Navega! MOUSSU T E LEI JOVENTS For a decade, Moussu T e lei Jovents has been one of the most prolific, musically interesting and positive phenomena in the Occitan region (southern France), shuttling back and forth between Marseille and the Americas, picking up influences from Brazil, the Caribbean, Marseille music hall and all over. Set up by Tatou and Blù from Massilia Sound System, this 'side project' has become one of the most exciting bands on the French music scene, mixing Provençal urban poetry with Creole and blues rhythms. Navega! continues the adventure with a beefier sound whilst incorporating all the band's joyful quirkiness and of course the signature sound of Blù's banjo and Tatou gravelly growl. The band play at the Musicport Festival, Whitby, 23rd October ADVERTISED IN FROOTS, SONGLINES AND R2

Tandem MICHAEL WOLLNY & VINCENT PEIRANI This duo of superb musicians can simultaneously be highly refined, and yet completely off-the-wall. They are two of the brightest lights of the international firmament of jazz as seen through a European prism. They have also put down a marker with “Tandem”: their stellar collaboration is most definitely going places. Since their first recorded collaboration, with Michael Wollny guesting on Vincent Peirani's Thrill Box album (2013), the careers of both Peirani and Wollny have witnessed meteoric rises, more or less in parallel with each other. They are considered all over Europe as two of the leading jazz musicians of their generation. What makes them stand out in particular is that they are extending the horizons of their instruments, that they strive to create ever-new fantasies in sound, and in doing so they are setting new paths for European jazz. Jazzwise likened Wollny’s career to “a vortex of creativity pointing in a relentlessly upwards trajectory.” The Observer stated that Peirani “breaks new ground for his instrument.

Their stylistic palette ranges widely. There is the mysterious, suspense-laden Björk Classic “Hunter.” They play Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings,” which the film-absorbed Wollny first encountered in the soundtrack of Oliver Stone’s “Platoon.” There is the anthemic "Fourth of July" by Sufjan Stevens. The up-tempo number "Vignette" by Gary Peacock is perhaps the only “classic” jazz tune on the album. Other, original, compositions take the listener off in experimental and expressionist directions. Proximity ANDREW CYRILLE & BILL McHENRY It was during a week-long residency of saxophonist Bill McHenry at the famed Village Vanguard that club regular Max Koslow was struck by a particular partnership, enough so to jump into a business in which he had no experience: recordings. The duo in question was McHenry with the luminary percussion master Andrew Cyrille - the chemistry between the pair was palpable and the music magical. Koslow knew that this magic had to be preserved and approached the two musicians to see if they would allow him to record them together. The resulting Proximity was recorded over two days in November 2014 for Koslow’s newly minted Brain Schism Productions, LLC. The recording features pieces written and improvised by the duo along with tunes written by Cyrille’s peers Don Moye and Muhal Richard Abrams. The approach to the music was relaxed and fluid with both musicians finding inspiration in the other’s voice. The duo setting provides an intimate setting for creation. Andrew Cyrille and Bill McHenry’s Proximity presents a fantastic example of the type of inspired music that can come from musicians of high ability and individuality being paired together.

Released in 1978 by RCA Victor, Iberia masterfully fuses Jazz-Rock with contemporary classical and traditional Spanish music. It can be considered one of the best Spanish albums of that decade.

