantuaria, Bulgarian Voices, David Byrne, Grace Jones, Gavin Friday, Ron Carter, Michael Brecker and many others. With his ability to blend the most seemingly disparate elements of music, he has achieved much respect throughout the world. Three Times Three ANTONIO SANCHEZ Three trios. Three triptychs. A concept album. “Three Times Three” is the new project by drummer Antonio Sanchez, who summoned a group of brilliant musicians for this recording. Three extremely different musical ideas, developed and entrusted to six sensitive, outstanding companions. The first CD, featuring Brad Mehldau on piano and Matt Brewer on acoustic bass, consists of two original tunes by Sanchez plus a revived standard, that is, Miles Davis' “Nardis”, renamed “Nar-this” here. Mehldau, obviously much in evidence, stands out against Sanchez and Brewer’s flowing rhythms while sailing through Miles Davis' tune as well as “Constellations” and “Big Dream”, both by Sanchez.

The same pattern applies to the other two groups: the second CD reveals another trio - this time with Sanchez supported by John Scofield on guitar and Christian McBride on both acoustic and electric bass – and a new triptych, opening with a gorgeous remake of Wayne Shorter’s “Fall”. The ambience is different, the mood is different: “Three Times Three” shows its second personality, portrayed by Sanchez through two original pieces, “Nooks And Crannies” and “Rooney And Vinsky”. The last change of scenery stars Joe Lovano on tenor sax and John Patitucci on bass. Flowing out to us are “Leviathan” and “Firenze”, two original tunes, whereas the grand finale is entirely given up to the great Thelonious Monk’s “I Mean You”. “Three Times Three” excellently unfolds from an amusing, original idea that makes this record uniform and multiform, smooth and amazing to listen to, all at the same time. It’s the sophisticated toy of a great musician, who has treated himself with an all-star band and released a record making his association with CAM JAZZ increasingly rich and diverse. Rïah Sahïltaahk MAGMA French prog legends MAGMA have signed to Jazz Village. Over the next 18 months the label will release new works as well as undertaking a major vinyl re-issue programme. The first release is a dramatic reworking of the epic track Rïah Sahïltaahk - now available as a mini-album on CD and LP. Rïah Sahïltaahk, the Kobaïan who set out after the others despite their disapproval, who considered himself superior, who thought he could convert the enemies of Kobaïa to the Kobaïan spirit. But he failed, and wound up alone. On the allegorical stopover planet of Malaria he confronts the full fury of the elements, imagining he will emerge triumphant. His ship almost completely submerged, he is finally forced to implore the elements for mercy but to no avail. He disappears, drowned, swept away in a storm of elemental trance. After the clamor… silence.

Ghetto Feel BLACK ROOTS Black Roots are long-established purveyors of the finest in UK roots reggae. For 15 years, from the band's beginnings in 1979 in Bristol up until the early 90s, Black Roots were mainstays of the live circuit, with a superb discography and plentiful coverage on radio, in print and even on television. And then everything goes quiet. The band seems to slide off the ends of the earth and nothing happens until 2004. French reggae label Makasound contacted the band and agreement was reached to re-release the On the Frontline and In Session albums. Further re-issues on Bristol Archive Records garnered significant attention on the band and the Bristol scene from whence they had emerged. Finally in 2012 Black Roots released their first new studio album in over 20 years entitled On The Ground.

Harriott lived most of his musical life in London, and helped to build the British modern & free jazz scene. Even though he had become quite successful by the time the albums included here were recorded, he would die in relative obscurity in 1973 at the age of 44. Pages From an Imaginary Life ANDY BEY After a long absence from recording Andy Bey returned to the studio for his HighNote debut in 2013 and the result, “The World According to Andy Bey” won a prestigious Academie Charles Cros Coups de Coeur Jazz Award and was a Grammy finalist. Insiders and the cognoscenti have always known about Andy Bey. Given his limited output of studio recordings, live performances were the source of Bey's reputation as a singer. Aretha Franklin has recalled the nights when Andy worked the Village in New York: “Soon as I finished my gig I'd run over to hear him. Andy never got the recognition he deserved . . . he’s a jazz original . . . brilliant and precious.” Decades may have intervened between then and now but the vivid performances, such as those contained in Pages From an Imaginary Life haven't dimmed. Perhaps Andy's most precious gift as a vocalist is not his enormous range and breath control or his austere but communicative piano playing but rather it is that he creates an atmosphere. He transports us to a Lotus-Eater Land where we are asked to meet Bey’s renditions on their own terms as they seemingly erase from memory all previous versions.

