How Long Is Now? Iiro RANTALA / Lars DANIELSSON / Peter ERSKINE After the album “My Working Class Hero,” dedicated to John Lennon and “Tears for Esbjörn,” a homage to the influential Swedish pianist, “How Long Is Now?” puts the spotlight fairly and squarely back on to the Finnish pianist, composer and life-force Iiro Rantala. This new trio album with Peter Erskine (drums) and Lars Danielsson (bass) constitutes a many-faceted summing-up of a happy and resoundingly creative phase of Rantala’s life. Rantala’s compositional horizons are mostly what defines “How Long Is Now?”, but he also has a conscious intention to take a jazz trio in a specific direction: “The basic concept,” he says, “is to avoid the basic concept of the jazz piano trio and to make it more groovy, with simple melodies.” Seven of the thirteen compositions here are by Rantala himself, three tracks by the other players in the trio, and three more are by others who, in their different ways, have helped to construct Rantala’s appealing musical personality - Jimi Hendrix, Kenny Barron and Johann Sebastian Bach.

Hang On In There Baby JOHHNY BRISTOL Elemental Music, together with Universal Music Group, present the best selection of Jazz, R&B, Soul and Funk out of print titles from the vaults of classic labels. Mini-LP gatefold replicas, digitally remastered. This release presents Johnny Bristol’s original album Hang On In There Baby. The prolific Bristol made his name at Motown as a writer and producer of tracks like Diana Ross & the Supremes’ “Someday We’ll Be Together,” a song he co-wrote years before. In 1974, he did a successful production assignment for Boz Scaggs and made his solo debut for MGM. In short order, Bristol created an intriguing persona with a patented wry vocal delivery. The title track is a sensual masterpiece that all but summed up his lyrical metier. The infinitely playable and smooth “You and I” is just as good. “I Got Cha Number,” also on Scaggs’ Slow Dancer, has Scaggs coming on to do some fun harmony vocals. This is prime ‘70s L.A. R&B/pop with Bristol’s sure production hand and arrangements by H.B. Barnum. Players include David T. Walker with his singular guitar fills.

California Dreamin' BUD SHANK & CHET BAKER Elemental Music, together with Universal Music Group, present the best selection of Jazz, R&B, Soul and Funk out of print titles from the vaults of classic labels. Mini-LP gatefold replicas, digitally remastered. Celebrated alto saxophonist and flutist BUD SHANK (1926-2009) rose to prominence in the early 1950s playing lead alto and flute in Stan Kenton’s Innovations in Modern Music Orchestra and throughout the decade worked in various small jazz combos. He spent the 1960s as a first-call studio musician in Hollywood. In the 1970s and 1980s he performed regularly with the L.A. Four. Shank ultimately abandoned the flute to focus exclusively on playing jazz on the alto saxophone. He is also well known for the alto flute solo on the song “California Dreamin’” recorded by The Mamas & the Papas in 1965. The album containing that song, which is presented here in its entirety, also features the great CHET BAKER on trumpet.

Chet Baker Quartet Vol.1 CHET BAKER Elemental Music, together with Universal Music Group, present the best selection of Jazz, R&B, Soul and Funk out of print titles from the vaults of classic labels. Mini-LP gatefold replicas, digitally remastered. In 1955 Chet Baker undertook his first European tour, which resulted in various wonderful recordings – among them those included on the present album. However, it would also have serious consequences for Chet. According to Jack Chambers’ book Bouncing with Bartok: “Chet’s three young sidemen boarded the Ile de France in New York Harbour and arrived about a week later. It was the first time any of them had travelled outside North America. Twardzik was 24, Bond was 22, Littman only 20—and Baker, for all his honours, was just 25 and, at that moment in his life, looked younger. This European tour was the first for all four musicians and would be the last for three of them. Only Baker would ever return.”
Label: Elemental Music File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: 88520 Barcode: 8435395501184 Price: MID PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack CHET BAKER - trumpet DICK TWARDZIK - piano JIMMY BOND - bass PETER LITTMAN - drums
The two sessions with Twardzik were entirely devoted to the music of Bob Zieff, a young composer whose works had fascinated Baker. According to Chet: “The originality and freshness of Zieff’s line and chordal structure is going to please a lot of people, I think –at least musicians and other serious listeners.” Twardzik would die a few days after this recording was made from a heroin overdose. The pianist’s death would haunt Baker for the rest of his life, and would have a lot to do with the trumpeter’s own drug dependence. Track listing: 1. RONDETTE (Bob Zieff) 2:13 2. Breakin' Bread FRED & THE NEW J.B.'s Elemental Music, together with Universal Music Group, present the best selection of Jazz, R&B, Soul and Funk out of print titles from the vaults of classic labels. Mini-LP gatefold replicas, digitally remastered.
Label: Elemental Music File Under: Soul/Funk Catalogue No: 88522 Barcode: 8435395501252 Price: MID PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Maceo Parker (alto sax, flute & vocals), St. Clair Pinckney (tenor sax & vocals), Jimmy Parker (alto sax), Russell Crimes (trumpet), Fred Thomas (bass), Jimmy “Chank” Nolen (guitar & vocals), Hearlon “Cheese” Martin (guitar), “Sweet” Charles Sherrell (guitar & clavinete), Johnny Griggs (congas & percussion), John “Jabo” Starks (drums), John Morgan (percussion & vocals).
This Elemental Music reissue presents the last of the Fred Wesley and the JB’s albums. “Breakin’ Bread” and “Makin’ Love” charted R&B. The funk is still much in evidence, although some new twists and turns manifest themselves on the “rapped” title cut. Fred Wesley (born July 4, 1943) is an American jazz and funk trombonist, best known for his work with James Brown in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as Parliament-Funkadelic in the second half of the 1970s. In 2015, Wesley was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. The J.B.’s (sometimes punctuated The JB’s or The J.B.s) was the name of James Brown’s band from 1970 through the early 1980s. On records the band was sometimes billed under alternate names such as The James Brown Soul Train, Maceo and the Macks, A.A.B.B., The First Family, and The Last Word. In addition to backing Brown, the J.B.’s played behind Bobby Byrd, Lyn Collins, and other singers associated with the James Brown Revue, and performed and recorded as a self-contained group. Brown doesn’t perform on Breakin’ Bread, but was the album’s producer. Track listing: 1. BREAKIN’ BREAD (James Brown-Fred Wesley) 5:01 2. I WANNA GET DOWN (James Brown-St. Clair Pinckney-Fred Wesley) 3:47 3. LITTLE BOY BLACK (James Brown-Fred Wesley) 4:32 4. RICE ‘N’ RIBS (James Brown-Fred Wesley) 4:19 5.