John Coltrane had first joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955 and would form his own celebrated quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones in 1960. In the intervening years, he overcame his narcotics addiction and began to expand on his own musical ideas while experimenting with both the Thelonious Monk Quartet and the Miles Davis Sextet (featuring Bill Evans and Cannonball Adderley). With the latter band, he would record the famous Kind of Blue, one of the most fascinating jazz albums of all time. Although Trane belonged to both the Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk groups, he also recorded studio sessions with other musicians and presented his own albums during this period. Among them were many quartet sides, all of them featuring Red Garland on piano and Paul Chambers on bass (both of whom he had known from the Miles Davis Quintet). These quartets were, in many ways, the predecessors of the 1960 John Coltrane Quartet, and in having the same instrumentation and format, present Coltrane’s true evolution from the tentative tenor saxophonist who entered the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955 to the complete artist that emerged five years later. When they recorded Every One of Us in May of 1968, the album reissued here by Elemental Music, Eric Burdon & the Animals were nearing the end of their string, at least in the lineup in which they’d come into the world in late 1966. This album came just after the release of their second one, The Twain Shall Meet. The group had seen some success, especially in America, with the singles “When I Was Young,” “San Franciscan Nights” and “Sky Pilot” over the previous 18 months, but had done considerably less well with their albums. Every One of Us lacked a hit single to help drive its sales, but it was still a good psychedelic blues album, filled with excellent musicianship by Burdon (lead vocals), Vic Briggs (guitar, bass), John Weider (guitar, celeste), Danny McCulloch (bass, 12-string, vocals), and Barry Jenkins (drums, percussion), with new member Zoot Money (credited, for contractual reasons, as George Bruno) on keyboards and vocals. Opening with the surprisingly lyrical “White Houses” – a piece of piercing social commentary about America in early 1968 – the record slid past the brief bridge “Uppers and Downers” and into the extended, John Weider-authored psychedelic mood piece “Serenade to a Sweet Lady,” highlighted by Briggs’ superb lead acoustic guitar playing and Weider’s subdued electric accompaniment. This album would be one of the last times that this lineup of the group would appear on record – Briggs and McCulloch would leave later in the year, both to be replaced by Andy Somers (aka Andy Summers), and the group as a whole would pack it in with the waning of 1968. Construçao CHICO BUARQUE LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LPs WITH ORIGINAL ARTWORK 180 gram VINYL – AUDIOPHILE PRESSING This Elemental Music reissue presents Chico Buarque’s fifth album for Philips, Construção, a classic where nearly all the songs became hits. Buarque was featured in an acoustic setting, almost completely aloof from the tropicália movement (the courageous orchestration of Construção is very reminiscent of the influential work by Rogério Duprat). He delved into the Brazilian tradition of sambas and romantic or doleful songs, coming up with “Deus lhe pague” and “Construção,” both having strong lyrics subliminally criticizing the military dictatorship; “Cotidiano,” existentially thematic, revolving around the man-woman relationship routine; “Olha Maria” (written with Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes), a sad separation farewell; “Samba de Orly,” a reference to the French airport and city that became paradigms of the exiled Brazilians; “Valsinha,” a beautiful love story; and other immortal songs in which the genius of the composer meets sensitively and reverently the heart of the Brazilian feel.

Comme d'Habitude CLAUDE FRANÇOIS LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LPs WITH ORIGINAL ARTWORK 180 gram VINYL – AUDIOPHILE PRESSING
Label: Elemental Music File Under: World music/France Catalogue No: 700102 Barcode: 8435395501177 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 LP
Elemental Music proudly presents a reissue of Claude François classic album Comme d’Habitude. Along with Johnny Hallyday, François was one of the biggest stars of French rock & roll, emerging during the so-called “yé-yé” movement of the early ‘60s. Like Hallyday, his early success came mostly from French adaptations of English-language rock and folk hits, rather than from original material written specifically for him. However, his image - immaculately coiffed hair and glitzy sequined suits - played just as big a role in his popularity, and made him a major teen idol in his heyday, when fans dubbed him “Clo-Clo.” He dressed his much-imitated quartet of backup dancers, the Clodettes, in even more flamboyant costumes (some self-designed), which gave his act a definite kitsch appeal and became a visual signature for much of his career. Appropriately for the singer who recorded the original version of the song that became “My Way” (“Comme d’Habitude”) François lived the outsized life of a star, cycling through a series of high-profile affairs and acquiring a reputation for being extremely difficult to work with. Despite continued popularity, he endured a run of bad personal luck in the ‘70s that culminated in his freak accidental death at only 39 years old, electrocuting himself in the bathtub while changing a light bulb. Track listing: Side A 1. COMME D’HABITUDE 2. CE SOIR JE VAIS BOIRE “STASERA MI BUTTO” 3. JE VEUX CHAQUE DIMANCHE UNA FLEUR 4. POURQUOI “BABY NOW THAT I’VE FOUND YOU” 5. Elemental Music proudly presents, for the first time in 45 years, an LP reissue of one of the most underrated albums of the initial Brazilian wave, talented Bossa Nova composer and performer Edu Lobo's seminal Sergio Mendes Presents Edu Lobo. Produced by one of Lobo's most persistent advocates, Sergio Mendes, the album overflows with cunningly devised, first-class tunes like "Ponteio," "To Say Goodbye," the marathon "Crystal Illusions," "Casa Forte," and the irresistible "Jangada." Some have Portuguese lyrics, some are in English, but others simply use sharp scatted syllables, an art at which the low-key but nimble-tongued Lobo excels. The backings strip the base of Sergio Mendes' Brasil '66 sound down to its rhythm section, fortified by the playful and enigmatic electric piano and flute multiphonics of Hermeto Pascoal (who also had a big hand in the arrangements), Airto Moreira's multifaceted percussion talents, and an occasional cello quartet. Collectors of Brazilian jazz should seek this one out; it is absolutely essential. Track listing: SIDE A 1. ZANZIBAR 4:09 2. PONTEIO 3:07 3. EVEN NOW 2:17 4. CRYSTAL ILLUSIONS 6:14 SIDE B 1. Domingo GAL COSTA & CAETANO VELOSO LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LPs WITH ORIGINAL ARTWORK 180 gram VINYL – AUDIOPHILE PRESSING This Elemental Music release presents the debut album of both Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa, two of the leading representatives of the Bossa Nova (new wave) which expanded the horizons of Brazilian music by turning it into a highly personal experience. Released in 1967, the album features seven original compositions (all by Caetano), one partnership with Torquato Neto, and four other songs (two by Gilberto Gil and Torquato Neto, one by Edu Lobo, and one by Sidney Miller). Domingo is a quiet, post-bossa nova effort characterized by fine singing and some very good songs, and was a deceptive calm-before-the-storm since both artists would soon play central roles in the wild, psychedelic experimental scene known as Tropicalia. It would take years of musical and political tumult before each of them regained their footing, which makes this relatively modest and innocent beginning all the more valuable. This is an essential album that is a top 10 of all time best Bossa Nova recordings.