Spezial Snack EMILE PARISIEN QUARTET Emile Parisien this year received the prestigious French jazz award Victoires du Jazz as "musician of the year" and in 2012 won the “Prix Django Reinhardt”. Such accolades are evidence of a supreme talent, now given an international platform by ACT. The saxophonist has appeared on ACT once before, in the Duo Series alongside Vincent Peirani, but his Quartet is a different beast altogether, honed over the course of three albums into a tightly cohesive unit which enables the musicians to tackle the abstract time signatures and swift changes with consummate ease. Rita Marcotulli carved herself an impressive international career in a very short time. Aongside jazz greats such as Chet Baker, Joe Lovano, Paul Bley, Palle Danielsson, Michel Portal, Enrico Rava, Pat Metheny and Nguyên Lê, the native Roman also collaborates repeatedly with popular stars of the Italian music scene such as the songwriters Pino Daniele and Gianmaria Testa. Live at the Village Vanguard GUILLERMO KLEIN QUINTET Guillermo Klein is a musician who has incorporated the folkloric and popular musical forms of his native Argentina with his unique jazz and classically inspired compositional style. Klein has been leading a variety of ensembles at the Village Vanguard for roughly a decade, most frequently his long running Los Guachos ensemble. For his November 2012 residency, Klein wanted to present a collaboration that he had been working on for an extended period in Buenos Aires with the tremendous singer/songwriter Liliana Herrero. Herrero and Klein were joined by their accomplished Buenos Aires based ensemble, featuring trumpeter/percussionist Richard Nant, bassist Matias Mendez and drummer Sergio Verdinelli, and by pianist and regular Klein collaborator Aaron Goldberg on Fender Rhodes, to perform six nights at the club. This album was assembled from recordings made during that week.

Liliana Herrero is a well known, groundbreaking singer in Argentina. Mellowtonin JOHANNES ENDERS One of Europe's most important tenor saxophone players is back with his new quartet featuring the great Billy Hart on drums. Enders played on Hart's 2009 release Live At Café Dambert (ENJ9193) and Hart reciprocated on Ender's Billy Rubin (ENJ9707, 2012) - both of which received the pre-eminent “JazzEcho” award in Germany. Standards and routines are alien to this music, which follows up the splendidly balladesque ‘Billy Rubin’ with more tempo. Moods are mixed with great variety on a broad palette, but because this is a typical Enders CD, events do not spiral out of control when they become more exciting. Not that there is a lack of spontaneity: on the contrary, everything is concentrated in the instant, in the point of the now. At the core is the group sound, which emerges from the complete presence of the participants. Tony LP TONY BENNETT Although he is now recognized as one of the best jazz vocalists of all time, Tony Bennett (born Anthony Dominick Benedetto in Astoria, Queens, New York City, on August 3, 1926), was just a young and barely known singer when his first album, Cloud 7, was made in 1955. However, two years later, when Tony, his second LP appeared, he had already become a star. In fact, even though his early recordings advertised him as another romantic crooner, and admitting that through his whole career he never stopped making “commercial” albums in the usual string or big band settings, Bennett always had a special touch, and his artistic ambition led him to assume different challenges. His later duet recordings with pianist Bill Evans represent another example of Bennett’s creativity and sensitivity. His defined jazz orientation earned him the distinction of becoming the vocalist in the Count Basie orchestra in the late fifties, and he has since recorded with most of the finest jazz instrumentalists.

USA - Gospel Songs FLORA MOLTON A real classic from the Ocora back catalogue; this album of gospel blues was recorded at the Avignon Festival of 1987 and introduced to a wider public the stunning rough 'n' ready vocals and guitar of the then 79-year old artist. Flora Molton was born in Virginia in 1908, a preacher's daughter. Although she sang and played organ in the church she did not take up guitar until she was 35, already married with two children and living in Washington DC. Flora busked on the streets of the city for many years, eventually playing folk clubs and festivals as a result of the new wave of interest in the blues in the 1960s. Her recorded output was meagre - an album and a couple of singles on her own Living Stone label, sold on the streets, was the sum total before the L+R label recorded her for an album in its Living Country Blues series in 1980 (later reissued on Evidence). The Ocora album goes straight to the heart of gospel, Flora's coarsely sublime vocals and unique slide technique are backed by the guitar of Eleanor Ellis on a selection of 18 mostly traditional tracks.