Troubadour J.J. CALE LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LPs WITH ORIGINAL ARTWORK 180 gram VINYL – AUDIOPHILE PRESSING
Label: Elemental Music File Under: Rock/Pop Catalogue No: 700105 Barcode: 8435395501221 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 LP
Elemental Music proudly presents a reissue of an album widely hailed as the best of J.J. Cale’s seventies heyday (if not the best of his career): Troubadour. This sensational masterpiece is a consummation of its author’s brand of hazy hypnosis. Each song deals with sex or seduction, each burning slow on blue flame heat. This was the fourth album released by J.J. Cale, an artist whose genius and influence (just as those of Nick Drake or Big Star’s Alex Chilton) far outweigh his popularity. Released in 1976, Troubadour is notable for introducing the Top-hit “Cocaine,” which Eric Clapton would cover on his Slowhand album a year later with far greater repercussion. J.J. Cale is also remarkable (along with his Oklahoma mate Leon Russell) for being one of the highest exponents of the so-called “Tulsa Sound”, a mix of rockabilly, country, rock ‘n’ roll, and blues of the late 1950s and early 1960s, or as Eric Clapton described it, “…a strange hybrid, not really blues, not really folk or country or rock’n’roll. It’s somewhere in the middle.” Troubadour is a truly timeless recording, one of those ten desert island records to seriously consider owning. Track listing: SIDE A 1. HEY BABY 3:12 2. Rebel JOHN MILES LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LPs WITH ORIGINAL ARTWORK 180 gram VINYL – AUDIOPHILE PRESSING Elemental Music proudly presents the acclaimed first solo album of the supremely talented guitarist, pianist and vocalist John Miles: Rebel. Released in 1976, it was his most successful album to date, and contained the top-hits “Highfly” and “Music”. The latter is one of his most memorable songs. When Miles eventually signed to Decca in the summer of 1975, he was introduced to producer Alan Parsons (Miles would later sing on several albums of the Alan Parsons Project). The first song they recorded was “Highfly”, released as a single in 1975, and reaching #17 in the UK and #68 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Because of the single’s success, plans were made to record a full album and the making of the LP took place in November–December 1975 at Abbey Road Studios. When the song “Music” was released, it became an instant hit reaching #3 in the UK, and paved the way for a U.S. tour supporting Elton John. Rebel is a near-perfect blend of progressive and melodic pop rock sensibilities, that will please both prog-rock/70’s enthusiasts and all-time pop lovers.

Good Feelin' LP T-BONE WALKER LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LPs WITH ORIGINAL ARTWORK 180 gram VINYL – AUDIOPHILE PRESSING This Elemental Music release presents the first LP reissue in almost 50 years of one of legendary bluesman T-Bone Walker’s lesser known albums: …Good Feelin’… Recorded in Paris during November 1968, Good Feelin’ was the album that rekindled public interest in the life and music of Aaron “T-Bone” Walker throughout Europe, and even in some portions of the United States. The album begins and closes with informal narration by Walker accompanying himself on the piano. The band behind him on the other ten tracks includes guitarist Slim Pezin, pianist Michel Sardaby and Cameroonian saxophonist Manu Dibango blowing tenor, alongside Pierre Holassian on alto, Francis Cournet on baritone, and a trumpeter whose identity remains a mystery. With T-Bone’s electric guitar sizzling in its own juice, and the horns signifying together over soulful organ grooves and freshly ground basslines, all of this music is rich and powerful. Each track is delicious, a funky instrumental strut entitled “Poontang” being probably the tastiest of all.
